short stuff by Linda McThrall Let’s Go! Editor
This is a big year for people who were born in 1952. A lot of my friends have reached their big birthday. I have a few months to go before I get there, but it has really weighed on me since the new year began. There is something weird about turning 60. Turning 60 gives you pause. There is a really strong chance you are not going to live another 60 years. I was pretty confident up until this year that I could live to double my age. (I know, 118 is no spring chicken, but it seems more doable than 120.) But here’s the deal: I am grateful every day for what I have in my life. I have a husband who loves me and who can still make me laugh after all these years (32), and a daughter who has grown in to a beautiful, caring young woman with a great future. I have reconnected with old friends, made new ones and remain close with those I’ve known for years. I am blessed with a brother and sister who are amazing human beings, and a mother who is the best mom on the planet. I have a great job and work with people who genuinely care about their work and what they do. I don’t think I have worked anywhere where I liked every single person as much as I do these guys. My country of origin, while certainly flawed, still is the greatest country on earth. I am proud of my heritage. I was born in a little town that shaped me. I have friends from there I have known since I was a baby. Those people remain attached to our hometown and each other whether they still live there or have moved away, like we did. I attended a large high school; more
than 700 kids graduated in my class. I have stayed in touch with a number of my friends from those days, and I have been fortunate to have reunited with others I hadn’t heard from in 40 years. I returned to my home town to start college. I made friends from all over the country, really beginning my foray into knowing something more than my immediate world. I fell in love for the very first time and remain in love with that boy who grew up without me. After two years, I left there and moved to Arizona, where I have been since 1973. I graduated from ASU with a degree in journalism and had the amazing good fortune to land a job right out of school – at The Fountain Hills Times. I thought I was such a grown up, and came to work every day ready for another great adventure. My adventures probably were pretty invisible to most, but to me, I was thrilled to be a real live reporter working on a real live newspaper. I was here for six years and moved back to the state where my parents lived, working on another small-town newspaper. After three years, we wanted to be back in the desert and returned to Phoenix. After a year-long stint with a Scottsdale magazine, I left the field of journalism and worked in the nonprofit world. During that time, after 13 years of marriage, our daughter was born. I was 40 and felt like my real life was really starting. In 2005, I had a call from Alan Cruikshank, the publisher of The Times and Let’s Go, asking me if I might be interested in working with him again. I didn’t hesitate, so here I am back. If all those things don’t add up to a really good life, I don’t know what does. The people in my life are what have made this a grand ride. I don’t especially LOVE the idea of turning 60, but when it comes down to it, it sure beats the alternative. And so as I watch my friends have their birthdays before I do, I’ll be ready when mine rolls around. And I am going to celebrate big time. I have a million things left to do, and I’m starting right now.

n an unassuming strip mall situated out in Northeast Scottsdale where Via Linda and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard curve and intersect sits a gem of a restaurant. George Yang opened up George & Son’s after the birth of his first and only son. In honor of the special event he named his restaurant accordingly. The restaurant business was familiar to Yang, he grew up in Burma and was exposed to spices, aromas and flavors of many different cuisines. As a result, George & Son’s is a cross-cultural restaurant. George & Son’s most popular dish is Shrimp with Honey Glazed Walnuts. Other signature dishes include Citrus Chicken, Seafood Pockets and Spicy Crackling Calamari. The menu also offers many noodle dishes, a staple in Asian cooking. Lo Mein, Chow Mein and Pad Thai can be found at George & Son’s. Tofu dishes are also available. Spicier dishes include Kung Pao Three Seas, a combination of wonderful shrimp, scallops and fillet of fish and Dragon & Phoenix, a medley of shrimp and chicken all in a spicy sauce.

Studio Movie Grill Location, Contact Information, Parking: SMG (Studio Movie Grill) is located at 15515 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale, 85260. www. studiomoviegrill.com; (480) 991-3106. This is the location of the former Sonora Village movie theaters on the east side of Hayden Road near Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. There is plenty of free parking available. Show Times and Tickets: Shows have been every Thursday in March and April, but they may be cutting back to once or twice a month to build a bigger audience, so check the website to be sure there is a show. Doors open at 7 p.m. with show time around 7:30 p.m. Most of the time the show will be over by 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 cash at the door. They are not taking reservations at this point. If you friend either Boomer Nichols or BruHaHa Productions on Facebook, he usually posts an announcement on the lineup for each week’s show. Beverage and Food Service: There is a full menu including salads, quesadillas and tacos, pizza, hamburgers and other sandwiches and dinners as well as alcoholic and
non-alcoholic beverages. Service comes right to your seat and was very prompt. The food was very good. The full menu can be viewed on the website. There is no two-item minimum. The other venues for paid comedy shows can’t match the choices you have here. The Venue: The former movie theaters have been converted to accommodate a “dinner and movie” format much like the former Farrelli’s or the current iPic and Ultrastar movie theaters. You can sit in individual chairs at long counters or in couples lounge chairs with swing-away tables. Each seat has an individual button to summon your food and beverage service. The theater can accommodate about 130. Lighting and sound were perfect with no distractions. The performers are easily visible from the entire room. The Comedians: This show is booked by Boomer Nichols who also booked the show at Fountini’s in Fountain Hills before it was discontinued. The talent is definitely a cut above the free shows around town. Boomer is using headliners who have other jobs in the valley on the ensuing weekend so you may see people who will be headlining shows at Stand Up Scottsdale or other venues the next night. The other performers are usually the top notch local comics who are good enough to earn their pay. Rating: If you are looking for comedy in the northeast valley on Thursday nights, this show is the place to be. The venue is great and you can catch dinner and still be home at a decent hour. My rating is cc+. (*Note: Ratings are based on the overall quality of a club. CCC=best; CC=above average; C=average.) You have seen us walk past the dog park or around the fountain, and as walkers we appreciate the greetings many of you take the time to say. But the real stars are on the ground – the wonderful rescue dogs. We walk with all kinds of dogs, big and small, all happy to be outside going for a walk. Something we all consider a trivial thing makes a world of difference to these animals, and that makes it worth it to us. This all started when three of us were walking the Breast Cancer 3Day in 2010. We had to walk a lot to train for that; 60 miles is quite a distance, and we were out and about training daily. One of our member’s dogs had passed recently, and the other two dogs were older and sadly unable to walk with us. Maureen knew

there were rescue dogs boarded at Pal’s Inn and asked if we could walk them. Pal’s Inn jubilantly said yes, and that is how we got started! We were immediately joined by friends and family members, wonderful people who love dogs and enjoy walking them. As soon as we walk into the building, every rescue dog knows that caring people are about to take them for a walk outside. They get to behave as most dogs do for a while, and the air is heavy with tension. Stepping inside the kennel, to the dogs, is akin to being a football team in a stadium, the wall of noise is almost deafening. You can tell even if you can’t understand them that the dogs are happy. The dogs know they will be taken for a walk, they know they get to go outside and experience another beautiful morning and they know they are going to get to spend it with an equally beautiful person. We do not just walk these dogs ,of course. Our ultimate goal is that every dog finds a home where they will be treated as well as they treat the family living there. We teach them to be more open and receptive to people, that not everyone is bad, and most people really do like dogs. We teach them to open up to the world when we walk, to sniff and scratch, to not be afraid of life beyond the kennel bars. We teach them that walking feels good, that chasing ducks is bad behavior and that they will be rewarded for behaving. We adapt them to the alien sounds they will experience, to not jump or get frightened of trucks, motorcycles or skateboards. Sometimes, we have to start even further back than that, and simply teach these dogs how to be dogs again. We do our best to socialize and civilize, to make them the best dog they can be in the short period of time we have together, because usually the vast improvement leads to them getting adopted! If you ever catch us asking you if you’d like a dog, it’s because we know that dog is ready to love a family, and to have a family love him. He, or she, is ready to snuggle, to bark, to play, to protect and most of all, to enjoy the company of others. These dogs know how to have fun but are respectful, and we take the time to ensure that the home they will go to is a good fit for them. It’s unfortunate that nothing in life is free, even the care of animals like these dogs. Our immediate community came out in force to support us and these animals through their times of need. We have massive car washes, garage sales that sell (cont. on page 11)

Movies (cont. from page 12)
May, a traditionally packed movie month, is looking pretty slim this year. I chalk this up to a handful of reasons: One of them is big, green and angry; another dons an armored suit; and the last wears a red, white and blue costume with a matching shield. About a decade’s worth of super hero movies finally converge this month with Marvel’s latest comic book infused action romp, The Avengers. Fans of these films know that, if you stuck around after the credits to Iron Man, Captain America and The Hulk,

It’s basically all of your favorite summer action blockbusters rolled into one super-film, and likely the main reason little else is bothering to hit the silver screen this May. Super hero films usually hog all of the audiences and, when one movie is packed with some of the biggest names in the genre, you’d have to be crazy to want to go toe-to-toe with this juggernaut at the box office. It’s good, then, that The Avengers actually looks like a blast-a-minute entertainment rollercoaster, thus earning my pick for the month.

In just a few hours, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to give you years of musical enjoyment. How do we do it? While regular piano teachers teach note reading, piano professionals use chords. And you can learn all the chords you’ll need to play any song in this one session. Any song. Any style. Any key. If you can find middle C and know the meaning of Every Good Boy Does Fine, you already know enough to enroll in this workshop.
