TILBURG PREPARES FOR ANOTHER SIZZLING AND UNIQUE JAZZ FESTIVAL

SEPTEMBER ‘MAKE IT’ JAZZ FESTIVAL Friday 21 & Saturday 22 September evening | Tilburg The first edition of the brand-new ‘Make It’ jazz festival is taking place at various locations in Tilburg. ‘Make It’ provides a stage for the jazz stars of the future with an exciting programme that features big names such as New Cool Collective big band, Lilly King Trio, and Gilad Hekselman’s ZuperOctave, but also introduces young musicians and bands competing for first place in an epic jazz round.

thought it was a little strange that a city like Tilburg didn’t have a jazz festival yet,’ says Van der Drift. ‘With the ‘Make It’ festival, we are going to change this.’ ‘Make It’ is a two-day long festival that is focused on presenting new talent. The AMPA Jazz Round will take place during the opening night on Friday and presents new musicians at various locations throughout the city. ‘We based the jazz round on the well-known pop music competition, where the chosen bands

can perform in various cities’, explains Romanello. ‘We wanted to apply the same concept to the jazz round.’ ‘Stage experience is incredibly important to musicians who are just starting out,’ adds Smits. ‘With the AMPA jazz competition, we offer new musicians the opportunity to gain this vital experience.’ In addition to this thrilling jazz round, you can also watch Gilad Hekselman’s ZuperOctave on the jazz stage at Paradox. On Saturday you can expect a full house at Theaters Tilburg with an exciting programme curated by Jeroen van Vliet, the New Cool Collective big band, and Jasper Blom.

The festival organizers are positive about a future in which this jazz festival can define its own place between established festivals in the Tilburg area such as Mundial and Woo-Hah. ‘We want to surprise people and ensure that they can’t wait to attend the next edition next year,’ concludes Romanello.

This also applies to being enterprising, to communication, and to personal development, which are all essential elements to starting out as a professional musician. But why do I think that it is a privilege to be a part of this study programme and what makes it so special? The answer is simple: because it has allowed me to experience beautiful, engaging, innovative, and captivating performances these past six months. Just to give you an idea: I saw a performance with musicians as mysterious moving characters; I have experienced virtual reality in reverse during an innovative recital at a pop music festival; I have heard how electronically-generated sound can be integrated in an ensemble of acoustic instruments; and I experienced a concert for brass band, percussionists, and electronic music that offers new opportunities for wind and percussion and brass bands. In short, I was amazed and

NOVEMBER MUSIC PROJECT WEEK 2 to 9 November ‘s-Hertogenbosch The theme for our first project week is November Music. This festival traverses all genres with music from today created and performed by the makers of the present. November Music presents the latest developments in music in which makers and composers draw on contemporary composed music, jazz, new world music, musical theatre, visual music, electronics & soundscapes, and sound installations. November Music is taking place at various locations across ’s-Hertogenbosch. Over the years, the festival has grown into one of the most important international festivals for contemporary music in the Netherlands. A contemporary music festival is the perfect way for AMPA students to start to explore the latest musical developments. They discover new areas, push their boundaries, and make the unheard heard. Our students take part in the workshops, seminars, projects, interviews, and concerts which November Music organizes. Together with alumna Sanne Rambags, F.C. Jongbloed student ensemble led by Aart Strootman, composer Kate Moore and saxophonist Dick de Graaf, they search for the sound of the future. Students from the composition study programme write new pieces for November Music which are performed during the various concerts presented during the festival. These pieces can be heard everywhere: from the art route to the evening concerts.

NEW COLLABORATION WITH THE SOUTH NETHERLANDS PHILHARMONIC

Our music study programmes are linked with the professional field and last year we started a partnership with various ensembles-inresidence such as Ensemble Klang, TEMKO, and ASKO|Schönberg. Several of our lecturers are also members of these ensembles, which makes the collaboration that much more special. Some lecturers are also members of the South Netherlands Philharmonic, which meant that a renewed collaborative effort was on the cards. It gives our students the opportunity to follow masterclasses presented by soloists invited by the orchestra. It is also important to the development of our students that they attend rehearsals and concerts. Through work placement positions, Master’s students are even allowed to play with the orchestra, so they can learn from highlyexperienced orchestra musicians. We are exploring further collaborations for the future, namely in the fields of education and innovation. The basic principle of this collaboration is to have students and professionals learn from one another. The collaboration with the South Netherlands Philharmonic inspires the musicians of the future and gives orchestral music an anchored place in a changing world.

CHELSEA FOREMAN COMBINES HER SINGING CAREER WITH COACHING HER COLLEAGUES

Chelsea Foreman spent some time searching for her calling in life before becoming aware of her musical talent. She participated in variety of sports ranging from handball, badminton, and synchronized swimming to street dance, gymnastics, and yoga. However, once she had discovered her passion for music she tried the recorder, drums, and piano before settling on the accordion. After eight years, she made the transition to singing and everything fell into place. Chelsea now has her own vocal coaching practice.

Chelsea grew up in Valkenswaard in a family of five. Her mum is from the Dutch province of Brabant and her dad from the UK. Despite

first deciding to work in health care, music always remained a keen interest. Out of sheer curiosity rather than a burning passion to become a musician, she decided to do an audition at the Fontys Academy of Music. Quite unexpectedly she was accepted and, after weighing up the options, she decided to follow her dream to study voice as her main subject at the Fontys Academy of Music. After completing her Bachelor’s degree, Chelsea gathered the courage to continue her musical development by embarking on the Master of Music programme. ‘I have always loved teaching. So, it seemed like a good idea to do that at an academy of music. However, to do that you need a Master’s degree.’ This also helped her to set up her own vocal coaching practice and

Whoever believes that this Spaniard has no ambition is sorely mistaken. ‘I want to develop myself as an entrepreneurial musician!’ In addition to professionalizing his skills as a cellist, he wants to learn everything there is to know about self-management, communication, and collaboration. If you ask Eduardo about his future, he is crystal-clear in his reply: ‘being a musician is fun, but teaching appeals to me more.’ He sees himself as a mentor. ‘As a main subject lecturer you have enormous influence on both the musical and personal development of a student. But this can be positive or negative. I’ll definitely focus on the positive!’ However, Eduardo thinks it would be fun to be part of a contemporary ensemble. ‘A musician undergoes continuous development primarily by playing.’ Although he only just started his second year, Eduardo has already taken significant steps. With his wide range of interests in music and his musical interpretation based on a broad historical and technical background, he sets himself apart from other musicians.

The performance was given an added dimension with visuals created by students from the Academy of Art, Communication and Design (ArtCoDe) and by a dance performance by students from the Dance Academy. ‘The collaboration with the Dance Academy and ArtCoDe was really special.’ ‘The most important factor that led me to go and study at AMPA was my teacher Valerie Debaele. I don’t know anyone who excels on both a musical and educational level as she does.’ But the curriculum offered by AMPA was also an important deciding factor for Eduardo. The focus on interdisciplinarity, the research process, and the flexibility within the curriculum are real plus points for him. ‘No academy of music can give you everything you want, but AMPA offers things that you can’t get anywhere else.’ AMPA is also excellent at welcoming international students explains Eduardo. ‘The opportunities that the extensive programme presents and the fact that the entire programme is taught in English ensures that foreign musicians feel at home here.’

The exploration of music is his speciality.
