LINE UP MAY 31

14:30 - 15:00

Time for a New Approach to Rhythm. One of the biggest gaps in higher musical education today lies in the area of rhythm. While basic theory is often given, a comprehensive approach grounded in the development of both the physical and intellectual aspects of rhythm is still missing. Today’s music explores a wide range of rhythmical complexities, often blending techniques from various styles such as popular and non-western musics, and existing rhythmic methods are rudimentary and out of date. This presentation will outline the basic and advanced approaches to rhythmic education which Ned teaches in his Advanced Rhythm and Pulse classes at the Utrecht Conservatory and in workshops around the world.

Do you already know how you can earn money with copyright? Or do you want to learn more about this? Then this is your chance. During the guest lecture, Buma / Stemra will explain in which ways you can earn money with copyright and what to look for if you release or perform musical works, or if you want to protect your creative ideas.

BUMA STEMRA

Buma / Stemra is a Dutch copyright organization that connects more than 25,000 composers, lyricists and music publishers to ensure that the rightholders receive fair compensation when their creations are used.

PAUL EENENS Director Paul Eenens will discuss the development and creation process of original new Dutch musical productions and more specific the creation of the music within. He will include the productions ‘Ciske de Rat’ and ‘Petticoat’ as examples (both with lyrics/book by André Breedland and music by Henny Vrienten and directed by Paul Eenens). In addition he will discuss his recently directed production ‘Was Getekend Annie M.G. Schmidt ‘ and the question how the (existing) music of Harry Bannink and lyrics by Annie M.G. Schmidt were developed into their (new) place, form, style and content.

AART STROOTMAN

On January 22nd 2003 NASA established final contact with ‘Pioneer 10’, a space probe launched in 1972. In a macrocosm that exceeds our imagination of distance and time, a transmission sent over 12 billion kilometers not only mark the last we have seen of Pioneer 10, but somehow it is also the last it has seen of us. Set to travel through the vast emptiness for the next 2 million years -craned with the finest of 70s technology- Pioneer 10 is one of the most distant remains of human presence and might be the first to reach new stellar objects. It is this slow farewell that inspired Aart Strootman to write Darkness Rises; a translation of technology and space itself into music. A 30 year-long radio transmission of Pioneer 10’s journey towards the unknown, comprehended into a 50-minute experience, including a sonification of the last dataset from Pioneer 10 ever to be received. He will talk about the piece and the relation between (sonic) science and music.

18:45 - 19:15

BINKBEATS’ SOUNDJOURNEY This lecture will be about the journey of Frank Wienk: From a percussionist to a modern day ‘producer’. He is going to talk about understanding the world of sound and extending the world of sound. Frank will also share his thoughts about working with technology and understanding it and the challenges and possibilities of live playing.

Joost Lijbaart Sanne Rambags Bram Stadhouders

UNDER THE SURFACE ‘What would happen to our mind if we create something out of thin air?’’ That question popped up more and more frequently in the mind of drummer Joost Lijbaart. Being a jazz musician he is used to improvisation within the structure of tune and melody, but he watned to let go of those boundaries and improvise spontaneously. Lijbaart: ‘’I performed with Bram and Sanne before on some occasions. After a couple of sessions and concerts together the idea of a fully improvised album became a logical next step because we had so much in common. The blend of Sanne’s voice in combination with guitar and drums feels very natural. The lyrics, her whispering, talking and singing are so nigh the human body that it creates a prime vulnerability which makes the music open and accessible. Bram Stadhouders is one of the most creative musicians I know. His presence, both as a soloist or an accompanist plus his profusion of sounds renders all three of us the sensation that we are able to fly.
