Was born in Millwood, New York, to Helen and Milton Williams, both of whom were music teachers and had a great appreciation for the arts. Vanessa spent her youth dancing and singing on stage. This is where she discovered her love for musical theatre and showcased these talents in school productions at a very young age. By the time she graduated high school, she knew it was not if, but when, she would be on stage. She signed her yearbook, “See you on Broadway.” During the year of 1984, Vanessa began entering beauty contests and she eventually won, Miss New York. Eventually this led her to the stage of Miss America. By winning Miss America, her career was given a boost, as she became the first African-American Miss America. That was an important event for so many. Her reign opened doors and it later became a hurdle for her to overcome, which she did with strength and grace. Many believed that this hurdle would end her career in show business, however they clearly didn’t understand Vanessa’s drive, focus and ultimately that her whole life had prepared her for show business. While this hurdle could have been a stop sign for many, Vanessa Williams is clearly not like everybody! Vanessa is a woman who has been empowered by life’s journey and her strength and her focus are infectious. Interviewing Vanessa was a moment of empowerment, and I am sure she didn’t even realize that her worlds were making such an impact. Q: Tell us about your new show - What is it about and what makes it exciting for you as an artist. A: Daytime Divas, which airs June 5tth for VH1 is an exciting new one-hour dramedy, based off of Star Jones 2011 novel, Satan’s
Sisters. This complex and layered series has already been picked up for 10 episodes, which alone is reason to celebrate! This creation brings a peppering of Star Jones interviews, co-host craziness, and prosecutorial tales to life with an amazing ensemble cast and myself playing the character Maxine. This show is something that I am excited by and I chose to take a chance with a non-traditional channel, since everyone’s viewing habits are different these days. I have four kids and none of them watch T.V. the way I did. It seems that everyone is watching T.V. in variety ways, so why not take a chance?
Q: When does the show launch and on what channel? A: June 5th h on VH1 Q: What was the first step into your art format? A: Growing up with a mother and father, who both had an appreciation for the arts, helped a lot. I was initially bit by the acting bug
in 4th grade, when I performed in the play, the Trojan Horse at West Orchard Elementary. It was my first taste of musical theatre and I did everything. I sang, danced, acted and we made our own costumes. My theatrical teacher, Mr. Hart, even asked me if I was up to choreographing a dance for the show, which of course, I was and I did. I remember feeling completely alive when I was on that stage.
Q: What fears did you have to defeat to get to where you are now? A: I have always been a bit fearless and always viewed my dreams as a real possibility. I would see shows on Broadway; take classes
and train, train, train. My dreams were always viable to me. I really took any fear that I may have had and turned it into motivation. I would take fear and others taunting, that it couldn’t be done and prove them wrong. I was always a bit fearless but I also had the wisdom and support to know that ultimately, it came down to training and honing my skills.
Q: What wisdom can you give to beginners? A: The most important wisdom is for people with goals to do what I do, they need to study and train. Why do you think so many of
the working and relevant actors come out of Australia and England? They train for many years! Many of them attend NIDA and they interact and they know each other. If someone has a dream to be an actor, research your favorite actors and where they studied, who their mentors are and were, what path they took. Remember, all of us have our own bits that make us special, so by researching and training like someone we look up to, we will be influenced by them but we will find our own path.
Q: How has your practice changed over time? A: Obviously, I don’t have the time to train and to take classes like I used to but I do work consistently which allows for repetition.
Repetition allows for a natural honing of a skillset. I work with great ensembles that are incredibly talented and I often work on Broadway. Working on a Broadway run, allows me to fine tune my character during the process of the show opening, to the final curtain call.

Q: What art do you most identify and enjoy most? A: Well, that would lead me back to 4tth grade and where it all started. Musical theatre is where I am most comfortable and feel most alive. I love musical theatre because it encompasses all of my disciplines. I am able to create a character while using song, dance and acting, all the while working with an amazing ensemble and having the feedback and energy from a live audience.
Q: Describe a real-life situation that inspired you? A: I recently worked with Cicely Tyson in Los Angeles on a play called, “Bountiful”. As women, we are told that we have a window of time that our career will have relevance. Cicely is inspiring just by watching her prepare her voice, show up everyday and by working next to her in theatre. She has been a vegetarian since 1967 and doesn’t touch Western Medical practices at all. Working with such a strong woman who is working well into her 90s was pure joy. Cicely is wise, connected, elegant, strong, and such a powerhouse. I recently worked with Chita Rivera, age 84 and Barbara Cook, age 89 and it is empowering to watch these women move in their careers, beyond what they were told was possible. They are using their craft to move people with their art. Women like Cicely, Chita and Barbara, show us that the boundaries that we are told exist, don’t have to limit us. These are women who we look at and realize, I can have a career well into my 80s and 90s. I can be an influence and move people beyond what we think our creative years might be.
Q: As you were gaining success, how did you deal with others jealousy or negativity energy? A: You learn those skills particularly in middle school. The cliques and jealousy start in middle school and then we find out that life is just like high school. It doesn’t really change and you still have the same cliques, or people trying to stab you in the back or get ahead. We have to learn how to navigate that at an early age and I think that many that learn to navigate successfully have a genetic component that helps. Coming from strong stock like I did, and having a powerhouse of a mother who remained strong in any situation, was helpful. You learn to ask your loved ones and people you respect how to navigate difficult situations. Often, you just have to take a moment and consider, what could be the worst to happen, if I did or didn’t respond. Typically, things work out and things aren’t tragic and you succeed just by learning to solve a problem. These moments teach you to dig deep and to move ahead. No matter what it is, your career or your personal life, it’s also about knowing your worth! Once the dust settles, you will get a chance to be who you are vs. what assumptions people make, or what others project on you. It just requires patience and patience can be hard.
Q: Should art be funded so all can be included? A: Yes! It’s an absolute necessity for everybody. I have been involved with many private organizations that offer arts programs and
we raised money because it is important. The arts are part of the human experience and whether it is dance or singing, or another art format, it is important that all are able to experience it. Art enriches everyone’s life and it will speak to every person in some aspect.
Q: Have you ever considered your legacy and if you have, what legacy do you hope to leave behind? A: As a mother, I think it’s inevitable to not think about our legacy and wonder, what will I be leaving behind? Many people see me as a survivor, but that isn’t necessarily how I view myself. I view myself as a woman who has persevered. My legacy will be of a woman who persevered, never stopped and always believed in myself.
In closing, I have no doubt that Vanessa will leave the legacy she mentions above. I also believe that if she impacted me in such a short time, that she will definitely leave a legacy of empowerment behind as well.
