Voter Registration Drives in Texas In Texas, only people who are deputized, i.e. Volunteer Deputy Registrars may legally register voters in the state of Texas. If someone isn’t deputized then they may not under any circumstances touch completed voter registration forms, (but touching blank ones is okay). In order to become deputized one must attend a deputization class that lasts about two hours, at the end of which one will be issued a Voter Deputization ID card that allows them by law to register people; and when registering people the registrar MUST have this badge/ID at all times because that’s the law. You have to be 18 years old, registered to vote, a US citizen, and a resident of the county in which you are taking the class. You can contact your local government, and they probably will be able to find adults that are already deputized to help register voters. This would make voter registration easier. Voter Reg drives should be non-partisan unless you have permission from the place at which you’re registering people to be partisan. The forms MUST be turned back into the office or person by which they are being entered or collected within 5 days of being filled out, this is the law. Anyone is eligible to get registered as long as they live in the county, and are 18 or will be 18 by the date of the election. Convicted felons may register if they are off parole or “off paper.” I am ecstatic to serve as your 2014 – 2015 Texas State Director of Activism. I hope you all have success with this initiative and if you have any questions feel free to contact me at mpatel@texas.jsa.org. Sincerely, Maya Patel
