NC8190 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 9 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday In an age where the words “legend” and “icon” are often overused, no vocabulary exists to describe George Herman “Babe” Ruth’s enormous and electrifying effect on the public image of baseball. His interests were not limited to baseball, as booze and women were also part of his very open and larger-than-life story: seven World Series championships, “Murderer’s Row,” 714 homeruns, and records that are still unbroken today. Is Willie Howard Mays, Jr. the greatest all-around baseball player ever? Let’s discuss and debate. And guess who was in the on-deck circle when Bobby Thomson’s shot was heard around the world? Baseball fans of the 40s, 50s, and 60s don’t want to miss this one.

Booze, John Huston, the Rat Pack, and Lauren Bacall were all part of his colorful life much like his roles on screen. Dead at 57, his legend lives on in Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, and dozens of other classics. Instructor: Steven Mutart

Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis

$40 / $47

NC7947 – Naples Center (South Naples) – March 17 at 11am – 12:30pm, Friday Norman Lewis (1909–1979) was a pivotal figure in American art, a participant in the Harlem art community, an innovative contributor to abstract expressionism, and a politically-conscious activist. He was also an African American artist whose work engages deeply with modernist trends at a time when that aesthetic choice presented particular tensions in his professional career. This lecture will focus on Norman Lewis’s life, body of work, and the heart of his artistic practice from the early 1930s through the late 1970s. The “procession” in the exhibition’s title evokes Lewis’s evolving painterly process and highlights a prominent thread that runs through his oeuvre: the procession ritual. Processions were both celebratory and terrifying for Lewis, equally carrying allusions to Carnivale and Ku Klux Klan Register online at http://RegisterRA.fgcu.edu or call 239-425-3272 / 239-434-4737

marches. Instructor: Monica Zimmerman, Director of Museum Education, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

After the Camera: Remaking Reality & the Make-Believe in Our Post-Internet Age $40 / $47 NC7948 – Naples Center (South Naples) – April 7 at 11am – 12:30pm, Friday Over the past two decades the photographic image has seen a tremendous transformation due in no small part to the use of computers by artists in the service of their art. Today’s computer software enables the manipulation and even fabrication of realistic images. This raises the age-old question: What is photographic veracity? While posing an equally important, but more contemporary one: What is photography? In this digital age how do we comprehend the shift of the photograph from a realistic image packed with authenticity to a hyper-realistic image that is short on truth? Instructor: Charles Stainback, Director, Philip & Muriel Berman Museum of Art, Ursinus College.

$45 / $60

AT8346 – Atrium Executive Center (South Ft. Myers) – October 25 at 10am – 12pm and 1pm – 3:30pm, Tuesday Lunch is included with this full day seminar. One of the greatest archeological discoveries, and subsequent mysteries, emerged on November 22, 1922, when archaeologist Howard Carter identified the sealed tomb of the New Kingdom Pharaoh, Tutankhamun. Over the next few years, 3,500 objects hastily buried with the boy-king were excavated, along with his intact sarcophagus and mummy. Of 62 tombs discovered in “The Canyon,” as Carter called the King’s Valley, this was the only royal tomb discovered fully intact, with all of its funerary goods still serving their pharaoh. These artifacts alone would have made this finding by the Egyptologist unique and career-making for Carter. However, further analysis seemed to reveal a dark side, a mysterious glimpse into ancient palace intrigue and possible assassination for possession of power and a throne. Today we know better, and forensic evidence offers new clues. Join us to find out. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler

Operation Drumbeat

$20 / $25

AT8349 – Atrium Executive Center (South Ft. Myers) – November 1 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Tuesday Pearl Harbor completely surprised the Americans in the Pacific. The Germans wondered if the Americans could also be taken by surprise on their East Coast, and so they planned Operation Drumbeat. This was the German strategy to attack freighters and tankers by U-boats, choking off the fuel supply being sent to America’s allies against Germany. During 1942 German U-Boats sunk 600 merchant ships - 400 off the U.S. eastern and Gulf coast. The U.S. was not prepared to meet the U-Boat threat; over 5,000 Allied seamen were killed. This is the truly fascinating story most Americans do not know - but should. Instructor: Thomas Eastwood

American Presidents in Hard Economic Times: Lessons for Today?

$30 / $35

NC8351 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 1, 4 at 10am – 11:30am, Tuesday/Friday Participants may register for the entire series (NC8351) or for any of the individual lectures below. From Revolutionary War days, when Washington was struggling to pay his troops, to Obama’s inherited wars and massive deficits, booms and busts have been part of the American economic fabric. Many 19th century presidents confronted depressions, but believed the business cycle of boom or bust was strictly a business affair. Causes of the depressions and how each affected the sitting president and his people will be explored. What do these economic disruptions have in common with the situation today? Instructor: Steven Mutart

American Presidents in Hard Times: 1776 – 1929

$20 / $25

NC8352 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 1 at 10am –11:30am, Tuesday Congress had no power to tax as the Revolutionary War wore on. So desperate was the situation that George Washington went out of pocket to pay his troops. One hundred and fifty years later, after a half dozen or so significant economic booms and busts, Herbert Hoover was faced with a financial collapse of almost biblical proportions. Some said this was proof of the failure of capitalism and, by extension, the American way of life. We will explore the surprisingly similar causes of the panics of the 19th century and how they affected the sitting president and the country; and what, if any, effort was made to prevent them in the future, and if the root causes still exist today.

American Presidents in Hard Times: 1930 – Today

$20 / $25

NC8353 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 4 at 10am –11:30am, Friday Despite President Hoover’s best efforts, in 1933 President Roosevelt inherited an economic collapse that only got worse as continuing bank failures and mounting unemployment sank the nation to new depths. Unprecedented governmental action, WWII, and a revival of the natural business cycle saw prosperity return. The rest of the century saw its share of boom and bust, but nothing close to the depressed times of the 1930’s, that is until the so-called Great Recession of 2008. What comparisons can be made between these economic events and the reactions of the various presidents in office at the time?

The Arab-Israeli Conflict: From Oslo to Obama (5hr Seminar; Lunch Included)

$45 / $60

AT8354 – Atrium Executive Center (South Ft. Myers) – November 1 at 10am – 12pm and 1pm – 3:30pm, Tuesday Lunch is included with this full day seminar. The State of Israel became a reality in 1948. Finally, after 2500 years of spiritual Zionism and about 55 years after the advent of political Zionism, a state was re-born in the ancient homeland of the Jewish people. Yet this homeland was to be re-established on “Twice-Promised Land.” Palestinian and Arab nationalisms were also promised self-determination by the British during World War I. We trace the roots of this age-old conflict, explore nationalist movements in the region, and analyze Israel’s struggle to survive amidst seemingly overwhelming odds. With the bold and daring steps taken by Sadat and Begin, the road to peace would begin, culminating in the Oslo Accords and Peace with Jordan in the mid 1990’s. With a new millennium what options face Israel and her Arab neighbors today? The winds of change would blow across North Africa and the Mid-East in the winter of 2010-2011. Brutal regimes would fall during the Arab Spring and monarchies would radically rethink themselves, as the Arab world would undergo a dramatic series of events that hopefully will lead to a more equitable lifestyle for all. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler

The rise of Greece in the Mediterranean gave Egypt a last chance for survival. Alexander the Great entrusted part of his large Empire, Egypt, to the Greek general Ptolemy, where he blended the best of the Egyptian and the Greek worlds in the end of the 4th Century. His empire, which lasted for 350 years, would rival that of the Syrian Greeks. Learn about the era of Ptolemaic rule and its significant achievements including the founding of a museum and library in the great city of Alexandria, important scientific and mathematical advances. The most famous of the Ptolemies was Cleopatra, whose death marked the end of the Ptolemic reign and the incorporation of Egypt into the Roman empire. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler

The Eastern Front in World War II played the decisive role in the outcome of the war – it accounted for 80% of the German casualties. Initially overwhelmed by the Nazi Blitzkrieg, Russia heroically rallied to defeat the Germans at Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk, Warsaw and finally Berlin. Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky played a prominent role in all these battles. Repressed during the Stalin purges of 1937, he was one of the few who, under brutal torture, never “confessed” nor denounced others. Released from prison because of the looming Nazi threat, his brilliant performance had led to his being considered by military historians as Russia’s finest field general, and the Belorussian Campaign, which he commanded, to be the greatest in history. Like naming the greatest baseball player or actor, selecting the best or worst President is a very subjective business, but over many decades and dozens of surveys, a consensus of the top and bottom five can reasonably be made. Selecting the criteria to make the choice is almost as subjective as the final selections themselves. We won’t let the cat out of the bag, so come to our meeting and talk to learn and weigh in on this fun session. This is far less controversial than the new leader we are choosing this fall! Instructor: Steven Mutart

$20 / $25

NC8364 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 7 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Monday Pollard, a U.S. intelligence analyst, was arrested while spying for Israel. Israel refused him asylum and then denied knowledge of his spying. For years, they have sought his release. Despite a life sentence, he was eligible for parole in November 2015 and was ultimately released. We will address the facts behind this highly debated and political case. Was he motivated by love for Israel and its security, or was his aim more sinister – greed? Also, did he spy only for Israel? Additionally, we will discuss other Mossad operations (Eichmann, the Hangman of Riga, other assassinations) and Israeli intelligence organizations. $20 / $25

NC8426 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 3 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday What does a five-year old do with the rest of his life after mastering violin and piano? Mozart would go on to compose 41 symphonies, 27 piano concertos, five violin concertos (by age 18), many operas, countless small concert pieces, and hundreds of live performances for royalty throughout Europe. But the musical darling of Europe would die penniless and join the paupers in their graves at the young age of 35. $20 / $25

NC8428 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 17 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Thursday Jean Sibelius would never have a life in jurisprudence thanks to his passion for music. His seven symphonies, towering tone poems, violin concerto, many songs, and concert pieces were inspired by nature, Nordic myths, and legends. However, for the last 30 years of his life, his creativity and productivity would come to an end. Do we know what silenced this genius?
