A challenging, engaging and experimental process took us through 6 months of a competition where architects and coopérateurs met, exchanged ideas and developed new strategies. Following a master plan for Vergers, we were invited to propose a design for 2 new buildings, which would house both cooperatives,
catalyse personal contact and social exchange. Our idea set off from an external element designed as a unifying theme for the whole project. This element is a three-dimensional green mesh that connects the Jura park to the two new buildings : it spreads over the common central garden and then climbs the south façades of each volume. All these areas, low as prairies or high as vertical gardens, are part of that answer and a very demanding exterior spaces program. In terms of indoor living, a thorough proposition of common rooms and shared utility spaces are intricated among the habitats. Some of them are located in privileged spots, such as by the main street, enjoying the village life, or on the roof, overlooking the rural landscape. A tight frame of duplex apartments is distributed transversely across the building, conveying a high typological flexibility as well as the option of personalising each apartment, from the open loft to the private partitioning.

Energetically speaking, the vertical green façade is designed as a seasonal filter – a passive method for controlling energy gains. It is strictly made out of flower boxes spread over the balconies, which then are linked by a mesh of steel cables where plants can crawl onto. The diagonality of the building’s front also dynamises a watering system: rainwater caught on reserves in the rooftop is easily distributed to all areas. The buildings’ primary structure uses recycled concrete and the façade’s cladding is made of local wood. 500m2 of solar panels plus 800m2 of photovoltaic panels distributed over both rooftops ensure the production of hot water during the summer and meet the energy standards set by the Minergie P & Minergie A.

The project is the meeting of an exceptional site with the needs of the inhabitants of the Espérance, the healers, the families and the visitors. Articulated around an axis, the project integrates the new requirements, dialogues with the existing village and adds new dimensions to this special care institution. The new Health & Care Center building is conceived as a plinth that creates a public terrace in the continuity of the village’s main square and provides a 360° panorama over the Léman, the Alps and the Jura. The two new special housing units, which are part of this volume, are organised around a majestic luminous patio: common areas enjoying this controlled and quiet environment, as the bedrooms enjoy the calming views of the landscape.

On the other hand, the renewed Workshops buildings discreetly complete the surrounding setting of rows of housing units. The specific use of these workshops finds a legitimacy in the pivot position of the « Intermediary Workshop », orientated specifically towards the lake. This allows us to glance at the major axis of collective exterior spaces, which succeed one after another : the sports field, the Louis Duchet square and the balcony over the lake.

The project is designed to have a short construction span, in order to limit daily life nuisances to the inhabitants. The strategy being a two-step construction involving a concrete plinth that reuses most of the existing foundations and an upper construction in prefabricated wood panels (KHL type), quickly set on site. These are Minergielabelled buildings : sustainable, modular, functional and a reminder of the wooden constructions of the region.

main road, reaffirming it as an important constructed axis; only to pause in front of the school’s entrance and bring a new identity to the place: a shielded, mineral public area / as opposed to the meaningless empty space before. The project creates two new well defined spaces: the passing street and the rescued, calmer ROUTE DE MEYRIN courtyard – a square, a school and a park. Also, the future sequence of small shops, activities or points of access to the apartments reinforces the public character of the building on its façade towards the main street; and promotes a lively atmosphere to the outside. A folding of the façade allows to open up the perspective towards the school’s entrance and, at the same time, to favour the link to the village’s heart. PLAN REZ-DE-CHAUSSEE

Bernex, Genéve Aigues-Vertes Foundation 700m2 Housing + 1’300m2 Activities 7’300m3
Aigues-Vertes is a village in the Geneva rural area completely dedicated to hosting a community of mentally handicapped people, who are socially, culturally and economically active. An old and unsafe theatre needs to be totally
demolished, because a new main structure is required, with a dual nature: a multipurpose unit - which will house a multipurpose hall along with several workshops; and a housing unit - especially developed for seniors. Our proposal formally differentiates the two uses (multipurpose and housing) by way of two cubic volumes without, however, completely separating them. This resonates with the village’s scale as well as multiplies views over the landscape. Both units are connected through a plinth that mimics an ancient wall which delimits the plot. It is in fact , one compact building, that focuses on energy management - Lucido clading pannels - as well as on exterior spaces : green, ludic and public areas.

Situated along the Boiron forest line, this project looks for permeability – as an invitation to the enjoyment of nature and a real link between outer-urban spaces and nature. A succession of terraces and gardens, plants and pergolas, structure the ground; they are brought alive through a set of appropriable spaces for the coopérateurs and accessible by the residents – marketplace, renewal centre, vegetable gardens, play areas, small ponds, benches… All buildings offer a vast range of collective spaces (common rooms, laundries, play areas, meeting areas, and workshops) appropriable to one’s liking and needs; among other places like shops and small offices. The project minimises horizontal distribution, given that CAVE most apartments are S duplexes. A structured façade allows for diversity in typology and a north/south orientation allows, in most cases, for double-orientated east/ west apartments. Simplexes are fully accessible by handicapped people. The materials applied are Minergie-ECO certified and low in grey energy (local wood, recycled concrete, recycled pavements, etc.). Façades are Niveaux -3 (+408.00) coated in natural rough-cast, light toned. Niveaux -4 (+405.00) Either green roofs or solar panels (hot water production) cover the entire rooftop area. A central heating system fuelled by native wood (delivered by local sawmills – an abundant and renewable energy) ensures all the neighbourhood’s needs. SALLE COMMUNE

Lx Factory - Urban Design in Alcântara, Lisbon Final project for Masters in Architecture October 2010 / February 2011
context This project was ground for my thesis and it portraits a flexibility of work scales that were imperative given the context in hand, the Alcântara valley, in Lisbon. Firstly, it was essential to work on a macro scale, for this valley constitutes one of the conurbation’s preferential passage corridors. Secondly, it was as important to work on a micro scale, given that the internal urban tissue in Alcântara is multiply dilacerated and isolated by these infrastructural axis. Also, the latent proximity between downtown Alcântara and the Tejo’s riverbanks was considered a great opportunity to the designing of new public space programmes which should, once again, reunite these contexts.

Urban plan - scale 1:15000
The project’s nature is thus constantly shifting between architectonic and urban scales and hence the theme of my investigation being the object-city and the notion of the urban surface as an integrated plan which embodies built structures, green spaces or empty spaces - varying from public to private domains. The design comes from the idea of a low and dense structure which is able to reconnect multiple historical tissues. Through a very permeable ground floor, it joins various programmes and serves as mediator between transition spaces and permanence ones. Private spaces would be found on an upper floor, a layer designed through the unfolding of the ground surface, as to favor a sense of one plan alone. The programmatic interrelationship between this project and the Lx Factory (a creative organism which is found next to the project site) is toned-down by a layout that mends an historical tissue and that works as a catalyst for the integration of other social tissues. Three main programmatic focuses standout: housing, work spaces and mobility (the later includes the new Alcântara-Mar railway station).

Building on the Built: The Object-City as an Urban Surface Design Master Thesis in Architecture 2011/2012
Abstract
Object-city’s issue is summarized in an organizational notion that deals with tangible problems regarding its urban context. Its link between form, program and organization brings a good feedback facing nowadays’ demands: land-use efficiency, uncertain conditions in size or shape, spatial flexibility, programmatic complexity and relation to context. The object-city thrives in the activation of multiple cores, its side-by-side aggregation and connection among spaces, positively defining itself as an urban operative. It corroborates the prospect of relational space design, as well as the design of city limits and urban sprawl areas, conveying a direct association to the notion of frontier. This way, it expresses architecture’s ongoing proximity to an urban and landscape dimension and the gradual linkage between structure (building) and infrastructure (context). Brazilian’s brutalist architecture’s legacy widens the range of the question put by means of a vision that straitens the barrier between building and urban design, through the expression of a dense urban surface. In the brutalist’s case, this vision is imprinted on the design of its surfaces, interdependent and antagonic among them: the ground design and the ceiling design. The goals of this investigation concern the analysis of a case study, practiced on an urban fragment located in Alcântara, Lisbon. The potential of this strategy is best confirmed on situations as this: it consists of an urban landscape pointed out by the irregularity of its tissue, caused by the predominance of infrastructure throughout its valley, and the punctuation of big urban voids, which resulted from the industrial recession of the late 20th century. Such study faces the chance to performance as an urban catalyst, opposing the propensity of isolated social tissues in Alcântara, as well as providing a direct path linking the consolidated city to the riverbank, which has long been extinguished.
Key-Words Object-City; Urban Surface; Ground Design; Ceiling Design; Infrastructure; Alcântara.
