Ian Biscoe Digital Networked Arts: Practice in a Connected World
‘Wondering about the World. Peepshows and Wanderers as a Phenomenon of Reality’ is the title of the lecture of Tijn Vaes. It will show some characteristics about the origin and application of peepshows, related at examples of 19th Century German art, music and poetry. The content is about imaginative –but materialized – worlds (peepshows) versus experimented worlds (that of the Wanderer).
Small Groups, Great Music Master of Music presents a concert in the series ‘Small groups, great music’. This concert will be a showcase of the best work of the chamber music ensembles of Fontys Master of Music. The compositions in this concert were presented earlier this year during the chamber music examinations.
Menahem Pressler - Interview The living legend Menahem Pressler is guest at AMPA. The 94-year-old American pianist is at the center of various activities throughout the week. We start the week with an extensive interview. Listen to the stories of a special musician who worked and was friends with the best musicians and the greatest composers of the twentieth century.
Temko & Klang For the first time, contemporary music ensembles Temko & Klang join forces. Together they provide a program in honor of FsT100. Gaudeamus winner Aart Strootman writes new work for this occasion: Kinetic. In addition, the ensembles play different works from their own repertoire. Enjoy a surprising evening in the spectrum of jazz and classical, in which influences from minimalism, noise music and performance art pass by! Prior to the concert, Aart Strootman and Pete Harden will give an introduction to the FHK Refter at 7 pm.

Organist Ruud Huijbregts, trumpet player Jacq Sanders and trombonist Mark Boonstra, all three teachers at AMPA, provide an exclusive lunch concert in the Heikese Kerk in Tilburg. They play music from Guilmant, Wammes and Cochereau.

Menahem Pressler Concert AMPA is honored to welcome the 94-years-old Pressler. In addition to the interview and the masterclass, the world famous pianist also performs a concert in ‘de Concertzaal’ of Theaters Tilburg. After having performed more than fifty years of concerts with his piano trio ‘Beaux Arts Trio’, he plays solo this time.
30 May Nicolas Callot & Bart Rodyns A Harmonium & Piano duo was a common musical combination in the nineteenth century. Today, however, it is rare to hear the two instruments together. Nicolas Callot (harmonium) and Bart Rodyns (piano) have mastered this historic combination like no other. A unique opportunity to listen to this special duo. Persephassa Persephassa, by Greek composer Iannis Xenakis, is a musicpiece for six percussionists. It’s an iconic work and one of the most important percussion compositions of the twentieth century. The music spins around the audience, which gives a very special sensation. Xenakis is an important composer for percussionists; he has written a lot of work for percussion ensemble and percussion soloists and in his chamber music, percussion often plays a prominent role. Every percussionist get in touch with the work of Xenakis sooner or later, also the percussionists from AMPA.
Menahem Pressler Masterclass A public AMPA masterclass by the legendary American pianist Menahem Pressler. His long and successful career and his rich experiences are the basis of this masterclass. Visit the masterclass in the ‘Concertzaal’ of Theaters Tilburg and see the master at work!
From early experiments in telematic performance using satellites in the 1970s, the first outings for distributed dance and theatre in the 1990s through to current practice in networked performance where performers and audiences alike participate in real-time cross reality events. Ian will discuss the artistic and technical approaches taken by artists to embrace the opportunities of a world that is increasingly connected due to the availability of ubiquitous computing and network access (even if that connectivity may sometimes be limited or controlled due to social, economic or political reasons). In the second part of the lecture, Ian will provide - amply illustrated with visual material - examples of contemporary networked art and performance practice, including his own work in Studio Biscoe. Current practice in networked performance crosses the visual and performing arts (dance, theatre, music) and as such should be of interest to students and staff in all disciplines regardless of their technical expertise. The lecture will conclude with time for audience discussion and questions. Ian is a visual and performance artist with a background which crosses systems engineering, aerospace, mobile communications, multimedia technologies and architecture. As founder of Studio Biscoe (studiobiscoe.com) he has been involved with 12 international networked performances over the past four years, including projects across Europe and North America, collaborating with the likes of the New World Symphony (Miami), the Danish Royal Academy of Music (Copenhagen) and the Royal College of Music (London). In 2016, Ian created and produced Bridge to Everywhere:234 (bridgetoeverywhere.com) the first networked performance between the USA and Cuba, employing the largest outdoor projection screen in the USA as a virtual set in which all of the performers could coexist. His latest work The Spaces Within continues the theme of questioning the space and reality of performance in a networked world. It employs a range of cross reality technologies, such as virtual worlds and projection mapping, collaborating with musicians and dancers.
The Next Ensemble The conductors of The Next Ensemble, two enthusiastic master students, put the program together and then look for musicians who fit into the ensemble. By putting the musical content first, the occupation
varies from quartet to chamber orchestra. The repertoire includes music that has been composed over the past hundred years. Think of works by great composers such as: Berg, Ives & Stravinsky, but also compositions by the students themselves. Come and listen to this innovative combination of conductor and musician yourself!
Music & Researchfestival The Music & Research festival is organized by Fontys Master of Music and has a real festival vibe! A varied program with speakers, performances, food trucks and possibilities for networking. The festival ends with a spectacular final concert!
1 June Originals During Originals students from AMPA-Jazz will write and play their own compositions. Writing and playing original compositions is not only very common in jazz, it is also a necessary and useful tool to find your own way and identity in this music. On June 1st, all ensembles present the outcome of the week for all students and audiences.
Visual scores & Creation du Monde A final concert of a festive week should bring something special! Live music, video and circus. We take this evening with an interdisciplinary show in which collaboration is central.
Visual Scores Live music and video! Before the break you see Visual Scores: an exciting collaboration between the AMPA ensembles and the students of ArtCoDe (Art-Communication and Design.) Led by Lucas van Woerkum, the ArtCoDe students designed videos especially for existing music from the AMPA ensembles. The combination of image and sound is directed by our students’ composition, which send and influence the videos during the performance.
Création du Monde Live music and circus! After the break you see Creation du Monde: a colorful collaboration between AMPA students and students of the Fontys Academy of Circus and Performance Art. The composition Creation du Monde was written by the French composer Darius Milhaud. The interpretation by circus students is directed by Jur van de Lecq and Heleen de Hoon.
