ased in the Cotswolds, agricultural contractor David Hunt faces a constant battle with stones. While it is tough on his arable kit, it wreaks havoc with forage equipment – even more so when a rake has been through the crop. Mr Hunt, based at Middle Brookend Farm, Moreton-in-theMarsh, says: “Rakes are pretty aggressive. Unless your fields are super smooth and flat, there is always going to be some unwanted ground contact. And we have found rakes can also damage some grass varieties – they are just not gentle enough.” Though until recently, the challenges of the stony Cotswold region are something that D. Hunt Agricultural Contractors has had to accept when it comes to grass and forage equipment. “Unfortunately, the risk of forage contamination is something we, and our customers, have had to tolerate for years. And to add insult to injury, forager blades, shear bars, chute liners and trailers all take a good hiding from stones and flints.” But light is now at the end of the
tunnel, with recent developments in swath merging equipment. After buying a three-metre front-mounted merger four years ago, the firm invested in a Kuhn Merge Maxx 950 for the 2019 season. “I bought the small unit as an experiment and it was brilliant. We saw a big reduction in forage contamination, but what we really needed was a much bigger merger,” says Mr Hunt.
Swath “It also proved pretty useful during harvest. We bale straw for a merchant using our 2270 and 2270XD six-string MF balers, and we could be sent anywhere, working in all kinds of swaths. Now we can merge straw into much bigger rows for these hungry balers and we have the option of easily moving straw after a shower of rain.” Supplied by local dealer Turney FieldForce, the merger was bought to take the lion’s share of rowing up from the company’s Kuhn GA9531 twin rotor rake. “I ordered the merger in 2018 as soon as I saw it. I thought it was just what we needed to improve forage

It offers working widths of 7.5m and 9.5m. In its 7.5m setting, the two belts are butted together and afford left- or right-side swath positioning. It can be useful to double up by placing two 7.5m rows side by side on adjacent passes, putting 15m, plus the width of the swath, into one row.
Position Moving to the wider 9.5m setting creates a 1.5m opening between the two belts. In this mode, belts can be operated to merge the swath into a central position. Further flexibility comes from running the belts in the same direction or in opposite directions, enabling a swath to be placed on either side of the machine, or delivering one side swath and one central swath. Carried on the tractor’s lower link arms, and fitted with its own self-contained hydraulic system, this model is equipped with manual

flow control of the two hydraulically driven pickups. With several thousand acres now under its belt and having been put to
work in grass, hay and straw, its operational flexibility is said to be vast. In grass silage, its operation is considered faultless, making the most of David Hunt’s 600hp New Holland FR9060 self-propelled forager.
Output “Swath presentation is everything and the merger is giving us a far better swath. A lumpy swath affects forager output and chop length. If we can create a consistently dense, wide, and evenly filled swath to load the forager’s 3m pickup, we can make the most of output,” he says.
“It worked really well in late season grass and let us pull four rows into one with ease. It just does not knock the stuffing out of grass like a rake can. And the less you have to handle the grass, the better the end result.” Used on a New Holland T7.245, the smallest tractor in the fleet, Mr Hunt says the Merge Maxx has so far proved a useful, if not a faultless, investment. An in-field trial against his own GA9531 9m rake showed just how swath construction can boost forager output. from the 600hp FR9060 varied considerably. Chopping a 9m raked row, the firm saw a 5.5kph forward speed and 65 per cent engine power utilisation. In the same size merged row, forward speed was easily increased to 10kph and engine power utilisation reached 90 per cent. Merger operator Chris Townsend is pleased with the unit, but the differing crop volumes and moisture content has thrown up some headaches during the season. He says: “It performs better in some crops than others. In loose, dry hay, mostly meadow-grass, we have experienced crop dragging on the end of the pickup which is still running through the tedded crop. “If material was perhaps wetter and heavier, it would be more likely to separate and less likely to drag.” This tangling of tedded meadowgrass is still to be addressed by the French maker, which is seeking a way

of dividing the crop to stop it being dragged by the end of the merger. “That said, with everything else, we have been getting some great, lump-free rows in grass. And our trailer drivers have noticed the lack of stones hitting the trailers from the forager chute,” he says. “There are a lot of variables with a merger, which makes it more of
an operator’s machine compared to a rake, where you could get away with just putting anyone on it and running at a steady forward speed.” And Mr Hunt agrees. He says: “It is one of those units where an operator needs to spend time in the cab to learn and understand how to get the best from it. It also needs consideration for what is

following, to decide just how much grass is merged into one swath. “The merger has left stones on the ground and we have extended blade life with the forager this season too.”
Capacity However, the switch to high capacity merging has also come at a price. “I could have easily bought a pair of twin-rotor rakes for the cost of the Merge Maxx,” says Mr Hunt. “So there has to be benefits from making this level of investment that not only suits us, but also our customers.”

Pumping unit helps keep people out the danger zone
T
he task of pumping slurry from a wide variety of towers and lagoons is one that has continued to challenge Totnes, Devon-based Millman Contractors. But a breakthrough development in pumping systems by Wox
Agri Services has created a safer and more efficient solution that has improved productivity for the family-run general contracting business. “We apply about 120-130,000 cubes each year, on a wide variety of farms around south Devon,” ex-

plains Paul Millman, who spends the winter months at the helm of a Fendt 724 carrying a 12m dribble bar and double hose reels. “In between maize harvesting and maize planting, I apply slurry using the dribble bar,” he says. “That time in the cab gives you a lot of opportunity to think about how you can improve what you are doing. It is fair to say that the changes we have recently made have doubled our output.” Most slurry pumping is for dairy customers, but with fewer and fewer herds in the area, the business is now travelling further afield. And this is an aspect that makes it all the more important to be self-sufficient and with enough kit to meet almost any on-farm slurry pumping requirement. “What we have found is that lagoons and below-ground stores present a much greater challenge than above-ground stores,” he says. “The prospect of standing on the
bank of a lagoon, attempting to man-handle at least 12m of suction hose into a pit, is not the safest way of working. “It is a job that nobody wants to do, but it is an integral part of the process for pumping slurry.”
High-capacity The answer he was looking for came in the guise of Wox Agri Services’ latest tractor-mounted pumping station, the Walrus. Launched at this year’s LAMMA Show, this high-capacity, pto-driven set has several innovative features to meet the needs of draghose contractors. “Geoffrey Wox came to visit us last autumn with drawings of his latest pumping unit and I really liked the idea of the 9m, hydraulic folding feeder arm,” says Mr Millman. “I could see how this was going to change the way we operate. “We can also attach a further 5m of suction hose on the end of the

feeder arm and from the comfort of the tractor cab, just use the hydraulics to position the feeder arm and hose into any lagoon or pit,” he says. “It is such a safe and stable process and, importantly, is one that avoids the need to manually wrestle hoses into a slurry lagoon. “Towers are less of a problem and the feeder arm just unfolds over the top of the tank and away we go.” The Walrus also includes a hydraulically-driven primer pump to lift material up to the charge pump, before liquid is forced into the main pump. It is a layout said by Wox Agri Services to prevent any issues with priming, cavitation or run-dry scenarios.

tractor hydraulics. A built-in pressure washer simplifies cleaning when the time comes to pack up and move to the next job. “The jetter is a particularly useful addition to the Walrus pump,” says Mr Millman. “We visit a lot of pits that are equipped with a liner

and you cannot drop a traditional stirrer into the slurry. The Walrus pumps and circulates slurry back through a hydraulically controlled jetter nozzle, which lets us stir into corners and easily liquify a lot of slurry, very easily. The whole system is fuss-free.” Millman Contractors first moved over to Wox equipment about five years ago, when looking for a front-mounted hose reel. “We were looking for more output without having to run two teams,” he says. “And over the last few years Geoffrey Wox has helped us to progress from four-inch pipe, to five-inch and we are now running mostly six-inch hose, along with some seven-and-a-quarterinch hose. “Going bigger has reduced our operating costs,” he says. “We have increased flow, lowered pressures
and boosted output. But it has also meant a new way of charging for our services – it is no longer viable to cost the job on an hourly rate, so the introduction of Krohne flow meters on kit means we now charge based on the volumes we pump. “The lower pressure means less stress, lower fuel burnt and extended hose life – we are just not wearing out kit like we used to.”
Couplings Mr Millman also has praise for the Shug lay-flat hose couplings, also supplied by Wox Agri Services. “We have simplified set-up and dismantling by using better couplings,” he says. “They are universal rather than male-female and they do clamp extremely well. We have never had one fail and are well-worth the extra money. Though we have replaced the

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR lynch-pins that secure each clamp ring, with a nut and bolt.” The Walrus is currently handled by a New Holland T7.270, which is much more suited to transporting the 3.6-tonne Walrus, than the Millmans’ Fendt 720 and lower powered T7 tractors.
Air A Schouten Tornado front-mounted pto-driven compressor now provides more than enough air to clean the large-bore pipes, on the longest runs. Typically, Mr Millman goes out to farms carrying two reels, each with 1,000m of hose. The 12m dribble bar handles the bulk of the workload, while a home-built dual outlet splash plate and a grassland injector are also on-hand. “We can push slurry over 2,000 metres with the Walrus,” he adds. “We do operate on a lot of rolling land and our previous Doda system would need a second pump putting in the line to reach 2,000 metres,” he adds. “But the additional investment in kit has enabled us to operate a second slurry team when the pressure is on to start lowering lagoon levels.” Depending on the terrain and field size – the latter range from 0.8-16 hectares (two to 40 acres) in size – daily output is around 1,500 cubes.
“We do lose a lot of time crossing roads and changing fields and 200250 cubes/hour is a good average with the dribble bar system,” says Mr Millman. So far, Millman Contractors has applied about 40,000cu.m with the Walrus unit and it has recently gone back to Wox for some updates. “I am very pleased with the performance and also the backup we get,” says Mr Millman. “A change of impellor is now on the cards to improve its ability to deal with more fibrous slurries and while I appreciate it is not cheap kit by any stretch, it is proving to be good quality and importantly it works.”

or Chris Harris, of Harris Haylage, the ability to mow and condition grass with a fair degree of speed and efficiency has become an essential part of his process. He says: “To make high quality forage we really need to be on top of our game. And that means having the capacity to get the job done quickly so we can make the most of weather and the opportunities it creates for a premium haylage product.” Based at Bridgers Farm, Hurstpierpoint, his system is one that until last year, was based on a pair of front/ rear mower conditioner combinations. “I had been using two mowing outfits,” he explains. “But when my local dealer Ernest Doe took on the SIP range, I looked at the opportunities for increasing output.”

With one 340S used with an existing John Deere front-mounted unit, the other combination pushed the working width out that bit further to 6.5m. “I liked the way the SIP mowers cut grass,” he says. “Power requirement was comfortable and output was good. But the wider 3.4m front-mounted SIP

became tricky to handle on busy roads and in narrow lanes, so I had to have a rethink.” Looking for a more manageable front-mounted unit, Mr Harris swapped his one-year-old frontrear combination and upgraded to a SIP butterfly unit for the 2019 season. This outfit comprised a Silvercut 900C FC rear-mounted
butterfly unit along with a narrower front-mounted 300F FC. Comprising two, eight-disc cutting beds and a finger-tine nylon conditioner, the butterfly unit was to be paired with a front-mounted, seven-disc Silvercut 300F FC. “Having the 3m front mower is a much safer solution that is easier to transport and now I have a 9m outfit,” he says. “That is an extra 2.5m of cutting width and more capacity over my previous SIP front/rear combination.”
Bales Mowing about 800 hectares (2,000 acres) each season, Harris Haylage makes several thousand bales each season, comprising a mix of large square bales produced by a Case-IH LB334, while round bales are produced using a Kuhn VBP 2160 combination baler-wrapper. Swaths are gathered using a 7.8m twin-rotor rake, allowing both balers
to make the most of crop volumes. A McHale 998 takes care of bale wrapping, while a pair of telehandlers speed up field clearance and bale stacking back at Bridgers Farm. The firm has been supplying high-quality haylage to customers throughout West Sussex since 1995. In that time, Mr Harris believes his reputation for providing a high quality service has kept loyal customers using his services year-on-year. “We run a well-oiled machine, with one eye on the weather and the other on grass varieties and crop volumes,” he adds. “Though we tend to work in 20-acre blocks as an element of risk management against changing weather patterns that could impact on our forage quality.” Grass is dropped in swaths, rather than spread immediately off the back of each mower. This affords greater control over the wilting process. “We match the rear swaths to that of the front mower’s swath, which sits

between the tractor front wheels,” he says. “It is no good spreading the grass solely off the back two – it would dry out quicker than the swath cut by the front mower. “I did think about opting for plain disc mowers, but the conditioner aspect works well for us,” he says. “It does speed the job up and it just means we have to keep a close eye on wilting and drying. And the nylon conditioner tines are not quite as aggressive as a steel tine, which makes them a good compromise for our system.” Mr Harris has two tedders at his disposal to encourage fast and effective drying. Stubble heights are easy to manage and cutting quality is impressive thanks to the S-Flow suspension and its contour following.” Last year, power for the butterfly mower came from a John Deere 6930, though a Massey Ferguson 7726 will join the fleet for 2020 to take

can be done before the blades need to be turned. “Three units now do less work overall than what two mowers did previously, so blade life has been increased for us,” he adds. “Though there are more to swap and change when you need to restore the cutting edge. Luckily, the quick-change blade system makes it easy enough to do.”

ith a 400-cow dairy herd at Fields Farm, Market Drayton, Shropshire, slurry spreading is an important task for Charlie Furnival. As such, he has recently invested in application technology to make the most of muck as a source of nutrients for the 355-hectare holding. Mr Furnival says: “We pump
from two clay lagoons and have previously spread the slurry via a tanker with splash-plate. “As a grass-fed system, we make rotational applications as soon as the cows come off each field, also spreading on the silage ground. “However, I was keen to find a system to cut losses to the atmosphere and utilise the slurry better, so undertook some research.” Mr Furnival’s experience of low

According to the manufacturer, trailing shoe applicators are said to reduce nitrogen losses by up to 80 per cent, compared to a splash plate. “I opted for Slurry Kat as the range looked to offer a good quality implement without the costs of the premium ranges,” says Mr Furnival. Equipment of choice is the firm’s Farm Line 7.5-metre trailing shoe applicator, fitted to a 16,000-litre vacuum tanker with self-fill system. The applicator is bolted onto the frame for easy removal if required, although Mr Furnival says the tanker is also equipped with a splash plate which can be used with the trailing shoe applicator in place and folded.
Application A single beam frame carries the steering shoe elements which are fixed at 250mm spacings. Each element can swivel by up to 15 degrees in either direction, maintaining constant application of the slurry while turning around curves. Delivery hoses are urea and UV resistant and the frame folds vertically in an angular shape to maintain rearward visibility when being transported. The shoes also flip up to increase ground clearance when lifted and avoid dripping. Slurry is pumped to the applicator via a single macerator distribu-

Mr Furnival has specified operation via a simple in-cab switch box which gives three options from one spool; steering the tanker axle, raising or lowering the dribble boom and opening or closing the slurry valve. The other spools are used for operating the macerator and swivelling and lowering the filling arm. An eight-inch auto-fill pipe with turbo filler was also specified, and Mr Furnival says this makes a big difference to the efficiency of the operation. “I can fill up with watery slurry in three minutes, or four to five minutes for thicker material. It is a lot quicker than loading my previous tanker.” Depending on the job, a tanker load will cover 0.6-0.8ha, with application related to forward speed. “I go a bit slower on the silage ground to give a heavier application, and quicker on pasture for a lighter dose if it is to be grazed again soon. “With my New Holland T7.270 on GPS auto-steer, I know exactly what area I am applying to and it is very accurate, with no misses or overlaps,” he says. but Mr Furnival says the applicator delivers a consistent flow of slurry, as long as the forward speed is maintained. “The first application went onto the silage ground at the end of March and we are hoping we can halve bag fertiliser requirements by making use of the nitrogen in slurry.
Rotation “Grazing land, which is on a 20-day rotation, normally gets 45 units of N every five to six weeks and we are hoping we can also cut some of this out,” he says. “We are aiming to increase the efficiency of the herd by getting more out of our grass, and a trailing shoe application should help us achieve this.”

Rake ramps up productivity C
overing the length and breadth of Anglesey, Simon Jones Contracting run some of the largest kit offered by manufacturers. Faced with tight weather windows and even tighter fields, owner Simon Jones says output is a priority and servicing the island’s farmers in a timely fashion requires serious firepower. To this end, the firm runs two forage harvesters; a 653hp New Holland FR650 and John Deere’s range topping 9900 with 970hp under its bonnet. With varying grass yields, keeping both foragers fed is a challenge, concedes Mr Jones, but he reckons with the purchase of Vicon’s largest rake, satisfying the veracious appetite of both machines is now more realistic. However, one-cut farms in particular present a massive challenge says Mr Jones, utilising the full horsepower offered by the John Deere 9900 when the rake is opened out fully. Arriving at the start of the grass season in 2019, the Andex replaced a Claas Liner 3600 and is the largest of three rakes run by the company, the other two being another Claas four-rotor and a twin-rotor from Kuhn. The move to the Vicon machine had multiple motives, not least

dealer backup, but also the theory of greater output. The company is familiar with the Vicon products, running a number of the manufacturer’s machines, including a front and rear mo-co combination and two sets of butterfly mowers including the latest 787T rear unit.
Adaptability Expected to cover over 2,400 hectares this year, the Andex 1505 pulls grass in from a maximum working width of 15 metres, offering plenty of adaptability, depending on the weight of the crop or the machine following. The main operator of the rake is
Arwel Hughes, who has been in the service of the company for 15 years, the last five of which, he has been pulling the island’s grass into swaths. Mr Hughes says the rake is rarely pulled in narrower than its maximum working width. “You do not buy a machine to run it at less than its full capacity,” he says. “Rowing up 15m of grass is a big step up for us, previously covering 12.5m per pass. That extra capacity means the chopper is being fed a bigger swath and making the most of the available horsepower.” However, that is not to say that it is slowing the foragers down. Both Mr Jones and Mr Hughes concur that
the foragers, especially the New Holland FR650, are running sweeter. Mr Hughes says: “Whatever you put in front of the John Deere, she will eat it and spit it out the spout, with all but the heaviest single cut farms posing any sort of challenge to its output. “But, where the New Holland is concerned, even though we are pulling more into the swath, she is actually going better, with a faster forward speed as a result of the consistent swath.” The pair put this down to the formation of the swath. Mr Hughes says: “When you look at the swath produced, it is even with no lumps.

He says this makes for a more even and precise swath, while maintaining good visibility to the back of the rotors. Ground contouring also gets a tick, according to Mr Hughes, with hydraulic down pressure from the arms ensuring all grass is collected. Height is also set hydraulically, while the drop point is manually adjusted on each rotor, with an easy to read gauge present, says Mr Hughes. He also commends the build quality of the rake. Mr Hughes says: “You can tell it has a good amount of steel from the weight of it.” He also comments on the strength of the tine arms and the number of them. “We never had much trouble with the Claas arms, but these are heavier and stronger. There are also more of them on this rake than the old one, which had 12 per rotor. This one has 13 on the front two and 15 on the rear two, which makes sense, considering the rear two rotors are doing much more work. “The rear tine arms also carry five sets of tines, rather than the four found on the front pair, and all round on the Claas, adding to this machine’s robustness.” However, the weight of the rotors and supporting arms takes considerable effort to lift, Mr Hughes says: “My Valtra T174 has a 200 litre/minute pump. You would not want

much less than that, or lifting at headlands and in short ground would be too slow.” The rake is also considerably longer than its predecessor, at just under 10m. The extra metre appears to be behind the steering axle says Mr Hughes, posing a risk when turning out of gateways. He has ordered a camera to be fitted on the rear of the machine, giving him a better view of the tail swing when turning. The rake also only has storage for one spare rotor wheel, which is insufficient for a rake of its size says Mr Hughes. However, he commends its manoeuvrability, with its steering axle.

Automatic The rake is compatible with Vicon and parent company Kverneland’s Geo function, which offers automatic lifting of individual rotors, based on a GPS map. However, given the size and shape of the fields on the island, Mr Jones in consultation with Mr Hughes decided not to add the automatic features offered, as they felt they would not get the full benefit of the system. Mr Jones says the operator needs to be in full control and ‘on the ball’ in many of the fields that are harvested, and therefore did not think it necessary for the additional technology. However, the rake is still operated via IsoBus through the Valtra’s SmartTouch screen, providing easy operation, says Mr Hughes. This is connected to the tractor’s joystick making precise movements when rowing up headlands also easier, he says. Although the outfit operate in many a tight field, for Mr Jones, quality staff and machines are of the utmost importance. He says the rake has and will continue to provide a much needed boost to output demanded by his customers and to keep feeding his grass hungry choppers, as the weather windows tighten and crop yields increase.

As demand from local customers grew, contractor Sherwin and Sons took delivery of a Jo combi-baler mid-way through last year’s grass season. Alex Heath finds out how it has

ased in Tarvin, Cheshire, Sherwin and Sons offer a range of agricultural contracting services, with particular focus on the needs of dairy farmers which populate the surrounding area. Previously, the company had relied on a Claas 3200 Quadrant square baler to make haylage and silage bales for customers, as well as a hefty workload of straw and hay, the majority of which is destined to feed dairy herds. However, demand has grown for the outfit to justify a combination round baler/wrapper. Ben Sherwin says after having the John Deere C441R combi-baler on demo halfway through the silage season last year, it never left the contractor’s yard. As well as demand, there have been

Having had experience using a McHale Fusion and witnessed plenty of other brands, he says it was the logical step for the business, offering a one pass baling service for customers which also rely on the contractor for other foraging needs.

Bale density is a strong point for the combi-baler, says Mr Sherwin. Wholly dependent on the crop, he reckons the baler is consistently packing 900kg of heavy grass into a 125cm diameter bale, while hay and haylage weights are upwards of 500kg, depending on the dry matter. He says customer’s weighing bales into diet feeders have reported consistency and are pleased with the weights packed into them. He says: “Last year, I baled alongside a Fusion in silage “The John Deere definitely had the edge on output, with bale density and number baled per hour ahead of the McHale machine.” Mr Sherwin reckons a 1,000 bale day is not beyond the realms of possibility with this machine. designed for use in grass, Mr Sherwin has also used it in straw. He says: “We have baled some of our own straw as well as customer’s. “It makes a good tight bale in all types of straw. Baling behind a rotary combine with short straw lengths, it keeps the material tight with good shoulders,” he adds. An even crop flow is partly responsible for the baler’s output, reckons Mr Sherwin. A four-rotor rake is used ahead of the baler, which Mr Sherwin says fills the 2.2-metre-wide pickup reel, which features five tine rows and a cam track. “In all conditions, it will just eat the crop,” he says. As with most combi-balers, forward speed is governed by the wrapping unit, ensuring enough wrap is applied. However, with this baler, Mr Sherwin says the wrapping table is consistent and the speed of application is ‘impressive’. Having seen other makes in operation, he says this one is faster than anything else on the market, with transfer from the chamber to the wrapping table also swift. “We apply six to eight layers of wrap, adjusting forward speed slightly to match up with the rate of wrap application,” he says. “With other makes that can be quite

a drastic reduction, but we are only dropping a couple of Ks, which makes a big difference on our daily output.” Having baled on what Mr Sherwin describes as severe slopes, he reports there have been no issues with ejection from the chamber, or bales moving while on the transfer mechanism. “It does not matter what degree you are sitting at when transferring bales, the wrapping table will catch the bale,” he adds.
Bounce This is in part due to the wrapping table sliding forward to collect the bale, rather than having an arm underneath moving the bale rearwards. This keeps the bale in the centre of the machine, he says. Although not specified by Mr Sherwin, he likes the twin axle configuration. “Unlike a single axle, you do not get the bounce and jumping on the drawbar with two axles underneath, especially evident as the bale rolls to the back of the machine during changeover,” he says. He also adds stability is enhanced and the baler feels much more planted

on undulating terrain. Mr Sherwin highlights a number of practical features that make the baler more user friendly. “The plastic storage doors swing down to a manageable height, meaning you are not having to man handle 30kg rolls above your head,” he says. Controlling this is a panel either side of the baler, mounted on the mudguards. It provides a number of functions including rotating the satellites on the wrapper. The machine also stores two extra rolls of net wrap internally, making it a cinch to refill when the net has run out, he says. He reckons this will provide enough net for a full day’s baling. Power-wise, Mr Sherwin says his 6155R from the same manufacturer was more than ample for the baler, but due to the varying workload of the fleet, the predominant tug is now a JD 6195R fitted with the manufacturer’s AutoPowr continuously variable transmission. Fitted with the manufacturer’s Maxicut HC 25 Premium rotor, knife options extend to 0, 12, 13 or 25. Mr Sherwin says on the whole one of the half sets is used, with chop length

reportedly consistent, somewhere between 50 and 75mm, subsequently increasing bale density further. When we caught up with him, he was baling 13 hectares on a farm that would have previously required the chopper and silage gang to attend, halting other spring work being carried out, such as maize drilling and slurry applications. “From an efficiency point of view, this is far superior,” he says. “In the past, this grazing farm we are on today would have required five machines to collect its surplus grass - a costlier operation. “Now, it is truly a one-man job, with the farm collecting the bales as and when suits them.”
