All roads lead to UAE!

He came, he saw, he conquered! We are talking about Tom Cruise aka Ethan Hunt who was in Abu Dhabi along with director Christopher McQuarrie and co-stars Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff and Hayley Atwell for the Middle East premiere of his much-awaited action thriller

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. The movie certainly is all the rage globally and at the special screening held ahead of the event, I enjoyed every minute of the car chase sequences, the highoctane, adrenaline pumping, and death-defying stunts that Tom has pulled off with an amazing ease, especially the bike stunt that has got to be one of his best ones yet. They have certainly raised the bar yet again and this one’s just not to be missed!

I remember having met the Hollywood star in Mumbai back in 2011 when interestingly he was on tour for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol that also starred Bollywood’s Anil Kapoor. Now more than a decade later, it was almost surreal to meet him once again, this time for the 7th installment of the hit franchise. Flashing that well-known million buck smile, the global star was as always at his charming best, wowing fans across all generations as he signed posters and posed for selfies. The actor, who turns 61 (but still looks on an age-defying mission) on July 3rd, also shared his excitement of shooting in Abu Dhabi and performing those death-defying action sequences with aplomb. Turn the pages to catch all the excitement as we got up, close and personal with the MI stars!

COOL MOVES

JANHVI KAPOOR

Janhvi Kapoor is a powerhouse of talent and throws herself into each project with much gusto. She rehearsed like mad and honed her moves to perfection. Little wonder that her performance on songs like Pehli baar and Zingaat from her debut film Dhadak and Panghat pe, Nadiyon paar from the horror comedy Roohi had the crowd eating out of her hands. She’s got the moves, alright!

BLOCKBUSTER BHAIJAAN

Salman Khan made the crowd go wild with his trademark moves to hit songs like Aaj ki party meri taraf se from Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Yentamma from Kisi Ka

Bhai, Kisi Ki Jaan. Later, when Govinda was performing, Salman joined his Partner co-star on stage, much to the delight of the audience, who raised a cry for an encore. It must be said that Salman’s energy even at 55 plus is enviable, indeed.

PARTY KING

Govinda is the original king of the party and there’s no denying that. His hit numbers still get played everyday at night clubs and everyone from teenagers to granddads shake their leg to his songs. He’s known for his expressions while dancing and hasn’t lost the art as he entertained the crowd with his moves on songs like G phaad ke from Happy Ending, Akhiyon se golimaare from Akhiyon Se Goli Maare, and Soni de nakhre and Do you want a partner from Partner. He’s 59 but he dances like he was 29.

WHAT HAPPENS TO SKIN IN THE SUMMER?

Extra sunshine in the summer naturally causes the skin’s environment to change. This requires us to take extra measures to ensure we are protected. More hours spent in the sun make it absolutely crucial to apply (and re-apply) adequate UV protection to avoid skin cancer, brown spots, wrinkles, and sagging skin. While many would describe tanned skin as a “healthy glow,” skin actually darkens when exposed to sunshine as a protective measure against UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. There are also aesthetic treatments you can book at our Dubai office to ensure you are practicing the best summer skin care. The skin specialists at AAMC are here to keep you looking and feeling your best all year long, no matter your skin type or concerns. Here are our suggestions for med spa treatments to book for the best summer skin care of your life!

DERMAPLANING

SIZZLER SUPREME

JACQUELINE FERNANDEZ

Jacqueline Fernandez has cemented her position as the go-to person when it comes to item numbers and proved once more with her performance why it’s indeed the case. She moved like a dervish on fast-paced songs like Ra ra rakkamma from Vikram Rona, Besharam rang from Pathaan, Oo bolega from Pushpa and Current laga re from Cirkus. The audience couldn’t have enough and demanded more.

CUB CLASS

TIGER SHROFF

Tiger Shroff is one of the best dancers we have today. Such is his mastery that he makes dancing look effortless. He swooned the crowd with his hi-jinks on numbers as War theme, Ghungroo and Jai jai shiv shankar from War, Main hoon from Munna Michael and Dus bahane from Baaghi 3. His was the most energetic performance which the crowd watched with awe. The applause that greeted him after his final bow was thunderous.

Dermaplaning is an amazing start-of-summer skin resurfacing treatment. If you have dry, uneven, rough, or sensitive skin, dermaplaning offers gentle exfoliation to reveal smooth, radiant skin. We gently glide a surgical blade over the skin to remove dead skin and vellus hairs (AKA “peach fuzz”) to give you touchably soft skin that’s ready for summer (and SPF 30+, of course). Makeup glides on beautifully!

MICRONEEDLING

Microneedling involves the use of a handheld device with a sterile cartridge tip made up of “micro” needles. This triggers the body’s natural healing response, which in turn stimulates and creates new collagen growth. Plus, topical product penetration is increased.

GREEN PEEL

The Green peel Skin Renewal Therapy Treatment is the ultimate summer skin pick-me-up. This treatment is a patient favorite and The most requested skin treatment at our office. SaltFacial utilizes a three-step process to restore, replenish and rejuvenate all skin types, delivering amazing results after just one treatment, without any downtime or sun sensitivity

MAKING MARK her

SPUNKY, SASSY AND THE FEARLESS NUSHRRATT BHARUCCHA IN A CANDID CONVERSATION WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE TALKS ABOUT PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES WITH EACH SCREEN OUTING AND MAKING HER MARK IN THE INDUSTRY

Nushrratt Bharuccha comes with no filters! The actress who has won hearts with films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Titu ki Sweety, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 and garnered acclaim with films like Chhorii, Janhit Meri Jaari and Ajeeb Daastaans, amongst others has clearly etched a mark on the marquee with her outstanding performances. Fun, fearless and fabulous, the star is refreshingly candid as she talks about the grading system of actors in the industry, being a disruptor when it comes to conventional roles and reveals why she’s single!

There has been a gradual and a steady progression when it comes to your career graph in the industry, and you’ve constantly been pushing the boundaries as an actor. So has your criteria changed in terms of choosing a project now versus earlier?

No, it’s the same. Being an actor is very instinctive and a very gut feeling job for me. I don’t overthink things, I don’t analyse them and try to predict an outcome. For me, playing a character has to be unpredictable, a magical journey and I just have to have fun doing it. If there is any other reason I’ll start attaching, then it’ll lose its charm for me. So my process has always been the same. I read a script and if it excites me, then I just do the film. I don’t think on the lines that, ‘I like it, but right now it’s not what is working in the market or the industry, it will not do the business!’ I don’t attach all that to it. So yes, my selecting criteria is still the same. If I like it, I’ll do it.

So when you’re choosing to work on a sequel of a hit franchise, is there a pressure of expectations that the second one has to be better?

Of course, its tremendous pressure. I think I take more stress than the director and the producer also (laughs). I feel like if we are doing a part two, the audience has to love that more than they loved the first one. And take your time, if you feel like you don’t have an idea for the sequel and you don’t know if it’s going to be better than the first one, then don’t make it. But if you’re making it, then you got to kill it. Like it has to be memorable. It’s

the same thing with Chhorii 2 right now.

When you’re doing a role like the one in Chhorii which is very challenging emotionally and takes quite a lot as an actor, do you find it easy to disassociate once the shoot is done?

No, that doesn’t happen with me. I take back a lot of those emotions back home and I do get drained emotionally and physically. I tend to become a lot more like the character. Like if I’m doing a role and shooting that film for say 45 days, then I become that person for 45 days. And then suddenly on the 46th day to not be that person anymore, it’s not easy for me because you’ve become that person on a daily basis. I can’t switch on and off that fast. I don’t have that talent yet. A lot of actors can do it, but I need a proper break. I have to switch off because I can’t go back to being me if I don’t take that break. So, I switch off. I don’t answer calls, or texts. I just go into my shell and I do whatever it takes and as much time as it takes for me to come back to me. I don’t rush out of it because I feel like after a point, actors should have someone to consult or someone to go to kind of take all of it out.

Like giving a closure to that character?

Yes, exactly. I think there should be some sort of process after the role is done that takes you back to being you again. Before starting a film, the director takes you through the character and their world, but you are the one investing the emotions into the film right? I feel like after the film is over, there

July 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 13

should be investment in the actor as a person too. Like to help you become that whole healthy person again by reducing all that emotional journey and the stress. I mean I’ve broken down so many times on set because I’m like “It’s too much, I just can’t!” It’s too intimidating, too overwhelming, too draining. I really feel there should be a process to bring actors back to normal.

Have any of your characters been an extension of the real you?

Somewhere I feel like a lot of my characters have extended

into me or from me. I felt that first with Vani in Akaash Vani. I felt like I was a lot like Vani, somebody who would sacrifice things for family and parents, and I was somebody who can get stuck in situations because she’s just doing it for the other person even though she’s not happy herself. I’ve been in those situations. But I did not connect with either of my Pyaar ka Punchnama characters (laughs). I swear I used to go on set every day and be troubled. I would be like, “Maine aisi ladkiyan dekhi hi nahin hai bhai! Main kahan se lau inko?” So I used to hate it and in Pyaar ka Punchnama

2, they made me hate it even more because they made me a dumb blonde kind and I was like are you kidding me? This has gotten worse from part one. But anyway, it was all part of the film. I do however connect a lot with Sweety from Sonu ke Titu Ki Sweety I know what people felt about her, but for me she was never negative. I am Sweety, if someone challenges me, I give it back to them. If someone plays this game with me, I’ll play it back and be upfront about it. So, I feel like for me, Sweety was actually more empowering than what the others were. Chhorii again was

a little unreal for me because I’ve not been a mother. So, it was a little bit difficult and a challenge for me, given that premise. But my director was very sensitive and found ways to get me to do it. Also, see on a primary level of being a human being, the emotions are the same. If somebody wrongs you continuously you will get up and fight back. Your survival instinct kicks in. So, Chhorii for me was that survival instinct, which anybody at one point, will connect with. So, that way on a larger scale, I connect with a lot of characters.

How much does the Box Office success matter in comparison to critical acclaim?

The basic language of the industry is that a film has to make money. How much money it makes or what level of box office success varies. My whole thing is that the producer should not suffer a loss. Secondly, whatever film I’m doing, it should be of a certain value and standard and people should enjoy it. I should be proud to be a part of the film. If that means, that’s critical acclaim, then maybe that’s it. So, I’m not running behind certain specifications, but on a base level, I definitely would like my film to make money and the profit, and people should talk about my film in a way where they say, “Haan humein pasand hai, maza aaya.” I think for me, I’ll consider it a failure or regret it if somebody calls it ‘a bad film’. That for me is a sure-shot loss. And I’ve done such films, so I know it, I’ve gone through it. So, let’s take notes to not do such films. It’s okay I’ll do two films in a year, but those films would be the ones I am happy doing, the audience is happy seeing, and the producer is happy making money. Simple. Through your journey, what’s been the biggest challenge along the way?

I don’t know how to put it in a certain word. You know sometimes there is a certain unsaid thing, undercurrent of perception, acceptance that exists. I’m sure it exists in every industry, not just ours. Nobody calls it out, but everybody is playing

14 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2023
COVER STORY

that same game. I think for me that has been the biggest challenge. By that I mean, suddenly there are actors put into grades. Grade A actor, B actors, C actors. I don’t understand what those are. I don’t know what they mean when they say I’m an A-list actor. What is the meaning of that and who has defined this? I don’t understand how that has come into play in an industry like this where you write a film, you write a character, people see you as that character, they test you or they believe you could play it and you get cast. It’s simple. I don’t know how you start by saying, I only want to take A-lister actors in this. I mean if those A-lister actors don’t fit into your part, that doesn’t matter but they need to be an A-list actor. I don’t understand what this is, but yeh sabse badi cheez hai because when you’re an outsider and when you’ve done films on your own and those films have been absolute box office successes, then who is deciding? Is the audience deciding, is the media deciding, is the film fraternity deciding? Why is there a grade system? When we’re working with a director, we don’t say, I want an A-list director. There are no grades there then why have them for actors! You know, when you can see the challenge in front of you and you know that’s a challenge, you find ways to overcome it. You’ll find ways to overcome a hurdle. But this is an unseen, unheard thing, so how do you jump over that? How do you fight it, when it is in the shadows?

So, what’s been your headspace like through overcoming all these hurdles and obstacles? My headspace has been always the same. It was the same situation when I did Pyaar Ka Punchnama then, it is the same situation even now. It has maybe become better but it has not changed

drastically. Back then I was clear that I’m going to do my job and I’m going to work with people who are going to work with me, which is what I also do today. That’s why perhaps you’ll see I work with the same people again and again, because somewhere there is a correct creative space that we agree with. And also, for me, if somebody wants to work with me, that is half my battle won. I would rather want to work with someone who wants to work with me than run behind somebody who doesn’t want to work with me. Why am I going to convince you to work with me? If you feel like Nushrratt doesn’t work for my film or my character, okay, no problem, that’s a creative call. I’m happy to accept, and I’m happy to work with people who think I work well for their film. So, my headspace has always been to do the work you have at hand. Work with the people who are the right headspace and creative mind as you because only then will that magic happen on screen and people will see it. When you make film for any other reason, you will see it on screen and audience will feel there is no soul, no emotion in the film. So, I choose to work with the people who are of the right space of mind and that way I’m happy every day on set doing my job. I come home content.

What is the real Nushrratt like when she is not in front of the camera?

I’m a bit of everything. I have my lazy days when I don’t want to get out of bed and don’t want to be disturbed. I am somebody who can binge watch 16 hours of a Korean show in one go. Or I’ll take off on a road trip, all day just driving. I’m also someone who can go wild and party out, be the last person to leave the party. And I’m also somebody who, if I don’t want to go to a party, I’ll just say I’m sick, I can’t come. So I think I’m a mix of it all. One thing I definitely am is super unpredictable. Even I don’t know what I will do next. And I like

Mainetostarthidisruptionsekiyatha.ThefirsttimeI actuallygotaproperpositiveheroinerolewasDream Girlwhichwasin2019.Butallmyfilmsbeforethat weredisruptors.Ihadneverplayedastraight character till then.

being that. I like being full of this spontaneous kind of a vibe. I have people who are like ‘listen we are very worried, you will eventually harm yourself’. Like I literally had stitches on my eyebrow in Chhorii 2 and inspite of being injured I had continued to shoot and everyone around was like ‘Are you mad? You can’t shoot now.’ And I ended up getting stitches because that gash was that deep. Ek brave actor to ek baar ke liye phir bhi kar le, but actress to matlab hi nahi banta (laughs). So you can’t define me. And I like not being put in a clear definition.

What’s happening on the personal front? Dating? No, I’m honestly not dating anyone now. I myself sometimes feel like why am I doing everything alone? Why don’t I have someone who I can go and watch movies with or go to dinners with or share things? I go up on stage and I win an award and I come back down, but who do I celebrate it with? It’s such a disheartening and such a deeply

saddening feeling. I remember taking an award and I was in a car alone, I was driving back home, and I was thinking –‘kisko phone karke bolu ki hi I’ve won an award, celebrate karte hain kya?’ (laughs)

How can you be single Nushrratt?

I don’t know. I don’t have an answer for this (laughs). I have moments when I really wish I was in a relationship, but then I’ve been single for so long, I have gotten very comfortable with doing things at my time, at my pace, not running around. It’s also difficult na, like I’m hardly in Mumbai. So, I see people around me dating and I see them struggling to catch up. And I’m like ‘oh god, main vo ek ghanta so jaati hoon’ (laughs). Those times I feel, thank God I’m not held up by these things and I’m free to do what I want to. And I think I’ve gotten very comfortable being single, but I really don’t know what to make of it.

July 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 15

You have made some brave choices as an actor… Yeah, I think nobody was doing PKP and I can tell you that I think one of the reasons I even got cast was because of that. I also didn’t want to do it, to start with, but they did a lot of convincing. But on a serious note, I think all of those films gave me a chance to be in the film industry and be a leading actor. Because there was a certain kind of mould that you had to fit to be able to be cast in a film as a lead heroine. And I didn’t have any of that. I was just a girl next door, petite, fragile, thin… Nobody would look at me and say ye lead actress ban sakti hai. So, I think because I chose to do those films that were slightly offbeat to start with, like LSD which broke out more than anything at that time and then it followed up with a Pyaar Ka Punchnama and PKP 2. So, I think all of those choices of not doing conventionally typical massy Bollywood films, or what was working at that point, really helped. They were actually the disruptors. Maine to start hi disruption se kiya tha. The first time I actually got a proper positive heroine role was Dream Girl which was in 2019. But all my films before that were disruptors. I had never played a straight character till then.

What are your upcoming projects?

There’s Chhorii 2, then there’s Akelii. Hopefully that will also come this year. And there is one more film I can’t talk about, because they haven’t announced it yet, but that’s also a female-centric, female led story. It’s a very interesting revengedrama and I’m hoping even that comes out this year. I finished shooting it a few months back. So, I have three releases this year.

Rakul Preet Singh looked divine in a Mark Bumgarner blue corset gown. The highlight was the floor-sweeping train, as was the eye-catching diamond necklace. Kajol emanated bosslady vibes in a black sequin pantsuit. Statement rings, wavy tresses and a subtle makeup base added to her allure.

girlWHAT A

WANTS

SARA ALI KHAN

LOVES TO TALK NINETEEN TO TWO THOUSANDS. SHE’LL SPEAK AND SPEAK AND THEN REALISE SHE HAS MEANDERED FAR AND AWAY FROM YOUR INTENDED QUESTION. SHE LOVES TO TELL STORIES, REGALING YOU WITH ANECDOTES FROM HER VARIOUS JOURNEYS. SHE’S A FOODIE WHO DOESN’T MIND GORGING ON A PLATE OF HOT PARATHAS FROM A DHABA OFF THE HIGHWAY, SOMETHING HER MORE SNOBBISH COLLEAGUES WOULD LOOK DOWN ON. SHE LOVES TO WEAR INDIAN CLOTHES, MAKING A STYLE STATEMENT OUT OF A SIMPLE SALWAR SUIT. SHE’S A NATURAL IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA AND LOVES TO THROW HERSELF IN HER ROLE. SHE DOESN’T HESITATE DISPLAYING RAW, EDGY EMOTIONS ON SCREEN AND SAYS WHAT COMES TO HER MIND OFF SCREEN. SHE’S TRULY HER MOTHER’S DAUGHTER IN THAT REGARD. PRESENTING EXCERPTS FROM A TALKATHON WITH THE BUBBLY ACTOR.

YOU LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES. YOU LEARN TO FORGIVE YOURSELF FOR THOSE MISTAKES. BUT MORE THAN THAT, YOU HAVE TO BE EXCITED TO KEEP GROWING

What attracted you to Gaslight, a suspense thriller? As an actor, I love new challenges. On the first day of my promotion of Gaslight, many journalists said, “We didn’t expect you to be like this”; that’s a victory in itself. You know Sara by now. You know what she likes; you know her jokes; you know what foods she likes; you know this and that. But in a film, as a character, I never want you to be able to predict her. I want to be able to do everything. I have a lot of energy. I am a bubbly girl. I am a high-spirited girl. So agar aap mujhe aisa kirdar doge, who is in a wheelchair, who can’t move her lower body, it will be so exciting and challenging for me.

How did you prepare for such a role?

Director Pawan Kriplani, along with an acting coach, guided me for the role. I also had to figure out how to use the wheelchair. The audience needs to feel like I’m genuinely dependent on a wheelchair. It was important to get that right and I think I succeeded.

Have you ever been gaslighted in a relationship? Gaslighting is a strong word and after doing the film, I got to know the word even more. Something happens in every kind of relationship from time to time. So many times it happens that you are made to believe that you are to be blamed for something, even when you haven’t done anything. What I loved about Meesha’s character is that, in a world

where she can’t trust anyone, she’s the kind of person you can count on. She stays true to who she is. She stays strong in her determination. And she does not allow any of this to affect her.

Did the film affect you mentally?

I completely surrendered to my director, Pawan sir. And I worked with helpful co-actors. I was working with an acting teacher called Ritesh, who helped us with breathing techniques because a film of this genre is exhausting. What is acting? Acting is reacting. When you have to imagine that suddenly there is a scream or that suddenly a bat flew over your head and you

don’t actually have a physical thing to react to, then breathing becomes important. Other than that, I think Pawan sir created a nice atmosphere on the sets. We were isolated in a remote location for 40 days. Pawan sir used to play great music on the sets, which helped me understand my character and her world.

What is something women need to be aware of in a toxic relationship? In any relationship, it’s important to listen to your inner voice. Learn to trust your instincts and don’t ever silence your inner voice.

From Kedarnath to Gaslight, do you find yourself evolving as an actor?

That’s something for the audience to perceive and comment. I’m definitely enjoying myself. Every film is a different learning experience, especially after Love Aaj Kal and Coolie, where I didn’t do good work. I realised the need for letting go of that, not holding on too tightly but also not being afraid to take on challenges. And when I was given the opportunity to do a film like Atrangi Re, which people enjoyed, I became hungry to do more. I became hungry to perform as much as I can. You learn from your mistakes. You learn to forgive yourself for those mistakes. But more than that you have to be excited to keep growing. That’s what I

INTERVIEW
30 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2023

believe to be the most important thing.

When you look back on your career, what are the lessons you learnt along the way? When your film doesn’t do well, you feel disappointed. Everything will hit your heart but the idea is to get up and move regardless of what has happened. I think it’s okay to be vulnerable but one should also keep going. Life isn’t a bed of roses always. How you push yourself in times of adversity counts the most. It’s easy to be happy when the going is good but it isn’t easy to smile while facing hardships. You’re bound to fail, you’re bound to fall but how you bounce back is important.

What do you consider as your biggest strength as an actor?

I am honest as a person and as an actor. In every moment that I am emoting, I try to be honest on camera. I’m not a method actor or a trained actor. Relying on genuine honesty is something that I have tried to do in most of my films. And the viewers have related to it.

People love your Instagram posts...

I really think that if you do something with a desire to win someone’s heart, you may or may not be successful but if you just stay honest, you will always be happy. Your honesty might or might not win admirers but being true to your beliefs will help you sleep better for sure. I’m always forthright in my posts and maybe people like me for that. It’s easy to put up a false front on social media but my fans know whatever I post is hundred percent genuine.

Director Aanand L. Rai once said that there is more to Sara than what you see on Instagram. He must have said this because he knows how

jovial and chirpy I can be. I like to joke, I like to laugh but there’s more to me than just that. I’m not just a high on life, bubbly girl. I am also an intelligent girl with a heart, mind and soul, as well as ambition. If you get lost in the jokes and humour, you might mistakenly think that I am not the serious girl with depth. But I am.

Your fans admire the fact that you love wearing ethnic clothes. Your sartorial choices have inspired a trend. Main ek desi ladki hoon (I’m an Indian girl). My mother tongue is Hindi. If in any way I’ve helped bring the trend of Indian clothing back, I am proud of that. We are Indians and we look most beautiful in Indian clothes. I wear them with lots of pride. Mujhe koi farq nahin padta hai, ki suit pehnne se mujhe koi behenji bulaye ya bhai saab. (I don’t care if someone calls me names for my wardrobe choices.). I don’t get affected by that.

How would you describe the real Sara in one line?

I’m a soft person at heart and I have a loud mouth. I think that is the true depiction of Sara.

Did you watch your grandmother’s film, Gulmohar, which was recently released on OTT?

Yes, I saw the film. I think she is a timeless actress. She is a beautiful performer and an absolute delight to watch. I just wish she would do more and more work. I’m not sure if I’m as graceful as she is. I want to have that grace and radiance that she has both as a performer and as an actor. She’s so well-read, interested in current events and has a great sense of general knowledge.

What are the pluses and minuses of belonging to a

film family?

The minus is that there are a lot of people there wanting to indulge in a nepotism debate. There are a lot of people who want to drag you down. And the advantage is that you have parents who have come from this world. They know the film world inside out and can point out the pitfalls, guide you properly in every aspect. And I learned early in my career that you are as successful as your last release. Don’t look to make friends or enemies here because nothing is permanent. Being an actor is just a part of my life. There are more important things in my life. Travelling is important to me. Having friends is important to me. Introspection is important. We all should learn to take some time off our hectic lives for introspection, as it helps sort you out from within. n

Power buzz

Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar make for a formidable filmmaker duo. Sharing a common vision and creative processes, their production house Tiger Baby Films sees them churn out power-packed and impressive directorials one after another. From Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara to Talaash and from Dil Dhadakne Do to Gully Boy, and from their OTT series Made in Heaven to their latest Dahaad now, that has been directed by Reema Kagti and Ruchika Oberoi and created by Zoya and Reema, they continue their success run. Starring Sonakshi Sinha, Gulshan Devaiah, Sohum Shah, and Vijay Varma, Dahaad has struck a chord with the audience. We caught up with Reema and Zoya for an exclusive interview where the two reveal why the writing of Dahaad took them longer than anything else they’ve ever written and also talk about the power dynamics between its lead characters

32 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2023 INTERVIEW
ACE FILMMAKER DUO ZOYA AKHTAR AND REEMA KAGTI IN CONVERSATION WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF THEIR LATEST WEB-SERIES DAHAAD AND THE POWER DYNAMICS OF RELATIONSHIPS EXPLORED IN IT ZOYA AKHTAR, RUCHIKA OBEROI, REEMA KAGTI AND RITESH

DAHAAD ADDRESSES SO MANY DIFFERENT ISSUES - THERE ARE LAYERS OF GENDER POLITICS, RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION, CASTEISM… SO AS FILMMAKERS WHO HAVE LARGELY BEEN SO URBAN, HOW DID YOU NAIL THESE SO SENSITIVELY AND PERFECTLY AND PORTRAY THE NUANCES WITH EVERY DIALOGUE AND SCENE?

Reema: Well I originally come from a small town. So, it’s not something that isn’t in my consciousness. Also, if you are somebody that’s aware, if you are somebody that reads and has the ear to the ground or has empathy and interest, I don’t think it’s very removed from you. You can’t be cut off with what’s going on around you. A lot of it also comes from the people you interview, the people you speak to, the people you research and their experiences.

WAS THERE NEVER A TEMPTATION TO DIRECT ANY SEGMENT IN THE ENTIRE SERIES?

Zoya: Of course, there is. But we have two children, and I was working on Made in Heaven Season 2.

REEMA YOU HAVE MANAGED TO KEEP THE TONE SUBTLE RATHER THAN GO OVER THE TOP OR OPT FOR CLICHED THINGS, WHETHER IT WAS DEPICTING THE COPS OR VICTIMS...

Reema: We sorted that at the writing level. And I have to say that writing of Dahaad probably has taken us longer than anything else we’ve ever written. It just took us a long time because I think there were so many parts and all of it had to fit and we did want to give a feel of wheels within wheels. Because when you talk about empowering women, it’s a very, very long conversation. So yeah, getting all the parts right, I think the writing of it was the biggest challenge. Apart from shooting during COVID and all, those were physically or mentally taxing but writing was just difficult.

AMONG THE MANY FACETS IN THE SERIES, THE DYNAMICS BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS PLAYED BY GULSHAN DEVAIAH AND SONAKSHI SINHA IS PARTICULARLY INTERESTING…

Reema: They are kindred spirits. They kind of understand each other. There’s a deep understanding and acceptance and respect of each other.

Zoya: And there’s an inherent, inbuilt goodness in all three – Gulshan, Sohum and Sonakshi. All three come to this space together from very different quarters and different backdrops. Like the character of Devi Lal (Gulshan), who is honest and therefore sent there. The character of Kailash Parghi (Sohum Shah) was dishonest and therefore sent there. The character of Anjali Bhaati (Sonakshi) grew up in this space and worked her way up to this position. And I think all three coming at the beginning; she’s aggressive, Devi Lal is trying to be the one that calms things down, does things in a fair manner and wants to do goodness even if it’s not

We work with all kinds of stories, with all kinds of genres. We’re not really interested in doing only women thing. I mean look at it, we’ve done enough dude movies too. But whether it’s Talaash or a Gully Boy, women will have bite. They’ll never be props. Even if they come in for 10 scenes, they’ll keep those scenes up.

overt. And Parghi just wants to get by and make his life and get out of there. And then something happens where all three connect and realize that they are kindred spirits, like Reema said. And inherently, they are good. Inherently they can be heroes.

UNLIKE VIJAY VARMA’S CHARACTER ANAND SWARNAKAR…

Reema: It was almost like we were trying to create that antidote to a character like Anand. But we tried to humanize him too. Because even if he’s doing his horrific things, he’s not an animal. He’s not something that’s outside of being a human.

Zoya: He’s also been nurtured by this society only.

Reema: And we felt that the antidote to him… people who do bad things, are people who do good things. And in a way, Parghi’s track, Devi Lal’s track, Anjali Bhaati’s track; these

were meant to be not solutions but ways out of this mess.

THE WAY YOU HAVE SHOWN THE CHOICES THAT THESE PEOPLE MAKE AT PARTICULAR JUNCTURES OF THEIR LIVES IS VERY INTERESTING, ESPECIALLY PARGHI.

Reema: When we started his track, he’s a bit ambiguous, we don’t know which way he’s going to fall. And the fact that he’s ambiguous is also making him feel the world is a bad place. And when he has a change of heart and decides to do the right thing, the world starts looking like a better place to him.

ANY PLANS FOR A SEQUEL?

Zoya: Yeah, we’d love to, but we’re waiting to hear back from Amazon on that.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE VIJAY FOR ANAND AND GULSHAN FOR DEVI LAL AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND?

Reema: For me Gulshan was always

ZOYA AKHTAR

We just enjoy telling stories, making movies, long format, short films. We enjoy that. And it’s different on OTT because you don’t have box office pressure. It’s different because people discover these stories in their own time.

SHAITAN, SO WE COULD VISUALIZE HIM PLAYING ANAND AS WELL. Reema: If we had put him for Anand, there was nobody to put in Devi. Because honestly, I don’t think anybody else could have done it, the calibre that he’s brought is just beyond my expectations also.

BOTH OF YOU AS FILMMAKERS HAVE COME A LONG WAY IN TERMS OF ANSWERING QUESTIONS TO ‘AS WOMEN FILMMAKERS IS IT A CONSCIOUS THING TO THINK ABOUT WOMEN EMPOWERMENT…’. SO DO YOU STILL FACE THIS KIND OF A BIAS WHEN YOU’RE PITCHING YOUR STORIES?

Reema: No, it never comes up with actors or producers. But I think to address what you’re saying, I definitely think that it informs us as storytellers. So yeah, I think we are very aware of that.

WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS THAT WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO?

Reema: We have Made in Heaven 2 dropping soon and then we have The Archies (Zoya’s direction). And we have a couple of things we are not yet announcing.

HOW DO YOU ENJOY THE OTT SPACE? IS IT ANY DIFFERENT?

a longer period to talk about and develop characters. So, these are the things that make it better.

SO, IT’S LIBERATING AS FILMMAKERS AND STORYTELLERS.

Zoya: I mean it’s liberating in the sense that, yes you can take your time to tell a story. But you can’t compare it to a theatre. Because theatre is larger than life experience, it’s a community experience, watching a film on a big screen with 200 people in the hall, that’s incomparable.

Reema: I think the best thing about long format is you get so much time to develop characters, storylines, themes. And Zoya and I always have length problem in the feature films is what I feel. But the good thing about it is also the bad thing about it, because it’s a lot of work.

Zoya: But also, having said that, when you’re in your theatre and you have that larger-thanlife image that you have made and someone whistles or claps, nothing touches that.

BETWEEN YOU BOTH, HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO DIRECTS WHAT?

Zoya: I think that when we start, when the germ of the idea comes, there’s always somebody who’s pushing it more and that person wants to direct it. Most

number 1 choice for Devi because I admired him as an actor for a long time, I’ve always wanted to work with him and if you see how he’s dealt with it, I think nobody else could have done what he did.

Zoya: He has made some very interesting choices and I’m just putting it on him, maybe his psychology to come to this character was different. But if you look at it, he has not just played a cop. He’s just not done anything that we expect an actor playing a policeman to do. The gentleness, the resolve and just the correctness. He just oozes goodness without it being fake. Now that takes a very secure actor to be that relaxed into a part like this. A very secure actor, and that’s what he is.

WE’VE ALWAYS SEEN GULSHAN IN ROLES LIKE

making movies, long format, short

movies, long format, short films. We enjoy that. And it’s different on OTT because you don’t have box office pressure. It’s different because people discover these stories in their own time. Long format as a storytelling space is different because you have

time we have that kind of a clarity. So, there has to be that one person who’s leading it.

REEMA KAGTI

WARRIOR CODE

Aditya Roy Kapur

SHARES HIS CAREER AND LIFE PHILOSOPHY WITH SUMAN SHARMA

Aditya Roy Kapur’s chiselled body and handsome visage has earned him the handsome hunk tag but given a choice, he’d rather be known for his acting chops than being a himbo. From being a romantic hero, he’s successfully turned into an action star. He’s one of the ttest celebs around for sure, what with other stars asking him for tips and advice. He’s carved an identity separate from his much celebrated elder brother, producer Siddharth Roy Kapur. While he loathes the rat race, he does aspire to be the best version of himself with every release and would like to dabble in as many genres as possible in order to hone his versatility. We caught up with the actor who made his debut on OTT with The Night Manager and recently played a double role in Gumraah.

YOU BEGAN YOUR CAREER IN ROMANTIC FILMS. YOU’VE SINCE MOVED ON TO ACTION AND THRILLER FILMS SUCH AS MALANG, RASHTRIYA KAVACH OM, AND NOW GUMRAAH. WAS IT A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO SWITCH GENRES?

It was indeed. I had a great time performing action in Malang. I also enjoy action and thriller films. I was a huge fan of murder mysteries. I felt I should make more films like these. Besides, it’s something that comes easy to me. I’ve been a fan of action flicks since I was a kid. This is incredibly exciting for an actor because you get to try new things. You don’t want to be a repeat performer as an actor. You should always seek roles that will push you. Gumraah was a wonderful film for me since I got to play two characters. It was both exciting and challenging.

WOULD YOU CONSIDER AASHIQUI 2 TO BE A WATERSHED MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER?

Without a doubt. That was a watershed moment in my career. Prior to it, I had been in three films as a supporting actor. And, prior to Aashiqui 2, I had

never romanced with a girl on-screen. I’d never played the lead before. That was my first lead and it altered the game for me. I don’t think I’d be here if Aashiqui 2 hadn’t happened.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE MADE THE FILM SO POPULAR WITH THE AUDIENCE?

I believe that some stories have an innate element to which people can relate; perhaps they recognised themselves in the characters, or perhaps they thought they were relatable, and the conflict between them was something that everyone could understand and identify with. For example, A Star Is Born, starring Bradley Cooper, was a box office success. It all comes down to human connections. There’s something remarkable about it, you can tell. The direction, music, songs, age and timing of Mohit Suri were all great. It’s like hum sab sath mein mile aur ek magic ho gaya. Kuch cheezein bas ho jaati hain (We all got together and magic happened). Consider yourself fortunate if it happens a few times in your career.

DO YOU GET FRUSTRATED WHEN YOUR FILMS DON’T WORK?

Of course, you’re disappointed because you put in so much time and work. A film takes one or two years to make and then it depends on how people react to it. You undoubtedly feel guilty and disappointed. You hope people like it. It takes some getting used to. You must learn how to deal with it and keep moving on.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT WHEN A FILM DOES NOT PERFORM AS WELL AS YOU HAD HOPED? Work harder. There is no other alternative. I feel horrible when my films do poorly. But it’s critical to experience that. Don’t try to avoid it. Simply accept the situation. It takes time for things to become normal. So I took advantage of the opportunity. I just cut myself from the world. Then, after a few days, I return and begin working on other projects. Otherwise, you become sidetracked and your positivity erodes. So if you have the option of returning to work,

FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST

IF I HAD TO KEEP UP WITH BEING A PROMINENT FIGURE FOR 365 DAYS, I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO LIVE THE KIND OF LIFE I WANT TO LIVE

38 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2023

that’s fantastic.

DO YOU BELIEVE IT IS DIFFICULT TO SURVIVE IN THE INDUSTRY?

It’s obviously not an easy job. You must have a strong sense of self-assurance, fortitude and belief in your skills. You will not obtain anything until you work hard. That is the most important requirement. You must be willing to put in a lot of effort. Because it is somewhat lengthy. It is more tenacious; it is not a simple task. It’s strenuous work. You’re off and running. You are not seated. So it’s a difficult job and everyone needs a little luck.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET OUT OF THE BED AND FACE THE CAMERA DAY IN AND DAY OUT?

The desire to work. Because there are so many aspects to acting. Obviously, you know what happens in front of the camera. But there are so many things that happen behind the camera, such as preparation, collaboration, acting prep, sitting with the director, creating something. So the joy of creating something is good, and creating a new character, that passion is very much there. That is what keeps me going. I won’t be able to sustain it unless that is present.

WHAT IS THE MOST ENJOYABLE ASPECT ABOUT BECOMING AN ACTOR? Being able to get immersed in

another Universe for a short time

DO YOU BELIEVE YOU’VE GROWN AS AN ACTOR OVER THE YEARS?

I went into acting without knowing if it was something I wanted to do. What I’ve realised is that it’s something I enjoy and am extremely passionate about. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have discovered it and to be able to do what I enjoy. When I’m on set, I’m the happiest person alive. As an actor, the more experience you have, the more you understand yourself. You will comprehend the procedure and what works best for you. And you will begin working on it. You are continuously aware of the areas in which you need to modify and develop. So hopefully with each film, the desire is to continue evolving; to continue assessing yourself and wondering if you are doing enough to evolve. I can now detach and reconnect.

DO YOU ENJOY TAKING BREAKS BETWEEN FILMS?

I enjoy being busy but I also enjoy taking breaks, so it’s a delicate mix. It’s critical to take time to renew yourself and try new things. It’s not a smart idea to keep doing the same thing. So you should have a fresh viewpoint on your next picture.

DO YOU HAVE A LIFE OUTSIDE OF FILMS?

Yes, I enjoy watching sports. I work in showbiz so it’s a mandate for me to watch all kinds of films. So

I’m mostly watching movies when I’m at home. I occasionally want to switch off from all of this and watch something else. Aside from that, I enjoy travelling. I enjoy keeping up with current events. I enjoy reading and participating in sports. I enjoy listening to music and socialising with my pals. There are numerous activities that I adore. I strive to do as many things as possible.

IT MUST BE QUITE HARD TO UNPLUG, ESPECIALLY TODAY, WHEN YOU HAVE TO BE SEEN AND HEARD ALL THE TIME. That requires willpower alright. I was quite excited when I first started in the field. I loved doing everything with them: making friends, socialising and having fun. But after a while, I realised that this was only a portion of my life, not my entire existence. I’ve had my ups and downs and I’ve learnt to cope with them better. It is sometimes vital to consider how you deal with ups as well as downs.

WHY DO YOU MAINTAIN A LOW PROFILE, DESPITE HAVING AN INSANE FAN FOLLOWING ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

When my film is released, I am thrust into the spotlight. It’s not that I’m afraid of the media or dislike being in a crowd; I’m perfectly OK socially. As I previously stated, it is critical for me to disengage from all of this. If I had to keep up with being a prominent figure for 365 days, I wouldn’t be able to live the kind of life I want to live. I like to disengage, step away from the spotlight for a bit, and then return after recharging. It would be exhausting

for me to always be in front of the public. You need time to reflect about yourself. When you’re in the spotlight as an actor, all you can think about is yourself. Self-consumption and self-awareness go hand in hand. When you go away from this profession, you stop thinking about yourself all the time. This is also really significant.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE FILMS THAT HAVE MADE YOU THINK, “I WISH I COULD DO THAT”? I’m not built that way. I don’t get envious of anyone or of anything. When I watch a terrific movie, I can’t picture anyone else playing that part apart from the actor who is doing the role. I can’t see myself playing that part. In my opinion, he is the best candidate for the post.

everywhere all at once

SHRUTI HAASAN EXPLAINS TO TANISHA BHATTACHARYA THAT MULTITASKING IS HER WAY TO BE

It can be quite scary to come from a family of accomplished performers like Kamal Haasan and Sarika. But Shruti Haasan, who wears many hats representing her creative side, views it all as a genuine blessing. With her outstanding

performances, the actress has made a name for herself in both the South and Hindi film industries. She says it hasn’t been that unusual for her because she comes from an acting family. She is aware that any small accomplishment she makes will be frequently contrasted with the achievements of her father. “I don’t think about

it,” she responds when asked about it. “Because it’ll always be there. I believe in doing my own thing, carving my own path and I’m grateful to those who’ve liked my choices.” She adds that the best piece of advice her father has given her is no pain, no gain. She has realised the truth of it over the years and has always adhered to it.

Besides being an actor, she’s an accomplished singer too, which she says is a gift she has inherited from her father. She remembers the days when she and her parents discussed music and introduced her to numerous genres. “My mom enjoys listening to music and has great taste in music. She exposed me to some of my favourite artistes and musicians, including The Prodigy and Bob Dylan. My father also enjoyed musicals and classic rock and roll, which was wonderful. However, as evidenced by his films, he has a wonderful singing voice and musicality. Growing up, he and I would frequently sing together at home, which I thought was wonderful.”

EverythingShruti got a taste of the hurly-burly of showbiz on the sets of her father’s period film, Hey Ram!, where she was a costume assistant at the mere age of 14. It was a period drama and as there was a requirement for a 14-year-old girl to be part of an important scene, she was pushed into service. It was a rush job, to say the least, and was over before she knew it. “It was a scene where a well-known person had to be in the frame alongside his daughter but they didn’t have it covered.

Shruti got a taste of the hurly-burly of showbiz on the sets of her father’s period film, Hey Ram!, where she was a costume assistant at the mere age of 14. It was a period drama and as there was a requirement

42 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2023

for a 14-year-old girl to be part of an important scene, she was pushed into service. It was a rush job, to say the least, and was over before she knew it. “It was a scene where a well-known person had to be in the frame alongside his daughter but they didn’t have it covered. So on my father’s instructions, I was put in costume, thrown into the scene. And then I got back to doing the costumes of other people in 10 minutes. It was neither glamorous nor exciting,” she states.

One can safely say she got into multitasking early on. Today, we see her travelling the world for her music concerts. Her constant shuttling from one international location to another satisfies the wanderer in her as well. She makes sure to visit out-of-the-way places in every city she goes to. She loves to explore non-touristy nooks and corners. And while her profession doesn’t allow her to gorge on food because heroines are supposed to be waif-like on screen, she does take bite-sized samples of local cuisine wherever she lands. She’s landed her first international project in the form of the psychological thriller The Eye. Directed by Daphne Schmon, it also stars Scottish actor Mark Rowley, British actor Anna Savva, Australia-born Linda Marlowe and Greek actor Christos Stergioglou in key roles. She shot for the project some months ago in Greece and loved every minute of it.

There are a plethora of actors who have eventually moved to the West and pursued Hollywood projects. Shruti says she’s glad

she’s got the chance to extend her repertoire. You know, someone asked, “What is the most challenging part you’ve played?” And I was like, “the quintessential Indian woman,” which is every part I’ve been offered. I think that I’m traditional and very desi at heart, but the way I grew up and the stuff I like, the way I talk and just everything made it hard for me to fit in India. It has always been easier outside. But you also realise that being Indian is such a beautiful thing. That colour never washes away and it shows up at unexpected times and places. Especially the way India has been positioned in the last 15-20 years, we are a product of being Indian and globalised at the same time.”

She’s also got the bigbudget pan-Indian film, Salaar, in her kitty. She co-stars with Prabhas in the project, which is directed by KGF fame Prashanth Neel. The film is said to have worldclass action sequences. Shruti is undoubtedly excited to be part of such a prestigious project. Speaking of the journey, she says, “Prashant Sir creates a whole new world in his films. And that’s what I loved about KGF as well. A filmmaker’s aim is ultimately to bring you into their world. And he does that by creating a world within a world. And he does that beautifully. I loved that and I loved that each character had their moment and their place in the sun,” she gushes. She’d been manifesting to work with Prabhas, having heard wonderful things about him. She admits to having had a spectacular time working alongside him.

With a filmography spanning diverse film industries, her approach to the ongoing debate about pan-Indian films sheds new light. “We had premieres back

My father also enjoyed musicals and classic rock and roll, which was wonderful. However, as evidenced by his films, he has a wonderful singing voice and musicality. Growing up, he and I would frequently sing together at home

when I was growing up. One was in Mumbai, one was in Chennai and one was in Hyderabad. There were three different languages. This is what I saw with my parents growing up. So I just thought that was normal. You can make films across the board and represent a part of your culture but also inculcate different things. So I grew up in a Pan-Indian home. When I first joined the business, I always said, “I’m a pan-Indian actor. And now it is like a real thing.”

Shruti made her Bollywood debut in the 2009 film Luck alongside Imran Khan and Mithun Chakraborty. She reconnected with Mithun last year in her OTT debut Bestseller, where she plays a simple girl from a small town (Meetu Mathur), who is an ardent admirer of renowned author Tahir Wazir (Arjan Bajwa) and requests his assistance in telling her own tale. Speaking of her OTT debut, she reveals how she truly enjoys playing a grey character and the challenges that come with it. “I would love to be offered more grey characters. I loved Bestseller because I got to play a layered character with different shades. I’ve played emotionally monosyllabic characters in most of my films. And I’ve done them for reasons that seemed right then. Sometimes I still do them for reasons that seem

right. Like, you want to be in that commercial film. But the truth is that the joy I get from playing grey characters is incomparable.” She adds that Mithun Da remembered her even after the intervening 12 years. Mithun even told her he’d indeed prove ‘lucky’ for her, as whoever has debuted with him, has gone on to play a long innings in films. “I thought I’d do one-two movies and go back to making music. But I slowly fell in love with the process. I loved the craft and wanted to get better at it. When we met again, I told him he was right. It was nice meeting him and working with him again. It was nostalgic.”

Shifting between so many activities is sure to be tedious and we wonder how her partner Santanu Hazarika deals with it all. She is quick to answer as she shares, “I think he lives like that as well; he is an artist and he is creating worlds. And he also travels more than me sometimes because he is the social butterfly of the equation and I am more of an introvert. But he loves people and talking about art. He sometimes has a crazier life than me, but I think it works.” n

STRIKING IT RICH Bhuvan Arora

WHO HAS MADE HIS NAME WITH FARZI, IS THE REAL DEAL INDEED, FINDSTANISHA BHATTACHARYA

Bhuvan Arora made his debut with Shuddh Desi Romance (2013). The aspiring actor has since then appeared in films like Tevar (2015), Naam Shabana (2017) and OTT Series like The Test Case (2018), and recently Farzi (2023) alongside Shahid Kapoor. His performance in the thriller revolving around counterfeit currency is being touted as his breakout performance. Like every actor who dreams of making it big in showbiz, Bhuvan too confesses that he’s the biggest Shah Rukh Khan fan ever. Recalling his growing up days, he says he used to mimic every SRK dialogue in front of his parents,”I still remember I saw Pardes and Shah Rukh Khan used to be called little master by Mr Amrish Puri in that film, and I forced my family to call me little master.” He briefly met his idol a couple of times and it’s his ardent wish to work with SRK. Bhuvan says he’s manifesting it to happen soon.

Bhuvan is a trained actor from FTII and did his first advertisement while still at the institute. It was an ad for a medical product. He was asked to come in formals and given an audition. To his delight, he got selected. Ask him about his first film, Shuddh Desi Romance, and he takes time to piece together his memories. He had actually gone for another audition, he met Bhumi Pednekar, who was a casting assistant back then. That role didn’t transpire but he was offered a small part in the Sushant Singh

SHAHID’S LIKE AN ELDER BROTHER TO ME. WE HAD A GREAT RAPPORT. I USED TO LOOK UP TO HIM FOR EVERYTHING. HE HAS WAY MORE EXPERIENCE THAN ME. HE GAVE ME AMPLE ROOM TO PERFORM

of his character, Sunny. So the general audience might think of it as a character, as a friend. Yeah, but we, as the makers, think of you as a parallel lead on the show,” he reveals. His onscreen camaraderie with

getting the audience rooting for them. Bhuvan agrees as he comments, “I think Raj and DK are experts in bromance. They also have a bromance going on between them in real life. So for every new thing that they do, they take a piece of their own friendship and transplant it into their project.” While he’s been flooded with compliments and has gained street cred after Farzi, we wonder whether it has resulted in more doors being opened for him. He laughs and says everyone calls him Feroz after

Rajput starrer. “They didn’t lie to me. They clearly told me it was a small role, that of the hero’s friend but people were going to remember me for sure. I liked the honesty and took a chance.”

He recalls how he was offered his role in Farzi and initially, had his inhibitions about it. Having played the role of a loyal friend for years now, he did not want to get absorbed in yet another cliched portrayal. But directors Raj and DK convinced him about the potential of his character in the series and conveyed to him that it’s more of a parallel lead. Bhuvan recalls, “I went and I spoke to Raj sir and DK sir. They said, well, you’ll have to trust us on this. One will ask you what you’ve done in life after Farzi’s release.

Shahid Kapoor is a much bigger star and the story is told from the perspective

Shahid Kapoor, the lead in the series, has been hailed as one of the best aspects of the show. Speaking of his bond with Shahid, he fondly says, “We had this equation going on between us and he’s chilled out. He’s like an elder brother to me. We had a great rapport. I used to look up to him for everything. He has way more experience than me. He gave me ample room to perform. He made sure that as a team we gave our best to the project.”

Raj and DK have been praised for their brilliant portrayal of bromance on screen. Be it Srikant or JK’s blossoming friendship in The Family Man or Sunnyand Firoz’s bonding in Frazi, they have always cracked the code when it comes to creating memorable characters and

Farzi and all this adulation feels great. “Professionally, a lot of things have changed. People have reached out with a lot more work. I am choosing my scripts. I’m reading a lot of stuff. I’m meeting a lot of respected filmmakers. That’s about it.”

He’s aware of how long he’s had to hustle to bag a role like Firoz and isn’t in a hurry to sign things. “It won’t be a wise decision for me to sign things in a hurry. Hence, I’m taking my time before signing something new,” he reveals. He says OTT has opened up more venues for everyone and therefore he wants to explore different genres as there is more opportunity for that now. Says he, “An actor is always on the lookout for variety, as it helps him hone his craft. I’m open to all kinds of roles as I want to showcase my versatility.”

Amit Majithia

With diverse businesses, ranging from travel to fashion and cricket to nightlife, Amit Majithia has established a significant presence in Dubai's entrepreneurial landscape, providing exceptional experiences to residents and visitors alike. A cricket genius, he is not only the Brand MD of CBTF Speed News, but his notable businesses also include Exotic Holidays by CBTF, a renowned tours and travel company, and the clothing brand, Model Madness. But while the leading businessman is known for his acumen when it comes to moolah matters, he is equally known for his passion for music. In fact, as the owner of BCC Music Factory, Dubai, a music production company that has launched its innings with popular celebrities like Palak Muchhal, RCR, Adah Sharma, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Afsana Khan, Simran Kaur, amongst others, he has always encouraged new talents in UAE.

As the owner of some of the most popular clubs and lounges in Dubai - Tashan, Super20, Legends Restobar, and Tsunami - both entertainment and music have always been his USP. However, Majithia is quick to point out that for him music is a passion and not business. Not only does he believe in providing platforms to young and upcoming talents, but has also been ruling the markets with his unique concepts like the most recently held 'Bhaichara Night' that promoted and celebrated Indian as well as Pakistani artists. 'Following what your heart desires and staying highly dedicated to it often makes for a successful business,' he says as we talk about his incredible success story and inspiring journey. STORY

RENOWNED BUSINESSMAN AMIT MAJITHIA IN CONVERSATION WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF HIS NEW CLUB LEGENDS BY BCC AND HIS PASSION FOR MUSIC

YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED YOUR NEW NIGHTCLUB LEGEND, WHICH IS DOING VERY WELL. WHAT IS THE USP OF YOUR CLUBS?

I believe that a club is successful because of three basic things – the food, the ambience, and entertainment and I take a personal interest in each one of them and am totally involved! We try to keep our clubs unique in all aspects. So I believe that we have the best in interiors, in fact all my four clubs have a different ambience. Even when it comes to food, we keep innovating and find what works best with the guests. When it comes to entertainment, we have redefined the way in which music is perceived here. Now it has more respectability and we have made it more family oriented. Every month we have one or two renowned artists performing and every week we have different bands playing each day, so

every day there’s a new music flavour. Sometimes it’s Sufi, sometimes it’s Qawali, and sometimes desi dance nights. In three of our clubs, we host the ‘India Art Club’ which was earlier referred to as the ‘Indian Night Club’ and we have changed the perception of people towards these night clubs.

AS A BUSINESSMAN, YOU ARE A MAN OF NUMBERS, BUT ALSO HARBOUR A DEEP PASSION FOR MUSIC, TELL US MORE ABOUT IT. I’m a Gujarati and have a natural knack for business and an inborn sense of profit and loss plus now with experience, it’s gotten better. But to be honest, I don’t look at music as a business. When I make a video or a single, for me that is purely out of my love for music and at that time I’m not thinking whether it will make money or not. I simply do it because I enjoy

58 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2023

that process of creating and celebrating art. That extends to my ventures in the restaurant business as well through which I support music. So, while it’s easy to see whether it will be profitable or not, instead of focussing on making a profit through my music label, I try that at least the losses are at a minimum. I really want to take this forward and be able to reach as many people as possible. The idea is to encourage new talent, new faces that start with us should go on to become popular stars. Whether they perform at our club, or release their music through our record company BCC Music Factory, if they are well deserving they should get a chance to progress.

YOU HAVE VENTURED INTO DIRECTING THESE MUSIC VIDEOS, AND YOU ARE ALSO FEATURING IN THEM?

This was something that came from my passion for

music. So I had featured in one song and then I am now featuring in two more songs.

ANY PLANS OF GETTING INTO THE OTT SPACE?

I have a web-series in the works. We have the story, dialogues, everything in place, but I want to launch it on a very grand scale and that will take some time.

WHAT IS THE VISION FORWARD? Well, it’s clear when it comes to entertainment. We have just successfully launched Legends by BCC. Then I have partnered for MIC Night. It’s already started in India and we are bringing to Dubai the ‘Music in the City - MIC’. Then every week we will have the Broken Hearts Night! Then there are the other projects –One is our modern fashion wear that was

WhenImakeavideoorasingle,formethatis purelyoutofmyloveformusicandatthattime I’mnotthinkingwhetheritwillmakemoneyor not.IsimplydoitbecauseIenjoythatprocessof creatingandcelebratingart.

started six months ago. The concept again is very unique and you get bespoke designer clothes right in the comfort of your home. We are also looking at Dubai Local, which we hope will be a one-stop shop for everything in Dubai.

AS A BUSINESSMAN, YOU’VE ALSO BEEN A RISK-TAKER. SO, WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LEARNING YOU HAVE HAD, ANY RULES? A lot of rules that I have learnt from experience, but there are more don’ts than dos in it (laughs). When you have tried almost 15 to 20 businesses and made a loss in 1 or 2, you know what went wrong there. And it could be a wrong location, or a wrong timing! But apart from that I believe that you should never trust blindly and be very involved in your business.

HOW HAS DUBAI BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN YOUR GROWTH?

As a businessman my growth in India was 30 per cent, but in Dubai it was 70 per cent. If you have an idea and are ready to work then Dubai supports you completely in terms of its opportunities. You should be able to spot it and then make use of it. I think the credit goes to the rulers that economically and financially they have made the currency so stable that it gives you the confidence to invest and prosper.

WHAT IS THAT ONE ADVICES YOU’D GIVE TO PEOPLE WHO COME TO DUBAI WITH A DREAM OF STARTING THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

I think if you are willing to work hard then Dubai will have work for you. What I personally believe in doing is that I offer my employees a per cent of partnership that gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility. So, good or bad, the outcome also puts them in a more responsible position. And it works.

Tell us about your connection with Dubai…

I have so many memories… Dubai has been like a metamorphosis of who I am today and I credit the city with every single learning as a human being or as a professional. There is a deep sense of nostalgia and attachment. I used to work in Microsoft here, when I first decided to pursue acting. If you’ve lived in Dubai, you won’t leave this place, it becomes a part of you and this place keeps calling you back. There are

so many elements of Dubai that make me so proud of this place. It has made me a better person, a kinder person I come here with my arms wide open. It’s a sense of embrace. I don’t need big, I need simple things. Like even when I am back here, more than the big mall shopping, I’m like give me my karak and my steamed corn yaar! One more beautiful thing that Dubai has given me is the power of saying ‘Alhamdulillah’ and ‘Inshallah’. There’s a sense of gratitude. So I feel like I have gained these two very strong pillars that it

Actor-host Kubbra Sait has come a long way since she ditched her cushy job in Dubai to take baby steps in Bollywood more than a decade ago. But it was not until her bold role as Kukoo in Sacred Games that shot her to fame and there’s been no looking back since then for the performer who’s gone on to star in several movies and hit web shows both here and internationally. We caught up with Kubbra in Dubai and over a candid conversation we spoke to the spunky actress about her book, her inspiring choices and her love for Dubai

will be, it will happen.

You’ve been a part of Sacred Games, Farzi, Foundation, Gully Boy, Jawaani Jaaneman, The Trial, amongst others. You also have an autobiography that’s been lauded for being very empowering. You’ve come a long way with so many landmarks and having made many brave choices professionally and personally… And I’m very grateful to recognize these landmarks and celebrate the smaller wins. Because I don’t look at my acting career to be of 13 years, I look at my acting career to be within the last five - six years. That’s when I have had the opportunity to work with Raj and DK, with Anurag Kashyap, with Navdeep Singh. I’ve worked with Suparn Verma who’s the director of The Trial. And I’m just grateful for the energies that I’ve come to work with… Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, I’m working with Kajol, Kay Kay.

What was the game changer for you?

A 100 per cent Sacred Games

Without a doubt. But I feel like every job that I have done has led me to Sacred Games and has eventually become the reason why I got a Sacred Games. The gears definitely switched post that. And people started saying, like “OMG! Ye to humari Kubbra hai!” So, main jinko humara nahi bolti thi, vo log mujhe humara bol rahe hain. And it came with a common shared consensus that no

one’s done something so brave. So, this energy of being brave doesn’t come from me. It comes from everyone who has supported me in this journey even without realizing that they were supporting me.

Tell us more about your autobiography, ‘Open Book: Not Quite a Memoir’

I think there’s no greater strength that one can hold than the truth. When we fail to recognize who we are and what are the things that shaped us, then I think we’re living in some sort of a crazy black mirror loop. But you can only progress and make a change when you accept ki jo hua mere saath vo sahi nahi tha Rona hai to ro lo, but never forget that you are the captain of your ship, and you are the one taking it forward, so don’t hold back. Writing the book - more than a professional endeavour, turned out to be a personal win. And that has allowed me to embrace life for what it is today. So, there was never a topic that came out to me and turned into a taboo sort of a thing. Whether it was my first role that encompassed nudity on screen or abuse, whether it was me starting, not once, but several times over and over again. There were so many chapters in my life which became chapters in my book wherein I felt that I was never alone. Because these are things that don’t happen to a person in isolation. It happens to us as humanity as a whole. So, there were so many women who came up to me and said ‘you too? Me too’! So, that moment, it normalizes the conversation, it humbles you. Also, there’s a sense of candour. Like I had my takeaway, you read and tell me your takeaway and have that dialogue open.

Have you thought of starting a podcast or a talk show?

I think I’m going to become the Ellen DeGeneres of this country one day. I will. I said it here first! She inspires me.

Are you open to all kinds of roles or do you prefer roles that somehow reflect your

own self?

Definitely all kinds of roles, because what’s the fun if I’m only doing things that are an extension of me! In fact, I’m discovering so much of myself through my roles and these characters I play. As an actor, you always have to find yourself in that part. So even if I find myself in a situation that’s not me, I need to find out how would I deal with it and then make that separation. So I feel like being an actor is such a blessing, I find it so amazing to discover a new facet of myself with every single role and evolve along the way.

And there are many more platforms for all these stories to be told today…

Absolutely. You have so many amazing writers today that are telling great stories and we are facilitating their stories. And we’re in such an amazing time that we have so many listeners and platforms both. We couldn’t tell stories if we didn’t have listeners, we couldn’t visualise stories if we didn’t have viewers. So we’re in a fantastic time.

Have you had to compromise and go ahead with a role even if you weren’t convinced of it completely as a character?

Let’s be honest. Sometimes you give in because you have to pay the bills (laughs). And I don’t regret any of those choices. Like I could not have had a successful career in Mumbai if I was still thinking ‘oh what’s going to happen

to me if I left a stable job in Dubai?’ So make a choice and stand by it. I feel that is true for any decision in real life.

Besides acting, you are also a celebrated name in hosting. How do you keep stable juggling so many different roles?

I remember in acting class, I was told that there are many people doing many jobs on a film set - there are technical jobs and creative jobs - but only an actor is doing the emotional one. So, to be able to manoeuvre your emotions in the right direction, it’s important to keep your emotions refilling and refuelling yourself. That’s what I do in the waiting period. That’s where I host events, that’s where I do yoga, that’s when I travel, that’s when I have new experiences and take my holidays. I do something that fulfils me emotionally as a human being so that when I get the opportunity, I can do it well.

Has there been any role that left you emotionally drained?

Phara from my show Foundation for sure. There was so much change. And I’m not even talking about the physical training and the looks. I was living outside my country, outside my home and in the middle of the pandemic for eight months. I missed my friends my family, my food and familiarity. It was 16 degrees, and endless blue water, and beaches but you can’t go swimming. So, it was a very different conditioning phase for me. I literally started with a blank canvas. And to allow yourself to do something that’s beyond your fear. Like I was in a room with Jared Harris and Daniel MacPherson and Terrence Mann who’s like a Tony Awards winner and to do your own thing. But it was also exhilarating as an actor.

What are your upcoming shows?

I have a show with Prakash Jha. And then I have a show with Navdeep Singh for Amazon Prime.
