“Commoners” vs. “Aristocrats:” A Study of the Lives and Achievements of Six Famous American Generals

$42 / $55

AT6920 – Atrium (Ft. Myers) – November 5, 12, 19 at 10am – 11:30am, Thursdays – 4.5 hours Participants may register for the entire series (AT6920) or for any of the individual lectures below. How and why did three “commoners” who came from humble and non-military backgrounds – Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight Eisenhower, and Omar Bradley – reach higher personal and professional goals than three “aristocrats” – Robert E. Lee, Douglas MacArthur, and George S. Patton – who came from privileged and prominent military families? We will study the lives and careers of these iconic wartime generals, all of whom graduated from West Point, and explore their similarities and differences in style, leadership, and character. We will also analyze how these six men continue to influence America today. Finally, is there something embedded within the collective American character that is fond of “commoners” and disdains “aristocrats?” Instructor: Dr. James Rudin

Ulysses S. Grant vs. Robert E. Lee

$20 / $25

AT6921 – Atrium (Ft. Myers) – November 5 at 10am – 11:30am, Thursday – 1.5 hours The once matchless reputation of Confederate general “Bobby Lee,” the son of Revolutionary War hero, “Lighthorse Harry” Lee of Virginia, is currently undergoing a critical reevaluation, while his military opponent, “Sam Grant,” the shop keeper’s son from Illinois who became a U.S. president, is being revisited in a more positive way. What brought about this change? What impact does it mean for contemporary America? Instructor: Dr. James Rudin

Dwight Eisenhower vs. Douglas MacArthur

$20 / $25

AT6922 – Atrium (Ft. Myers) – November 12 at 10am – 11:30am, Thursday – 1.5 hours What were the significant differences between “Ike,” the most prominent American military figure of World War II, and the charismatic, imperious MacArthur who has been called “The American Caesar?” How did a “poor boy” from Kansas surpass the achievements of the general who, at the end of his long career, was fired by President Harry Truman? Instructor: Dr. James Rudin

Omar Bradley vs. George S. Patton

$20 / $25

AT6923 – Atrium (Ft. Myers) – November 19 at 10am – 11:30am, Thursday – 1.5 hours Despite the famous award-winning film bearing his name, George Patton remains the controversial symbol of a brilliant warrior who could not control his emotions or tame his lust for battle. Omar Bradley, however, like Eisenhower, was another “poor boy” from America’s Midwest – Missouri – who achieved greatness. He outranked Patton and won the profound respect and even the love of the men and women who served under him during World War II. Yet no one has made a popular movie about this self-effacing five-star general. Instructor: Dr. James Rudin

American Presidents in Economic Hard Times: Lessons for Today?

$30 / $35

NC7042 – Naples Center – October 26, November 2 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Mondays – 3 hours Participants may register for the entire series (NC7042) or for any of the individual lectures below. From Revolutionary War days, when Washington was struggling to pay his troops, to Obama’s inherited wars and massive deficits, booms and busts have been part of the American economic fabric. Many 19th century Presidents confronted depressions, but believed the business cycle of boom or bust was strictly a business affair. Causes of the depressions and how each affected the sitting President and his people will be explored. What do these economic disruptions have in common with the situation today? Instructor: Steven Mutart

American Presidents: 1776 – 1929

$20 / $25

NC7043 – Naples Center – October 26 at 1:30pm –3pm, Monday – 1.5 hours Congress had no power to tax as the Revolutionary War wore on. So desperate was the situation that George Washington went out of pocket to pay his troops. One hundred fifty years later, after a half dozen or so significant economic booms and busts, Herbert Hoover was faced with a financial collapse of almost Biblical proportions. Some said this was proof of the failure of capitalism and by extension, the American way of life. We will explore the surprisingly similar causes of the panics of the 19th century and how they affected the sitting president and the country; and what, if any, effort was made to prevent them in the future, and if the root causes still exist today. Instructor: Steven Mutart

American Presidents: 1930 – Today

$20 / $25

NC7044 – Naples Center – November 2 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Monday – 1.5 hours Despite President Hoover’s best efforts, in 1933 President Roosevelt inherited an economic collapse that only got worse as continuing bank failures and mounting unemployment sank the nation to new depths. Unprecedented governmental action, WWII, and a revival of the natural business cycle saw prosperity return. The rest of the century saw its share of boom and bust, but nothing close to the depressed times of the 1930’s, that is until the so-called Great Recession of today. What comparisons can be made between these economic events and the reactions of the various Presidents in office at the time? Instructor: Steven Mutart

The Long, Hot Summer of 1787: Designing a Nation on Parchment

$20 / $25

NC7049 – Naples Center – October 29 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday – 1.5 hours The world was about to change on Sunday, May 13, 1787, when George Washington stepped off the ferry in Philadelphia, the day before the Constitutional Convention. For 120 sweltering days, Washington presided over 55 fractious delegates from 12 equally fractious states (Rhode Island did not even send delegates) who argued, fought, cajoled, and ultimately compromised in drafting a blueprint for a new nation and one of the most significant documents in history. The ratification process was to be yet another story. Instructor: Steven Mutart

The New Nation Struggles (1790 – 1800)

$20 / $25

NC7050 – Naples Center – November 5 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday – 1.5 hours Our new country was finally official: the Constitution was ratified by 12 of the 13 previously independent colonies, but more daunting tasks lay ahead. Jefferson and Adams were ready to join Hamilton, Madison, and other leaders in helping put the nation on its feet and prepare to live in a dangerous world. However, the Founding Fathers found it difficult. Friendships turned to enmity; petty jealousies and genuine differences made for a very unhappy team of superstars. Our leaders today could learn much from these powerful, passionate, and brilliant men who saw the world very differently from one another but ultimately compromised for the greater good of the country. Instructor: Steven Mutart

The Miracle Continues (1800 – 1820)

$20 / $25

NC7051 – Naples Center – November 12 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday – 1.5 hours The Republicans, led by Thomas Jefferson, take over at the start of the new century after twelve years of Federalist rule. Alexander Hamilton dies in a duel with Aaron Burr who turns traitor. Lewis and Clark make their legendary exploration after the Louisiana Purchase. New England, fed up with rule by Virginians dominated by agricultural interests, talks secession. Titanic political battles between Jefferson and Marshall take place over the role of the courts verses the executive and legislative branches. The nation’s first financial panic takes place during Monroe’s administration. Join this engaging and informative look back at these and other events during the early history of our nation. Instructor: Steven Mutart

The Nation Turns Thirty (1820 – 1840)

$20 / $25

NC7052 – Naples Center – November 19 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday – 1.5 hours The fact the young nation neither won nor lost the War of 1812 did little to dampen a growing confidence in manufacturing in the North, agricultural expansion in the South, and a restlessness to expand westward – the Indians be damned – as the sense of ascendancy of the common man persisted and led to the election of Andrew Jackson in 1828. The Jacksonian Era marked a new and controversial rule; a war with Mexico was less than a decade away; some saw Jackson as a threat to democracy as he vastly expanded Executive power. Jackson’s successor, Martin Van Buren, inherited one of the nation’s worst financial crises in the Panic of 1837 planting the seeds of secession which would lead to the nation’s bloodiest conflict just two decades later. Instructor: Steven Mutart

Father and Son Spies – Jim and Nat Nicholson Option #1 – AT7053 – Atrium Oct 30 at 10am – 11:30am, Fri

This is a fascinating story of double betrayal. We will examine the treasonous actions and motives of both father and son, including what they did and how they were caught. We will also compare it to another father and son spy duo - John and Michael Walker convicted in 1985. Option #2 – MP7061 – Moorings Park (Naples) November 9 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday – 1.5 hours

Choose one of the course options above. Pearl Harbor completely surprised the Americans in the Pacific. The Germans wondered if the Americans could also be taken by surprise on their East Coast, and so they planned Operation Drumbeat. This was the German strategy to attack freighters and tankers by U-boats, chocking off the fuel supply being sent to America’s allies against Germany. During 1942 German U-Boats sunk 600 merchant ships - 400 off the U.S. eastern and gulf coasts. The U.S. was not prepared to meet the U-Boat threat; over 5,000 Allied seamen were killed. This is the truly fascinating story most Americans do not know - but should. Instructor: Thomas Eastwood (Naples) and Dr. Gerald Franz (Ft. Myers)

Our photographs need to bring the sensations of sight, sound, and smell back to trigger our memories, and to communicate how we felt to others. To do this, we need to think and feel as much as look when setting out to take photographs. Travel photography expresses the feeling of a time and place, portrays a land, its people, or a culture in its natural state, and has no geographical limitations. Learn how to create the images that are only seen in magazines. Instructor: Frank Berna

Picasa also has basic editing capabilities to improve your images, or just have some fun with them. This is a great entry-level course for someone who wants to get the most out of their digital photography experience. Instructor: Frank Berna
