Karen Neervoort, new Dean of Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts (FHK
‘ The quality on hand at FHK is exceptional, all it needs now is an increase in exposure’ In every fibre of her being Karen Neervoort, the newly appointed Dean of Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts (FHK), is an ‘arts person’. “Art has the capacity to broaden your horizon, your options, and your visions”. of two decades. So it is safe to say that Neervoort is well-equipped to indicate how the Tilburg school is looked upon by the outside world. “Nationwide FHK is regarded as a very good comprehensive school for the arts, focusing strongly on the teacher training colleges. Now that I have seen and learned more, I think there is a necessity to position the autonomous arts and its makers more intensely. There is far more quality available than meets the eye. We have lots of gems and the quality is of an enormous magnitude. To pinpoint this is the school’s

Neervoort stresses the fact that she is not a job hopper, or an ‘interim management person’ who has come to solve a problem. If there is one leitmotiv that is characteristic of her career, so far, it must be loyalty. During her years in the world of the theatre she occupied herself with booking, promoting, marketing and education; eventually she became the managing director of the theatre Agnietenhof in Tiel. “I started out as a theatre scientist; looking back you might say that I observed this world through semi-

After a period of eight years came a moment of reflection; “I had no doubt whatsoever that I wanted to continue my career in the field of arts education. If there is one place where development can be experienced, where you philosophise actively on what the craft, the professional field and the student acquire, then this place is right here. Then there was this vacancy of dean of FHK, as a successor of Rien van der Vleuten. And then there was doubt. Neerveld did not feel the urge to abandon ArtEZ. But the lure to rule over an ‘entire’ institute for arts education, instead of just theatre and dance, was strong. “After the first few consultations, it was the ambience that settled the matter; very amenable and collegial. And I detect so much passion in so many people. The thing that strikes me as really special is that people here are frequently prepared

Tilburg and Terschelling foundation of the contemporary circus
At the Oerol Theatre Festival at Terschelling, first year students of the Academy for Circus and Performance Art are offered the opportunity to put into practice everything they have learned. You can hardly think of a better foundation for the rest of your training. ACaPA, the Academy for Circus and Performance Art in Tilburg is an internationally acclaimed school with a fair number of foreign students. But oddly enough, this Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts (FHK) training is relatively unknown at home in the Netherlands. Again, this became obvious at last year’s Oerol, the Terschelling based theatre festival. For the first time 25 students of ACaPA made their appearance. “The reaction of the audience was both one of surprise and of enthusiasm”, teacher and Oerol-group director Heleen de Hoon recollects. “Of course we are still a small school that was founded as recently as 2007, team leader John van Riemsdijk explains.”At the start all our energy went into setting up the organization and taking care of the education. It is only since last year that the focus on exposure has increased.” Van Riemsdijk is delighted that these kinds of festivals are part of the curriculum. Thus, students get a chance to turn their skills into performances. First year students go to Oerol, second year students alternate between the circus festival Circo Circolo

Wiessing stresses the fact that, in future, FHK’s focus will be aimed at more mobility for teachers, sharing projects with other institutes, and the combined implementation of learning processes. The latter could result in a partially joint curriculum, but also in combined internships. “The Academy for Teacher Training in Visual arts and Design not only wants its students to attend classes at the partner institute, but also wants them to join the students over there when they do their internship teaching at general schools. By doing so, they will obtain teaching experiences

For FHK the starting point has to be that, during the academic years, every student must get international experience. This does not mean that this should always take place in a foreign country. “A virtual collaboration with other students can also lead to an international experience. “ But above all she sincerely hopes that teachers will come to realize the importance of

and five years ago education was added to the programme”, the ACI teacher explains. “It is attended by teachers and students, but we were the first people of our school that addressed the audience there.” Zijp and Gribling were apprehensive about the number of people that would attend their speeches in Austin. However, with a constant attendance rate of 54 people during the entire two hours, they had a ‘full house’. Amongst the audience were primary and secondary schoolteachers, trade union leaders, artists, and also representatives of technical companies, such as NASA and Dell. The audience received a menu of bites of the educational module Creativity & Personality. “We gave them a number of interactive assignments”, Zijp explains. “The audience set to work enthusiastically”, Zijp says. “The interactive part was a rather new experience for these people”, Gribling adds. “They are not really used to that, over there.” They were both happy about the open attitude with witch their story was received. The two teachers are not sure whether there are more examples of collaboration between two schools within the Fontys institute. Zijp thinks lecturing at ACI is an inspiring experience. “My personal drive is to build bridges. ACI gave me the opportunity to help students to discover the surplus value of artistic creativity. “

For over two years, the Dance department of Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts has worked together with the dance academies of Antwerp, Prague and Leeds. Now, these advances have been rewarded with a substantial grant from the European Union Programme for education, training, youth and sport Erasmus+. This means a considerable expansion of the ‘learning together and professionalising’ programme.

With this project, the collaborating dance academies have set themselves multiple goals. For instance: whoever said that dancing is the sole privilege of people with perfect bodies? In Antwerp the theme is going to be inclusiedans (integrated dance). This means that, at a given moment in time, a performer may well be a dancer with limited mental or physical abilities. In Belgium various choreographers already work in this way, and so do some of their colleagues in England: Adam Benjamin, cofounder of the integrated dance company Candoco Dance Company, and Lloyd Newson and his company DV8.Last month, during our gathering in Antwerp, Candoco Dance Company gave workshops. For this purpose the Tilburg school uses the system My Mediasite; a web-based content management system which includes a web-based video editor and streaming server. This enables them to record and stream classes and workshops since the system has various cameras. These recordings can be preserved and used as teaching material.
