Bhopal 84

Hindi, Urdu | India Documentary | 48 mins Awaiting World Premiere

In the early 1980s Musharraf Ali bought a video camera to film weddings in his hometown in Bhopal, India. On December 2, 1984, 43 tons of toxic gases leaked from within Union Carbide’s Bhopal fertiliser plant, killing thousands overnight. Musharraf fled with his family and neighbours to safety. Two days later, he returned with his ‘wedding camera’ to record what he had observed in the first days after the disaster. Fearing arrest and confiscation of his footage, he kept his tapes secret for 20 years. Bhopal 84 makes this harrowing footage public for the first time in a documentary film on the indictment of Union Carbide and State and Central governments that aims to keep alive awareness of the cover-up of an ongoing gas tragedy whose fatalities and inter-generational effects far exceed official figures.
