Were you a part of the veritable photograph frenzy at Gossip Bar at Hilton Anatole on October 3, 2013? Why so many photographs, you ask? FGI Dallas, with the help of cohosts Bri Crum, Chuck Steelman, Katy Messersmith-Mattox, and Maxine Trowbridge, introduced their philanthropic Fashion Police and announced for the first time the Rising Stars at this Fashion and Lifestyle Awards - Night of Stars Announcement Party. The Rising Stars are some of DFW’s best in fashion design, accessories design, photography, interior design, and the beauty industry, and DFW’s stylish set showed up in droves to be the first to hear who they are. The trend that night was fashionable black and white with pops of color, one of the hottest fall trends, no less. If this is an indicator of how the Night of Stars Gala will be, it is sure to be an exciting and fashionable night!

Maserati and FGI Dallas There was a bounty of luxury at Park Place Maserati in Dallas during the evening of November 7, 2013. The dealership carved out that spot in time as one to remember fondly by the Maserati Ghibli reveal; excellent Italian eats by Wolfgang Puck Catering; a fashion show by Neiman Marcus NorthPark Center; and proud support for FGI Dallas’ Fashion and Lifestyle Awards – Night of Stars 2013. It was quite a sight!

Beauty Trends Behind the Counter For many of us, the industry we have chosen to work in is not beauty. That certainly does not allude to a dislike of cosmetics. It just means it is not necessarily our forte. On the night of September 17, 2013, FGI Dallas “stepped behind” the beauty counters, per se, at Neiman Marcus Downtown’s The Beauty Event. Neiman’s beauty aficionados spilled the secrets on the best brands and products you should know about to effortlessly achieve the hottest current looks. If you were not there, make sure to find someone who was. 13 You deserve to be enlightened!

Her cosmetic and apparel sales exceed $150 million, and she has won numerous large awards. Who is she? Stacey Schieffelin, President and Founder of ybf (your best friend) and speaker at FGI Dallas’ Beauty Lift-Off luncheon at Champagne’s Luxe in Dallas September 11, 2013. Her trademark personable demeanor and experience in the beauty industry were effervescent gems shared with all. She also shared intriguing statistics about women in business, while encouraging the guests to empower each other as a supportive team.

Blooming Beauty Lunch With Stacey

Stacey showed that she is a natural at building community and creating a fun, easy-going environment that alludes to confidence building. Drawing on that talent, she encouraged each other to share their occupations and aspirations. As we all know, finding commonalities in each other helps one another to grow closer to each other, and it worked beautifully that day. That lunch could be summed up by delicious eats, great company, and priceless information from one of Ladies’ Home Journal’s “America’s Power Women”. Each guest even received an award winning ybf eyebrow pencil. Fabulous, right?

In the case of a client with ideas that never stop growing, which any designer knows can make completing a project complicated, Shay pointed out her trick: remind him or her of the budget. Carefully learning where the balance is in your tried and true design aesthetic and bringing a client’s vision to fruition is a delicate but so important act. Just as those in interiors, or even fashion, learn to be tactful with their clients, the clients themselves are starting to be more courteous to the environment. Although it was noted that DFW’s sustainable resources are not in abundance, one can sense a change in the waves; hence the decision by the sustainable Brazilian company Ornare to open their second USA location in Dallas. Bernadette added that a simple way everyone can be sustainable is to purchase furniture built to withstand time. Follow the trends with your accessories, like pillows and lighting fixtures. Change out a few words, and it sounds quite a bit like fashion, right? Fashion and interiors are kindred spirits.

Inspiring Genuine Art

When there is a fork in the road, do what you love! That was the name of the game at FGI Dallas’ VIP reception with locally based and internationally acclaimed artist Shannon Kincaid. On the evening of July 17, 2013, the restaurant Royal Sixty, located in Dallas, found its walls adorned with Kincaid’s fine art and tables surrounded by networking FGI Dallas guests. Their taste buds were nourished with Wendy Krispin’s delicacies. A crowd favorite, the fried tomatoes, were as delicious as candy. Kincaid, with her unbridled passion and genuine demeanor, gave entrancing details about her family. It turns out “Love With a Twist” is a movie that ABC television made about it. On another note, to raise awareness for ovarian cancer, she made a painting and tried for years to donate it to Oprah. She succeeded in meeting Oprah at the Texas State Fair, and the painting now hangs on a wall at the Oprah Winfrey Academy for Girls in Johannesburg, South Africa. We found out that her paintings even line the walls of Baylor T. Boone Pickens Cancer Hospital’s Women’s Health Unit! There they get to inspire the patients to have hope, which Kincaid adores. The artist noted that she makes many original pieces and commissions. She’s even created them for celebrities, like Mary Kay Ash and Tom Landry. Her pivotal decision to change her college major to studio art was a huge risk, but it had triumphant rewards because she worked hard at it. She was determined to do what she loves, like so many FGI members do!

Luxury: Always there; always something to aspire to. It exists in various shapes and sizes, from a diamond ring or gown of one’s dreams, to a supportive team. Each of us makes the call as to what it is, and it changes depending on where we are in life. In the casual, eclectic ambiance of NYLO Dallas South Side on the evening of June 19, 2013, FGI Dallas cultivated their entrancing Luxe Desire event. A panel discussion with some of DFW’s best in the luxury industry, Carinthia Kishaba (Owner of Couture Rocks, LLC) and Luis Nazario and Andre Yabin (Owners and Designers of Binzario Couture), gave their insiders only insight into their industries, and how each successfully navigate it. Guests were heard noting that Terri Provencal, Editor-In-Chief of Patron magazine, was an ideal moderator, what with her finger always on the pulse of the luxury market. This event made one’s heart stop because of the way the panelist’s creative works, fine jewelry and high-fashion gowns, were narrated together in person. The delicate looking gowns were shown on glamorous models, and the glistening jewelry was displayed in jaw-dropping fashion. Who did not love those ruby drop earrings? Knowing outstanding pieces are typically preceded by much effort, it was particularly touching that the panelists felt comfortable sharing their personal experiences with marketing and reaching their target market. For Binzario, a secret to success has been to put great heart into taking care of each client. Also key has been their decision to not spread themself into markets in price points unnatural to them, something oft seen in the luxury industry. Of particular note, the importance of having a good team to surround you was doted on, from family; to employees; to friends. Looking around the room, that thought put into perspective why so many people probably filled that room that night, from students to professionals. (Thank you Rosanne Hart and Dr. Marilyn Stewart for contributing your thoughts.)

Ripped from the RUNWAY FALL 2013 Trends

25

Trends govern the design industry quite a bit, and FGI Dallas brings ready-to-wear fashion trends straight to its members. The evening of May 14, 2013 at Galleria Dallas’ The Second Floor Privé was quite the feast for one’s eyes. At this Fall 2013 ready-towear trend presentation guests were treated to an FGI exclusive - a video of the most important trends that appeared through the mist of over 750 fashion shows in New York, Paris, London, and Milan. Jennifer de Socarraz-Fleming hosted the night, while none other than Marylou Luther, CFDA award winner and Creative Director of FGI, narrated the interesting documentary.

DIGITAL branding with Dallas’ Finest Dallas’ leading social media experts include: Maxine Trowbridge, Editor-in-Chief of PaperCity Dallas; Kate Johnson, Director of Social Media and Lead Publicist at Power PR; and Sabrina Dee, Chief Strategy Officer at Black Book Ink. Of course FGI Dallas selected them to be panelists at their Digital Branding event! Guests came together in Dallas on March 27, 2013, at the restaurant Bridge Bistro to listen to those aforementioned individuals gift their knowledge relating to favorite social media platforms, strategies to excel, and more. Like all FGI Dallas programs, the event completed with the guests taking the opportunity to network the evening away.

Every year this happens. May 2-4, 2013 FGI’s many regional directors traveled from all over to New York City for the annual FGI Regional Directors’ Conference. There they worked together to come up with ways to make their respective FGI chapters better and met with people of note in the fashion and lifestyle industries. FGI Dallas Regional Director, Jenny Siede, doted on the private tour and Stephen Burrows dress meeting with iconic fashion designer Stephen Burrows at the Museum of the City of New York. All About You Not to be forgotten, The Conference the keynote speaker. It was none other than Tracy Reese! At the Esteé Lauder Headquarters, there was a cocktail reception with Thia Breen, President of North America Estée Lauder. Did you know FGI is connected to so many notables? Tracy Reese
