SOCIAL SERVICE FACILITY DÚBRAVSKÁ HLAVICA
senior sanctuary
The aim of this Social service facility will be to connect the elderly with their peers and to help them enjoy the rest of their lives.
dĂşbravskĂĄ hlavica
bratislava
Site for the Social service facility is situated in a sierra Male Karpaty, which brings the elderly back from the city into the natural environment. 8
The project of the Social service facility tried to combine a House for the elderly and an Alzheimer centre.
First thing my consultant told me: “When designing a social service facility, you should definitely focus on the concept of a room.
After a long research I decided to use 2 concepts of rooms which were designed by british scientists. One will be used for the House of the elderly and the other for the Alzheimer centre.
9
So I got the rooms figured out, only thing left was their setup. I turned my attention to old villages/towns and the way they were built.
Started with a linear setup

A-H-O-O-Y
One of my main goals was to put the elderly and alzheimer patients into the natural environment in its greatest extent. This way the elders can return back in time to their roots (young years spent in countryside) and the treatment for alzheimer patients can be enhanced by the greenery.

“AUTOFOCUS” PAVILLION - BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
personality experiment
Oxford dictionary:
AUTOFOCUS noun a device focusing a camera or other piece of equipment automatically. [mass noun] the facility for automatic focusing: these pictures were shot with the help of autofocus
Architecture tutors:
AUTOFOCUS
verb to concentrate on yourself, to get to know yourself and your limits, to get intensively more aware of the surroundings.
So the assignement is to create a pavillion that would operate within the AUTOFOCUS theme in a given space.
5,7m
26,2
5m
To make it materially clean, EUROPALETTES were chosen.
dimensions of 800 mm x 1200 mm x 140 mm. 18
Around 3000 palettes would be needed to fill the whole space.
Extremely enormous if your budget is
Final proposal consists of 3 main parts - the first tower, artificial landscape and the second tower. Each part is designed to have a different effect on the visitor and thus touch many aspects of his personality. To make the pavillion more poetic, 3 parts were turned into 3 chapters.
is anybody out there? scary !!!
19
chapter i: ANXIETY
Anxiety is a feeling that we have tried to achieve in the design of the inlet section of the pavilion. A very narrow corridor leading along the wall and into the built-up pallet tower in which the path is dark and claustrophobic. This section was designed as an AUTOFOCUS of the individual, whereas visitor recognizes himself thanks to overcoming of unpleasant situations.
chapter ii: FREEDOM
Freedom is a feeling that will overwhelm you if you pass the first part of the pavilion and get to the artificial landscape. The middle part of the pavilion is conceived as a "free space" for a visitor in which various activities such as wandering around, sitting or meditation can take place. In this part, AUTOFOCUS of the individual as well as of groups is developed. The landscape formes some sort of luminous calm lake where people can contemplate and possibly relax and focus on themselves. 20
chapter iii: DISAPPOINTMENT
Disappointment and frustration are part of a game that’s played with the visitor. After passing through the first two parts of the pavilion visitor sees another tower in which he expects similar scenario or story as that played in the first tower. However, what follows is a disappointment of a blind corner at the end of the second tower. It is on the visitor how he handles such situation. AUTOFOCUS will thus be taking place while walking through the tower, as well as in a blind corner or during a way back to the artificial landscape. unfortunately despite a perfect concept
not enough palettes palettes of various sizes
Due circumstances, only chapter II tower and a part of chapter I tower were built. We decided to omit artificial landscape and replace it with a clean space that as we later found out was very dull and boring. However, we found out that the chapter III tower worked during the day exactly as we imagined and after a skillfull instalation of lighting inside the tower, it has become a major attraction of the pavilion at night. play of light and shadow captivated us. 21
so the existing setup is
This space is a problem It’s simply BORING
I don’t want to build anything else to interfere with the former concept
I will work with the walls Play of light and shadow was interesting in the towers So I’ll enhance that a little bit basic concept
before
day
night
For my intervention I have chosen to paint the electrical wiring on the walls. Black color was chosen to cover the wiring during the day. I painted a rectangular stripe with a width of 25 cm on the wiring. These stripes completely conceal the wires and create interesting figures on the walls. The wires are covered on purpose as I wanted to attract the attention of people, who were curious what was under the paint and why only the selected areas were painted. Closer look at the black stripes initiated people to touching the walls and feeling the wires with their hands. Black color was also chosen as an imitation of a burned out cable. Day = death of the wire. 22
stripes
black stripes
At night, when darkness is everywhere, such a disguise did not work and so I decided to paint on the fringes of the black stripes a thin stripe with a glow in the dark color. This strategy proved to be successful, as when the lights turned off, the space was transformed into an industrial high-tech and caused the element of surprise. The shapes on the walls reminded Matrix. Night = life of a wire.
