In keeping with our theme “PAGSIBOL” (Flourishing / Blossoming), we are expanding our horizons, celebrating time-honored traditions in our new home. It has been a pleasure to educate each new generation of our community of the beauty of our shared culture. ABOUT FILAM ARTS The Association for the Advancement of Filipino American Arts & Culture “Embracing the value of KAPWA (shared being), the Association for the Advancement of Filipino American Arts and Culture’s (also known as FilAm ARTS) mission is to facilitate community synergy and transformation by advancing the arts and diverse cultural heritage of Filipinos through arts services, presentation, and education.” For over two decades, FilAm ARTS has engaged diverse publics in cultural arts as a means to empower and cultivate individual and community self-determination through its public programs: The Annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC) – from its humble beginning as a project started by the City of Los Angeles to foster cultural understanding among the diverse constituency of the city, FPAC is now a 22-year-strong Angeleno community tradition. FPAC is a series of multi-disciplinary arts events presenting over 500 artists to 20,000 attendees, engaging about 400 volunteers in collaboration with over 100 partner organizations. The Pilipino Artist Network (PAN) is a statewide capacity-building initiative for artists in eight multiple disciplines: music, dance, literary, visual arts, folk/traditional, film/media, arts education, and presenters. By developing mutually supportive relationships, the PAN is designed to promote the growth of multiple disciplines, proving greater access to resources and markets through collective efforts. Eskuwela Kultura (EK) advances the education component of FilAm ARTS by providing a range of arts classes in dance, music, visual arts, and production. Adhering to the CA standards for Visual and Performing Arts Education, EK increases literacy and promotes civic engagement annually for about 300 youth. Buy Pinoy is a public awareness and outreach campaign to stimulate economic development by generating community support for over 250 small businesses, and engaging Filipino consumers to invest their dollars within the community. The Saysay Project aims to engage the community to tell their stories, and to document these shared stories. The purpose of the project is to highlight the contributions of Filipino Americans to U.S. life and culture - the labor workers in agriculture and fisheries in the first wave of migration; people in the military service; professionals such as nurses, teachers, doctors, accountants, and place makers in the U.S.

Artist of Excellence Award Maestro Robert Shroder is the Principal Conductor & Music Director of the Filipino - American Symphony Orchestra (FASO). His previous assignments include: Founding Conductor of the Boyle Heights Youth Symphony in 2002 which was the favorite symphony of the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles that Shroder and his team frequently performed in government social functions and community outreach concerts; member of the Chula Vista Pops Orchestra, San Diego Community Band, the Al Bahr Shrine Concert Band and The Notables Big Band Jazz all based in San Diego, before settling in Los Angeles. He also gave music workshops at local schools in Ohio when he moved to the US. Robert studied at the University of the Philippines College of Music major in Flute with Prof. Enrique D. Barceló, and later concentrated in chamber music and orchestra conducting. He was the principal flutist of the Philippine Youth Orchestra under Prof. Sergio Esmilla Jr., and the leader and flutist of the U.P. Woodwind Quintet and Flute Ensemble. An outstanding flutist, Bob is the Grand

Prize winner of the 1982 National Music Competition for Young Artists. Right after his graduation recital, he auditioned and was hired to be the principal flutist of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, and later joined the Manila Chamber Orchestra. A consistent university scholar, he was invited to join the Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Fraternity which was brought to the Philippine major music institutions by National Artist Dr. Lucrecia Kasilag. He taught at the University giving flute and chamber music lessons, while doing regular orchestra and studio recording sessions for the Philippine movie industry. He attended conducting workshops and master classes under Prof. Reynaldo Paguio, Maestro Lorenzo Palomo from Spain, Chinese conductor Helen Quach and Christoph Poppen, Chamber Orchestra conductor and violinist from Germany.

Community Arts Award Tita Pambid, aka Nenita Domingo was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. She brings with her a wealth of experience and heritage which she shares with the community through art workshops and teaching at UCLA. She earned her PhD in Philippine Studies from the University of the Philippines. As practitioner of theater, film, and television arts, she had the honor to be included in the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Encyclopedia of Philippine Art and the R & R Almanac Book of Facts. For her, “Life is Art, and Art is Life.”

Shroder performed and conducted concerts, operas, Broadway musicals and Zarzuelas in some of the major concert venues. The Cultural Center of the Philippines, The Manila Metropolitan Theatre, Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, Pasadena Civic Auditorium, Cerritos Performing Arts Theatre, Hollywood Bowl, Pantages Theatre in Hollywood and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Reuben Torres Domingo was an architecture student in the Philippines but ended up as a Filipino filmmaker. He worked in the Philippine Film Industry,

Equally comfortable to both classical and pop genre, the Maestro expresses his love in performing for a mixed crowd, most especially to Filipino-American community events to express and share the beauty of the Philippine arts and culture through music.

Public Service Award

Eric Garcetti Eric Garcetti is the 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles. His “back to basics” agenda is focused on job creation and solving everyday problems for L.A. residents.

Community Service Award Edwin Raquel and Leilani Raquel, MD Edwin Raquel graduated from the University of the Philippines with the degree of Bachelor of Science magna cum laude and received his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Leilani Raquel received her PreMed degree from the University of the Philippines and completed her Doctor of Medicine from UERMMC with a specialty in obstetrics-gynecology. She has a diplomate from the American Board of Family Practice and is an attending physician at the USC Medical Center. Edwin Raquel worked for 23 years with the SunAmerica Life Companies where he served as the Chief Actuary and held the distinction of being the only executive of Asian descent in senior management. As a business entrepreneur, he is currently the President and CEO of his own healthcare company. As a couple, Mr. and Dr. Raquel support the arts and the talents of Filipino artists, propelling them to co-executive produce the successful show “Society of Seven with Lani Misalucha” in Las Vegas, making it the landmark first ever Filipino show on the Strip, and earning them as producers a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Fame and bestowing the “Best Singer “ award on Lani Misalucha in a field of nominees which included Celine Dion and Toni Braxton. As entertainment impresarios, Mr. and Dr. Raquel have

Ardent but quiet advocates of the many philanthropic and civic initiatives of the Filipino community to elevate our image as a people, they have hosted high profile charitable events at their home, from a fundraiser for FilAmArts, to “Dining with the Chefs” of the Ayala Corp and Phil-Dev to benefit education, and most recently, “Hope After Haiyan” to benefit the Benedictine nuns and their school in Tacloban.

Royal was born in Los Angeles, under the shadow of the Filipino Christian Church, which Royal’s father had help found. Royal, however, spent his childhood in the Philippines. Royal was a graduate of Chapman College and USC, BA in Sociology and MA in Social Work. He was the Harbor Area Director of Neighborhood Youth Association, a Field Work Instructor at UCLA in Social Work; and eventually the Project Director of the Asian American Community Mental Health Training Center. Royal took the initiative to interacting with the youth of the Filipino American Community. In the 1970s, he helped initiate and develop youth programs such as Search of Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) and Service for Asian American Youth (SAAY). He initiated and provided leadership to many college students, especially the UCLA Samanhang Pilipino student group, provided leadership in initiating “teach-ins,” conferences, workshops in Pilipino American history and community organizing. He shared his experiences and knowledge as a Lecturer at UCLA on the Pilipino American Experience and History for over 10 years. The UCLA Asian American Studies Center honored Royal by crating the Royal Morales Prize in Pilipino American Studies--an annual award for the most outstanding undergraduate paper on the subject.

While their contributions in the area of community service are noteworthy, Mr. and Dr. Raquel believe their greatest achievement by far is raising their 4 daughters as loving, responsible, and compassionate human beings. Royal Morales Royal Morales was known as an iconic mentor for many community leaders in the Los Angeles Asian Pacific American (APA) Community and especially the Filipino American Community, a distinguished UCLA lecturer and author. He initiated and implemented community grassroots programs in Los Angeles, and a great constant for many future Filipino American community leaders. He was better known by many as “Uncle Roy.”

in foreign films in the Philippines, in Philippine television and in the Experimental Cinema of the Philippines, worked for film institute/centers and was a photographer for the forestry department for about fifteen years before emigrating to the U.S. In Hollywood he worked for about a decade in the film industry as a sound editor before shifting to architecture for commercial buildings. After eight years as an architect designer, the economic downturn of 2008 pushed him to reinvent himself once more which brought him into the world of solar energy. He currently works as a designer, installer and sales person for solar PV systems with interests favoring energy efficiency and solutions. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Reuben became an active member of the Pilipino American Heritage for the Arts. He was an organizer of the Pilipino story telling group Stories of Our Lola (SOUL), a participant in the theater groups Manila Actors Studio in Los Angeles and Stage West Inc., and was a partner and the curator for the first Pilipino American art gallery and performance space in Los Angeles called Puro Arte. He has always been a groupie of the Festival for Philippine Arts and had never seized to enjoy Filipino cultural expressions.

Geneva Cruz Geneva Cruz began her career in 1989 as one of the lead singers of the popular group Smokey Mountain. [1] The Smokey Mountain album went double platinum. She was also the very first Grand Prize winner (and the youngest) of “The Voice of Asia” in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, Russia in 1992. Cruz’s first solo album, I Like You, went double platinum The album produced several hit singles, including the title track and “Anak ng Pasig” (from the movie of the same title) in which Geneva appeared. “Anak Ng Pasig,” was also chosen as Best Pop Song by the 1992 Catholic Mass Media Awards. Her second solo album “In the name of Love went platinum and produced hits like “Ang Gaan ng Feeling” and “In the Name of Love”. Cruz’s most recent album was released in August 2013 entitled, “To Manila”.

Mayor, he served as the Councilmember representing the 13th District which includes Hollywood, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and Atwater Village -- all of which were dramatically revitalized under Garcetti’s leadership. Garcetti was raised in the San Fernando Valley and earned his B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University. He studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and the London School of Economics and taught at Occidental College and USC. A fourth generation Angeleno, he and his wife, Amy Elaine Wakeland, have a young daughter. He is a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy reserve and is an avid jazz pianist and photographer.

Experience. Royal died in 2001. He left a legacy of mentorship to groups such as SIPA, SAAY, FilAmArts, Council of Oriental Organizations (COO), LA Refugee Center, and the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON), FilAm Library; and many Southern California Filipino American student groups. Royal wrote two books chronicling the Pilipino American experience in Los Angeles; Makibaka: The Pilipino American Struggle and Makibaka II, updating his first book. Royal wrote, addressing a meeting of the National Association of Social Workers in the late 1990s, that “As change agents, social workers are ethically bound to fight for justice the the judicial and economic areas, with equity and fairness for all. It is sad and tragic to see vividly the deadly and destructive consequences of riots and looting--the use of force, guns and military intervention--an if there is going to be peaceful co-existence among races, the let us all come together and rebuild the cities and heal the wounds.” Royal was a life-long change agent. To Royal, the Pilipino American struggle was continuing and required leadership from Filipino American youth in order to be addressed; and required a campus/community connection in order to succeed.

Gab Valenciano Gab Valenciano is pure power personified and he is arguably one of the most talented and accomplished dancers and choreographers not only in the Philippines but across Asia as well. He has danced all over the world with his father and has gained the respect and admiration of the fans (Twitter following: 475,000 Instagram Followers: 89,672) and continues to impress the music industry with his body of work. He is currently on a hiatus in performing as he is studying a course on Recording Arts at the Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. In other fields, Gab excels in sports specifically the triathlon races (swimming, biking running), and competition basketball, as well as in playing various instruments like the drums, piano, guitar, and percussions. He dabbles in directing and editing videos.

With Los Angeles as home base, we now present you with The Filharmonic, a boy band unique in their musical talent and cultural diversity. The group of Filipino-American youngsters who were featured in NBC’s hit musical competition, “The Sing-Off”, has much to sing about. Making the semi-finals, finishing the first “Sing-Off” National tour, sharing the stage with The Black Eyed Peas and Pentatonix, then being

part of the movie Pitch Perfect 2 is only the kick-off to their amazing journey! They consist of six members: Vocalists VJ Rosales, Joe Caigoy, Trace Gaynor, and Barry Fortgang, Vocal Bass Jules Cruz, and Beat boxer Niko Del Rey. Their melodic vocal style exemplifies an urbanesque hip hop sound with 90’s nostalgia.

Louise Marie Cornillez is known for her powerful, crystal-clear voice, singing opera arias, Broadway showtunes, standards, and much more. She starred in a solo concert – An Evening of Song with Louise Marie Cornillez – at the Barnsdall Gallery Theater in Hollywood, CA, and released a selftitled mini album containing her favorite selections from the concert. She was recently featured at the concert, Serenata Filipina, at the John Anson Ford Theater in Hollywood. Ms. Cornillez is a featured artist with various symphony orchestras including the San Francisco Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Filipino-American Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre National de Lille in France. She has sung the soprano solos in Handel’s Messiah, Brahms’ A German Requiem, and Vivaldi’s Gloria. Ms. Cornillez is a veteran of the stage, performing with the Atlanta Opera, East West Players in Los Angeles, Sacramento Music Circus, and the San Gabriel Valley Music Theater, among others. She shone in roles like Maria in West Side Story, Diana and Connie in A Chorus Line, and Gigi in Miss Saigon. She has been featured in critically-acclaimed productions of Sondheim’s Passion and Sweeney Todd, and proudly originated the role of “Imelda’s Mother” in the world premiere of Imelda: A New Musical at East West Players in Los Angeles. LEGACY STAGE D&G Accordion Ensemble D&G Accordion Ensemble is a group of talented Filipino musicians based in Carson, CA. The group covers multiple genres of music from folk and classical to jazz, pop, and rock. Daniel Velarde and Friends Daniel Velarde is a 17-year-old Filipino singer/songwriter from Thousand Oaks, CA. His group Daniel Velarde and Friends recently released an EP co-written by Daniel and his pianist Neil Reed called Little Aces EP. Major influences include John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and Ed Sheeran. Jazz Phil Hour Bing Martin My name is Maria Braganza Martin from Downey, CA. My family and friends call me “Bing”. I was born and raised in the Alaminos City in the Philippines. Erico Martinez and Chic Nidoy started the band back in 2010.

Room to Improv Since 2002, Room To Improv has been entertaining audiences with its brand of improvisation. Founded by Elvin Lubrin, Room To Improv seeks to create a space for Asian Americans to tell stories and examine issues that are humorous to a diverse audience. Nessa Rica Ramos Nessa Rica is an Australianborn Filipina singer/ songwriter. From her humble begins in 2007 of posting videos on Youtube and doing small coffee shop performances, she has since been travelling and sharing her music across the world. In 2011, Nessa Rica released her EP “Journey”, which is out on iTunes, as well as her store worldwide.

Tinig Choral Tinig is UCLA’s student-run Pilipino-American chorale, founded in 1988. Since its inception, Tinig has performed at numerous venues such as the Filipino American Library Gala and the premiere of the movie “Mga Munting Tinig”. Among other accolades, Tinig was awarded “Best Ensemble” at UCLA’s 1995 Spring Sing.

Kristian Kabuay is a leading authority for the propagation and instruction of the Philippine script, he has spoken at numerous schools and institutions around the world such as Stanford University, UC Berkeley, University of the Philippines, National Anthropology Museum of Madrid and Tokyo University.

Wanda Formed by brothers Jem and Raius Ramos with their college friend Yuro Garcia, Wanda played the Manila underground music scene from 2006 to 2008. Raius then had to stay permanently here in LA until followed by Jem and Yuro years after. They met Arron Nipales and started Wanda here in Los Angeles in 2012 and became a regular in the Fil-Am music scene.

It is led by two Artistic Directors under CSLA, Bryan “Boogiemind” East (Popping/Locking) and Ray Basa (House Dance). These individuals teach every Wednesday and Friday at SIPA from 5pm-6:30pm. Young Lovers Young Lovers is a four-piece instrumental rock band formed in 2011. Consisting of Mikey Macapagal and Jonathan Higa on guitar, Josh Solomon on bass, and Ford Crispino on drums, they have played in and around Los Angeles since 2012. They have also previously played FPAC 2013 in San Pedro.

Clarisse was born and raised in the Philippines. She moved to California because of love at age 34. Coming from a family of artists, Clarisse is mostly selftaught and naturally passionate with her art. Her main focus is making Filipiniana and Baybayinthemed artwork with coffee and other nontraditional stains like wine and tea. She signs her work in Baybayin as “Kináng” and is currently working on a series called “Biak: Explorations of Filipino Heritage, Identity, Immigration and Assimilation”.

Francis Gumayagay

I am a self-taught published fashion photographer born and raised in the Philippines. My interest in photography started from editing photos while I am taking my business degree in Manila. I started taking portraits when I moved to Los Angeles. In 2011, I got into fashion photography when a wardrobe stylist asked me to do my first fashion editorial shoot, which also gave me my first magazine published work. My recent collaboration with Filipino fashion designer Veejay Floresca landed on one of the pages of British Vogue September 2014 issue. I am currently based in Los Angeles, CA.

Cristina Rose

Grand-daughter of Concepcion of Cebu and Priscilla of New Mexico, Dr. Cristina Rose (Smith) was born in LA and earned her doctorate in SF. As an artist, she speaks to her Xicana-Pinay-indigenous multiplicity in the sacred mango. Cristina recently accepted a faculty position in the Women’s Studies program at CSUDH.

Diyan Valencia

d.i.y.an is a Pilipino-Angeleno, selftaught multi-media artist, musician, and community organizer. Her artwork uses creation as a way of finding freedom from inner pains & colonial traumas. She recreates “folk art” and reimagines indigenius & ancestral art as part of her healing process, decolonization and reconnection with ancestors and her native roots.

Freyen Santiago

Freyen Santiago lives and paints in his studio in Los Angeles. His subjects include cartoonish/ pseudo-caricature and pop figures which he transforms into social/ philosophical/surreal characters,

symbols and/or themes. His other art works contain only abstract themes of everyday objects, which he then romanticizes. Freyen received his master’s degree in Public Policy from the University of Southern California and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of the Philippines. He is a self-taught artist who has been passionate about art since a child and is now working on his aspiration to make it big in the art scene. He has channeled his interests, education and experience to give depth and meaning to his art through socio-political, philosophical and random (sometimes radical) thoughts and concepts. The artist welcomes the opportunity to work with collectors, art galleries and auction houses for any projects or opportunities to create, exhibit and/or sell art.

Currently working towards his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration at California State University, Long Beach, Gerald plans on receiving his Master of Fine Arts. Previously working as the Co-Director of Publicity in CSULB’s Queers and Allies Club, he hopes to reconnect with and contribute to his Fil-Am community that has given him so much.

Born and raised in the Bay Area, Onedr is a DJ and graffiti artist painting for Filipino Street Art. Onedr is a self-taught artist, whose style comes from being “babysat by a television” as a child. His style is inspired by Jim Henson’s muppets, cartoons like Ren n’ Stimpy, and Bay Area street artist Twist One. Filipino Street Art The Filipino Street Art Project is a documentary-based transmedia project that aims to explore and spread Philippine culture by sharing the stories of Manila’s street artists. In addition to a feature-length film, we host live art events and educational programs across the US and Philippines.

Robert J. Sison was born in the Philippines in the city of Mandaluyong in Metro Manila, at the age of 10 years old his family immigrated to Calgary, Alberta in Canada. Determined to prove misconceptions wrong, Robert found a renewed interest in the history, traditions and culture of the land he just left behind. With great response and feedback to the art he donated, Robert was inspired to share the knowledge, and help in the revival of this amazing part of Pre-Filipino culture.

I was born in the Philippines. My family moved to the U.S. when I was 6 years old. Since tagalog was my first language spoken, communication with the ‘new world’ was one of the challenges I aimed to overcome and achieve. Drawing and painting had since been a way to express and postively connect to those around me.

Formally studied theology, architecture, political science, education, etc. at Philippine colleges and graduate schools. The Saysay Project is a community-sourced documentation project by FilAm ARTS that aims to capture the diverse experiences in the Filipino diaspora through storytelling.

Welcome to the Senior’s Village! It is the perfect place for seniors to relax and enjoy food and music. The Senior’s Village features:

“Saysay” (pronounced sigh-sigh) is a Tagalog word that has a double meaning: to have intrinsic value and to declare. This project aims to engage the community to tell their stories, and to document and preserve these shared stories for future generations. The purpose of the project is twofold: 1) To highlight the contributions of Filipinos to U.S. life and culture - from the early waves of migration: labor workers in agriculture, fisheries, and people in military service; to professionals i.e. nurses, teachers, doctors, accountants, and others. 2) To connect these stories of American experience to the stories in the Philippines.

The 15th Annual Vegetable Growing Competition and Exhibits Home to the 15th Annual Vegetable Growing Competition and Exhibits, the Senior’s Village shows off the largest vegetables you have ever seen such as ampalaya (bitter melon), kalabasa (Japanese pumpkin), talong (eggplant), sitaw (Chinese long bean), patola (luffa), and upo (bottle gourd). Inspired by tales of giant vegetables from all over the Southland, the vegetable growing competition is something you do not want to miss! Vegetable Market The Senior’s Village also sells different Filipino vegetables to satisfy the appetite of the attendees for fresh vegetables grown at both community and home gardens.

Filipino Cultural School Filipino Cultural School is a Summer program that has been imple-

mented since 1965. It incorporates language, dance, music, history, and Filipino lifestyle in order to educate its students. FCS creates a sense of Filipino pride and identity, while providing a space of community through relationships and identifying oneself.

Dorian Merina (Saturday 5 PM-6 PM): Journalist, poet and author Dorian Merina hails from Los Angeles by way of the Philippines and New York. He recently returned back to L.A. from the Philippines where he was studying and documenting an indigenous poetry, called Laji, on the Batanes Islands. He's thrilled to be part of the Saysay Project and learning more about the rich history of Filipinos in L.A.! Florante Ibanez (Sunday 1 PM-2 PM): Florante Peter Ibanez is the Manager of Library Computer Services at Loyola Law School and also an adjunct professor at Loyola Marymount University. He received his MLIS and MA in Asian American Studies from UCLA in 2006. He was a past president of Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) from 2010-2011. He also served on the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC 2012) Steering Committee. He recently was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to the California Library Services Board. Florante has been married to Rose Estepa Ibanez for 40 years and together co-authored their book "Filipinos in Carson and the South Bay". He has also served on the boards of SIPA, FilAm ARTS, and the Filipino American Library.

ESKUWELA KULTURA YOUTH PAVILION to young festival-goers. The pavilion hosts children’s dance workshops, teaching traditional dances and modern styles like hip-hop as well as arts & crafts such as face painting and drawings. Saysay Salon Facilitators include: Giovanni Ortega (Saturday 1 PM-2 PM): Giovanni Ortega is an author/performer who took the literary artist category for FPAC Pahayag Project for the most sought after author with his first book, Leaves from the Silverlake Barrio, in 2013. As a playwright, he wrote ALLOS, the story of Carlos Bulosan which was commissioned by East West Players Theater and toured all over Southern California in 2011. During the same time, East West Players included an excerpt of his work in a touring show called “Our American Voice”. He has just returned from a North American tour with Playfair, a one-person show that incorporates motivational speaking, diversity engagement, and improv. Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture @ Grand Park

HISTORY FilAm ARTS traces its roots to the production of the ANNUAL Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC) first conceptualized in 1990 as part of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department’s Festivals Program, an arts program designed to address the multicultural constituency of the city. Organized by about 100 artists and community leaders, the first FPAC has only grown stronger and bigger, moving to Cabrillo Beach in 1994, then to Pt. Fermin Park in the historic district of San Pedro in 2001, and now finally at Grand Park, Los Angeles. Today FPAC is the largest presenter of Philippine arts and culture in Southern California presenting over 1200 artists in 9 disciplines and attracting over 25,000 audience members from all over the country. FPAC is still a grassroots and community-led effort, produced by a core group of 50 volunteer professionals, in collaboration with 50 community based and civic organizations, and involving over 400 volunteers.

1990 Responding to the 1990 Census, the City of L.A. establishes the Cultural Affairs Department to deal with the growing multicultural constituency of the city. To address Filipino American community visibility, the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs initiates dialogues with Filipino American artists and stakeholders and artists to discuss the creation of a Filipino cultural festival for purposes of showcasing little-known and little-seen Filipino arts and culture. 1991 Opening ritual for the Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture at the Frank Lloyd Wright estate in Malibu, CA with world-renowned installation artist Roberto Villanueva. 1992 The L.A. Riots break out after the Rodney King beating in the aftermath of the L.A. Riots, festival organizers move forward and the Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC) debuts on May 9, 1992, Mother’s Day, at the Los Angeles Community College (LACC). At the onset, FPAC was a comprehensive multi-disciplinary presentation with: traditional and contemporary music, dance, literary readings, plus a film on the Philippne eagle hosted by Lea Salonga. Filipino films screen at the 7th Los Angeles Asian Pacific American Film Fest. 1993 UGAT PHILIPNO Filipino Roots Historical Tribute to Grandmasters 1994 A Collective Voice The City of L.A. transitions the leadership of FPAC to the

community organizers. Due to increased demand, FPAC becomes a two-day event and moves to Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. Premiere of Philippine-based artists Joey Ayala at ang Bagong Lumad at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. Interactive Rice Planting exhibit debuts. Literary program “Bigkasan” premieres.

River Center. The L.A. Times features the inaugural FPAC Vegeetable Competition in a news article: “What’s Upo in Los Angeles?” FPAC features the 1st all-women literary program, “Pinaysistas Speak.” FilAm ARTS co-presents the Palm d’Or award-winning film short: “Anino” by Raymond Red.

University of the Philippines’ Kasarinlan music group premieres at Barnsdall Art Park to a sold-out house. 1996 ANG PAGSILANG/The Birth FPAC becomes part of the acclaimed “Summer Nights at the Ford” (Amphitheatre) series with the premiere of “La Revolucion Filipina” by the world-renowned Ballet Philippines. 1997 TUNGO SA LIWANAG/Towards the Light FPAC organizers and community stakeholders go through a two-year strategic planning process. 2001 SAMPUNG TAON SANGAPULO TAOEN NAPULO KA TUNG/ Celebrating 10 Years As FilAm ARTS expanded its vision, it was soon recognized as the emerging leader in Filipino arts and culture, and was chosen by the California Arts Council, to develop and maintain the statewide Pilipino Artists Network. FPAC turns 10, and moves to the larger Pt. Fermin Park with headliners: Latin Soul legend Joe Bataan and Philippine popular R&B singer Ella Mae Saison.

1998 KALAYAAN/Freedom FPAC produces “Landas ng Kalayaan – the Road to Freedom” for the 1898 – 1998 Centennial of Philippine Independence. 2002 PAGDADALANG-SINING/Nurturing the Arts Going STATEWIDE: The Pilipino Artists Network was one of the co-founders the California Cultural Alliance, a coalition of multicultural arts networks that led the statewide arts advocacy efforts for communities of color after a devastating 94% arts funding cut in the state of California. The Pilipino Artists Network reaches 600 artists in 8 disciplines.

2003 HARMONY Going NATIONWIDE: with its participation in the Ford Foundation’s initiatives: Connect the Arts for Asian Pacific Islander arts organizations in the U.S., the Pilipino American Performing Arts Initiative, and the Hip Hop Summit. Going INTERNATIONAL: FilAm ARTS authors the CA-Philippines Cultural Exchange Agreement in a meeting with President Gloria M. Arroyo. FPAC film component, Pinoyvisions, expands to six programs, VC, USC, online, and a twilight screening at FPAC. Latin Soul legend Joe Bataan returns to headline along with Filipino pop star, Rachel Alejandro, direct from Manila. Katipunan Poetry Slam This is not your average poetry reading. This is where poets come to do battle! Continuing the work of those who have paved the way before us, from Jose Rizal to Jessica Hagedorn, the slam provides a platform for us to showcase the variety of voices and points of view amongst Filipinos and Filipino-Americans today. Come witness this modern day balagtasan and see who will come out on top to win the $300 cash prize!

The Philippine culture is strongly rooted in oral traditions. From the age-old tula and balagtasan to modern forms of poetry and prose, the Literary Arts at FPAC will celebrate the importance of the written and spoken word in our community. Join us for performances and readings, writing/performance workshops, contribute to the collective poem on our poetry wall, peruse our open air library, and witness the reestablishment of the poetry slam at FPAC. There is no limit to what we can do with our words. Now, the community will hear us!

Sunday, October 5, 2014 at 2:30pm at the Legacy Stage The Tinikling Battle is a fierce competition among some of the best Tinikling dancers within the Southern California area. The teams work hard to showcase their own unique styles, as well as incorporate the traditional Filipino styles into their choreography. The dances represent the Filipino culture and how it has eveolved throughout generations while still keeping traditional aspects. Teams have the opportunity to display their creativity and talents while representing their respective organizations.

1. Cherisse Yanit Nadal Cherisse Yanit Nadal is a Southern California writer who is currently in attendance at The University of California Riverside for her MFA in writing. She’s been published in Oatmeal Magazine, is a 2013 VONA alum, and has served for two years as an acquisitions editor at Kaya Press. 2. Arianna Basco Writer, performer, producer. Host of Speakeasy at The Last Bookstore. Author of Palms Up. Mom, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. 3. Rozlind Silva A seventeen year old poet born and raised in the Los Angeles county. She is currently attending Nogales High School and has been performing poetry for almost two years. She is not only a youth poet from Say Word, but also one of Los Angeles’ Youth Poet Ambassadors.

16. Dante Basco Dante Basco is a Hollywood actor who has become a cult classic and pioneering figure in Asian American cinema. A young man of many talents, Dante is the founder of on e of the largest weekly poetry venue in the country, “Da Poetry Lounge” in Los Angeles.

10. Janice L. Sapigao Janice L. Sapigao is a Pinay writer and educator from San Jose, CA. Her work has been published in Quaint Magazine, the anthology Empire of Funk: Hip Hop and Representation in Filipina/o America,TropMag.com and AngryAsianMan.com, among others. She co-founded an open mic in Los Angeles called Sunday Jump. 11. David Lazaro David Lazaro, also known by the stage names Cyphaflip and Kuya Cyph, has been performing spoken word since 2005. In college, he joined the Haraka Writers spoken word troupe and continues to pursue spoken word as a hobby. Because of his background in hiphop, David favors a rhyme-centric delivery.

5. Sherwin Ginez Ginez’s been performing poetry since 2009 and was a 2013 and 2014 San Diego Grand Slam Finalist and the 2013 San Diego City College Slam Champion. His poetry reflects the world he lives in inside and outside of himself; always leaving a piece of him on every stage he touches.

12. Bel Poblador She is a Los Angeles native, writer, and editor who livesand creates in San Francisco. She received her Writing MFA from CalArts in 2013. She was an editor for Best of Trop and is currently managing editor of TAYO Literary Magazine. Bel is a rock that holds the ocean.

6. Jerrica Escoto She was on the 2010 & 2013 San Diego Slam Team and was a finalist at the 2011 Women of the World Poetry Slam where she ranked 12th in the world. She released her first book of poetry with fellow poet, Gill Sotu, entitled “How to Love Gods and Acrobats.

13. Michael Nailat Michael Nailat, AKA waxstyles, started collecting records before he even owned a turntable, and has no plans on stopping now. He is the Resident DJ for Tuesday Night Cafe in Little Tokyo, and is the founder of Sessions, a youth DJ and music production workshop centered in Historic Filipinotown.

8. Lorenz Mazon Dumuk Lorenz Mazon Dumuk is an alumni of VONA/ Voices, and was a member of the 2014 San Jose Slam Team, and is currently in the Silicon Valley based program MALI (Multicultural Arts Leadership Institute). He has two collections of

poetry slam win on a local Los Angeles urban radio station in the late ‘90s. She has worked in the labor movement for over 15 years.

9. Jay “J.Bayani” Eusantos Jay Eusantos is a poet and emcee who currently resides in Long Beach, California. He was born in the Philippines and has experienced a majority of his life as a 1.5 generation Filipino-American. He is an organizer with KmB, Pro-people Youth. He graduated from CSULB with a B.A. in Asian American Studies.

4. Brian “SuperB” Oliva Brian “SuperB” Oliva is an accomplished writer, and spoken word artist ,with a touch of r&b and soul. Through his love of the art and community, he travels as a performer, advocate, and mentor, sharing and conducting workshops to enrich the art.

7. Journey of a Brown Girl The “Journey of a Brown Girl” is an experimental theatre movement that seeks to create a space for self inquiry around wom*n’s identity and issues and brings them to light through the narrative of Pinay (Filipino Wom*n).

17. Joe Limer Born in Hawaii, Limer is the 2012, 2013, and 2014 Long Beach Poetry Slam Champion. As a member of San Diego’s slam team in 2012 and 2013, he finished fourth in the world and has toured in schools in San Diego, Hawaii, Pittsburgh, DC, West Virginia, and Virginia. 18. Traci Kato-Kiriyama Traci kato-kiriyama is a nationally-touring writer/ actor/educator and community organizer. She has facilitated art+activism, community building and creative writing & storytelling workshops throughout the country since 1998. She is also the co-founder and director of the Tuesday Night Project, presenter of the Tuesday Night Cafe series. 19. Alison De La Cruz Alison De La Cruz is a multi-disciplinary theater artist and cultural organizer. She is a Community Organizer in the Artistic Department at the Pasadena Playhouse. Background of Balangay ng Langit: A “Balangay Ng Langit” translates to canoe of the sky. It is a ceremonial canoe altar that has been created in acknowledgement to honor Filipino ancestors and the victims of typhoon Yolanda.

“Ang Pagmamahal Ay... (Love Is...)” Documentary: Barangay Los Angeles is proud to premiere “Ang Pagmamahal Ay... (Love Is...)”, an unscripted short program on what “love is”. Love is something we have all experienced, with a person, place, thing, entity or the love of ourself. Undefined by who or how we love, love is something we share and is within us all.

Mamerto Tindongan’s work includes abstract and semi-abstract in functional and/or decorative forms. Often, the designs are one of a kind as the artist works in communion with the wood. He allows the shape, size, grain, and other characteristics of the wood to guide him in uncovering the final form.

Guro Jason Inay (Curator) Guro Jason Inay started training at the age of six in 1979. After the sudden death of his father last year, Jason assumed the position of Suro as his father wanted. Jason is now the Head of Inayan Eskrima and is the foremost proponent of Inayan. Nick Papadakis (Curator) Currently, Nick Papadakis is a Tuhon in Pekiti Tirsia Kali and a full instructor in Dog Brothers martial arts. Under the leadership of Joel Jacinto, Barbara Ele and Ave Jacinto, Kayamanan is committed to presenting, promoting and preserving the richness and diversity of Philippine culture through dance and music, to educate, entertain and enlighten. Notable performance include Magkaugnay: the Interconnectedness of Philippine Culture through Music and Dance of 2008 and the 2013 Music of the Philippines Lecture Demonstration at the University of California San Diego’s International Student Center. Sampaguita Youth Dance Troupe; Carson, CA The Sampaguita Youth Dance Troupe’s mission is to promote Philippine culture and hearitage through performing arts. The South Bay-based organization started 17 years ago. Its founders met through the Sampaguita Women’s Circle, Inc. annual summer cultural school. They enjoyed the fellowship that came with learning and performing that they decided they wanted to do it throughout the year. This non-profit organization has opened its doors to youths of other cultures - some of who have been amongst the senior members.

BIBAK Dance Emsemble; Los Angeles, CA The BIBAK Dance Ensemble was established in 1989 by BIBAK Los Angeles. BIBAK is an acronym for the 5 major hilltribes of the Cordillera mountain region of Northern Luzon, Philippines, collectively known as Igorots. The Ensemble seeks to promote, preserve and perpetuate the native arts in the traditional ways.

Malaya Filipino American Dance Arts; North Hills/Santa Clarita Malaya Filipino American Dance Arts (Malaya) is a Los Angeles based performing group created to educate and interpret renditions of Philippine history and culture through the art of dance. In Tagalog, malaya means “to be free” and the root word alay means “to offer or pay tribute to”. Malaya represents the freedom to choose our identity as Filipino Americans embracing our ancestral and present culture. Malaya is dedicated to the enrichment and artistic practice of traditional folk dance in a new and inspiring way for future generations.

Rocksteady Rondalla; Los Angeles, CA Rocksteady Rondalla, formed in 2010 , is a group of musician friends hailing from the Souther California cities of Buena Park, Torrance, Long Beach, Lancaster, Diamond Bar, and Los Angeles. With no formal training, the group initially started as an experiment to see if casual musicians would be able to grasp and perform Philippine Cultural Music. Inspired and influenced by Rondalla Club of Los Angeles, Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble, and other renown musicians in the country, Rocksteady Rondalla has had the honor of providing the cultural music for numerous PCN’s in the Souther California area. Some schools include CSU Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona, USC, and Troy High School. A few of the founders were alumni at CSULB. In addition to traditional folk dance music, Rocksteady also experiments with contemporary pieces in the Rondalla format.

Rondalla Club of Los Angeles (RCLA) was formed in 1991 in Los Angeles through the concerted efforts of the late Nitoy Gonzales, former Maestro of the famed Bayanihan Dance Company from the Philippines, Leonilo “Boy” Angos— also a former member of Bayanihan, son of Nitoy Gonzales—and Tagumpay “Pi” M. de Leon, son of the late Philippine composer and national artist, Felipe Padilla de Leon. In partnership with longtime member Patrick Tanega, RCLA was established as a non-profit organization in 2008, strengthening its role as a resource to the community. Kulintronica; San Francisco, CA Ron Quesada is a musician on a mission to make the “kulintang” a household name. By fusing this ancient Filipino gong instrument with modern electronic dance music, Ron has created a sound all his own that he calls “Kulintronica”. With tracks on iTunes and a new single coming out on King Street Sounds called “Release Me,” Kulintronica concludes his Summer Tour 2014 after performing in Honolulu, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Kansas City, and New York, with a special Filipino History Month set at FPAC in Downtown Los Angeles!

Curator Information: Mark A Hermogeno: Mark has been involved in Philippine Folk Dance on and off for the past 25 years. He first participated in FPAC as a dancer with the Fil-Am Family Cultural Group for a number of years starting at the age or 13. Throughout the years he has danced, taught and choreographed with and for student organizations from Bravo Medical Magnet High School in Los Angeles to the Bayanihan Student Organization of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the Filipino American Student Association at California State University Northridge. Mark currently is a dancer with Historic Filipinotown based Kayamanan Ng Lahi and is a residential interior designer.
