President Aquino Turns Emotional on 5th SONA

MANILA, Philippines – Faced with three impeachment complaints, Disbursement Allocation Program (DAP) controversy, and low public approval ratings, President Benigno Aquino III turned emotional as he delivers his fifth State of the Nation Address recently.

people of his dad’s famous words, “the F i l i p i n o people is worth dying for,” which he further added with “the Filipinos are worth living for,” and “the Filipinos are worth fighting for.” Administration’s Achievements Aquino, in his speech that lasted 90 minutes, lengthily spoke about his administration’s achievements for the last year citing a decline in poverty rate from 27.9% in first semester of 2012 to 24.9% of the same period in 2013; the allotment of bigger budget for infrastructure amounting to Php 200.3 billion in 2011 to Php 404.3 billion in 2014; 22% increase in collection by the Bureau of Customs from January to April 2014 amounting to Php 117 billion; and the scholarship programs the government initiated among others. “Now: the problems we inherited, we have solved. The problems that are here today, we are solving. And the problems that are still on the horizon, we are preparing for. I believe with your continued trust, we can solve all of these,” Aquino said. Aquino has also emphasized that his leadership will end in 2016 and took the opportunity to urge the Filipino people to choose the rightful leaders who will continue the

n the latter part of his speech, Aquino spoke about his second lease in life, his reluctance to accept the offer of presidency, his parents and their legacy, and how he would make it a point that the Filipino people can see the good change that his administration has strived to do in his four years in the office. “When some groups appealed to me to run for President, they told me that they did not expect to solve all the country’s problems in a span of six years. They simply asked me to begin the change. You saw where we came from, and you are seeing how we have far surpassed the aspirations with which we began. “To my Bosses: You gave me an opportunity to lead our efforts to transform society. If I had said “no” when you asked me to take on this challenge, then I could just as well have said that I would help prolong your suffering. I cannot do that in good conscience. “If I had turned my back on the opportunity, then I might as well have turned my back on my father and mother, and all the sacrifices they made for all of us; that will not happen. On our journey along the straight path, you have always chosen what is right and just; you have been true to your promise, and I have been true to all of you,” the President said with a cracked voice. His parents, late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon Aquino, are both Philippine icons who became instruments in toppling the 20-year dictatorship of then President Ferdinand Marcos. Aquino has also reminded the

transformation that he has started. “You are our bosses, you are our strength, you are bringing about change –and so it is you, too, who will continue the task. It is entirely up to you how history will remember this era. They may recall it as the very peak of our triumphs, as a promising start that went to waste. But it would be infinitely better if they remember our achievements as the beginning of a long journey towards the fulfillment of even more ambitious hopes. “To my Bosses: You are behind the transformation we are enjoying. You are the key to continuing all the positive changes we have achieved. I fully believe that, whether I am here or not, the Filipino is headed towards the rightful destination.”

They’ve made only two teleseryes and four movies but it couldn’t be denied that the tandem of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla makes hearts aflutter. Their chemistry is palpable – eliciting screams and shrieks from fans who are tickled pink every time they would see them stare at each other or hold hands onscreen.

T

here is a certain kind of appeal to the masses that only Kathryn and Daniel – or more popularly known as ‘KathNiel” – can bring to the table. Their two romantic light drama series, “Princess and I” and “Got to Believe,” became consistent top-raters while their movies were big hits in the box office. Their latest movie “She’s Dating The Gangster” shown recently proved that their tandem is one of the most bankable love teams in today’s generation raking in Php 15 million on its opening day. In “She’s Dating The Gangster,” Daniel played the role of a tough teenager Kenji while Kathryn played the role of Athena. With circumstances binding them together, Kenji asked Athena to pretend to be his girlfriend to make her ex-girlfriend jealous. The movie, according to Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina, has shown how two can portray immature roles maturely. Though their team is fresh and young, KathNiel – given the right projects and guidance – has what it takes to reach the status of what formidable l o v e teams

such as Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III, Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion, Judy Ann Santos and Piolo Pascual, John Lloyd and Sarah Geronimo have achieved. Daniel, nephew of action star Robin Padilla, started his career in 2010 doing minor roles in “Gimik 2010” and “Growing Up” before replacing Albie Casino in the series “Mara Clara,” which starred Kathryn. Kathryn, on the other hand, has done series of acting shows before she was paired with Daniel in the afternoon series “Princess and I,” which became a hit. Their mother network, ABS-CBN, saw the potential of the team and gave them their first solo movie project entitled “Must Be Love.” Both Kathryn and Daniel are thankful for their fans and supporters who have made their love team a phenomenal success. In turn, the two vowed to hone their acting skills and to work hard to keep the magic of their love team alive. “Before naman importante na sa akin ang craft na ito, pero ngayon siguro mas na-appreciate ko siya. Mas na-realize ko kung gaano siya kaimportante and nag-grow po siguro kaming dalawa,” the 18-year-old actress said in one of her interviews. As to why their love team clicked, Daniel admitted that they are two different persons who care and understand each other. “Kasi magkaiba po kami ni Kathryn sa ugali, sa pag-iisip kung ano ang kailangang gawin. Kasi ako yung parang magulo siya yung maayos. Pero sa ibang bagay siya ako naman ang maayos siya naman ang magulo. Sobrang magkaiba kami kaya sobrang naging compatible yung nakikita,” admitted Daniel. Just like in any other love teams, KathNiel is also being teased by the inevitable question if the tandem will be transformed from reel to real. Although the two has been really close, with Daniel being Kathryn’s escort during her debut party and Kathryn being one of the few invited guests in his house blessing, the young pair are still far from having a romantic relationship offscreen, so they say. “Doon pa rin sa ligawan stage. Ligawan na alam...yung ganun, na alam niyang nililigawan ko siya,”

Daniel said in one of his interviews. When candidly asked where Kathryn is in his heart, Daniel smilingly said, “Nasa gitna.” Whether their pairing is for reel or real, KathNiel is a living proof that love teams will forever be a part of Philippine show business and that the viewing public will never get tired of this kind of formula onscreen.

27th Tokyo International Film Festival To Open With ‘Big Hero 6,’ Close With ‘Parasyte’ ©”Kiseijyu” Seisaku Iinkai

TOKYO, Japan – The 27th T okyo I n t e r n a tio n a l Film Festival (TIFF) will open with the world premiere of Disney’s “Big Hero 6” animation while the Japanese live-action film “Parasyte” will close the fest.

“B

ig Hero 6” is the heartwarming adventure story of Hiro, a 14-yearold robotics prodigy, and a robot called Baymax. The film is set in the fictional metropolis of San Fransokyo (a combination of San Francisco and Tokyo). It will be released by Walt Disney Studio Japan on December 20. “We are thrilled to premiere ‘Big Hero 6’ at the Tokyo International Film Festival; it is truly an honor to be selected as the opening film. The setting of our film, San Fransokyo, is a fictional, futuristic mash-up of two of our favorite cities in the world – San Francisco and Tokyo and the research we did in Tokyo informed every detail of the film. We look forward to bringing our film to this city that so deeply inspired us,” directors Don Hall and Chris Williams said in a statement. 8

©2014 Disney. All Rights Reserved. “Parasyte” is directed by one of Japan’s best filmmakers, Takashi Yamazaki (“Always – Sunset on 3rd Street” and “The Eternal Zero”). The film was adapted from a Japanese comic by Hitoshi Iwaaki that was published in the magazine “Gekkan Afternoon” from 1990 to 1995 and sold 11 million copies. The film will be released by Toho Co., Ltd. on November 29. “We live in troubled times, and ‘Parasyte’ starts a conversation about how the human species will survive. I think it is significant that the film has been selected as the closing film for a major film festival like TIFF,” director Takashi Yamazaki commented. Meanwhile, TIFF Managing Director Nobushige Toshima expressed

his excitement about the upcoming fest. “This is an exciting year for TIFF. Not only we will be showing films in two additional festival venues – Nihonbashi and the Kabukiza theatre in Ginza – we also will be focusing on animation, the most popular content in Japan. The highlights of this year’s festival will be the world premieres of two blockbuster movies, one from Hollywood and one from Japan.” The 27th TIFF will be held October 23-31 at Roppongi Hills, TOHO Cinemas Nihonbashi and other venues in Tokyo. TIFF’s affiliated multi-content market, TIFFCOM2014 (Japan Content Showcase 2014) will take place October 21-23 at the Grand Pacific Le Daiba in the Tokyo Bay area.

OKYO, Japan – The biggest Filipino spectacle in the Land of the Rising Sun has changed its name to “Philippine Festival” as it levels up in its third year in 2014. Called “Barrio Fiesta” for the past two years, the name change came with the restructuring of the organizing committee. The volunteers agreed that it should bear the name of the Philippines to cement its identity in the calendar of annual festivities in Japan. The Festival is set to be held on August 30-31. Along with the change of name, the upcoming festivities will be moved this year to Ueno Park in Tokyo’s Taito Ward, from its previous venue at Yamashita Park

in Yokohama City. The two-day celebration will again showcase cultural dances and songs from the Philippines as well as appearances of well-known Filipino showbiz personalities. The Philippine Festival Organizing Committee is looking to increase the number of food booths to cater to the growing interest in Filipino cuisine. Philippine products will also be featured in the booth exhibits. The Organizing Committee is now communicating with traders and exhibitors who have expressed interest in showcasing Filipino products including handicrafts, clothes and collectible souvenirs. Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manuel M. Lopez has expressed full support to the Philippine Festival Organizing Committee and volunteers. The Embassy of the Philippines extended support for the first and second Barrio Fiestas in Yokohama, as well as Philippine Festivals in Tokyo’s Hibiya Park and Yoyogi Park in 2006 and 2007, respectively. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan likewise provided nominal support for these events. With the new venue, attendance is expected to surpass last year’s 100,000 visitors. Ueno Park is easily accessible by train to people from Tokyo and surrounding prefectures such as Chiba, Gunma, Saitama, Ibaraki and Kanagawa. The participation of Filipinos from these areas is also expected to increase. The Philippine Festival is a project of the Filipino community in Japan, which aims to promote understanding of Philippine culture and friendship between Filipinos and Japanese in the increasingly multi-cultural Japanese society. Proceeds of the event will be donated to charity.

I

t has come to the attention of the Philippine Embassy that there are some people in Japan illegally soliciting donations allegedly for children in the Philippines.

The Philippine Embassy reminds everyone that all fundraising activities should be done in accordance with Japanese law and the relevant regulations of the Prefectures.

The public is requested to exercise caution and judgment when approached by certain people who request donations for some charity organization or activity.

PHILIPPINE ADVENTURES

Southern

Cebu Road Trip Text by Arlene Donaire Photos by Arlene Donaire/Erwin Lim/Michael Ocana

A

Southern road trip offers a unique experience, making one feel like having stepped back in time to the simpler and rustic days of yore. Road travel in a private vehicle is recommended as it allows one to visually take in the scenic route with better management of driving speed and

to make arbitrary stopovers for a parallel food trip. Along the way, there are varied gastronomic offerings that will delight your palates. One inevitably comes across public markets and roadside stores that will pique an interest to taste and even purchase some of the foodstuff for “baon” or “pasalubong.” The

Southern Cebu road tripper’s options include historical, cultural, religious and eco-nature adventures. Depending on the distance one is willing to go, the choices for enjoyment increase. A trip down south of Cebu promises to be a quintessential adventure, complete with sun, sand, sea, shop, and smiles!

On your next vacation to the Queen City of the South, Cebu City, add a new twist to your experience by venturing past the capital’s usual and obvious tourism venues. While Cebu City already offers an exciting range of options for all kinds of tourists – from the sprawling malls that have now evolved into multi-purpose urban family recreational centers; the unique restaurants and eateries of the uptown and downtown areas that offer irresistible fares ranging from the legendary Cebu lechon to fine cuisine; the churches, museums, and other landmarks that represent the city’s special place in Philippine history and culture; and finally, to the pristine beach resorts of neighboring Mactan Island - there are still, countless other possibilities for adventure, depending on one’s inclination, in the southern parts of Cebu Province.

FILJAP MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2014

Southeast bound Km 40: Carcar City, Gateway to the South The City of Carcar, is the usual introductory stop in a trip down south. Declared a city back in 2007 and considered the southern frontier of Metro Cebu, it is very popular among locals and visitors alike, as it is synonymous with the best tasting crackling “chicharon” (pork rind) this side of the Philippines! The City’s central rotunda, which serves as the gateway for all vehicles going and out of the southern Cebu route, is hard to miss. It is also the best place to purchase “baon” and other essentials for the onward trip, as the public market, fast food joints, and convenience stores, are located conveniently around the rotonda.

Southeast bound Km 100: Boljoon, The Heritage Town From Carcar, the drive to Boljoon is a reward in itself as one follows the azure coastal route that passes through the scenic towns of Sibonga, Argao, Dalaguete, and Alcoy. The municipality was recognized as a heritage site twice by national government in 1999, by the National Historical Institute, which declared it a National Historical Landmark; and in 2000, by the National Museum, which declared it as a National Cultural Treasure. The town’s Nuestra Señora de Patrociño Parish Catholic Church, which has a commanding view of the sea at its arched entry is a sight to behold, with its intricately painted ceiling, carvings and bass relief, and beautifully decorated interior. Beside the church is the Escuela Catolica, built in 1940 as an Augustinian school where Boljoon’s children were immersed in the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Southeast bound Km 135: Oslob, The Whale Sharks Habitat Oslob, 135 kilometers from Cebu City and the town next to Boljoon, has become a natural destination for those that seek the thrill of swimming with the whale sharks. Located in Barangay Tanawan, the “habitat” for these gentle creatures, numbering about 30 according to one fisherman guide, is actually only about 1520 meters away from the beachfront/shoreline and is secured by local fisher folks and resort owners and now, supervised by tourism and environment authorities. Best time of day to visit is in the morning when the seawater is still relatively calm and underwater visibility is still clear; by noontime the fisher folks already cease their operations in the area. The whole adventure lasts only between 30 minutes to an hour, so the rest of the time can be spent driving around town.

Southwest bound Km 130: Badian, Eco-trek to Kawasan Falls Upon reaching the Carcar junction, one can also choose to head southwest, via the towns of Barili, Dumanjug, and Moalboal, towards Badian town, where the famous Kawasan Waterfalls are located. It’s hard to miss the entrance to the Kawasan ecopark, because it is just beside the Barangay Matutinao Catholic Church. The Kawasan Falls, located is a series of waterfalls set within lush forest growth; with the largest cascades found at the base (Station 1), reached after hiking for about 1.5 kilometers alongside the Matutinao River and another one (Station 3), located a bit more uphill, reachable after trekking for about 15minutes more. Each cascade has its own natural swimming pool, with blue-green cool waters that can soothe the fatigue from all the trekking.

Rockin’ the Runway for Charity

A mother’s love to fulfill her daughter’s dream of becoming a ramp model was what inspired first time event producer, Erlinda Isomura to put up a unique fashion show.

“C

’est La Vie: Rock the Runway” was held at The Room Daikanyama in Tokyo last July 19. It was not your usual runway that would last for just 10-20 minutes because it lasted for 2 hours! It was a fusion of drama, live performances and runway show featuring models of all ages, shapes and sizes. A cancer survivor herself, Isomura wanted to help raise awareness against cancer that she partnered with Japan for Livestrong, a volunteer group whose mission is to “inspire and empower people with cancer.” French film director and photographer, Guillaume Tauveron brought his directorial prowess to the show by having a 3-5 minute play in between the runways. The main characters were played by professional actors Takuya Omoto and Mari Yoshida. Although it was his first time to direct a fashion show, he brought to life a

beautiful story about love, hope and survival. At least 50 first time models underwent basic catwalk training conducted by professional models, Risa Ono and Mina Takase. On the day of the show, they were dolled up, styled and they experienced what it feels like to be ramp models, under the guidance of freelance model/actress, Maria Cristina Colico. Arlene Dinglasan, an educator at Sophia University and Waseda University who was also one of the models talked about her experience, “I wanted to support the survivors in any small way that I could by helping raise awareness on cancer and cancer research because awareness is the first step in anything.” “Being a photographer in a fashion show for the first time allowed me to go beyond my comfort zone,” Ian Ramos, an IT engineer and a photographer added. It was a victory for everyone especially the five core members of the

production team including Hero Inaba, a freelance translator and project planner who acted as the backstage coordinator of the show. For someone who had no experience on fashion shows, when asked about how it feels like to pull off a successful show, he said that he was relieved that they managed to finish the show without getting on each other’s nerves. “To me, it was not a personal victory but rather a team victory because somehow, our individual contributions managed to fill each other’s gaps and weaknesses, turning us into one solid unit.” Kayoko Asai, a professional walking and posing stylist was also one of the volunteers of the show. “Personally, it was the most moving show ever,” she said on her Facebook post. The show made a noise not only to the Filipino community but to the Japanese fashion industry as well that talks about the sequel are already being conducted.

The writer is a full-time English teacher and a style blogger. She was one of the five core members of the production team acting as the fashion coordinator. 16
