Field Studies Council (FSC) is an environmental charity which cares about people understanding and taking inspiration from the world around us. FSC was established in 1943 with a vision from its founders to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;provide opportunities to study animals and plants in their natural environment.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; 75 years later we are still doing this and have also grown and developed to include all kinds of experiences which help people to enjoy the natural world, including the creative and learning opportunities within this brochure. Our programme of day and residential experiences includes a wide variety of painting, craft and photography breaks which use the beautiful surroundings of our centres as inspiration for your art.

From stained glass inspired by birds, to fine botanical drawings or baskets woven with hedgerow materials, there are many ways the plants and animals around us influence the creativity on our holidays. We also have a section dedicated to Exploring the Natural World, which includes walking and introductions to natural history, alongside local history and geology. These breaks offer a lovely way to develop your knowledge of wildlife in some of the stunning locations around our centres. We hope you find a holiday to suit you!

Natural History Courses

Our Locations We have a fantastic network of centres across the UK, all carefully selected for their surroundings and unique wildlife often found within easy reach. Many of our centres are close to UK National Parks, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and rare flora and fauna.

Accommodation

Food and Drink

We want your stay to be as comfortable as possible. Residential centres all provide simple, sole occupancy accommodation. Some rooms are ensuite, please check at the time of booking, but if not shower and toilet facilities are close by.

Food is important at FSC, it’s something which our visitors always remember! Ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible and our kitchen teams create menus of fresh, seasonal and varied meals, catering for any dietary needs.

Centres are well equipped for courses with classroom and laboratory spaces and relevant equipment available.You can also enjoy cosy bars, comfy lounges, dining rooms and large gardens – ideal spaces to share any relaxation time with new-found friends. Our centres also have free Wi-Fi available for visitors.

There are complimentary facilities for making hot and cold drinks available at all times. Some of our Centres also have bars for evening drinks, if not you are welcome to bring a bottle to enjoy in a quiet spot.

Exploring the Natural World

This section introduces the natural world and special local places through exploring and understanding the distinctive character of the landscape and wildlife around FSC centres. It incorporates our previous Local History and Archaeology sections along with Walking and Natural History and Geology for those interested in discovering more about the natural world. Each holiday within Walking and Natural History has been given a level to indicate the amount of activity involved:

Levels

Walking 1 Up to 3 miles of gentle walking on any one day... no special preparation required providing you are used to gentle exercise. Walking 2 3 to 8 miles of brisker walking on any one day, some hill climbs possible... some regular exercise before the course is recommended, especially if you do not walk these distances regularly.

Walking 4 These courses include a range of activities which are suitable for individuals with a reasonable degree of physical fitness. Please contact the centre running the course to discuss the level of fitness required.

Over the course of the weekend, we will be tracking down some of the most iconic, often rare species and exciting habitats that can be found in Exmoor National Park. This will include High Brown Fritillary and Purple Hairstreak butterflies; Dartford Warblers; Whinchats; Nightjars; Red Deer; Exmoor Ponies and Highland Cattle; ancient oak woodland, blanket bog and species such as sundews and a variety of Exmoor’s bat population. This will be a unique opportunity to walk and explore some beautiful locations on Exmoor (whilst the heather and gorse is in flower). It provides a chance to discover the ecology, land management and diversity that the National Park has to offer.

Learn how to use a map and compass! We will learn the basics of using a map and compass before going out and navigating our way through Epping Forest.This will not provide you with all the skills to walk in the wilds of Scotland but will allow you to feel more confident to walk in lowland areas.

Designated in 1952, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is more than just a beautiful patchwork quilt of seaside landscapes, as it holds a wealth of habitats and biodiversity to explore. Taking the themes of shore, maritime and island life, we search out the birds, blooms and beasts to be found at this time of year. There will be a clear emphasis upon helping develop your identification skills and experience, but not at the expense of understanding the roles of these living things within their environment. Whether you are a seasoned natural historian or have just ‘caught the bug,’ you should find plenty to keep you enthralled. Each of the days will involve a moderate level of walking, so you should have a moderate level of fitness, but be reassured that we will for the most part stick to well-maintained paths in the beautiful South Pembrokeshire countryside.

Officially opened in 1970, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path offers some of the finest walking in Britain. At 180 miles in length, its character is a study in contrasts as you traverse clockwise towards the north. This course provides an introduction to the gentler scenery of the ‘south’ starting at Amroth. We will take in coastal towns like Tenby, explore the wilder coastline created by contrasting geology, and experience the interaction between people, land and sea that makes this our very own “land’s end”, which is after all what Pembroke or Penfro actually mean.

FSC Scotland Outreach High quality FSC courses delivered in Mainland Scotland at a variety of locations. FSC Scotland Outreach is an exciting opportunity to continue to deliver FSC Natural History Courses in the unique environments that Mainland Scotland has to offer. Started in 2019, our partnership with Glenmore Lodge has allowed us to access sites in the Cairngorms National Park where Britain’s largest, most natural habitats are home to a quarter of the UK’s rare and endangered species.

This includes Palaeozoic rock sequences from the Precambrian of St David’s to the Carboniferous of St Govans, and the classical geomorphology of the superb Pembrokeshire coast including a boat trip to the Old Red Sandstone and Carboniferous of Caldey Island.

The course will allow people to explore the World Heritage candidate site from both above and below ground. The course will involve underground exploration of a number of important slate mines and their above-ground archaeology. Enjoy the more artistic elements of the natural world and find wonderful inspiration for your painting and drawing. The holidays within this section are a great way to develop your creative skills while enjoying the stunning surroundings of our centres across the UK. Most breaks or days combine time outdoors in and around the centre with studio-based activities. Sometimes there will be a short walk or minibus ride to painting sites, other locations will be within the beautiful centre grounds. There are opportunities for all abilities and our passionate tutors will bring locations and artwork to life with their expertise. More information about required materials and equipment is available from the website or our centres. Please note painting equipment and materials are not usually covered by our fees.

Rather than performing boring exercises, the aim of the course is for students to learn by painting pictures straight away, with the emphasis on drawing, tone and colour mixing, using simple materials in a direct, uncomplicated method which preserves the freshness of watercolour.

This course is designed for those with some experience of painting in watercolour who may be somewhat frustrated with their attempts to achieve fresh and lively results. Demonstrations will include a review of the essential elements of working with pure watercolour and an introduction to line and wash techniques. Particular attention will be given to the importance of composition, simplification of a subject and creating correct tonal values. Weather permitting, we will work outdoors as much as possible.

The Gower is one of the most outstanding scenic areas of Wales, and in springtime it is at its best. This course is designed for all levels of artist who would like to develop their skills or have an opportunity to paint with watercolours in this stunning landscape.

The course is open to all levels of ability. By working with me on a practice piece, then weather permitting painting ‘en plein air’ in the surrounding landscape of FSC Amersham, you will begin to master some of the techniques of how to use this versatile medium. I look forward to helping you take up the challenge!

Improve Your Watercolours with Pen and Wash FM

This course is for anyone who would like to learn how a combination of pen work and simple watercolour washes can produce exciting, worthwhile paintings. There will be plenty of demonstrations, plus individual guidance. The aim of the demonstrations will be to show students the full potential of this medium. All the basic technical information will be covered and there will be plenty of time for practice. The basic ideas of composition, colour and tone as well as drawing will also be revisited. The course is suitable for beginners and anyone who has worked with watercolour before and would like fresh ideas and inspiration.

The course will begin with a detailed description of the various materials, papers and paints available to the watercolour painter. They will also have experience of colour mixing and the importance of using a limited palette. They will also know how to build up a painting in transparent washes, from light to dark.

‘An act of moving or change or development’ defines movement and this day-long course looks to explore ways of capturing a sense of movement as evidenced by the effects of weather and time. Working en plein air in small sketchbooks we will be following in Constable’s footsteps in search of moving subjects - water, reeds, clouds, grasses, trees, animals and people. This open-level course is designed for drawers who are looking to push their drawing on in new dynamic ways.

This programme is for anyone who would like to join an informal group of enthusiastic, likeminded outdoor painters who are comfortable working without the need of a tutor. Each day the group will be taken out together by mini bus to a different location where participants will be free to spend their time working however they wish using their own preferred medium. There is a wealth of painting potential around Flatford Mill, and excursions out may include locations such as Woodbridge, Pin Mill and Felixstowe Ferry. When the weather is prohibitive a day-time studio will be available for the exclusive use of the group. Although there will be no actual tuition throughout the day, professional artist Gerald Green will be available to provide help and guidance, if required, during the evening sessions in the studio.

Working in your own choice of media (watercolours, pastels and/or acrylics), we explore ways to improve drawing skills and capture a likeness through studying the form, features, composition and pose. After the first “warm up” day of drawing exercises we will be working from models all week. Carole is a popular tutor, favoured for her support and understanding. As well as constant individual tuition throughout, there is a group appraisal at the end of each day and a demonstration on several evenings. The aim is for each student to gain a feeling of accomplishment through increased perception and skills, while enjoying the atmosphere of this historic and inspirational setting.

This course focuses on the coastal habitat of Great Cumbrae Island off the Ayrshire mainland. John has written and illustrated two books on the UK coast, Between the Tides and Drawn to the Edge so is well qualified to lead a painting journey of exploration around the lovely coastline of Great Cumbrae. A range of habitats will be encountered and as the wildlife alters accordingly you will be encouraged to incorporate the birds and mammals observed by way of animating your landscapes and bringing a narrative to the picture-making process. We will look at composition and the tonal qualities of your painting by way of bringing a stronger dimension to your work and at drawing/seeing techniques to be able to sketch wildlife.

This jewellery-making weekend focuses entirely on Vitreous Enamelling techniques.Vitreous Enamelling is an ancient art form which works by fusing powdered glass to copper and firing at high temperatures in a kiln. Using both opaque and transparent glass you will create some beautiful and unique pieces. Toni is also going to spend some time showing you how to add texture to metal and also how to cut simple designs from copper to enamel. On the second day we will turn to the technique of cloisonné, where you will learn how to use wire to create cloisons or cells to enamel into - with the option of adding silver leaf as a base. This technique will enable you to create a picture or pattern on your copper to make beautiful decorative items or jewellery. The tutor will include some of the well known homoeopathic remedies, building a picture of each with examples of cases to make the learning fun and informative. A hands-on session is also planned, where all learners will be able to make a homoeopathic remedy to take home. A resource list for further studies will be included in the handout pack.

Covering both restoration of existing books and the creation of new bindings and books, this course is equally suitable for beginners and those with previous experience, since tuition is given according to individual needs. The course emphasises the traditional skills and techniques of hand binding and helps you develop a deeper insight into this rewarding craft, whose origins go back over 2,000 years. Cutting tools, presses and other binding equipment and materials are all available for what is one of very few residential bookbinding courses offered in the UK each year. Please expect to reimburse the tutor for the card, coverings and other materials you use, which will depend on the number of projects you undertake in the week.

Painting Drawing and the Ar ts

This practical, hands-on course is an introduction for beginners and will also welcome improvers who might appreciate the opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop their technique and creative ideas within a small group, under the supervision of an experienced tutor. Materials and methods will be introduced, and skills taught, to make and take home at least one piece of finished stained glass at the end of the weekend. Students should come prepared with an idea of what they want to make, either a drawing or a photograph of an image. The tutor can help with ideas.You will learn to use copper foil and solder, using an electric soldering iron. We will not be learning the traditional lead method. Tools and equipment are provided and a selection of glass can be bought from the tutor as required.You should be prepared for extra expenditure of around £30-£40 depending on the size of the panel. Please note that the teaching element of this course may start before dinner on the Friday.

Silver clay is magical, it contains fine silver particles embedded into a binder. This product enables you the flexibility of moulding clay and the ease of adding textures to create unique pieces of jewellery, whilst offering you the beauty of fine (hallmarkable) silver once fired, a real cheat for frustrated silversmiths. There are around £60 worth of materials included in the course fee, giving you the chance to use 10g of silver clay and silver paste to make up to three pieces of jewellery, plus the opportunity to try another silver clay product such as sheet or syringe clay to make more. Handcrafted felt is made using pre-spun wool, the fibres are fused together to create felt either by force using a needle, or friction, heat and soap for the wet felted method. Coracle: ‘A boat of skin-covered wicker’ (Pocket Oxford Dictionary). A coracle is one of the most ancient boat designs, only a few small technical steps more advanced than a raft. During this week-long course you will construct your own coracle using willows for the framework and thin canvas for the skin, and hew your own paddle if time allows.The group will be small, only four people maximum, to allow for individual tuition in the weaving and binding of the hull and gunwale of your craft. A canvas and bitumen covering provides a waterproof skin where animal skin would have been used in prehistory.This technique also has a long history and is favoured by many coracle fishermen who continue the tradition, keeping these skills alive. If all goes well, on the last day we should be on the river, not in it! Needless to say coracles take a bit of getting used to so be prepared for a dunking just in case! Planned to get the most out of Pembrokeshire’s spectacular landscape and natural history, we will visit a number of different locations shooting not only fantastic landscapes, but also plant and animal life. Prior photographic knowledge is useful to get the most out of the course, but advice and guidance are on hand. Any type of camera is suitable for this course.

Painting Drawing and the Ar ts

This course is all about creating clear, minimal images from lines and forms. Come and explore the graphic potential of the winter outlines and structures in the countryside around Dedham Vale. Learn to identify the shapes, patterns and rhythms within the landscape, how they relate to each other and how to place them within the camera frame. We will work both in colour and black and white. Most of the time will be spent out and about taking pictures and honing our eye to create stunning compositions in camera rather than relying on post image manipulation.

This weekend course will give participants all the skills and knowledge required for successful nature and landscape photography. It will look at all aspects of nature photography including close-up and landscape work.With the autumn in full flow we will be getting close to fungi, experimenting with the camera and making the most of the woodland colour at Margam Country Park. We will also be following the deer rut; be prepared, you will get dirty so please wear old clothes. Please note that the course is best suited for those with SLR cameras with a telephoto facility. Digital processing and editing, and getting the best from your images on the computer using Photoshop CS3 will be covered in the evening sessions.
