KARINE BRUNEEL Mood Maker Issue d'une famille française de négociants en tissus basée à Lyon, Karine dirige d’abord à Paris la société Bisson Bruneel, éditeur de textiles contemporains d’ameublement. (www.bisson-bruneel.com) En 1999, elle décide de s'installer à St Barth et crée un bureau d'architecture intérieure pour les Villas, les Hôtels et les Restaurants. Un service pour concevoir et implanter des projets de décoration adaptés au style de vie et à l'architecture contemporaine de St Barth. Une synergie se crée avec l'architecte ou le client lui-même. En plus du procédé créatif, Karine dirige planification et gestion financière du projet, incluant la logistique des achats, la préparation du transport, et la coordination entre son enseigne et les artisans locaux.
Coming from French textiles traders family based in Lyon, famous for its weaving knowledge, Karine manages in Paris the company Bisson Bruneel (www.bisson-bruneel.com), creator of contemporary home textiles. In 1999, she decided to move over St Barth to create an architecture and interior design office for Villas, Hotels & Restaurants. Design projects adapted to the lifestyle and contemporary architecture of Saint Barth. Synergy with either the architect or with the owner, in addition to the creative process, Karine supports the organization planning and financial management of the projects which includes purchasing logistic, transport planning, and coordination with local craftmen. Her 20 years career forged an ability to deliver projects on time and within budget without compromising on style or creation.

Tom Dixon Enfant terrible du design anglais, récompensé par le titre de ‘’Designer of the Year’’ en 2006, puis directeur artistique chez Habitat. Il crée en 2002 sa propre firme pour produire ses collections de luminaires et mobilier. Considéré comme une véritable référence dans l'univers des designers britanniques, il est aujourd'hui exposé dans les musées du monde entier. Enfant terrible of English design, Tom Dixon was named “Designer of the Year” in 2006, and served as creative director at Habitat through 2008. In 2002, he had already launched his own firm for the design of innovative lighting and furniture. Considered a major reference in the world of British design, his work is included in the collections of major museums around the world.
Tricia Guild Diplômée de la Royal College of Art, Winchester School of Art et Loughborough University, elle crée en 1970 son entreprise: Designers Guild. Sa contribution passionnée au monde du design lui a valu plusieurs distinctions : membre honoraire du Royal College of Art, et reçu le prix international Elle Décoration pour le design de tissus, et puis le prix Elle Décor US pour le plus beau revêtement mural... Aujourd’hui, l’entreprise de Tricia Guild exporte ses créations dans le monde entier. Graduate of the Royal College of Art, Winchester School of Art, and Loughborough University, Tricia Guild created her own enterprise in 1970: Designers Guild. Her outstanding contribution to the world of design has won her several distinctions: honorary member of the Royal College of Art, the Elle Decoration international prize for fabric design, and the Elle Décor US prize for the most beautiful wall covering…Today, Tricia Guild’s company exports its designs around the world.
Lucie Koldova Née en République tchèque . Après avoir été diplômée de l'Académie des Arts , Architecture et Design de Prague en 2009. Elle conçoit des meubles et des luminaires. Lucie a créé son propre studio à Paris en 2012 . Lucie is a lighting and furniture designer born in the Czech Republic. After graduating at Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in 2009. She designs as a furniture and light designer. Lucie established her own studio in Paris in 2012.
Matthew Hilton A crée sa propre agence de Design en 2007 pour prendre le contrôle de la conception, la fabrication et la commercialisation de mobilier sous son propre nom . Sentant que la relation classique entre le concepteur, fabricant et le détaillant subissait des changements importants, en partie provoqués par l'Internet et l'évolution de la communication globale rapide avec le commerce . Le moment était venu pour lui de prendre la main sur une partie importante du processus de fabrication de mobilier. He started with his Design agency in 2007 to gain control of the design, manufacturing and marketing of furniture under his own name. feeling that the conventional relationship between designer, manufacturer and retailer was undergoing significant changes, partly brought on by the shifts caused by the internet and developments in fast global communication and trade. The time was right for him to step up and take hold of a more significant part of the process of putting furniture out into the world.
Michelede Lucchi & Giancarlo Fassina Tout deux architectes et designers italien, ils ont collaboré pour créer les nombreuses déclinaisons de la gamme Toloméo pour la marque Artemide, spécialisée dans l'éclairage haut de gamme, pour lesquelles ils ont reçu le Compasso d'Oro prix pour le design industriel italien en 1989. Italian architects and designers, Michele de Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina collaborated to created various versions of the Tolomeo lamp for Artemide, a company that specialized in high-quality lighting. In 1989, the designers won the Compasso d'Oro award for Italian industrial design for the Tolomeo lamp.
Ole Wanscher Fils d'historien d’art, il se passionne pour l'histoire du mobilier et publie ses nombreuses recherches. Ses créations s'inspirent du mobilier anglais du XVIIIe et des antécédents chinois, égyptiens et grecs. En 1955, Wanscher succède à Klint comme professeur de design du meuble. En 1960, en raison de la grande qualité de manufacture de ses meubles, il reçoit une médaillle d'or à la Triennale de Milan et le Grand Prix de l'exposition annuelle des ébénistes de Copenhague. Son of a Danish art historian, Ole Wanscher developed a passion for the history of furniture and published his extensive research in the field. English furniture of the 18th century and its Chinese, Egyptian, and Greek antecedents inspired his work as a furniture designer. In 1955, Wanscher followed in Kaare Klint’s footsteps as professor of furniture design at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1960, thanks to the high quality of his furniture, he received the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale and the Grand Prize at the annual exhibition of cabinetmakers in Copenhagen.
Andreas Lund & Jacob Rudbek Jacob Rudbeck a étudié à l’Ecole d'Architecture de l'Académie royale Danoise des Beaux-Arts, et Andreas Lund est sorti de l’Ecole de Design Danoise en 2000. Ils se sont rencontrés alors qu’ils enseignaient. Ensemble ils ont crée cette suspension Bell. Dont la forme rappelle une cloche, de forme simple et conique, Malgré son design minimaliste, c’est une lampe dont les détails sont mis en valeur. Prouvant que les formes les plus familières peuvent être réinterprétées pour créer un nouveau luminaire d’intérieur. Jacob Rudbeck has a background from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architect and Andreas Lund has a background from The Danish Design School in 2000. They met during teaching jobs and decided to start a cooperation for create the Bell lamp. It is a successful piece resembling an iconic bell within it’s shape. With a simple and conic form, despite its minimalistic design, it is a lamp where the details have been in focus.The proof that the most familiar forms can be reinterpreted into fresh interior fixture.

In 2011, his design of the Plumen 001 light bulb won the London Design Museum “Design of the Year" and “Product Of The Year,” as well as the highly coveted "Black pencil" from the D&AD. His studio works diversifies across various disciplines from consumer products to interiors to public realm.
Morten Gloater Designer danois, né en 1944, contemporain renommé doté d'une grande sensibilité pour le travail du bois. Ses créations sont caractérisées par leur simplicité et leur apparence légère. Son style puise ses racines dans la tradition du design scandinave. En 1997, il dessina la célèbre chaise pliante Cuba, avec son assise très confortable, en coton. Born in 1944,he is a renowned Danish furniture designer MDD, with a true feeling for wood. His style has its roots in modern Scandinavian design tradition with a focus on a simple and light look. His designs are characterized by their simplicity and light appearance. His products are characterized by such keywords as close attention to detail, quality materials and exquisite comfort. In 1997, he designed the famous folding Cuba Chair with its comfortable woven cotton seat.
Patricia Urquiola Espagnole, elle vit actuellement et travaille à Milan. A reçu plusieurs prix parmi lesquels l’International Design Yearbook, IMM Cologne, Good Design Awards of the Chicago Athenaeum, Red Dot Award, Elle Decoration International Awards. Ses produits sont présents dans les collections permanentes de plusieurs musées, au MoMA à New York et à la Triennale à Milan, entre autres. A Spanish designer, Patricia Urquiola currently lives and works in Milan. She was won numerous awards from such sources as the International Design Yearbook, IMM Cologne, the Good Design Award of the Chicago Athenaeum, the Red Dot Award, and Elle Decoration International Award. Her designs are found in the permanent collections at leading museums including MoMA in New York and the Milan Triennale among others.

Soucieuse de conserver l'authenticité et l'âme des lieux, Karine Bruneel a choisi pour la rénovation intérieure de cette villa construite dans les années 70, de ni du passé faire table rase, et encore moins de s’inscrire dans la reconstitution. L’idée : retrouver l’esprit maison de famille, ou le confort et la convivialité en sont les maîtres mots. Intent on preserving the authenticity and soul of the original design at this villa built in the early 70s, Karine Bruneel opted not to erase the past, yet to go beyond a simple reconstruction when renovating the interiors. Her idea was to recreate the spirit of this family home, where comfort and conviviality are the main emphasis.
Conserver l’aspect authentique de la charpente mais le rehausser par des luminaires contemporains. Un minimalisme revendiqué qui se déploie dans une approche très sensorielle entre sérénité et lumière. The authentic aspects of the ceiling were conserved but enhanced with contemporary lighting. This sense of minimalism is reinforced in a sensual approach that juxtaposes serenity and light.
Conçue en open space, la pièce à vivre dont les dimensions hors normes de ses volumes ont permis de définir des espaces de vie pour chaque moment. Entre partage et intimité, cet agencement dessine un lieu chaleureux que l’on a plaisir à investir. Un espace hors des modes et des tendances, où les notions de service et de confort sont essentielles, pour pouvoir travailler, se restaurer, se détendre, être servi ou se servir à toute heure et en toute liberté.
With its oversized volumes, the living room is conceived as an open floor plan, which easily lends itself to be divided into different areas that can be used as desired. Whether for a group gathering or a moment of privacy, the layout creates a warm space to enjoy for hours on end. A space whose design is timeless, and not influenced by the latest trends, where notions of purpose and comfort are essential to be able to work, dine, relax, be served or serve oneself, at any time and without constraint.

u mobilier contemporain mis en scène avec subtilité. Une atmosphère à l’élégance intemporelle. Les teintes s’accordent aux vibrations de la matière... Autour d’une table basse monumentale taillée dans une racine de teck, les canapés aux lignes simplissimes sont ponctués par les graphismes ethniques des coussins répondant à cette noblesse du bois. Quelques pièces moins imposantes par la taille dégagent le même effet luxueux grâce aux finitions soignées et aux tissus nobles. Les tapis d’une profondeur voluptueuse révèlent de subtiles correspondances de matériaux de belle facture. Le daybed recouvert de velours laminé avec incrustations de nacre scintillante évoque le galuchat. La simplicité magistrale des tables basses en acier réhaussent le confort des fauteuils en cuir. Des voilages en textile innovant tamisent l’énergie extérieure pour n’en garder que le meilleur. En teintes douces et claires, une parenthèse ouatée de luxe et de raffinement.

ontemporary furniture staged with subtlety. An atmosphere of timeless elegance. The colors in tune with the vibrations of the objects... Around a monumental coffee table carved from a teak root, sofas with the purest of lines are punctuated with ethnic graphics on pillows that respond to the nobility of the wood. Several less imposing pieces in terms of size evoke the same luxurious effect thanks to refined finishing and quality fabrics. The voluptuously deep rugs reveal the subtle use of finely crafted material. The daybed covered in laminated velvet with inlaid mother of pearl evokes the look of sharkskin. The masterful simplicity of steel coffee tables accents the comfort of leather armchairs. Curtains of innovative textiles dampen exterior energy to soften the effect. With soft, clear colors, a cocoon-like parenthesis of luxury and refinement.

R E S TA U R A N T RENAISSANCE D’UN LIEU MYTHIQUE. Les nouveaux propriétaires, Paco et Julie ont demandé à Karine Bruneel de concevoir l’aménagement et la décoration du restaurant afin de rendre l’expérience d’un repas au Tamarin aussi visuelle que gustative. Un espace repensé comme un vrai lieu de vie, pas exclusivement dédié à la cuisine et aux repas, mais où il fait bon traîner, lire, passer du temps avec des amis... Le challenge était de créer un écho flatteur à ce magnifique jardin tropical rafraichi par des bassins. Pas de design contemporain, mais un mélange des styles et des matières pour lui insuffler une âme « décontractée et unique ». Des couleurs intenses, des associations insolites, toute une série de styles compose un ensemble inédit et harmonieux. Une magistrale table d’hôte en chêne accueille les familles ou amis nombreux. Les luminaires et le bar ponctuent de leur design contemporain les allées et venues. RENAISSANCE OF A LEGENDARY LOCALE Paco and Julie, the new owners of Tamarin, asked Karine Bruneel to develop the design and decoration of their restaurant, so that the experience of every meal is as visual as it is gustatory. The space was redefined as a large living area, not exclusively limited to the kitchen and dining room, but also a place to unwind, read, or spend time relaxing with friends. The challenge was to create a flattering echo of the magnificent tropical garden refreshed by pools of water. The design is not strictly contemporary, but reflects a mix of styles and materials that gives it a “unique and relaxed” soul. Intense colors and unexpected combinations create a juxtaposition of styles that compose a novel and harmonious ensemble. An oversized table d’hôte in oak is perfect for large families or groups of friends. The lighting and the bar punctuate the busy dining room with their contemporary design.

A l’ombre des palmiers et parasols, les tables extérieures en fer ont été chinées, offrant une note romantique comme un déjeuner ou un dîner sous une tonnelle en Provence. In the shade of palm trees and parasols, the exterior tables of wrought iron were found at flea markets, adding a romantic note as if enjoying lunch or dinner under an arbor in Provence.
La charpente d’origine repeinte aux couleurs d’argile dialogue avec le bois de belle facture des tables, entourées de chaises vintage bien choisies. Les grandes banquettes, les larges coussins, la lumière tamisée de la suspension sculpture de Rob Nollet composent une atmosphère décontractée et des plus feutrées pour l’espace « lounge ». The original ceiling, repainted in earth tones, connects with the beautiful wood of the tables, which are surrounded by carefully selected vintage chairs. Spacious banquettes, large cushions and light filtered by the suspension sculpture by Rob Nollet compose a relaxed, almost hushed atmosphere for the lounge area.
Ni tout à fait le même ni tout à fait un autre, Le nouveau Tamarin conjugue esthétisme et confort, intemporalité et exigence. En flânant dans cette oasis, on ressent cette nouvelle énergie palpable et le savoir faire se faufile jusque dans l’assiette. Not quite the same, not totally different, the new Tamarin combines design and comfort, timelessness and exactitude. In strolling through this oasis, one senses this palpable new energy and savoir faire that extends right into the plates.

On ne devine pas immédiatement l’entrée de ce premier bar à vin à St Barth, qui ne dévoile rien de son charme. Il faut s’avancer et découvrir cet espace intime que Sophie Donzeau a imaginé du haut de sa passion de sommelière. La bibliothèque en red cedar dessinée par French Indies Design donne le ton. Les bouteilles qui y trônent inspirent le choix et la qualité. Le comptoir tapissé de véritables carreaux de ciment anciens accentue le profil authentique du service. Les tabourets de bar légers au profil scandinave jouent la convivialité avec les tables et chaises chinées sous des luminaires résolument contemporains. Entre vins français et étrangers, le choix n’est pas moindre. Plus de cent vins composent cette cave d’exception, Sophie la connait par cœur et vous débouche un trésor en 2 temps et 3 tranches de Pata Negra pour une remontée fracassante en bouche.
It’s not immediately apparent when you enter the first wine bar in Saint Barth, as it does not reveal its charms quite so fast. In fact, you have to take a moment and look around to really absorb the allure of this intimate space created by Sophie Donzeau, as she shares her passion as a sommelier. With delightful décor designed by Karine Bruneel, in a new spirit of wining and dining, Papillon Ivre is truly innovative, a world apart from anyplace else on the island. The idea is to embrace a strong European code of design and an ambiance inherited from the bistros found in major capital cities. Then sprinkle it all with a decidedly arty touch. Red cedar bookcases designed by French Indies Design set the tone. The bottles beautifully stocked on the shelves provide a wide choice of fine wines, excellence guaranteed. A counter covered with antique cement tiles adds to the authentic feel. Scandinavian-style barstools provide a sense of conviviality, while the tables and chairs are nestled under distinctly contemporary hanging lights. Choose from an enticing mix of French and international wines. There are over 100 vintages on the wine list, which Sophie can discuss with great knowledge, as she opens a jewel of a bottle for you and serves it with a few slices of Pata Negra Iberian ham, for a surprisingly delicious taste treat.

La Chaise CH24 - ou Wishbone Chair est une des chaises les plus célèbres de Hans J. Wegner. Ses pieds arrières incurvés lui donnent une forme gracieuse et un aspect délicat, tandis que le rail semicirculaire supérieur, soutenu par le Y du dossier, apporte une touche d’élégance à la structure. Son siège spacieux et accueillant permet à l’utilisateur de facilement changer de position, pour un confort optimal. The curved back legs give this chair a graceful form and a delicate look, while the semicircular top rail supports the Y of the back and adds a touch of elegance to the structure. Un défi de réalisation … la partie du cadre en bois massif dont la courbe est obtenue par un travail à la vapeur sur le bois. Cela demande une grande maîtrise de l'ébéniste, ainsi qu'une parfaite connaissance du bois employé. Le tissage de l’assise est fait manuellement en corde de papier, matériel fiable employé pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale en remplacement de la toile de jute. This requires excellent craftsmanship on the part of the woodworker and a great understanding of the wood to be used. Pour l’ouverture de sa première boutique Laura a confié le défi à French Indies Design de métamorphoser un simple local commercial en « Boutique Ecrin », afin d’y présenter des labels de prêt à porter féminin en exclusivité à St Barth. En partant d’une page blanche, Karine Bruneel a débusqué chez Laura Insausti Ustarroz ses rêves et ses passions, pour que dans une même quête d’intimité et de contemporanéité, y relever un challenge commun.
Il s’agissait de dessiner une boutique comme tracer les contours d’une personnalité éclectique. Passionnée de mode, dotée d’un gout sur pour le design, d’un penchant pour les matières nobles et d’une sensibilité à la couleur. Le métal et le bois structurent l’espace, le mobilier capte la lumière autant que le regard, la couleur vient à l’occasion secouer l’ensemble. Variations sur la texture, effets de matières, volutes soyeuses. Dégradé subtil et féminin insufflant une sensualité autant visuelle que tactile à cette garde robe proposée. A la manière d’une robe haute couture, matériaux et composition créent un écrin unique, avec juste ce qu’il faut de Glamour.
For the opening of her first boutique, Laura entrusted French Indies Design with the challenge of transforming a simple commercial space into a “jewel-box of a boutique� to present exclusive ready-to-wear collections for women in St. Barth. Starting with a blank slate, Karine Bruneel worked with Laura Insausti Ustarroz to discover her dreams and her passions, so that in the same quest for coziness and contemporaneousness, they would share a common challenge.
The goal was to design a boutique that reflected the contours of Laura’s eclectic personality. Passionate about fashion, gifted with a strong sense of design, a penchant for noble materials, and a sensibility for color. Metal and wood provide the structure for the space, where color pulls the elements together, and the furniture captures the light as well as the eye. Variations in textures, the effect of the fabrics, a silky sensuality; a subtle, feminine ambiance infuses a sensuality that is as visual as it is tactile for this walk-in wardrobe. In the style of an haute couture dress, the blend of materials and composition create a unique setting, with just the right touch of glamour.

In the long span of her career, Gabriella Imperatori-Penn has worked for some of the most influential magazines such as American Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country, Departures, Elle Decor, O, The Oprah Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Architectural Digest and W Magazine as well as some of the most prestigious advertising clients such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Knoll, L’Oreal, Lancôme and Cartier. For the realization of French Indies Design’s second publication we asked the artist to accompany us again with her talent of light, image composition and texture realization.
Where do you come from? I was born in Zurich, Switzerland where I developed my passion for photography at the age of 15, falling in love with the amazing light and expansive landscape around my hometown. I never left the house without my camera and then went on to study photography with the acclaimed Swiss photographer Raymond Meier, my mentor, with whom I continued to expand my knowledge and craftsmanship of both photography and print making over the next 4 years. Why did you leave Switzerland? I didn't feel challenged enough in regards to my photography and wanted to see the world. I knew I needed more inspiration. So I chose to go to New York City in 1986 for 6 months. In 1988 I opened my own studio in Soho, in lower Manhattan. What started as a 6 months stay turned into 30 years in which I have enjoyed great friendships, motherhood, and an exciting career in one of the greatest cities of the world. Could you describe your inspiration? My work has been deeply influenced by my very admired Irving Penn, Sarah Moon, who takes pictures that are from another mindset, Sally Mann who I feel is so very brave and Lynn Davis who explores the world from every corner. In my work I have a natural fascination with form and texture and a strong interest in both natural and designed objects, which connects my commercial, editorial and fine art work. With my busy and thriving advertising and editorial work, I found it critical to maintain a balance and always kept my focus on the fine arts. My still life work is also strongly connected to the way
I approach the landscape, which I am exploring in a new body of fine art work, amongst them Moonscapes of St Barth (2010current). My travels both for commercial and personal reasons continually stimulate my photographic nature studies. On one of my journeys to Greece, I fell in love with the stone beaches of Chios. The water upon the stones made the most amazingly calming sounds, which were emotionally moving and inspiring. In 2009, I photographed these stones in the studio with a focus that felt like a Buddhist meditation expressing that I saw each and every stone as it’s own peaceful universe or planet. The result is the body of work called Luminous / Shadow Stones. If you weren't a photographer, what would you do? I would probably be an architect or have a restaurant/wine bar. What are your Passions? Telling stories of life's beautiful moments through my photography… The ocean and horizon lines of St Barth and it’s gorgeous light… The contrast of the natural beauty and the chic of St Barth is both exciting and inspiring… My love for Wine… Jazz… and all the beautiful, loving people that surround me in my life’s journey, both my family and friends.
Since 2012 Gabriella Imperatori-Penn divides her time between NYC’s West Village and St Barth.
