DISCOVER FHK Located in the heart of Tilburg, and strongly connected to Theaters Tilburg, the art disciplines Theatre, Dance, Music, and Visual Arts can be found under one roof at the Fontys University of the Arts (FHK). Energy and creativity are bubbling on a daily basis. Yet, a professional artist needs more than ‘just’ talent. The art sector in its current guise demands flexibility and entrepreneurship as well. FHK intends to help you deal well with continuous change and progress. It offers an inspiring learning environment so you can develop the knowledge, attitude, and skills that you will need to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.

TILBURG MAKERSSTAD FHK is intimately connected with the city of Tilburg. Here, collaborations come about easily. The city offers a welcoming home to refreshing and innovative ideas, decisively pursued in postindustrial surroundings. There is a special vibe that prompts people to become involved in making, creating, innovation, and risk-taking. Meeting, developing, relaxing, and enterprising are keywords for everything that is organised by and for students. Tilburg Makersstad is an inexhaustible source of energy.

at an international level. That is why we introduced the Academy of Music and Performing Arts last year. Under AMPA, the traditional conservatory is replaced by an academy that puts cooperation central stage. Being an artist, in our view, rests on six important pillars, the Key Skills, as well as on high artistic quality.

KEY SKILL ENSEMBLE PLAYING Playing as part of an ensemble is the focus of the programme. All other skills are subject to this. Working with a collective format teaches the students flexibility and shows them what it means to be an individual within a group, how to share responsibility, and how to divide tasks. The students join an ensemble, led by a coach, from their first week at the Academy. The ability to collaborate scores highly during assessments throughout the course.

KEY SKILL INTERDISCIPLINARITY A thriving musical sector does not evolve in isolation. To maintain high quality across the music world, influences from other disciplines are important. AMPA shares a building with a number of other art schools within the FHK. The interaction between theatre, dance, and music greatly benefits musicians so AMPA really utilizes the unique art cluster within FHK. AMPA helps its students to become music professionals who are able to operate across a broad range. The music students also take lessons in dance, theatre, circus, and the visual arts from the start of their studies.

KEY SKILL SELF MANAGEMENT To help our students become independent, confident, and responsible musicians it is important that they develop the skills that go hand in hand with self-management. Discernment is

EVELIEN KEESMAAT MY VOICE BECAME MY INSTRUMENT AROUND THE AGE OF 20

As KEES, Evelien Keesmaat (vocalist) creates and performs her own music – Dutch-language electronic rock. She is also the musical leader of the theatre collective De Vrouwen van Wanten, writes its music, and performs. She has an acoustical duo, ROGAN, with Marit Thus, that plays covers. Yet, when Evelien Keesmaat was 11, her chosen instrument was the saxophone. “I did not grow up in a musical family but took recorder lessons with Mrs. Bleeker in primary school. I was not particularly inspired by the instrument but was totally into making music. I took saxophone lessons and played with the local fanfare and various bands for years. It was always a given that I did vocals as well. Only when I was 20 I realised it was something I could really do. Then my voice became my main instrument.” Once she switched to Jazz Vocals with Paulien van Schaik at the Fontys Conservatory, everything fell into place. “Fontys is a relatively small college so there is a lot of room for individual approaches. You can find your own way, develop your own taste. On top of this, Paulien van Schaik is an amazing singer and teacher and I really wanted to study with her.” When she was still a student, Keesmaat

reached the semi-finals of the Dutch Jazz Vocalist Competition. She also joined the Fontys Jazz Choir, with which she toured China, among others. Keesmaat has been active as a singer and music teacher for quite a while. She will teach at AMPA, her alma mater, from this year onward. “Of course it is inspirational to engage with music every day and to be taught by great teachers. But what was really valuable to me was to meet other musicians; they become part of your future network. To see everyone else being really active keeps you on

your toes. It is challenging.” What is Keesmaat’s dream as a musician? “I hope to touch people and use my music to bring them together. It is such a treat to see how an audience merges into one during a concert and how everyone starts to resonate with the specific vibe of the evening. It feels as if I am only starting to find my own sound these past years and finally have something to say. I am

One project that is planned for this academic year revolves around Schumann’s Frauenliebe und -Leben and Dichterliebe, a theatrical song programme. It tells the story of a loving relationship from a feminine as well as masculine viewpoint. Händel’s and Mozart’s recitatives are the subject of another project. Most vocal students prefer to sing arias rather than recitatives whereas the action in an opera largely takes place during the
