Master of Music

Bianca Bongers student master of Music

‘From a very young age I knew that I wanted to be a cellist. After completing my secondary school education, I visited several conservatories and talked with teachers. In the end, I chose Tilburg because of the fantastic cello teacher, Monique Heidema. After the bachelor’s degree programme, I knew for certain that I also wanted to do the master’s degree programme. Besides the classes at the Conservatory, I can also attend courses and master classes in the Netherlands and abroad. The nice thing about this is that you really start to think about what you actually want to do!

You are encouraged to show initiative, and your tutor is always open to questions and ideas. Many things appear to be possible here. I can, for instance, adjust my study programme entirely to my interests. Sometimes it is difficult having to take the initiative so often to approach teachers. The subject ‘Entrepreneurship’ also demands a lot of your organisational skills. I, myself, am mainly focused on the performing side of my subject, and the practising this requires. Still, I’m glad that we also learn about the commercial side of the profession – something that every musician needs in the future! My research coach, Arnold Marinissen, gives me the best professional and inspiring support in doing my master research. I’m really happy with that! But the most important person for me is, of course, my cello teacher. Her dedication and her ceaseless support mean a lot to me. She offers me the tools needed to become a professional musician. That’s what it’s all about in this course! In the future I hope to be working as a performing musician in a broad domain. My great passion is the new classical music of today. It is my dream to be part of an ensemble, playing music of contemporary composers and also composing music ourselves. I also love baroque and I like to play basso continuo. And, last but not least, the romantic repertoire has an essential place in my programme. A few years ago, I also started as a cello teacher – it gives me energy and I would love to continue to do this. The coming years will tell what the future will hold for me. Who knows!’

The Master of Music is a joint project of the Conservatory of Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts (FHK) in Tilburg and the Conservatory Zuyd Hogeschool in Maastricht, a cooperation of the artistic education between both colleges.

After having graduated from these Master studies, you receive the certificate ‘Master of Music’. This master degree is acknowledged by the Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie (NVAO).

The curriculum and the graduation profiles The Master of Music is not just two more years of musical education. You start with a clear plan in mind. What are you going to do in these two years? Before your audition, you hand in an educational plan. This plan supports your personal capacities and interests, and indicates your perception of your future professional situation, after two years of training. The training is student-centered. On the basis of your audition and your educational plan, it is decided whether you will be accepted or not. The programme is all-encompassing. The Master of Music gives you the opportunity to make choices within the fixed curriculum on the basis of your talent, entry level, motivation and learning issues. You choose one of the graduation profiles: - performing or - performing with the emphasis on education. The artistically technical and professional development are central in each graduation profile. You are also trained in research skills and the initiation and execution of applied research. In addition to this, much attention is paid to your professional position in society and your communicative skills. 3

Majors Within your graduation profile, you find a whole range of majors to choose from: • instrumental classical music • vocal classical music (opera, operetta, solo singing) • music theatre (only in Tilburg) • instrumental jazz, pop music and popular music • vocal jazz, pop music and popular music • ancient music (ancient instrumental music and vocal ensemble music) (only in Tilburg) • composition classical music • composition/arranging jazz and pop music • conducting (brass band, symphony orchestra, big band) and choral conducting • music theory The curriculum is focussed on obtaining the final qualifications. These are centered around the following six domains:

1. Artistic and technical development The core business of the training is your artistic and technical development. The main subject of your chosen major is pivotal. You receive individual major tutorials and participate in ensemble activities (ensembles and projects) and in international orientation (master classes abroad, summer schools, Erasmus activities).

2. Personal and professional development

4. Your position as a professional in society

In your personal and professional development, all your fields of study come together. We look upon you as a musical personality that is capable of selfreflection. You are able to make the right choices in your further musical development. You and your field of learning are pivotal. To a large extent, you yourself are the designer of your studies and responsible for the outcome.

During your master training, you learn how to take up a position as a professional in society. We offer lectures and workshops to give you an insight into how artistic establishments are organized and function. Here, among other things, we discuss music, legal matters and marketing.

You concretize your choices in your educational plan. Here you write down how you want to realize your final qualifications, and how you want to materialize your personal and professional development.

5. Communication and cooperation During your master training, you learn to present yourself and your ideas. During lectures and workshops, much attention is paid to written and oral presentations.

3. Research skills Considering the level of the training, it is essential that you should acquire research skills. You attend a research programme that is directly linked to your artistic development, and is aimed at the musical profession and/or the practise of music. That is why research is an important part of the training. You develop research skills, execute a research project, and give a presentation of the results in a musical context. Together with a coach, you execute your research project on a subject of your own choice. The student with the graduation profile performing with the emphasis on research will execute a more in-depth research project.

6. Education: methodically, didactically and pedagogically (only for those students who choose the graduation profile performing with the emphasis on education) You enhance your knowledge in the field of subject methology, didactics, pedagogics and education. Here you develop useful insights and skills that enable you to make a contribution to vocational education on music and to the education of art and culture. The fields of study are specified into concrete learning objectives and are elaborated in a training programme, both with respect to content and to methods and assessments.

Costs of study (with reservation)

Classes by professionals both internal and external Students do not have to attend classes solely between the four walls of the college. That’s why every student receives a personal budget. In this way we create the possibility for you to attend classes given by other teachers and external professionals. Do you want to go and study with a famous teacher in Paris? There is a possibility to do that! But we ourselves do have highly qualified teachers whose classes you can attend. It is compulsory to spend at least 30% of your personal budget with the institute’s principal senior lecturer of your discipline. Apart from that, you can attend internal and external classes. Financial support for participating in international master classes and international orientation is possible.

Teaching package There are of course individual tutorials to attend. Apart from that, there are many ensemble activities (chamber music, combo’s, ensembles, orchestral projects). There is also much emphasis on international orientation ( master classes abroad, summer classes, Erasmus activities). And we offer possibilities for cooperation with Dutch professional orchestras, choirs and opera societies.

International Not only Dutch students but also many foreign students have discovered the Master of Music of Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts in order to attend this master training there.
