Monday, April 6th tion, and connections occur within committed work plans and schedules. Any surprises could have a detrimental impact on dependent activities or other resources during the installation or maintenance processes, causing major delays, budget overruns and lost revenue. Enterprise resource planning and project management software has gone a long way in addressing these problems, but cannot predict real-world surprises that may occur when a project actually begins. In this presentation, BCP Engineers will discuss the benefits Xcel Energy gained at the Monticello Nuclear Plant and the benefits Entergy gained at the Waterford 3 Nuclear Plant by using digital planning and simulation solutions. Using 3D technology from Dassault Systemes, in conjunction with BCP Engineers & Consultants, XCEL built a virtual model of Monticello’s General Electric Zinc Injection Process (GEZIP) mechanical system-installation project. The model was then used to simulate the project and therefore optimize the scheduling, planning, and installation processes before any plans were finalized and before any physical work began. As a result, Monticello witnessed a reduced outage time and improved schedule adherence. Similarly, engineers at the Entergy Corporation-owned Waterford 3 nuclear power plant are using knowledge-based 3D models of rooms and equipment to create lifelike hazard simulations of critical areas of the plant to create fire preparedness programs. Through these projects, virtual simulation has proven its practicality and effectiveness for the commercial nuclear industry, and has proven its potential to support a variety of other projects at nuclear plants in the future. This presentation will address the lessons learned through the Monticello and Waterford 3 projects and will look ahead to other potential applications

entley is actively implementing ISO 15926 at the core of its Interoperability Architecture. This allows interoperability not just among various Bentley applications but also with third parties in a consistent way. To fully realize and leverage the advantages of the common ISO 15926 ontology beyond the interoperability requirements, it needs to be a fundamental part of the software application. Bentley’s OpenPlant set of products is open software designed for the distributed world and uses ISO15926 reference data natively within the products. It provides complete, consistent and correct data throughout the plant lifecycle. This session will provide an overview of the OpenPlant architecture and how OpenPlant Schema is built using ISO 15926 Dictionaries created through a live connection to the RDS/WIP. The session will provide insight into various OpenPlant products and ProjectWise LifeCycle Server highlighting the consistent use of OpenPlant Schema for data exchange and integration.

here are many real-world settings that are typically not accessible for learning purposes such as a structure under construction, a plant closed for production, or the delicate environment within a nuclear power plant. Although challenging, proper training in these scenarios are essential to guarantee an efficient and safe work environment. Électricité de France (EDF) is one of the world’s largest producers of electricity with an R&D laboratory of more than 2,600 researchers and technicians that are internationally renowned for their skills in electrical engineering, material studies, mechanics, heat-energy and hydraulic power. Attendees of this presentation will hear from EDF’s R&D organization and learn about its use of virtual reality to produce a workshop which trains technicians to operate polar cranes, devices used for handling heavy loads in nuclear power plants. To put it in Vegas terms, this is nothing like simulating a game of video poker; it would be like simulating the entire casino. It requires the creation of a hyper-realistic environment that reproduces the complexity of the infrastructure and operations performed there. This includes a means for users to maneuver a polar crane with all its behaviors (rotations, tuning, etc.), and manage all operating schemas and their functional effects. Learn how EDF created an interactive 3D environment using 3D CAD models of its Gravelines power plant to provide a truly immersive experience, including use of virtual reality displays, impressive rendering and rich interactivity.

10:15-10:45am Maximizing Value from the Structural Supply Chain Vic O’Mara, West Coast Technical Sales Manager, AceCad Software Inc Moderated by Adrian Laud, Managing Director, Noumenon Consulting Ltd
I
n today’s tough economic climate, cost efficiencies are continually being sought throughout the process and power supply chain. In the structural supply chain – from design through fabrication and into construction, companies strive to retain competitive advantage. Traditional structural workflows between engineering, detailers, fabricators and construction are invariably fragmented, with models and data being re-entered/re-modelled, between plant design, analysis and detailing systems – often many times through the design process. As a result, error and a loss of accuracy reflect in estimation inaccuracies, production and construction planning - causing avoidable and costly rework. FIM (Fabrication Information Management) therefore is very applicable as a business strategy methodology that harnesses the structural supply chain and workflows between engineering, fabricators and construction companies. As Project Managers look to compress the structural schedules, fabricators look for accurate procurement with minimal material wastage and efficient fabrication that delivers to the construction site – on time and on budget.
10:50-11:20am Field BIM: Tracking Steel and Precast from the Model to the Field and Back Ebriama Jagana, Senior BIM Manager, Standard Supplies; Josh Kanner, Founder, Vela Systems Moderated by Adrian Laud, Managing Director, Noumenon Consulting Ltd
T
he ENR cover story of April 2008 featured a new construction operations solution, integrating mobile field software with “BIM” or building information modeling for tracking of precast concrete. Now steel fabricators like Standard Supplies are using the same concept to track steel from fabrication, through delivery and erection, with significant benefits to all parties. The content of this interactive FIATECH session is twofold: 1) the Standard Supplies model manager will present their implementation of a Field BIM solution with Vela Systems for tracking steel from their Tekla model through the production and supply chain process and 2) Vela Systems will present the results of white paper and survey conducted of the Field BIM working group. Vela Systems has partnered with leading BIM vendors Autodesk, Tekla and VICO to facilitate the Field BIM working group, a voluntary collection of customers, partners and advisors interested in exploring how field information can be combined with BIM to enable new efficiencies in construction delivery. The results of the Field BIM working group survey of over 60 BIM will be presented for discussion at FIATECH.
11:25-12:15pm Project and Portfolio Management and BIM for the Plan, Build, Operate Phases of a Facility’s Lifecycle Jordan Brandt, Partner, Horizontal LLC; Marc Krichman, Director, ISV Business Development/Industry Marketing, Meridian Systems Moderated by Steve Makredes, Director, Construction, Target Corporation
D
esigning buildings and facilities using data rich Building Information Modeling (BIM) is taking hold in the marketplace. Over the years, the discipline of construction project management has evolved as well, to go beyond helping organizations manage only the “build” phase of projects, to broader use managing complete project lifecycles. This evolution led to the introduction of Infrastructure Lifecycle Management (ILM) software to optimize the plan, build, and operate phases of real estate and facility assets. 3D models can be a key building component present throughout an entire project lifecycle. For any building project, BIM provides a complete lifecycle perspective of design data, while ILM provides a complete lifecycle of operational business data. Used in conjunction, BIM and ILM create many integration touch points that lead to even greater business value. Ultimately, the value of integrating to each touch point will vary depending on a company’s specific role. his presentation will explore several integration scenarios including: • Plan phase examples for design to budget development integration and bill of materials integrated with buyout items. • Build phase scenarios including 4D schedule integration. • Field management including BIM enabled RFI’s.

Intergraph Enhanced API Mechanical Equipment Datasheets Bryan K. Layton, Senior Manager-Technical, Intergraph Moderated by Frank Matthewson, CET Engineering Manager, Bechtel
T
he vast majority of information exchanged between project partners and participants is via the humble datasheet. These sheets carry important technical requirements, availability specifications, acquisition details, maintenance procedures, safety check lists, spare parts and consumables… in fact everything you ever wanted to know about an item of equipment. Seems important doesn’t it? But, on the average plant, only 20% of these datasheets are available at any one time, and of these, only 50% of the information on them is accurate, hardly surprising when today that this information is largely only interpretable by human beings. To safeguard the content for long term availability, to share data between project participants, to exchange data between systems (to avoid re-keying and errors) the content needs to be computer readable. This means in a standardized form. This presentation will cover some work Intergraph has been doing with API to enhance their current datasheets, make them available in a data form, and use this as a basis for standardized content for the industry.

T
he deployment of international standards like ISO 15926, ISO/TS 16952-1:2006, ISO/IEC 82045 and IEC 61355 to manage engineering and asset information as unstructured and structured data has become one of the critical success factors for the Malaysian oil & gas industry to develop Malaysia as the premier engineering service and deepwater hub in Asia. Areas to be covered include: • PCIM strategy to improve business processes and to reduce cost of poor information quality. • Malaysian Oil & Gas industry effort in aligning data integration within the services sector, and to develop common Information Management Guidelines based on Standards. • Proof of concept workflow to load data in ISO15926-compliant formats from PCIM/ALCIM IQM into NRX Asset Center synchronized with SAP®EAM environments. • Challenges in Harmonizing and Standardizing Reference Data Systems and Reference Designation System • Why implementation of International Standards for Unstructured Data Management are as important as standards for Unstructured and Structured Data Integration and Interoperability • How AVEVA is supporting PCIM initiative to increase data interoperability.

sing Industry Standards and 3D Gaming Technology in Asset Life Cycle Management & Beyond - This presentation will focus on how the combination of ISO standards for data exchange and 3D gaming technology can bring real business benefits to managing assets in complex industrial installations. The key to exploiting this combination is having intuitive user interfaces that simplify, enable and improve asset-related business processes. The complexity of these installations together with their inherent nature makes them ideal for 3D visualization. However, in order maximize the benefits; the visualization must be combined with easy access asset-related information and intelligent data-interpretation. The main benefit here is access and dissemination of (typically) large quantities of business critical, yet complex asset information. The source of this information is often large CAD models which must be presented in a way that is easy to understand. The presentation will demonstrate how Octaga’s visualization products and simulations utilize X3D, domain-specific ISO standards and modern gaming technology to deliver real value.

his work describes a demonstration project to create a simulation “plug and play” information technology framework that can be customized to foster scenario-specific virtual learning environments. The framework supports several modes of learning: Supervised, unsupervised, situational learning and game-based learning modes involving roles for both individual and team play. The framework is made up of “knowledge” and “learning” engines. The “knowledge engine” can be adapted for specific domains using first-order logic, extended temporal and other resource structures. Activities and constraints are generated automatically by the knowledge engine to promote optimal learning by participants. Each module can be adapted to incorporate a unique interface leading participants through sequenced learning scenarios. Critical to the success of the effort is development and participation of industry populated content and case studies involving actual project work flow.

his session is an update on the simulation-based learning modules for construction engineering education underway at the University of Nebraska in the Peter Kiewit Institute. The modules will simulate construction process decisions relating to construction of a facility from start to finish. Players will attempt to earn status by maximizing profits in an optimal time on real projects drawn from the built environment. These modules will be used as teaching tools in courses such as estimating, scheduling, methods and equipment in construction curricula. This type of training could be extended to industry applications for internal training and would be especially helpful in repetitive construction.
11:25-12:15pm The Transformation Roadmap to Smart Process Manufacturing Dr. Jim Davis, Associate Vice Chancellor Information Technology and Professor Chemical Engineering, UCLA Moderated by Steve Makredes, Director Construction, Target Corporation
S
mart process manufacturing (SPM) refers to a design and operational paradigm involving the integration of measurement and actuation; environment, safety, and health (ES&H) protection; regulatory control; real-time optimization and monitoring; and planning and scheduling. It is motivated by generally increasing dynamic demands on manufacturing for economic viability, minimizing environmental impacts and better management of risk and uncertainty. SPM is an integrated approach that provides for a much stronger predictive mode of operation for greater robustness to risk and changing situations, greater flexibility and responsiveness to overall goals, and a much swifter incident-response capability. It is the enterprise-wide application of “smart” models and cyber infrastructure technologies, tools, and systems coupled with knowledge-enabled personnel to plan, design, build, operate, maintain, and manage process manufacturing facilities in full concert with the business and manufacturing missions of the enterprise. This presentation reports on a national technology and business transformation roadmap developed by the NSF-funded SPM Engineering Virtual Organization (EVO). The SPM EVO, which includes FIATECH, is an industry-academic community specifically focused on SPM technologies, approaches, workforce requirements and transformation. The roadmap provides technical and operational direction for the chemical processing industry, and for the corporations, universities and consortia that endorse the concepts to move from today’s operations to a future desired state. Technical and operational change directions are laid out as set of consensus developed priority pathways, or lanes, that lead to a realization of the SPM vision.

Reducing the Risk of the Engineering Systems Integration Gamble Scott Warnke, Global Applications Manager, Environmental Control Systems, Alstom Power Moderated by Julian Bourne, Product Manager and Research Analyst, NRX Global
I
ntegration is a multidimensional topic with different stakeholders in multiple countries so from an application point of view the basis has to be a comprehensive information model for modeling plants. This is more evident during the engineering phase of complex systems such as industrial plants, where dispersed partial solutions of engineering disciplines might otherwise create data mayhem to prevent successful consolidation of the final customer deliverable without a coherent strategy to minimize the risk. Clearly the adoption of powerful commercially available engineering tools is a key step toward improvement, although in most cases these engineering tools have a specific functionality and information model. The intent of this paper is to reveal the lessons learned from identifying the gaps of integration and the challenges of implementation across the globe within the Alstom organization and the potential benefits of ISO 15926.

Management of Change (MOC) Best Practices Dr. Rainer Hoff, President, and Senior Principal Consultant, Gateway Consulting Group; Hugh Ritchie, Industry Manager, Open Text Moderated by Steve Makredes, Director, Construction, Target Corporation
P
rocess Safety Management is crucial because its purpose is to prevent or minimize the consequences of catastrophic releases of toxic, reactive, flammable or explosive chemicals. Facilities that utilize potentially hazardous material and/or processes are required by law to maintain a formal Management of Change (MOC) process. In most plants MOC has proven to be a costly and inefficient process. Over the last five years Dr. Rainer Hoff has analyzed MOC business processes at twelve major refineries and chemical plants in North America. Utilizing real MOC data and process simulation models, Dr. Hoff has been able to isolate where process inefficiencies typically occur and develop MOC Best Practices to circumvent them. This presentation is a synopsis of a 2-day MOC Best Practices seminar presented regularly by Dr. Hoff. Attendees will take away a set of action items that will be immediately applicable to improving their MOC process.

e will provide the audience with the story and an online demo of how and why S&B utilizes fully integrated systems to manage and flow the information from engineering to procurement, then planning to ensure the craftsman in the field has everything they need to be productive. It is integration, flow, and sharing of information between systems that is the critical key to ensure that we manage with certainty. Using the Intelligent 3D Model our Craft Planners are able to prepare Craft work packages with certainty of budgeted hours, materials on hand, tools, and required equipment are in place to support the craft crew in the field. We can monitor productivity against the plan on a daily basis and make needed corrections on the fly. It has taken 24 years to grow a system that will capture work as it is performed and feed it forward for downstream users and work processes. The S&B iPIMS platform has come very close to achieving the FIATECH ROADMAP of the highly integrated organization. Some of the highlights: • Single Entry Multiple Use – or Enter Once – Used by Many • Systems Designed and honed by USERS and for USERS – bottom up design - Top down empowerment • All systems must perform work • Dynamic Asset Linking • Control List Base and Change Management • Transaction Based/Fit for Use Data/Document Distribution and posting • Field Planner Tool Sets including Trial Allocation for Materials and Equipment

n the twelve months since software vendors, OOs and EPCs met in a workshop in Houston and agreed what was required for interoperability, a great deal has been accomplished. There has been collaboration between competing vendors and close involvement of OOs and EPCs. Three projects were focussed on short term deliverables to satisfy immediate business needs whereas another was focussed on the core technology to enable the full power of ISO 15926 to be realised. This presentation concerns the short term deliverables, the first stepping stone for using ISO 15926 for business benefit. It discusses the journey from the Houston workshop to the implementation and deployment of commercial software by the vendors involved – the software being demonstrated in the IDS-ADI Intelligent 2D, 3D and P&ID Exchange booth. Deriving business benefit and familiarity from this first stage will no doubt drive the demand for the greater benefits possible with the deployment of the following stages of ISO 15926.

n the construction project, duration, cost, and the productivity affect to the success of the construction project, and the success or failure is especially up to pre-design stage during whole life-cycle. So the system which supports the decision making of participants in the pre-design stage is required to systematize the process. This research is about developing the decision making support system (decision making supporting is derived from simulation) at pre-design stage. To developing the system, existing papers and systems which deal with the predesign process are analyzed. Based on this analysis, requisite modules are derived, and finally prototype system is developed. This system is expected to be used as a decision making support system, and also this research will be used as the resource for the other researches about BIM (Building Information Modeling).

ntelligent Plant Life Cycle Management refers to the process of managing the data and information about a generation facility throughout its lifetime, from initial design through to decommissioning. This presentation will look at results from the application of this process in other industries (e.g., shipbuilding) and show how those results are directly applicable to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of complex power generation facilities, specifically nuclear and clean coal plants. Plant (or product in the manufacturing industries) Lifecycle Management is often thought of narrowly as referring to the 3D software that is used to design the plant or product. iPLM refers to a much broader, more comprehensive view of the term, to consider all of the factors that “touch” the plant data or information during the life of a generation asset, including creation, analysis, visualization, transfer and reporting. With this enhanced definition, iPLM not only incorporates the 3-D design applications, but also includes portfolio / fleet strategy and management, collaboration platforms and methodologies, Plant Data Management systems, electronic content / document / records, management, supply chain, project management and controls. iPLM can unlock substantial business value through shortening plant development times, efficiently finding, reusing, and changing plant data and enabling an integrated and transparent collaborative environment in which to manage business processes.

ARVISCOPE
V
isualization of simulated operations has traditionally been achieved in Virtual Reality (VR). In order to create convincing VR animations, detailed information about an operation and the environment has to be obtained. The data must describe the simulated processes, and provide 3D CAD models of project resources, the facility under construction, and the surrounding terrain (Model Engineering). As the size and complexity of an operation increase, such data collection becomes an arduous, impractical, and often impossible task. This directly translates into loss of financial and human resources that could otherwise be productively used. In an effort to remedy this situation, an alternate approach of visualizing simulated operations was proposed in this research in which Augmented Reality (AR) is used to create mixed views of real existing jobsite facilities and virtual CAD models of construction resources. The application of AR in animating simulated operations has significant potential in reducing the aforementioned Model Engineering and data collection tasks, and at the same time can help in creating visually convincing output that can be effectively communicated. The designed AR‐based visualization tool is equipped with ARVISCOPE, a general purpose AR animation authoring language, and ROVER, a mobile computing hardware framework. When used together, ARVISCOPE and ROVER can create 3D AR animations of any length and complexity from the results of running simulation models of engineering operations (e.g. construction, manufacturing, aviation, etc.). ARVISCOPE takes advantage of advanced Global Positioning System (GPS) and orientation tracking technologies to accurately track a user’s spatial context, and georeferences superimposed 3D graphics in an augmented environment. In achieving the research objectives, major technical challenges such as accurate registration, automated occlusion handling, and dynamic scene construction and manipulation were successfully identified and addressed.
