AN INTRODUCTION

Food for the Hungry Canada

WHO WE ARE

Our Purpose

To end poverty, one community at a time. Our Promise

To graduate communities from poverty in 10 years.

Food for the Hungry (FH) Canada is a Christian non-profit dedicated to ending poverty worldwide. Globally, Food for the Hungry has been serving the vulnerable through relief and development since 1971. We serve without regard to race, creed, or nationality. We strive to respect the culture and customs of the people we serve in order to affirm their humanity and dignity.

Before, we felt hopeless. Partnering with FH was like a door that opened to a lot of opportunities. It changed our minds and we realized that we in fact have so much.

I’ve seen the impact when we bring people together—the disabled, the elderly, the poor. I see it bring hope to them, to their kids, to their families, and to their future.

WHAT WE DO

There is no one-size-fits-all development plan. FH recognizes every community presents unique challenges and opportunities. FH collaborates with local leaders and government to discern each community’s particular vision for a preferred future, creates a unique plan, and adjusts programming accordingly.

We believe in an integrated approach. Programs focused on education, health, livelihoods, and leadership training are interwoven with the themes of gender and child protection, environmental renewal, and a transformed worldview. Activities in various programs are integrated to ensure the maximum impact of every input, training, and infrastructure improvement. This process stimulates sustainable change and fosters hope for a future community that is constantly improving their well-being, increasing resiliency, and caring for one another.

Then, together we celebrate! Graduation occurs when the community exhibits the capacity to continue its positive trajectory of change—under its own leadership, without FH’s presence. Together with community leaders, we look for indicators like:

• improved child growth rates, literacy rates, embrace of gender dignity, and sustainable income levels

• resilience to face future shocks and challenges

• an ability and desire from community members to care for their neighbours

• a renewed worldview, shown by a sense of hope for the future

WHY IT WORKS

We address the root issues of poverty. How you define a problem determines how you will solve the problem. Our development model begins by helping people understand their God-given value and potential. This changes how people see themselves, their families, and the world around them.

We believe in community-owned development. At the core of FH activities is our belief in “ walking with ” rather than “ doing for. ” Community leaders are intentionally involved in the creation of grassroots solutions to poverty. Families are empowered to walk alongside their neighbours and generously support one another.

We see the big picture. It takes more than food and clean water for a community to thrive, so we don’t focus on just one thing. Recognizing that each community faces unique challenges as well as advantages, FH is committed to an integrated, holistic approach to development, including priorities such as agriculture, education, health, leadership, and gender equality.

We hire locally. Over 98 percent of the 3,000 FH staff members are citizens of the countries where they work. They’re from there; they get it.

We leave. FH walks with communities for about 10 years. When a community is able to sustain their growth independently and own their development journey, FH moves on to a new community. We call this milestone graduation.

OUR PROGRAMS

There is no age limit for education. I took part in an adult literacy program. My husband got fishery training. Our son learns good health practices in Kids’ Club. I recently got marriage proposals for our teenage daughters; thanks to FH values lessons, I refused those.

Education

Formal schooling, workshops, and one-on-one coaching is at the core of FH’s work. Your support ensures school enrollment for kids and provides training for educators and parents. FH provides school supplies, sports and arts equipment, teacher training, and helps build schools. Community adult literacy is a priority.

Health

FH organizes mother-to-mother health training groups, hygiene and sanitation workshops, and mobile medical clinics. FH facilitates the installation of household taps, latrines, and kitchen gardens. Boreholes, capped springs, and safe storage techniques dramatically reduce illnesses.

Livelihoods

To raise family incomes FH trains community members to grow their capital, secure low-interest loans, and live debt free through savings groups. Agriculture workshops, demonstrations, and livestock provision boost production. Small business training and accounting workshops equip entrepreneurs.

“ ”

Leadership Training

FH hosts workshops on leadership training, gender equality, children’s rights, and building resilience. This work unifies community leaders, facilitates disasterpreparedness planning, and organizes committees to own their development after graduation.

Relief & Humanitarian Assistance

When crises strike, meeting basic needs is the first step toward thriving. FH collaborates with like-minded international partners to respond swiftly and effectively. FH Canada ships medical supplies, deworming medication, and micro-nutrient food supplements.

Orphaned at a young age, Manjeri and her siblings entered the FH Child Sponsorship program. Years later, she is a confident woman. She has begun college and dreams of becoming a teacher or a nurse.

Now on many occasions I tutor my siblings and school mates. I feel a sense of purpose!
