Museum of Fine Arts-Boston and how it Developed its Chinese Art Collection
$34 / $39
NC5521 – Naples Center – January 13 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours One of the finest collections in the world of Song and Yuan Chinese paintings is located at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Connoisseurs of Chinese art from around the world view these treasures. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, a group of lively Bostonians -- including Ernst Fenollosa, Edward Sylvester Morse, William Sturgis Bigelow and even Isabella Stewart Gardner -- first captivated by Japanese culture, were soon recognizing the splendor of Chinese masterpieces. In 1895, Fenollosa helped the museum acquire a set of 13th century Chinese Buddhist paintings that had been in a Japanese temple for centuries. Local collectors and patrons assisted in making some of the finest examples of Buddhist stone sculpture, ancient bronzes, ceramics and paintings available for the Boston viewing public. This talk will introduce both the masterpieces of the Boston collection as well as the fascinating characters involved in assembling these works. Instructor: Dr Nancy Berliner, Boston Museum of Fine Art
Building the Asian Export Art Collections of the Peabody Essex Museum
$34 / $39
NC5522 – Naples Center – January 20 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) was founded as a marine society in 1799. The founders were among the earliest American preservationists, and most had cabinets of curiosities. Because of their foresight, PEM now has significant collections of American, Asian, South Pacific, Native American and African art collected by them since the eighteenth century. PEM has, among its eleven curatorial divisions, the largest and most comprehensive collection of Asian export art in America, covering decorative and fine arts from China, Japan and India produced for the European and American markets between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. This is the only American museum with a department devoted solely to the subject, with over 17,000 pieces in its collections with over 1,000 pieces on display in eleven galleries, including ceramic, furniture, textiles, lacquer, paintings on paper, glass and canvas, wall coverings, ivory, and silver, among other media. Mr. William Sargent, Independent Scholar
Formation of Modern Chinese Museums Around the World
$34 / $39
NC5523 – Naples Center – January 27 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours Chinese museums, from the National Palace Museum in Taipei and the Palace Museum in Beijing to the many modern municipal museums and provincial art academy museums around the country, have a varied history derived from varied origins. Yet almost all Chinese museums differ consistently from their characteristic European-American counterparts and even from the important Western collections of Chinese art. The diversity of origins suggests that things in China might have turned out otherwise, so why instead did they turn out so differently from those in the West, and what after all are these great differences? Instructor: Mr. Jerome Silbergeld, Princeton University

How Richard Fuller became a Great Collector of Chinese Art
$34 / $39
NC5527 – Naples Center – February 17 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours In contrast to the common assumption that collecting Chinese art was easy in the early 20th century, this talk will describe some challenges that faced collectors during that “golden age of collecting.” Using Richard Fuller as a case study, Yiu demonstrates that collecting was (and continues to be) a skill that can be improved. Yiu argues that Fuller’s success should be attributed to his hard work, rather than his resources, which were relatively modest when compared to other wealthy collectors in the early 20th century. Instructor: Mr. Josh Yiu, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
“Halls of Supreme Harmony” Traditional Chinese Furniture and the Built Environment
$34 / $39
NC5528 – Naples Center – February 24 at 10:30am – 12pm, Tuesday – 1.5 hours This illustrated lecture will tell the story of acquiring and restoring two Chinese rooms in 1996 for the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. These include a late Ming reception hall (late 17th century) and a 1797 library self-titled “The Studio of Gratifying Discourse.” Financed by Ruth and Bruce Dayton, these rooms were intended to display the museum’s fine collection of classical Chinese furniture within an original historical context. The basic evolution of Chinese hardwood furniture, its complex mortise-and-tendon joinery, the precious hardwoods imported from Southeast Asia, and the development of decorative motifs will be discussed along with how these objects were used and harmoniously installed within the upper-class homes of China’s elite. Instructor: Mr. Robert Jacobsen, Independent Scholar
Highlights of Chinese Art: The Avery Brundage Collection at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
$34 / $39

Given in 1960 with additions in 1969, works from his collection remain the core of the museum’s holdings. Born in Detroit in 1887, Brundage was a successful Chicago real estate developer best known for his involvement in the Olympics; he served as President of the International Olympic Committee from 1950-1970. Like many of his generation, Brundage was inspired by a visit to the exhibition of Chinese art at the Royal Academy in London in early 1936. Brundage stated of the experience, “We spent a week at the exhibition and I came away so enamored with Chinese art that I’ve been broke ever since.” This lecture will explore Brundage as a collector, with a focus on the remarkable works of Chinese art he was able to acquire. The Gospels of the New Testament and the “Other” Gospels Option #1 – AT5855 – Atrium (Ft. Myers) Oct 27, Nov 3 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Mons – 3 hours
$34 / $39 Option #2 – NC5856 – Naples Center Nov 6, 13 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thurs – 3 hours
Choose one of the course options above. Participants may register for the series (AT5855 or NC5856) or for any individual lectures below. Join us for a scholarly look at the Gospels of the New Testament and those “other” Gospels which were left out of the Bible. Instructor: Dr. Mark Ehman
The Gospels
$20 / $25
Option #1 – AT5857 – Atrium (Ft. Myers) October 27 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Mon – 1.5 hours
Option #2 – NC5858 – Naples Center November 6 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thur – 1.5 hours
Choose one of the course options above. There are four Gospels in the New Testament. How did the Church decide on just four? Are the Gospels the same or are they different? Do the Gospels portray the same “picture” of Jesus? Why, in one of the Gospels, does Jesus want to keep his identity secret? Why does the Fourth Gospel omit any birth story about Jesus? These questions, among others, will serve as the basis for our discussion. Two contemporary scholars write biographical interpretations about Jesus of Nazareth. One claims that he was a political revolutionary; the other asserts that he was deified by his followers. These discussions pose anew the relationship between the teacher of the New Testament and the faith of the modern person.
The Other Gospels
$20 / $25
Option #1 – AT5859 – Atrium (Ft. Myers) November 3 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Mon – 1.5 hours
Option #2 – NC5860 – Naples Center November 13 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thur – 1.5 hours
Choose one of the course options above. Do we know anything about the “lost years” of Jesus’ life? Only in one Gospel of the New Testament do we have an episode describing Jesus as a teenager. Yet, we have “other” Gospels (mostly from the 2nd century CE) relating scenarios about Jesus’ activities in Joseph’s carpenter shop and among the villagers of Nazareth. Recently, a Gospel of Judas has been discovered, debated by many and authenticated by others. This Gospel raises new questions about Jesus’ perception of his ministry and what he anticipated for his followers in the immediate future. Our presentation will focus on these questions and their implications for the 21st century Christian.
Cosmology: Describing the Universe with Contrasting Views of Religion and Science Option #1 – AT5861 – Atrium (Ft. Myers) – 4 hours November 3, 10 at 10am – 12pm, Mondays

Option #2 – NC5862 – Naples Center – 4 hours November 13, 20 at 10am – 12pm, Thursdays
Choose one of the course options above. Religion and science have long been at odds in explaining origins, creation and evolution of the universe, and life. Yet, faith and scientific methodology can also be most complimentary. Are we, intelligent beings, the result of a theistic design, or from the natural laws that are pervasive across fourteen billion years of cosmological evolution? Are we alone or do we have neighbors throughout our universe? This course will introduce you to the dogmas, principles, theories, and beliefs that lie at the heart of these ecumenical questions. Instructor: Mr. Scott Flaig
