SG Blocks is pleased to announce that an Evaluation Service Report (ESR) was recently issued by The International Code Council (ICC) for our GreenSteel®, which confirms code compliance with the International Building Code® (IBC), International Fire Code® (IFC), and NFPA 101, “Life Safety Code®” (LSC).

What is an Evaluation Service Report? Evaluation Service Reports, commonly referred to as ESRs, are issued by third party agencies such as ICC Evaluation Services Inc. or UL to confirm code compliance with requirements.

OUR APPROACH Speed to deployment is one of the major advantages of container-based construction. With traditional forms of construction, site development proceeds unit construction. However, by incorporating a parallel process, site development takes place, while at the same time modular construction is taking place. This parallel process produces a substantial cost savings for the developer and the Owner. Product can be deployed quicker, residents can occupy dwelling units more rapidly, and in the end, cities and municipalities can enjoy the advantages of having better product for their citizens to live in; especially in regions that are prone to wind, water and seismic conditions.

The challenge of developing housing product in regions where the cost of land and infrastructure has escalated higher than the cost of living, has placed some developers in a challenging predicament. This is what happened in the City of McKinney, Texas when we introduced container-based housing for the first time. The result was that the City fell in love with the concept and embraced it whole-heartedly! Currently we are building 35 new affordable townhomes completely made from repurposed shipping containers.

Because SG Blocks specializes in modular construction, which repurposes out-of-fleet shipping containers, we can build an almost unlimited number of homes. Currently, there are over 1 million these out-of-fleet containers sitting in depots throughout the United States.
Green, offsite, modular construction is the wave of the future. Green building is the practice of maximizing the efficiency with which buildings use resources–energy, water, and materials–while reducing their impact on the local environment. In modular building construction, this is accomplished through environmentally sensitive practices throughout a building’s complete life cycle: site choice, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. A well-planned green modular building will: 1) Reduce operating costs by using less energy and water. 2) Improve public and occupant health through improved indoor air quality. 3) Reduce ecological impacts by lessening storm water runoff and the “heat island” effect.
