An enriching conversation between four-time National Award winning, Tamil Nadu-based filmmaker Vetrimaraan and Paolo Bertolin, Selection Committee, Venice International Festival closes the loop on a film’s lifecycle from creation to consumption. They offer unique insights into chasing a creative vision, sourcing Indian independent films and audience appetite to compare the different paradigms and grammar of Indian and European cinema.

Paolo BERTOLIN

Paolo Bertolin is a festival programmer and film critic. He joined the Venice International Film Festival as a member of the selection committee and regional consultant in 2008. The Venice International Film Festival is the oldest and longest running film festival in the world. He has also worked for such events as International Film Festival Rotterdam, Cannes Critics’ Week, International Film Festival Bratislava. In 2013, he also joined the Doha Film Institute as Programme Advisor for the Asia Pacific region.

Vetrimaaran is an acclaimed film director, screenwriter and film producer who works in the Tamil film industry. The four-time National Film Awards winner, Vetrimaaran made his directorial debut with Polladhavan (2007). His second feature film Aadukalam, which released in 2011, won six National Film Awards. He produces films under his production company, Grass Root Film Company. His 2016 National Award-winning film Visaranai was India’s official entry to the Academy Awards.
