as much for dogs as it does for humans. That’s where our annual ‘Where to stay’ guide comes in. Our supplement features places to stay in the UK where dogs are not just tolerated, but positively welcomed. Within these pages you’ll find reviews of dog-friendly hotels, B&Bs, a narrowboat, and self-catering properties across Britain. Our team of reviewers have travelled from Scotland to Cornwall, Wales to East Anglia, to scout out establishments and properties that will make your dog feel at home. Most importantly, all our testers are dog owners so you can be certain they know exactly what to look for when it comes to pet-friendly accommodation. There’s so much variety you’ll be spoiled for choice. Have a happy doggy holiday!

holiday gives you a chance to escape routine and discover new destinations. If you’re looking for a break where you can enjoy fine remote beaches, endless open spaces, and plenty of variety look no further than Britain. There’s no better way to relax and unwind than by exploring the UK countryside with your dog. With its rolling hills, picturesque villages, and sites of historical importance, the UK has lots to offer dogs and their owners. If you travel the length and breadth of Britain you will encounter a vast range of attractions, walks, gardens, pubs, and cafés that will happily welcome four-legged visitors — and even provide a refreshing bowl of water or tasty treat for canine explorers.

BONNY SCOTLAND Nowhere in the UK captures the imagination more than Scotland; it is a country of contrasts, with a stunning coastline, magnificent mountains, and vibrant cities. The southern part of Scotland covers areas such as historic Edinburgh and the Lothians, the Scottish Borders, Ayrshire and Arran, and Dumfries and Galloway. This area is packed with endless opportunities for dog walking including Galloway Forest Park and Loch Ken. Some of Britain’s finest dog-friendly gardens are also based in this region. On a visit to the Scottish Borders, why not sample the delight’s of St Cuthbert’s Way? The long-distance trail links Melrose, where St Cuthbert started his religious

life, with the Holy Island off the Northumberland coast. Dogs are also welcome to explore the extensive grounds and riverside walks at Floors Castle in Kelso; water bowls are provided outside for dogs at the castle’s courtyard and terraced cafés. Further north the dramatic highlands are a dog lover’s paradise. As well as exploring the glens and Cairngorms National Park, there are many activities for dogs and owners to enjoy including a cruise along Loch Ness, a vintage steam journey on the

“The dramatic highlands are a dog lover’s paradise.”

Strathspey Railway, which runs through the Cairngorms, and a ride up Ben Nevis on Britain’s only mountain gondola.

NORTHBOUND The northern regions of England also offer stunning scenery and are incredibly dog friendly. The beautiful Lake District in north-west England is home to Keswick, the most dog-friendly town in the UK. Four-legged visitors are welcome in many of the town’s shops, pubs, on boat trips, and in taxis. Grizedale Forest, near Hawkshead in the heart of the Lake District National Park, is great for a day out, and there are plenty of other stunning locations in the Lakes to enjoy a walk. Sit back and enjoy a cruise along Lake Windermere — England’s largest lake and the most popular attraction in

Cumbria. Windermere Lake Cruises welcomes well-behaved dogs on board its boats at no extra cost. North-east England includes the counties of Northumberland and Yorkshire. Home to Hadrian’s Wall, one of the most familiar landmarks in Britain, Northumberland has much for dogs and owners to discover. From the dramatic Northumberland National Park, where visitors can sample trails around Kielder Water, to the rugged Cheviot hills, you and your pet will have a holiday to remember. Don’t forget that you can walk sections of the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail, which runs for 84 miles from Wallsend, near Newcastle, to Bowness on Solway, in Cumbria. Along the way you will encounter ancient ruins,

“When it comes to Yorkshire, the great outdoors is just waiting to be explored.” Roman remains, and plenty of dog-friendly pubs. Remember to keep your dog on a lead in fields where there is livestock. There’s more to Northumberland than the area around Hadrian’s Wall. The coastline of Northumberland is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and boasts a number of sandy beaches that are dog friendly including Druridge Bay, situated between Amble and Cresswell. It is a popular destination for dog walkers and there are miles of sand for canine explorers to run and play on. Before setting off to a beach, check that there are no restrictions in place for dogs. Dog-friendly attractions in this area include Warkworth Castle which is owned by English Heritage, Belsay Hall

gardens, near Morpeth, and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. When it comes to Yorkshire, the great outdoors is just waiting to be explored. Yorkshire encompasses nearly a third of the total area of national parks in England — the North York Moors, most of the Yorkshire Dales, and part of the Peak District. The breathtaking county also has two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which cover more than 800 square kilometres. The Yorkshire Dales National Park — a section of the dales with national park status — has miles of extraordinary countryside to stroll and meander through. Dogs are allowed on large areas of open access land within the park, although there may be some restrictions in certain areas where dogs are not allowed. Make sure you put a visit to the North York Moors on the top of your list of places to go. The North York Moors Railway allows dogs on its trains for a small charge, but not in the dining area or in first class.

ensure you and your dog enjoy the perfect getaway at any time of year. Wales has a magical feel about it, and on your travels you will encounter numerous castles, ruins, ancient market towns, woodlands, and wide open spaces. Wales has three breathtaking national parks — Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in West Wales, and the Brecon Beacons National Park in Mid Wales.

Woodland walks aplenty.

WELSH WONDERS There are 14 regions of Wales which all have varied and diverse landscapes that will

There are many dog-friendly gardens to visit in the UK.

These areas are ideal to explore with your dog and offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. At Snowdonia, there are 100 lakes, 90 mountain peaks, and 37 miles of beaches and coastline, plus the highest mountain in England and Wales. Dogs will love the pretty lakes, waterfalls, and green open spaces of the rolling Welsh countryside on a visit to the Brecon Beacons National Park. For some, a holiday isn’t complete without a visit to the coast. Wales’ Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is unique as Britain’s only national park which is predominately coastal. Pembrokeshire has a spectacular stretch of coastline, and you are guaranteed to

find areas off the beaten track where there aren’t many other people. If you and your dog want to soak up some history, Pembroke Castle welcomes well-behaved dogs on leads inside the attraction.

PERFECT PEAKS The counties in the central region of England include picture-perfect villages, rolling green hills, and plenty of wildlife. The Peak District in Derbyshire is a popular

destination for people who enjoy walking, which means there are ample opportunities to discover what it has to offer. It was designated as Britain’s first National Park in 1951 and it is here you will find hidden caves, stately homes, and inspiring tors. Looking for a dog-friendly day out in the Peaks? There are many to choose from including Chatsworth House, where you can walk in the gardens, and Crich Tramway Village, near Matlock, which warmly welcomes dogs on leads

anywhere on site except in the children’s play area and food areas. Shropshire, which borders Wales, boasts the scenic Shropshire Hills — an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — that cover a quarter of the county. Don’t forget to visit Ironbridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an impressive structure; there are lots of woodland and riverside walks in and around Ironbridge. Stop off at Blists Hill Victorian Town; this open-air

museum is incredibly dog friendly and a unique way to spend a day. The Shropshire Union Canal can be found in the north of Shropshire and offers fantastic views of the waterways.

EASTERN DELIGHT What images spring to mind when you think of East Anglia? Traditional seaside towns, windmills, and lush green fields are plentiful in Norfolk and Suffolk — two of the most dog-friendly counties in the UK. Heaths, arable farmland, marshes, coasts, rivers, and dunes cover Norfolk, and it is ideal for a getaway with your dog. Norfolk is home to some well-known towns and villages, and the Norfolk Broads is probably one of its most iconic areas. This magical network of waterways is the UK’s largest nationally protected wetland and an important area for wildlife. Spend a few days exploring the many rivers, lakes, and charming villages and market towns that sit on the water’s edge. On a visit to Norfolk and Suffolk you must make a trip to the seaside — there are many beaches to choose from. In Norfolk, you will find a number of delightful beaches next to each other along the coast that welcome dogs all year round. Holkham beach — which has been voted the best beach in the UK — is a hidden gem: miles of golden sand to wander, pine woods, and walkers can follow the Peddar’s Way and Norfolk Coast Path trail. In Suffolk, Southwold

“There are an endless number of attractions in Norfolk and Suffolk that welcome dogs.” Denes, Dunwich Heath, and Kessingland near Lowestoft are worth a visit, although remember to check for restrictions on dogs at certain times of year. There are an endless number of attractions in Norfolk and Suffolk that welcome canine companions including Thetford Forest and Priory, Sheringham Park, Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden in south Walsham, and Bradfield

GOING SOUTH With its blue-green sea, towering cliffs, and delicious cream teas, the south-west corner of England is home to some of the most spectacular counties in the UK. Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset have a mild climate, a delightful blend of scenery, and quaint fishing villages. The two national parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor in Devon cover an area of 635 square miles and provide an ideal destination for dog lovers. You will also find the UK’s very own slice of the Mediterranean on the English Riviera in south Devon. One of the best things about going to Dorset is the

“The southwest corner of England is home to some of the most spectacular counties in the UK.” chance to walk along the Jurassic Coast — a World Heritage site of which part lies in east Devon. In the heart of Cornwall lies Bodmin Moor, a rugged landscape filled with forests, woodlands, waterfalls, and craggy tors. For a slice of Cornish history, Tintagel is not to be missed. Dogs and owners can climb dozens upon dozens of wooden steps from the mainland to the island, where they can explore the castle ruins on a cliff top. A few miles from Tintagel is Trebarwith Strand beach, which is dog friendly all year round. The beaches in south-west England are very dog friendly, and many can be accessed on the South West Coast Path National Trail. Stretching along the coast from Somerset to Dorset, the 630-mile trail is regarded as one of the finest in the world, and it is very accommodating to dogs.

Woods in Bury St Edmunds. South-east England is also home to some notable seaside towns; Brighton is renowned for being friendly towards dogs, and has many pubs, cafes, shops, and even galleries that open their doors to four-legged visitors. One particular doggy gem is Metrodeco tea salon which has a 1930s theme and serves canine diners their own dog treats. It is also known for holding dog parties on occasions! Walkers can visit the South Downs National Park in Eastbourne where they can discover Beachy Head, a natural beauty hot spot with the UK’s highest sea cliff.

An information pack in The Old Kirk pointed us in the direction of two very handy walks. The leaflets were very informative about where we could take Sybil. Although The Old Kirk does not provide any extras for pets, it is still very welcoming to dogs. There isn’t a huge list of dos and don’ts as far as dogs are concerned.

Best of the Highlands TULLOCH CASTLE HOTEL, DINGWALL, NEAR INVERNESS, ROSS-SHIRE. Accommodation: Hotel. Cost: From £70 per double room per night, for B&B. Tested by: Stephen Jenkinson, with Border Collie Jess.

THE ACCOMMODATION: This hotel has everything you’d expect from a 12th century castle in the Scottish Highlands. It oozes character: thick solid doors, oak-panelled walls, crackling open fires, stuffed stags’ heads, winding staircases, and tartan! I could just imagine hunting and companion dogs curled up by the open fires, so it’s no wonder the hotel is dog friendly today. It is located on the hillside above the market town of Dingwall, and is set over three floors. There is no lift so discuss your room choice if you or your dog aren’t good on stairs. THE ACCOMMODATION: There’s no doubt you are in Scotland when you arrive at Newton Hotel, with its impressive turrets and spires. The surrounding grounds — though not enclosed — offer lots of handy dog exercise options, plenty big enough for long ball throws. Our comfy room had a huge bed and great views over the grounds. A spiral staircase leads to a private sitting room in one of the towers. While there is a lift, there isn’t level access to all areas, so discuss your room choice if you or your dog aren’t good on stairs. Apart from being in your bedroom, dogs are restricted to non-food serving public areas of the hotel.

OUT AND ABOUT IN THE AREA: ● A two-minute drive away is the lovely, dog-friendly Nairn central beach where you can hang out with the town’s many dog walkers. There’s even thoughtful signs warning about the dangers to dogs from eating seaweed. ● Ten miles away is the Forestry Commission’s massive Culbin Forest — its coastline alone is nine miles long. But you won’t get lost as its many walking trails are well signposted. We did the Hill 99 trail that includes a spectacular treetop viewing platform, where you get a bird’s-eye view of the thousands of magnificent pine trees that are planted on shifting sands. Sled dogs also train in the forest. ● The biggest local attraction for nature lovers are the Moray Firth bottlenose dolphins, which are regularly seen all year round along this coast. The best place to see them — a rising tide is best — is at Chanonry Point, a 40-minute drive

away. The best thing is you can see them when dog walking along the beach. ● Call in at the Kessock Bridge Dolphin Centre for details of the latest sightings.

HONISTER COTTAGE, SEATOLLER, CUMBRIA.

AT A GLANCE

Accommodation: Self-catering cottage. Cost: £1,000 per week. Short breaks available. Tested by: Sarah Brockbank and Thomas Carlyon, with Jack Russell Terrier Bella.

THE ACCOMMODATION: Honister Cottage is a charming property located in the small hamlet of Seatoller in the Borrowdale Valley. Situated at the foot of Honister Pass, the cottage is surrounded by breathtaking countryside. The kitchen has a slate floor so we didn’t have to worry about dirty paw prints on clean carpets when coming in from outside. Upstairs there is a long corridor with three bedrooms, a bathroom, and a cosy sitting room. Our bedroom was extremely comfortable, with a king-sized bed and en suite bathroom. At the back of the cottage there is a big garden leading down to a river, which was great for

letting Bella out in the mornings. Unfortunately, there isn’t a back door leading to the garden so we had to go around the side of the cottage to reach it.

YES, DOWNSTAIRS

Jan Wilkinson, the owner of Honister Cottage, came to meet us once we had arrived. Jan was very helpful, giving us ideas for places to go.

ANY ADDED EXTRAS FOR DOGS/OWNERS? The cottage has dog bowls for food and water. Dogs get a hamper or gift on arrival. We were provided with a little hamper containing bread and breakfast juice.

● Although we chose a very wet weekend to visit Honister Cottage, it didn’t dampen our spirits. The fells are easily accessible from the cottage; we took Jan’s advice and did the Castle Cragg walk to Derwentwater. This walk is a combination of fell, woodland, and riverside. The views along the way are simply stunning — even in the rain. We popped into a little village called Grange along the way

THE ACCOMMODATION: Situated on the edge of the Lake District, the George and Dragon is a stylish country inn with an award-winning restaurant. There are 11 bedrooms which are individually designed with furniture and paintings from the Lowther family collection. Although our room wasn’t very spacious it was cosy, welcoming, and clean. The bathrooms either have a walk-in shower or a roll-top bath. The inn has a cosy bar and there is a lovely communal sitting room at the top of the stairs, with tea and coffee-making facilities. Wifi is available throughout the inn.

HOW DOG FRIENDLY WAS YOUR RECEPTION? We were made to feel welcome and at home, as was Patsy. The young staff were most attentive and helpful.

Dogs are welcome in most areas of the inn.

ANY ADDED EXTRAS FOR DOGS/OWNERS? Patsy received a doggy welcome pack which consisted of a map of a nearby walk, a biscuit, and poo bags. There isn’t an enclosed area for dogs but the inn has a garden and a dedicated dog poo dustbin. Well-behaved dogs can be left unattended in the bedrooms at mealtimes and they are allowed anywhere in the pub, except in the dining room. The bar serves the same menu as the restaurant, so if you want to keep your dog with you during dinner you will not lose out on sampling the delicious local fare on offer. There is a large cushioned dog bed in reception. The staff and owners of the inn understand the needs of canine guests as they are dog owners. We arrived without a dog bowl but one was provided as soon as I asked for it.

Quaint in the country OAKER VIEW COTTAGE, DARLEY BRIDGE, DERBYSHIRE. Accommodation: Self-catering cottage. Cost: £290 – £475 per week. Short breaks available. Tested by: Andrea and Maddie McHugh, with cross-breeds Honey and Coco.

THE ACCOMMODATION This is a very quaint and cosy 18th century cottage in the village of Darley Bridge. It is full of character and very comfortable. There is only one bedroom but it has a king-sized bed. The bathroom is huge with ample hot water — perfect for a relaxing soak after a long walk. Maddie was very happy to discover free wifi. There is a wood burner in the lounge, which would be lovely in winter. There is an enclosed and very sunny courtyard outside which was ideal for the dogs to wander around unsupervised. Oaker View cottage is ideal for couples and provides a perfect base for anyone with a dog who wants a relaxing walking holiday in idyllic countryside.

HOW DOG FRIENDLY WAS YOUR RECEPTION? We were met by Tina Boulden, the owner, who was very pleasant and delighted to meet Honey and Coco. Tina and her husband have dogs themselves and encourage owners to treat and respect the cottage as they would their own home. There are no rigid rules about where dogs are allowed to go, apart from not washing them in the bath.

ANY ADDED EXTRAS FOR DOGS/OWNERS? There was milk in the fridge for a welcome cup of tea. The cottage is clean and tidy, and contains everything you need for a relaxing break. Fresh clean towels are included. Dog bowls can be found under the sink.

OUT AND ABOUT IN THE AREA: ● Maddie and I loved exploring this beautiful part of the world. The information pack in the cottage contained details of some lovely local walks, and the area is close to the Heritage Way and the Derwent Valley. We tried the nearest walk, which started from outside the door and took us through stunning woodland — the dogs absolutely loved it. ● We also explored the riverside walk from Darley Dale to Matlock,

which was very pretty and took about an hour. ● We visited the Three Stags Heads pub next door for Sunday lunch and found it very dog friendly, and the food was delicious. ● Steam train enthusiasts will enjoy a nostalgic journey back in time on the Peak Rail steam train, which has a station in Darley Dale. Dogs are allowed on the train, except in the restaurant car.

Accommodation: Hotel. Cost: From £123 per double room per single night, for B&B. Special offers available for two nights or more. Tested by: Kelly Felstead and Tom Jackson, with Cocker Spaniel Henry.

THE ACCOMMODATION: Craig y Nos Castle offers a unique experience for a holiday with your four-legged companion. Situated within the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park, Craig y Nos is a 19th century castle which was once home to leading opera star Adelina Patti. She built a theatre inside the castle which still stands today. The castle has a mix of en suite double and family rooms, all of which are dog friendly. Some rooms have direct access to the garden. Our room was a decent size and offered views over Craig y Nos Country Park. With wooden doors, beamed ceilings, and brick walls, the castle retains many original features.

There are lots of places to sit outside and the castle has fenced-in grounds for dogs to explore, with several poo bins on site. There is even a doggy bathing and swimming pool. Craig y Nos Country Park can be accessed from the castle grounds. The castle hosts weddings at weekends, so if you’re visiting during peak season it’s best to stay during the week.

HOW DOG FRIENDLY WAS YOUR RECEPTION? Dogs are welcome everywhere except in the dining room. However, canine guests are able to dine with their owners in the Patti Bar. On our first night, almost every diner in the bar had a dog curled up next to them. The staff were really friendly to Henry and asked lots of questions about him. Craig y Nos is very much a pet-friendly hotel — there is even a castle cat who patrols the hallways.

ANY ADDED EXTRAS FOR DOGS/OWNERS? The theatre built by opera singer Adelina Patti.

Beds are provided in the bar for dogs to use. All doggy visitors get a complimentary sausage for breakfast.

Bed linen is included within the price but guests need to take their own bath towels and tea towels. The beach can be accessed directly from the chalets within minutes. All that running on the beach wore Winston out!

HOW DOG FRIENDLY WAS YOUR RECEPTION? Dogs are allowed throughout the chalet. We were not given any restrictions for Winston, but it’s preferred that you take your own blankets if your dog is likely to go on the furniture. Although there are no enclosed gardens, dogs can toilet in the grass areas outside the chalets. The beach is also within a minute’s walk — what more can a dog ask for!

ANY ADDED EXTRAS FOR DOGS/OWNERS? Tea, coffee, and milk are provided ready for your arrival. A wipe-clean dog mat was supplied for Winston’s food bowls, as well as a torch for late-night toileting. Information on a local vet’s and dog-friendly pubs and cafés was included in a pack in the chalet.

Accommodation: Hotel. Cost: From £95 per double room per night, for B&B. Special offers available. Tested by: Susan Stevens and Jay Langdon, with Springer Spaniel Cassie.

THE ACCOMMODATION: The Westleton Crown is a traditional coaching inn dating back to the 12th century, set in the pretty village of Westleton. It has 34 rooms with en suite facilities. The rooms allocated for dogs are located in the grounds of the hotel, so you have direct access to outside. We stayed in the Grebe which is decorated to a very high standard and has a queen-sized bed, a TV and DVD player, and an en suite with a roll-top bath and a separate shower. Our room was upstairs so we also had a little balcony with a table and two chairs. The room was very quiet, even though there were people staying with dogs below us. You can eat meals with your dog in the bar, terraced gardens, or in your room.

HOW DOG FRIENDLY WAS YOUR RECEPTION? We were made to feel very welcome with Cassie. The staff were very helpful and attentive; the waiters in particular were very good with Cassie when we went into the bar for our meals. Cassie is a nervous dog and very wary of people she doesn’t know, but they took time with her, crouching down and talking to her — with a little bribery along the way!

ANY ADDED EXTRAS FOR DOGS/OWNERS? Your dog can accompany you to breakfast and dinner in the bar or garden. Four-legged guests receive a sausage for breakfast. There is no enclosed exercise area but there are walks direct from the hotel. The hotel has spare dog bowls

OUT AND ABOUT IN THE AREA: ● We walked to Dunwich Heath, which is owned by the National Trust. There are restrictions between March and August due to nesting birds, so dogs must be kept on a short lead. There are no restrictions on the beach. ● We also went to Walberswick and took a boat across the River Blythe to Southwold. The main beaches in Southwold have restrictions in place during the summer months. However, Southwold Denes — just north of the main beach — is dog friendly throughout the year. The beach to the south of Southwold is sandy and pet friendly all year round.

THE ACCOMMODATION: The Oriental is a unique boutique hotel off the main seafront in Brighton. A dog-friendly beach and large grass area are five minutes from the hotel. The hotel has nine bedrooms, four of which are dog friendly. Our room was clean, light, and comfortable with wooden floors and a contemporary feel. We were on the third floor which was up five flights of stairs; it was difficult to manage with my elderly dog at times. Dogs are welcome in the bar/breakfast area as long as other guests are happy for them to be there. Although evening meals were not included, details of nearby dog-friendly places to eat were provided for guests with dogs. The hotel owners, Jarvis Cash and Lola O’Keefe, are very friendly and clearly doggy people. They were extremely accommodating of Mork’s nervousness and avoidance of n enclosed areas, even bringing e breakfast to us in our room. b Important things for potential guests to consider include the g ffact that there is no street parking (details of local parking is provided (d in advance) and the lack of an exercise area for dogs. e

THE ACCOMMODATION: Deerpark is situated in a valley surrounded by forest with a large ancient millpond at the centre. The site is only 15 minutes from the Cornish coast and is easily accessible by road. It consists of more than 30 cabins which are all far enough apart to give you a sense of being in the middle of the forest. Many of the cabins look out on to the millpond. Tree houses are also available. Each cabin has a glass front which gives superb views into the forest or across the millpond. The inside of our cabin was clean, contemporary, and very practical. It had everything we needed for our stay including a wood burner and dishwasher. The decked area at the front of

our cabin was accessed by sliding glass doors and there was a hot tub, dining area, and barbecue. The master bedroom had an en suite bathroom and dressing gowns and slippers for us to use. The second bedroom was situated on the ground floor and had plenty of space for our two children and their toys. The cabin didn’t have an area where we could confine the dogs which made keeping them off the furniture very difficult, so taking a crate is recommended.

HOW DOG FRIENDLY WAS YOUR RECEPTION? Our reception was very welcoming and we were given advice on local walks and dog-friendly places to visit. On several occasions the staff

directed us to dog-friendly places, and even called in advance and researched online for us.

ANY ADDED EXTRAS FOR DOGS/OWNERS? There is a dog-walking map, poo bags, and treats in reception. Dogs are allowed in the seated area in reception, or they can be tied up outside where there are bowls with fresh water.

OUT AND ABOUT IN THE AREA: ● We spent several hours each day exploring the many stunning walks through the forest. Dogs have to be on a lead on the site but they can be walked off lead around the forest. Many of the walks are close to a beautiful shaded stream which was ideal for the dogs in the hot weather. ● We explored several excellent dog-friendly beaches which were recommended by reception staff.

THE SLOOP INN, BANTHAM, DEVON.

The Sloop is a 14th century inn which is a short walk from the beach at Bantham — one of the best surfing beaches on the south coast. There are six en suite rooms, including a large family room, situated above the inn, most of which offer great coastal views. Four of the rooms are dog friendly. Our room was very spacious, with two bedrooms and one bathroom. There was ample room to set up Henry’s crate. There is a bar and restaurant which has an excellent reputation for cuisine.

There are restrictions for dogs on the beach during summer. ● Places worth visiting nearby include Soar Mill Cove — a sandy and hidden cove a short walk along the coast from Bolberry Down — and South Milton Sands, which is dog friendly all year round and

The Sloop has a very relaxed atmosphere and attitude when it comes to canine guests, and I immediately felt welcome with Henry in tow. Dogs are welcome everywhere inside the inn including the bar and restaurant. I didn’t have to leave Henry in our room during breakfast as he was able to accompany me. There is a small beer garden outside where dogs are also welcome. Dogs can be left alone in the rooms, but there are also several kennels nearby.

The pouches are complete foods and can be fed on their own but we recommend their use as a tasty topper to make mealtimes that bit more special.

★★★★★ The dog-friendly exercise field has a pond for swimming.

Hopsland Holidays has three self-catering cottages that sleep between four and six people. Up to two dogs are welcome to stay in each cottage for free. The accommodation is situated on the edge of Bodmin Moor, four miles from the market town of Liskeard. We stayed in the Dairy, a two-bedroom cottage with an open-plan lounge and dining room with a TV and DVD player, one double and one twin bedroom, and polished wooden floors. The cottage has an upside-down layout to take advantage of the stunning views of the field and wonderful Cornish countryside beyond.

HOW DOG FRIENDLY WAS YOUR RECEPTION? A bowl of water and a plastic bin packed with towels for muddy paws just inside the entrance made it clear dogs were welcome at the Dairy. A welcome pack for us included free range eggs laid within a few yards of our front door.

● A couple of miles down the road lies Siblyback Lake, a mecca for non-motorised water sports, cycling, and walking. The path around the lake’s circumference covers three-and-a-half miles, and at the end is a dog-friendly café. ● The woodland at nearby Golitha Falls is another excellent dog-walking area, as is Bodmin Adrian relaxes with Indi and Norman.

THE ACCOMMODATION: Originally a large working farm, Bosinver is now home to a number of picturesque cottages dotted around the farm. A number of the cottages are dog friendly; we stayed in Valley View, a two-bedroom cottage overlooking a big field, near a children’s play area and a little wood and lake. It is an incredibly peaceful location. The quality of the accommodation is top notch; beautifully decorated and in great condition. None of the cottages has a fenced garden; they are all open plan. This isn’t ideal for late-night toileting. Bosinver is perfect for families and has high-class facilities including a swimming pool, a tennis court, a play barn, and outside play areas. Dogs are not allowed to stay over Easter and during school ssummer holidays. Modern décor inside.

HOW DOG FRIENDLY WAS YOUR RECEPTION? Dogs are not allowed on the furniture, and owners need to ensure they wipe muddy paws. Make sure you bring your own dog towels as they are not provided. There are no poo bins anywhere on site but there is easy access to the outside bin at each cottage. There are lots of farm ducks and other birds wandering around the fields, paths, and cottages, so it may not be a good location for off-lead walking. However, with so many beautiful beaches locally your dog will soon burn off any excess energy.

A hose is available to wash your dog after muddy adventures, and there is a secure kennel on site if you don’t wish to leave your dog in a crate in the porch of your cottage.

● Cornwall is fantastic as a dog friendly location; a good number of beaches allow dogs all year round, and others are happy to allow them out of season. ● Quite a few of the pubs are welcoming to dogs.

Delightful Devon THE ARUNDELL ARMS HOTEL, LIFTON, DEVON. Accommodation: Hotel. Cost: From £180 per double room per night, for B&B, depending on season. Special offers available. Tested by: Alison and Ken Queenborough, with Marmite and Tolley.

THE ACCOMMODATION: The Arundell Arms Hotel is a 300-year-old former coaching inn, surrounded by more than 20 miles of private lakes and fishing rivers. Situated in Lifton, the hotel is a short distance from Dartmoor and the border with Cornwall. The Arundell Arms is one of England’s premier fishing hotels, and is famous for country sports, fly fishing, hunting, and shooting. We saw many other guests with dogs, and some people even stopped off at the hotel for an evening meal, so they could bring their dogs into the hotel pub. Although there isn’t a completely enclosed garden for dogs to exercise in, there is ample space outside for a morning leg Dogs are allowed everywhere, except in the restaurant.

stretch and to toilet before bed. Dogs are not allowed in the main restaurant; we were able to leave our dogs in our room so we could still enjoy the amazing cuisine, which makes the most of the fantastic local food. On other evenings, we happily enjoyed more brasserie-style fare of equally high standard in the hotel’s on-site pub, with the added benefit of having the dogs curled under our feet.

HOW DOG FRIENDLY WAS YOUR RECEPTION? The owner, Adam Fox-Edwards, is more than happy for dogs to be in and around the hotel — but not on the riverbanks. We were made to feel very welcome on arrival — it is easy to see why many guests return year after year. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful regarding things to do and where to walk; they even went to the trouble of finding out the tide times along the coast so we could find a beach with lots of sand for the dogs to run and walk on.

a welcome message, beds, dog bowls, and treats. Poo bags are also provided, and there is a bin for dog poo in the car park.

OUT AND ABOUT IN THE AREA: ● We visited the nearby town of Tavistock and found a dog-friendly café called Karen’s. ● We explored Dartmoor where we found some solitude and space for the dogs to have a good run. ● We had a day trip along the south coast and walked along part of the Jurassic Coast. When we left for home we detoured along the north Devon coast and via Exmoor.

You might think such an impressive country house hotel wouldn’t be overly dog friendly, but being nestled in the most spectacular countryside between Exmoor and Dartmoor, we were certain we would receive a warm welcome. There are four dog-friendly rooms which are in a separate building from the main hotel, called Forester’s Rest. These are ideal for people holidaying with dogs. Our room was very spacious. It offered great views, and we had full sight of Marmite and Tolley when they went outside to toilet. The hotel has a small entrance hall; when we came back from a

We received a humorous welcome email from the in-house canine concierge — a Labrador called William — which is sent to all doggy guests prior to their visit. We also had a warm welcome from the staff at reception and the hotel manager, who showed us to our room. We were given lots of advice on walks both in the immediate vicinity and further afield. Dogs are welcome in the Cellar Bar, but not in the restaurants.

ANY ADDED EXTRAS FOR DOGS/OWNERS? Owners can choose a special dog package which includes a range of treats for their dog including a gift bag, two-course doggy dinner, a basket, and a blanket. On arrival, Marmite and Tolley had beds, blankets, treats, biscuits, and poo bags laid out for them.

OUT AND ABOUT IN THE AREA: ● You are spoiled for choice with walking opportunities in south-west England.
