Kunde

Kannada | India Documentary | 33 mins Awaiting Premiere

Kunde Namme (Bum festival) is the annual fertility festival of the Kuruba tribal community of Coorg. Originally forest dwellers, the Kurubas have now been relocated to villages in Coorg’s many coffee plantations where they work as labourers. We follow one such village, as the men don various makeshift costumes and cross-dress, wandering through the town, and hurling filthy abuses at everyone from their plantation overlords to Goddess Kali. Fuelled by local hooch, they congregate for a tribal rave at the festival grounds by dusk, celebrating this reversal of roles by cursing and dancing until they drop from exhaustion. As the Kurubas embrace sexuality, obscenity and profanity in spirited song and dance, the documentary provides a sharp contrast to what is considered decent and moral in an increasingly offended world.
