t is monsoon season in India as I write this editorial. One of the most visibly transformational climates we experience. The leaves turn sap green and the smell of wet earth we call petrichor is well savoured. In Dubai though, the sun shines nice and bright with the occasional star visits be it rockstar and actor. Farhan Akhtar and superstar and legend Kamal Haasan. On our digital cover we have the beautiful Waluscha Sousa. The stunning actor and anchor who hosted the Filmfare ME Achievers Night, is a mother of three,a popular host on TV and live shows and wears all her hats with elan and grace. After her film debut with SRK in ’Fan’, she was seen with Salman Khan in a special appearance in ‘Antim’ and. Mohanlal’s ‘Lucifer’. She will now be seen with. Bobby. Deol in an Abbas-Mastan film and in a new web series titled ‘Tannaav’. Watch her full interview on Filmfare ME YouTube. The Shamshera trailer launch happened in Dubai on July 22nd and Ranbir Kapoor warmed our hearts with a heartfelt message during its Mumbai promotions, talking of his wife Alia Bhatt. With SRK completing thirty years in Hindi cinema and the release date of ’Pathan’ set to January 25th, 2023, we are all set for a new season of entertainment and. cinema. Anupam Kher completed his 525th film which is aptly called ‘The Signature’. Pakistani actor and singer Junaid Khan released his song, that, he states is a love story, titled ‘Yaadein’. As cinema and web serials continue to excite our senses with fresher content, we are walking towards a new era of audience led topics. With the. OTT space creating innovative content every other day and cinema creating more room for stories said on a larger canvas, this is truly the time for writers and content. creators to thrive. Here’s to the silent community of wordsmiths who kindle our senses and provide us with entertainment to savour.

f there’s one sector in UAE that’s not only bounced back faster than expected post the Covid19 pandemic, but is also shattering records, then it’s the travel sector. Thanks to the school summer break, the Eid Al Adha holiday, easing off the travel restrictions, and travel enthusiasts looking at earning air miles once again after a lull post pandemic, air traffic is peaking like never before. In fact, witnessing one of the busiest summer travel seasons and recording one of the highest number of passengers in a day, airlines and airports have been issuing travel advisories urging travellers to book tickets well in advance, as well as requesting passengers to check-in earlier than the usually stipulated time. While the summer heat is playing truant as expected, what wasn’t expected was the hot temperature failing to act as deterrents for the inbound tourists. And that’s where Dubai scores yet again. The city is a haven for tourists, especially the shoppers. After all the Dubai Summer Surprises are all the buzz! What’s more, with the extensive list of tourist fun spots and summer activities, there’s something for everyone to keep them engaged in indoor activities. From watching blockbuster movies to skiing, this city definitely scores brownie points. Talking of brownie points, I can’t help noticing the mushrooming of so many new eating joints across the city and the old ones too revamping their menus to accommodate desi flavours! I recently met New York based Michelin awarded chef Vikas Khanna. The globally renowned chef was here in the city to release his 38th book ‘Sacred Foods of India’ – rare collector’s item - where he chronicles the recipes of prasads and foods across the top pilgrimage spots. That he has also launched the book ‘phygitally’ with the NFTs being the future of investments is a first for the chef and the industry. I had the honour and pleasure to interview the chef, Vikas Khanna and get a glimpse of the book ahead of the launch and I must day that each unique recipe found its way into the book, is worth a try. Read all about the successful launch in the pages ahead. Meanwhile, stay hydrated, keep healthy and safe travels!

It is like work, chill, and having fun.” Speaking on her bond with Ajay Devgn, Tabu said, “The fact that we have known each other since we were like 13-years old, it’s become like family. KARAN JOHAR’S TAKE ON THE SUCCESS OF PAN-INDIAN FILMS Karan Johar was recently asked about the success of pan-India films which we have witnessed this year. PRIYANKA CHOPRA JONAS CALLS ALIA BHATT, AND KATRINA KAIF TWO OF THE TOP ACTRESSES IN INDIA Priyanka Chopra Jonas is on a roll. The actress, who got back to work a day after welcoming her’ baby girl home, is looking at a packed slate of upcoming projects. One of those projects is the highly anticipated film Jee Le Zaraa. The road movie, directed by Farhan Akhtar, will feature Priyanka alongside Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif. And now Priyanka has opened up about why she chose to join the film. In an interview with a leading entertainment publication, Priyanka Chopra Jonas called Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif the “top actresses” in India. She said, “I’m doing a movie in India now with two of the top actresses in the country, Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt, and the three of us decided we wanted to do a movie together and partner together to produce it.” Priyanka Chopra Jonas is currently filming for her upcoming series, Citadel, in which she stars alongside Eternals’ fame Richard Madden. The Russo Brothers-helmed show is a spy thriller. She is also attached to star in It’s All Coming Back to Me alongside Sam Heughan.

Karan Johar’s 50th birthday bash saw the creme-dela-creme of Bollywood in attendance, and it was a night full of glitz and glamour. Ranbir Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor were also on the list and made chic appearances on the red carpet. Alia Bhatt, who is busy shooting for her Hollywood project, Heart of Stone, alongside Jamie Dornan and Gal Gadot, couldn’t make it, unfortunately. Ever since Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s marriage, Neetu Kapoor has been repeatedly asked how her “bahu” is doing, and she has warm-heartedly responded about her well-being. This time, when she was asked about Alia, she had a rather funny response. The paparazzi were heard asking her, “Bahu ke baare mein kuch batao na.” To which Neetu jokingly replied, “Phir bahu. Abhi bahu bahut kushal mangal hai and she is very happy. Ab aage badho.” Hilarious.

THE MOST POPULAR GLOW TREATMENTPROFHILO PROFHILO IS AN INJECTABLE SKIN REMODELLING TREATMENT CONTAINING ONE OF THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATIONS OF HYALURONIC ACID (HA, ESPECIALLY FORMULATED FOR PEOPLE WHOSE SKIN LACKS VOLUME AND ELASTICITY. RATHER THAN JUST PLUMPING AND FILLING WRINKLES, THE SLOW RELEASE OF HA, IT STIMULATES PRODUCTION OF COLLAGEN AND ELASTIN AND IMPROVES SKIN TONE, HYDRATION AND THE APPEARANCE OF FINE LINES. THE RESULT IS IMPROVED SKIN QUALITY LASTING FOR UP TO 6 MONTHS.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

It draws and holds water from your body, and acts as a hydrator rather than a filler. This makes it fantastic for those with tired, dull-looking skin, transforming it into firm and luminous skin. This effect takes place within 3-5 days of treatment. Over the next few weeks collagen and elastin production is stimulated, producing a secondary effect of skin tightening. This is useful because levels of collagen, elastin and Hyaluronic Acid in the skin rapidly drop from the age of 30, resulting in signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and lack-lustre skin. Profhilo acts to reverse some of these changes.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVE?

Profhilo is injected just below the skin’s surface over 2 sessions 4 weeks apart. It is absorbed within a 2cm radius of its injection site, so to treat the face only 10 injection points are needed in total.

WHAT ABOUT RECOVERY? which did phenomenal business. These films have raised the bar of Indian films, telling us that our standards can be so massive and we can reach so far ahead.” That’s a laudable thought, indeed.

The downtime following a treatment is minimal, and you should be able to return to normal ‘light’ daily activities immediately after your procedure. Avoid physical strain and sports on the first day and don’t have a sauna or steamy bath for the first few days and intense sunlight.

If it’s Maniesh Paul on the mic, then it’s got to be fun unlimited! Whether it’s his camaraderie with the stars on stage or his performances on the big screen and small, there’s never a dull moment around this entertainer who’s quite a rage internationally too. Winning hearts and accolades in equal measures, the mostpopular and much-loved host never fails to create memorable moments. Currently basking in the praise coming his way for the big screen outing Jug Jugg Jeeyo, the star is thrilled with the response. He’s in the middle of shooting a new project and his excitement is palpable, as I catch up for an exclusive interview. Talking about his journey from being a simple Delhi boy coming from a non-film background to now being a part of Bollywood, “I’ve been living my dream,” Maniesh Paul tells me, and also reveals his secret of creating magic on stage! -Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

You’re getting a fantastic response for Jug Jugg Jeeyo? Absolutely! And I’m so happy and excited. First of all, it’s a dream come true for anybody to share the screen with Anil Sir (Anil Kapoor) and Neetu Ma’am (Neetu Kapoor), especially for a boy who’s come from Delhi and has no filmi background. So it’s been a wonderful experience. Varun (Varun Dhawan) is a friend, but yes working with Varun, Kiara (Kiara Advani) and Prajakta (Prajakta Koli), it’s been amazing. I am really happy that the dialogues have caught on, people are happy, they are enjoying watching it on the big screen, I have been getting such lovely messages, so yes, it’s a great feeling. Also every actor wishes to do atleast one film with Dharma (Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions), so that’s a big tick off my list, but I hope it’s just my beginning with Dharma and there’ll be more to follow. You share an amazing camaraderie with all the stars, and your stage chemistry especially with Salman Khan is always such a hit? I feel blessed that all actors that I work with, many of whom I had met as a fan, then joined them as a co-actor, today they are all family! I feel happy that I share a great rapport with all of them. That’s what we work for. Whenever I am hosting, I try and make everybody feel comfortable and that is what they also feel now. With Salman Sir, the rapport is something else, I don’t know how that magic happens, it’s never planned or anything, but it happens. Yes, you hosting Salman’s Da-Bangg tour at Expo 2020 Dubai earlier this year was as much a highlight as the star performers… Well, I take it as a compliment but I never let it get to my head. Sunta hoon, enjoy karta hoon bas. At the end of the day it’s Salman Sir’s show and I’m just a part of the show. But yes, I feel happy that the part I’m supposed to play, I think I’m doing a decent job, Sir is happy, audience is happy, so all good! I remember when we came for the show for the second time in Dubai, I thought that people had already seen it, but it was still a house-full, so it was a happy moment. Back in Delhi, had you ever thought that you would be rubbing shoulders with Amitabh Bachchan, sharing stage with Katrina Kaif, dancing with Salman Khan… Nahin yaar maine kabhi bhi nahin socha tha. I am an ardent Amitabh Sir fan and today it feels so great that he tweets with my name saying, ‘Maniesh this one is for you, wish you all the luck for Jug Jugg Jeeyo.’ You know these are the high points for me! I remember back in Delhi, sitting at home in Malviya Nagar, I would watch his films, watch him at award nights and I never thought that he would ever be tweeting for me. I would see SRK (Shah Rukh Khan) Sir, Salman Sir’s films, but I never thought that I would be sharing this camaraderie with them, so it feels great. I feel that kuch acha kiya hoga pichle janam mein that God has been so kind. Waise being on the cover of Filmfare Middle East is another big tick off my list (laughs) and it’s my first international cover too, so it’s all the more special. At what point did you feel that you had made it in the industry? I remember I used to host Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and in those days I was doing a lot of hosting. There was a July 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 11

COVER STORY time when I was hosting KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) with Bachchan Sir and I remember when I went to meet him, the moment he took my name, the first time he said, ‘Maniesh kaise hain aap,’ I said bas this is stamped now. Today is the day I have arrived, because Mr Bachchan said my name. So I was like, ‘wow’. I was so thrilled, I called my mom and said, I met Bachchan Sir and he took my name, so yeah that was it. And what was the game-changer for you? That would be Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa definitely. It changed a lot of things for me. Before Jhalak, I was just another guy hosting a reality show, but after JDJ, people started noticing me, they started knowing me more, so that definitely changed a lot for me. How do you look back at the journey so far? I think the journey has been fantastic, I don’t regret anything. Yes, there have been highs and lows, but that

is how the journey is supposed to be. If the journey is only highs, then I don’t think that is a great journey. It’s in fact, the lows that really teach you a lot. They’ve been a part of my journey as well, but I have really enjoyed my lows too. Honestly, whatever work and films I have done, you know, I feel happy about it, I feel them as a part of me, a part of who I am today, and each one has in some way contributed to where I am today. The kind of love I have got from the audience, the kind of love I keep getting from my audience, the kind of love I am getting for Jug Jugg Jeeyo, all of it. When you look back at how far you have come, is it like a pat on your back… There’s a lot of gratitude for the work coming my way, but I don’t think much about the success. My family keeps me grounded. My wife Sanyukta, she really is my anchor. There are times when the adulation and success can sway you, but she keeps me rooted. Also I feel happy, but don’t let all the success or stardom get to my head. It’s there today,

it might not be there tomorrow, so the best approach is to be steady for it and with it. I just take it easy. I feel happy, I look up and say thank you God and move on to the next one. Agar main last success ka sochta rahoonga toh aagey nahin badh paaoonga. So I don’t think much about. There’s gratitude is all. In a film, you have a defined character graph to follow and a director to take you through it all, but on stage you are completely on your own. So Maniesh Paul the actor or Maniesh Paul the host, what’s your preference? I can’t choose one, I love both. I am a greedy actor, so I want to do films, I want to do shows, I want to host also, I want to do web-series too, so I want to do everything. And yes, in movies there’s always a director who is there to guide you and on stage I am just on my own. I don’t know how the audience will react or what’s going to happen! But God has been really kind. Something just happens and it clicks. I feel that when I’m on stage some magic happens because I don’t have a script. I don’t prepare, I just go with the flow and when I come back I don’t know what I have done on the stage. But I know one thing for sure that the people are in splits.

W

ith Salman Sir, the rapport is something else, I don’t know how that magic happens, it’s never planned or anything, but it happens!

Yes, we have seen you work that Maniesh magic when you hosted the Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night in 2021. So, what’s the secret, what is the one thing running in your mind right before you step on that stage? Seriously there’s no secret! I’m like a baby when I come on the stage, I have no clue what I am going to say or do. People looking at me at times may even feel that he’s looking lost, like kuch samajh nahin aa raha hai, but like I said, the moment I start there is something that happens, and it’s like somebody just takes over and I love that somebody and I hope he always takes over that stage. All I know is that when I go on stage, the people should have fun, I should not offend anybody and everybody should go back home happy, feeling great about the night and the organisers should feel that they made the right choice (laughs). How do you maintain that balance of being funny but not offending anyone? Has it ever happened that you have come close to crossing that line? Honestly, thankfully, that has never happened when I have crossed the line or offended anyone. I always feel that the filters are very important especially in today’s times. You should use your filters, know what not to say and where to draw the line. All these things are very important. I do take care of all that. I always say that hosting is not about making fun of people, it’s about making everybody happy. When I host I always do it like it’s my family around, and we are there to have a great time. Thankfully that warmth extends to the audience, and they feel happy when they go back home and I get so many lovely messages, saying that I was great on stage, that they had a great time, that they were in splits. So these are the things I take care of and these messages are what make it all worthwhile! Do you ever get nervous on stage or in July 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 13

presence of any star? I am always nervous! People think that yeh toh jaata hai aur sixer maarta hai stage pe, but meri hawa tight hui hoti hai, main aaj bhi bahut darta hoon! Every time I am in front of Salman Sir, Bachchan Sir, I do feel nervous at times. But yes, like I said, somehow there is this somebody who takes over when I am on stage, and then its sorted. How do you manage to always be so pepped up? Are you a very positive person, or is it that you mask your lows? There are times when I am in a different zone, but I feel that we are entertainers and what’s going on in my life - good or bad - is not supposed to affect my audience, because for my audience I am Maniesh Paul and that’s who I should be for them, not the guy that I am at home or otherwise. We actors too have highs and lows, we have good days and bad, different kinds of situations at home, at work, but I feel that when my audience is watching me, they should always have a big smile on their face and that’s what I focus on. And even if I am in a bad mood, the moment I see the stage or I’m shooting, everything is gone. So I think it’s the power of my audience and all the love that they have given me that everything else just ceases to matter in that time and everything is good. What’s the draw as an actor? The role should be entertaining and as an actor there should be something interesting for me to do. I don’t want to do any film just for the heck of it. As an actor I like being challenged. I would want to leave Maniesh Paul, stop being him and be someone else instead on the screen for some time and get a new flavor, so for me that is exciting. Will you be making your debut on OTT soon? Yes, I am working on something but I can’t reveal anything. But yes you’ll hear the good news soon. Tell us more about visiting Dubai? Whenever I come to the Middle East, it’s like coming home! The love that I get here is just so overwhelming. I promise that I will keep entertaining my audiences here in Dubai and the Middle East like this forever, and thank you for all the love. You had a really funny incident with a female fan isn’t it? Yes, there was this one incident at the airport when a lady bit my hand! Like she literally wanted a piece of me. So, I was at the airport and I had a flight to catch. I clicked pictures with some fans and I wanted to leave, but she would not let go of my arm. I tried pulling my hand away but she bit me! So yeah, it’s literally, khoon pasiney ki kamaai. But right hand pe ho gaya abhi left hand available hai (laughs). On a serious note, we actors do enjoy the all the fan-love and the beautiful fan moments. At the end of the day, we work hard for that. Fans hone chahiye, unka pyaar hona chahiye. 14 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2022

FASHION & BEAUTY

POWER &GLORY Manish Malhotra remains as gung-ho as ever over style and fashion after 30 years as he was when he was starting out, finds Mayukh Majumdar

M

anish Malhotra’s power lies in the fact that he is instantly recognisable. We’re used to celebrities being mobbed by their fans but very few fashion designers enjoy the kind of fame that Manish has. He won Filmfare’s inaugural Best Costume Design award in 1996 for Rangeela and you could credit him with seamlessly merging the twin worlds of fashion and film. Also, he brought about the death of the supermodel when he began getting his A-list celeb buddies to walk as showstoppers on the ramp. A designer, a costume designer and now a director how do you manage to play so many roles? I love what I do; ventures and collaborations are a part of the journey. I view fashion as an integrated look that encompasses design, styling, and makeup. My love for cinema enabled me to create some iconic looks on-screen while mounting a whole brand simultaneously. Now I’m fulfilling my childhood dream of sitting on a director’s chair, bringing the magic of fashion, films, and fun to life. You always seem like you’re up to try new things, open to new ideas - is that a learned experience or were you always like that? I have always been like that. I love change. Change for me means moving ahead with the times. It never hurts to try something new. With the required efforts and long-standing experience, I can transition from one segment to another while maintaining my signature aesthetics. Being in fashion, I’ve always looked at the bigger picture beyond fashion. My fashion inspiration is the outcome of innovative research, which in turn is an essential part of my designing process. Trends come and go, but what do you think truly stays? I don’t know about trends; what I did in 2000 is trending now. I run my business out of pure passion; the lines between my work and play have blurred. My work trips are often accompanied by personal recreations, such as travelling, discovering cultures, art, architecture, and meeting old friends and new people. Every experience is linked to my design expressions. However, my wearer’s delightful personality brings out multiple variants of philosophy. Who is the one Bollywood celebrity you think has a good sense of style? Everyone has a unique style and persona; I couldn’t name anyone specific. They’re all lovely. However, for me, Rekhaji will always be that classic beauty with style that is eternal.

ALIA BHATT TALKS ABOUT HER ROLE IN GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI AND MORE IN A CANDID CHAT WITH MAYUKH MAJUMDAR

INTERVIEW

I HAVE BECOME MORE PRIVATE. I FEEL LIKE THERE’S WAY MORE POWER AND IMPACT IN JUST BEING SILENT AND JUST DOING THE WORK AND NOT REALLY CREATING ONE BIG HOO-HA

Gangubai Kathiawadi

Everyone and their mother is privy to the fact that Alia wedded Ranbir in Bandra on April 14 this year. Breaking from Bollywood tradition, the wedding was a simple and intimate affair. It created a lot of media hype, to say the least, for three days and we still see ourselves reminiscing over it. But we aren’t here to talk about her dream wedding, Instead we’re decoding her other dream, -- that of working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She’s completed a decade in Bollywood and her dream of working with SLB finally came true with Gangubai Kathiawadi. It’s a dream that she had since she was nine years old

when she went to audition for a role in Black. “Yeh heroine hai, yeh child actor nahi, yeh toh heroine hai,” Bhansali had said about her then. 20 years later, she’s playing the titular role in a Bhansali film. It’s said that her performance in the song Dholida from Gangubai Kathiawadi gave him goosebumps. “When she danced in Dholida, I thought there was an actor who’d finally transcended. It’s a very gooseflesh moment for me to even talk about it and think about it – that you transcend where you are, you forget all space, you forget where you are, you forget who’s in

front of you, cameras, what you look like, what you feel. She just became one with that character and expressed all her angst and all that she had gone through in that one song. It’s a song that I will take to my grave. If there is any shot that I want to be played when I breathe my last – it would be Alia doing that shot because it is completely the best thing that I have seen an actor do in a very, very long time,” SLB said during a press conference at the Berlinale.

T

hat’s high praise indeed coming from SLB. Many would say that Alia wasn’t

the obvious casting choice for Bhansali to play Gangubai, the feared and revered madame of Kamathipura. But SLB saw something in her and only had Alia in mind for the role. It took her a while to start seeing herself as Gangubai. “It takes about a week sometimes, sometimes two days, sometimes one schedule for you to start being one with the character. We started with this section where she had not become Gangubai, she was just Gangu. There is a whole transition to her age and everything. Initially there was still a lot of pull and push with the character and the voice and the sound and

this and that. I remember there was a scene where I think Sir (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) was happy and I could tell that okay, that was the first time he was happy and felt I have started to understand the character now.”

B

ut becoming Gangubai wasn’t easy. Bhansali wanted the dialogues to be hard-hitting but Alia’s eyes to be vulnerable. He wanted the pain to reflect in her eyes but the swagger to be visible in her body language. Alia admits that she found this dichotomy and contrast to be difficult. “There’s a scene where Gangubai speaks in front of so many people in

24 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2022

in just being silent and just doing the work and not really creating one big hooha. So, maybe earlier I had a jumpy kind of energy and now I am like yaa, I will do what I need to do and I don’t need to kind of plaster it all,” she confesses.

B

ut she’d be lying if she said that she isn’t affected at times. Despite showcasing her acting chops in films like Highway, Raazi, Dear Zindagi and Gully Boy, she is still dogged by allegations of nepotism and having gotten everything on a platter. “I just don’t understand when people assume that. It really unsettles me to think that people think that anything that is achieved happens by fluke. It all happens with hard work. You can rob people of praise but you can’t deny them the hard work that they put in,” she points out. One wonders how much weight those dainty shoulders have

mere followers badh jayenge’ and all. So, if I put up a picture, whatever picture it may be, I am doing it because of what I’m feeling at that moment, and that’s it, there’s no other explanation for it. The other side to it is the pressure of having this perfect life because like I said everybody has bad days and you have to start speaking about the fact that it’s normal to have a bad day. You can’t always look Insta ready,” she reflects. Darlings, her first production venture is going straight to OTT and Alia is happy about that. “It is a film that I believe will do well on an OTT platform, it’s that kind of narrative and that kind of story. We have got this stellar cast comprising Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma, Roshan Mathew and me and I am quite excited to be part of this new journey,” she comments.” She’ll also be seen in Jee Le Zara in the august company of Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Katrina Kaif. She’s excited about the project and says it was

IF I PUT UP A PICTURE, WHATEVER PICTURE IT MAY BE, I AM DOING IT BECAUSE OF WHAT I’M FEELING AT THAT MOMENT, AND THAT’S IT, THERE’S NO OTHER EXPLANATION FOR IT Azad Maidan. It’s one of the biggest highlights of the film as it tells you about all the work that she did for the women because that got her recognition. It was very important to get that scene right. I could feel a tingling sensation in my body after some takes while doing the scene. I used to shake and shiver because

it was quite hard-hitting and intense and very truthful.” Her eyes sparkle as she recalls shooting those sequences. She’s used to living in constant media spotlight and Alia says she’s now become better at blocking it out. “I’ve turned 29 this year. I have become more private. I feel like there’s way more power and impact

shouldered in these past 10 years. The subject moves to social media. Unlike most celebrities, who are tight-lipped about their love life, she has been very open about her feelings for Ranbir Kapoor and that seems to have rubbed off on the media-shy Kapoor scion as well. “I am putting up a picture that I want to put up. I am not doing it because I feel ‘ki

Priyanka who set the ball rolling on getting them all together. “PC and I have been friends for quite a few years and so have PC and Kat and Kat and me. So, we just kind of all came together on this and said ‘yaa, let’s do this’ and let me tell you it was not easy. It took many, many zoom calls. Just imagine three of us getting our schedules together? It worked out really well in the end and we can’t wait to start.” July 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 25

Women have been known for their multi-tasking abilities and our leading ladies are no exception. They not only have been conquering the marquee with their acting skills but also chalking up identities in other fields as well. Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta have been part of IPL franchises. Madhuri Dixit runs a successful edtech business, Malaika Arora has a popular yoga studio. Even earlier, Hema Malini and Reena Roy were successful producers and so were pioneers like Shobana Samarth and Devika Rani. Our contemporary actresses have not just been venturing into film productions but have been funding startups as well. They’re investing in everything from clothing lines, beauty products, alternate energy to yoghurt. They’re not afraid to take risks and are empowering others by their example. Anushka Sharma made her debut alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008). She launched her production house called Clean Slate Filmz in 2013, which is now being managed solely by Karan Sharma as Anushka wants to primarily focus on her acting career. The actress was a handson producer and was involved in every aspect of the filmmaking process, be it casting, screenplay or music. She produced critically acclaimed films like the thriller NH10 (2015) that featured herself in the lead. Other films like Phillauri (2017) and Pari (2018), which were a ghost story and a horror film respectively, followed. Her tryst with horror continued with the production of Bulbbul (2020) for OTT. Paatal Lok (2020), an OTT series, which was part police procedural and part political satire, won her several plaudits, including the Best Series Award, at the Filmfare OTT Awards. In 2017, she also started her own clothing brand called Nush, which was aimed at providing comfortable yet chic options for women. She appeared in Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30 in 2018 and on Fortune India’s 50 Most Powerful Women in Business both in 2018 and 2019.

Branded as a natural actor, she proved to be a natural investor as well. She launched Ed-a-Mamma, a sustainable clothing brand, in November 2020. The clothing brand aimed at children became a 150 crore venture in the last quarter of 2021. She also invested in beauty e-tailer Nykaa, and saw her investment soar when the brand went public. She’d also invested in the startup Style Cracker in 2017, which is a personal styling platform. She’s been called the numero uno fashionista by the press and it was obvious that she’ll venture out in the clothes retail space. In 2017, Sonam and her sister Rhea launched the high-street fashion brand Rheson, known for its affordable prices and chic styling. Sonam recently invested in the blockchain-based game MechaFightClub (MFC). “I’ve grown up playing video games and love everything about them. The art, the storytelling, the creativity that goes into developing a game that is exciting today and also stands the test of time is something that’s always intrigued me,” she said on Twitter.

Katrina Kaif started her career with Kaizad Gustad’s Boom (2003), though the film didn’t create any waves for her. She bounced back with back-to-back hits like Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? JITESH PILLAAI INTERVIEWS SAMANTHA RUTH PRABHU, THE SOUTH SENSATION WHO’S ALL IN THE NEWS THESE DAYS

Samantha Ruth Prabhu has made the nation swoon through her sensuous moves in Oo antava song from Pushpa. Juxtaposed to that is her rock solid performance in The Family Man Season 2, where one saw her as a hardcore terrorist. She’s seemingly at ease in both worlds and that’s the mark of a brilliance in an actor. She’s had an amicable separation with husband Naga Chaitanya and hasn’t let the emotional turmoil deter her from pursuing excellence. She’s learnt to live life on her own terms and has made sure to put the past behind her, immersing herself in work and travel and charity. Excerpts from a heart-to-heart talk with the supremely talented diva…

Pushpa

Samantha, what were you thinking when you were approached for The Family Man 2? When The Family Man 2 came to me I had been looking for a challenging role for over two years. Female actors don’t get too many characters that allow them to explore different dimensions. They always get unidimensional characters, which can be pretty frustrating. So when this role was offered to me it was a chance to explore a new facet which was not familiar to me. The

actor in me couldn’t resist the challenge.

You have done the entire gamut in the South whether it’s Mahanati or Super Deluxe. What are the challenges you look for as an actor?

I always want to explore unfamiliar emotions. Otherwise you tend to get typecast with the same familiar characters, and your performances start getting boring and repetitive. You can’t really do much when you constantly get roles that explore the same emotional space

with the same cute bubbly persona. It’s important to break free from that and choose your roles. I know it’s definitely a risk when the audiences love you for something. But sometimes the risk pays off, like The Family Man did for me.

While being a popular actor and star you haven’t stuck to the song and dance routine. How do you manage an item song in Pushpa and a Family Man? An item song is also

extremely challenging. Things like getting the steps right, the right rhythm and being energetic throughout even if you are dead tired. On the other hand, playing Raji in The Family Man 2 had its own challenges. Her character seemed strong but she was vulnerable inside. I have seen life and know the kind of brutality women suffer. According to me her character was loosely based on real people. I could feel her anger, her pain and the injustices she and her people faced. So my emotions were true and honest. Honestly, it was very traumatic for me July 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 31

You said ‘vulnerable’, was it because you were playing the baddie and that the audience sympathy would not be with you?

I believe that in contemporary cinema the villains are hijacking the audience. The Joker from Batman is a good example. The baddies are real, not stupid and they don’t mouth some ridiculous dialogues. They are layered characters and could be any of us. Like we all go through similar feelings of rage and pain. Some people can control that pain and rage but some people can’t and they express it through different actions. It’s just that we don’t pick up a gun and shoot people but I think we must have thought of it several times. I cannot justify the path she took but I don’t think Raji was the bad guy.

You have been pretty vocal about body and fat shaming. You run an NGO of your own and also run an organisation. When did you decide that you will not just be a pretty face but also do things that will make a difference. I have gone through my

own struggles. I came from nothing and found it very difficult to believe that people would love me so much after my first film. I could not process that love. So I had a lot of insecurities and always felt that I was not good enough. My own personal struggle has been long and difficult. I felt I should speak about it and let the other girls know that we all go through our struggles. No one is spared. Some choose to speak about it and some don’t. But I like to share it and have always vocalised it. If that helps someone else to make their journey a little less difficult then I shall be extremely happy. I wish someone had helped me during my struggle.

Can you articulate those struggles? Many people struggle with body issues and self esteem, always wanting approval and validation. What would be your advice to them? People think that if you are successful, have superhit films and millions love you, you feel like a million bucks all the time. But it’s not true. I came from very humble beginnings and like I said I saw success immediately with my first film. It would be like

‘hey she has hit the jackpot. She must be feeling so happy’. But it wasn’t like that. I felt I didn’t deserve all this adulation. I didn’t look like any of the other girls and didn’t deserve all the big projects I was offered. But today I have stopped fighting that feeling. The feeling comes, I accept it, and it goes away. So I would tell girls it’s okay if they are having a bad day. They should vocalise it and understand it. As soon as they accept what they are going through, half the battle is won. It’s when they don’t want to accept it that the problem begins. And fighting it is a never ending battle. I thought with my

separation I would crumble and die. I never thought I could be this strong. I think most people are strong. It’s just that they don’t give themselves enough credit. Today I am very, very proud of how strong I am.

There was a backlash on social media and everybody had their own opinions on everything. How easy is it for an actor after a stressful day to read good and bad things. What would your advice be to your fans on social media?

Like I told you I like to share, so I have invited all my followers into my personal life. It’s a decision that I made. So when they get involved in my life they have a say in whatever I do.

I believe that in contemporary cinema the villains are hijacking the audience. The Joker from Batman is a good example I don’t feel that everyone on social media needs to love me and whatever I do and accept all my decisions and my choices. I believe that we live in a time where everyone should have their opinion and still be able to live amicably. So I don’t have any problem with social media. I do have a problem with YouTube and other channels who go to any length for that clickbait. And unfortunately for me they were using their platforms to fire over my shoulder everything that they disagreed with,

and felt about women who didn’t conform to their thinking. It got very dirty in that sense. I wouldn’t say that it was my social media that was the problem but people looking for those clickbaits.

What are you watching these days? Mayor of Kingstown was

the last great show that I watched.

What have been your all time favourite shows in the last few years? Definitely Downton Abbey, and I recently

Inside The Mossad

started rewatching it. I was so kicked when I went to meet the Downton Abbey director Philip John with whom I am working on my next project Arrangements Of Love. I was so nervous when I went to audition for the part because he had directed Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey! But it turned out to be such an amazing experience. Yes Downton Abbey is right up there and I love Bridgerton too. Then there was Modern Love.

You are playing a strong bisexual in Arrangements Of Love. Have you worked closely with the LGBT community?

I haven’t started work on the project but when we do, we definitely intend to. I would like to get all the smallest details right.

You went to some spiritual places where you did some spiritual cleansing. What was that journey like?

I’ve always wanted to go to the Himalayas ever since I read the Mahabharata. And my journey happened at the point when I really needed it. Everything was put together within a week. I found the right people to go with on this Char Dham. It was so beautiful and it feels like I just went yesterday. What you feel is so strong. I have been to the most beautiful places in the world but the mystique of the Himalayas, the vibration and the energy is so palpable. Each one of us should visit it at least once in our lifetime. n July 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 33

The Little

Big sensation JITESH PILLAAI HAS A CONVERSATION WITH MITHILA PALKAR, AN ACTRESS WHO HAS GROWN WITH EVERY OUTING

Good things come in small packages. Mithila Palkar started out doing skits on the internet and her natural ease stayed. She’s never out of element – be it in her OTT series Little Things, Marathi films or Hindi cinema – Her big chirpy smile, her twinkling eyes make her out to be a person high on life. She has retained the ability to look at everything with a waif like curiosity. She’s in love with her craft and can’t think of anything else besides acting. Her zest for life is infectious and you feel like smiling along with her as she yammers nineteen-to-the 1900 about everything from Gulzar to ’70s songs to Madhuri Dixit. Reproduced below are excerpts from a chat with a talented Ms Palkar...

You live with your grandparents who didn’t really approve of your acting career. How did you get them to come around? My grandfather knew I had it in me to do something in the performing arts space. But he wasn’t sure of this space. So his way of protecting me was by not letting me get into it. Also I didn’t have a mentor or a godfather or any reference to showbiz. I had to sit him down and tell him that even if it didn’t work out, I should at least be given a chance. He reluctantly agreed but was confused. He said he knew I was acting but asked me why wasn’t I on television or newspapers. That’s the time I had started working with Filter Copy and everything was on YouTube and I had to explain to him that he had to see me online. Then my ‘cup song’ went viral which a Marathi news channel covered. When I came home one day he said some family member of ours called him and said that I was in the news. That’s when he said ‘now you are famous’. We got him a smartphone and a tablet so he could google me. After that he started collecting my interviews and articles. He’s my biggest fan now.

to be done in the writing. What kept our chartacters Dhruv and Kavya exciting for the audience was they had all the uncomfortable conversations to figure out whether the relationship was working out or not. What has been the experience of working in big films and then doing series? I absolutely enjoy being in this space where I am not in one category and get to be everywhere. My grandfather once told me that you are becoming Jack of all trades and master of none, so better be focussed on one thing. But I think it’s good because I get to do everything unabashedly. Are you as quirky and mad as your characters? (Laughs) Yes! Absolutely.

How was it working with actors like Dulquer Salman, Irrfan Khan in Karwaan and then Kajol and Tanvi Azmi in Tribhanga? When I first met Kajol I didn’t know how to react, because she has been my idol when growing up and suddenly I was sharing screen space with her. But she made it so easy with her infectious laughter. It was the same with Irrfan sir. As for DQ (Dulquer), if you are unaware of who he is you won’t know How do you look back at Little that he’s a superstar Things now that you have because he is that done three seasons? humble. Five shows or films you have loved in the last couple of years? I enjoy watching shows in different languages. That’s very aspirational for me because I want to work in different languages. I recently did a Telugu film and after that I was like ‘hey I can try more languages.’ So which is why it’s Money Heist, Call My Agent (the original) Sex Education and Squid Game. Then I loved

If you were to list out five characters you wanted to play, which ones would they be? Fresh on my mind is Jodie Comer’s character Villanelle in Killing Eve. I’ve been saying this again and again that I would like to play an assassin like her because the character is so outside of me. Actually I am going to manifest this, and not list any other character right now

I absolutely enjoy being in this space where I am not in one category and get to be everywhere.

BOLLYWOOD HEARTTHROBS ADITYA ROY KAPUR, SANJANA SANGHI AND DEBUTANT DIRECTOR KAPIL VERMA IN CONVERSATION WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE ABOUT THEIR NEW ACTION-ENTERTAINER – RASHTRA KAVACH OM AND GIVING BOLLYWOOD THE NEW POSTER BOY OF ACTION!

G

oing back to the theatres post-pandemic, the film Rashtra Kavach Om couldn’t have released at a better time. An outand-out action entertainer with an emotional story at heart, it’s the perfect theatrical watch and a big screen actioner. The film starring Aditya Roy Kapur sees him and co-star Sanjana Sanghi in never seen before action avatars. They along with their director Kapil Verma are in Dubai ahead of the film’s release and pretty excited about it when I catch up with them on a lovely afternoon. “Yes we are extremely excited about the movie release! It’s something we have been working on throughout the pandemic. So we are thrilled that its finally going to release and will be out for everyone to see. We can’t wait!” they say excitedly. The film also boasts of several firsts – and most of all, it marks a stark difference in the kind of roles we have been used to seeing Aditya in. Unlike the romantic, intense, roles he has essayed on screen, this hardcore actionentertainer sees the young star in a full-fledged adrenalin-pumping action avatar playing the titular role of a paracommando, Om! It’s been a long wait, agrees Aditya and says, “Yes, it’s a genre I’ve been dying to do for the longest. I got a taste of it in Malang and after that I was seeking out something substantial in the genre, so I am waiting to see just what people think and how it’s received because it feels like a new start, something new for me.” He adds, “I too wish I had explored the genre earlier, but things happen when they are supposed to. I am just glad it did, better late than never!” The experience was equally new for Sanjana who is also being seen in a gun-trotting avatar. “It’s been 36 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2022

an incredibly eye-opening experience for me,” says the actress who had earlier won hearts with her role in Dil Bechara. Point out the difference in the characters and she says, “I hadn’t imagined that I would get to do a film like this so early in which I got to push myself as an actor in a genre to explore myself. As an actor this is the constant strife, a constant endeavor trying to find challenges that really try to bring out multiple facets of you. And what makes it all the more engaging is that the film has more heart and not just the brawn.” The trailer looks promising and the director is elated with the response it has been garnering. So any plans of turning into a franchise? Kapil says that they would hope so, “We tried to stop ourselves from getting too ahead of ourselves, but yes, that would be something we all would love to do. It is a thought we have allowed ourselves to identify and believe that we would have a franchisee someday, so nothing on cards as of now, but we hope we can,” says

Kapil. Aditya admits to being quite the action buff himself. Talking about his action heroes he says, “Arnold Schwarzenegger was the one for me, then ofcourse Sylvester Stallone. Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Van Damme… they were the ones, I’ve seen all their films, so back then I was pretty crazy about watching them.” Getting into the shoes of an action hero himself, Bollywood is getting a new poster boy for the genre! “I really hope so,” says Aditya, whose physical transformation has been grabbing much attention and eyeballs in equal measure! “It was a few months, four months atleast,” reveals Aditya. Talking about prepping for the role and action, he adds, “I had to do action training as it was something new so I had to train for it, to kind of feel confident on set and also to kind of feel and achieve the kind of vision that Kapil had. This is his first action film, but he has been shooting action his whole life and I knew that he is going to in his first

film show everyone what he’s got, so I had to be like be into the best shape to be able to do those things convincingly and also be a regular to the gym which is something that was necessary to look beefed up, so it was pretty intense.” The film showcases him differently from the previous image of being more like a thinking woman’s actor and its definitely spiking up the number of female fans for Aditya and new tags too. “I can live with it (laughs). I won’t complain!” The change in screen image is no different for Sanjana who people came to associate with romantic roles, while the film has her giving us the Tomb Raider vibes. “I would like to believe that we have kept my character really simple in this too. Being honest I used to take not more than 20 minutes even on the make-up chair. In terms of styling her and her hair it’s all very raw and I love that because she is a real character, not made her larger than life,” she says. As for her favourite action heroes, Aditya definitely makes the cut, they say. “No doubt that he’s going to be the new action hero because we saw the sequences being shot with him! Sometimes it fees unreal, really feel that the way Kapil has shot the film is very unique for Hindi cinema because we have gone hand in hand and the screenplay is very crisp so we will so hopefully pray that it will lend to the audience enjoying it.” Coming out of the pandemic and being treated to an interesting share of content driven cinema this one has a mix of both content and action. “Yes the film calls out to be seen in a theatre, that it will do justice being a big screen entertainer was definitely the idea.” As for the challenging part of the movie, Aditya and Sanjana both agree that the challenge lay in the emotional as much as the action part! “There is no doubt that physically it was quite a challenge, but it was equally if not more challenging when it came to emotional story as well.

It was quite an experience for all us to sink our teeth into. But it was a lovely experience… Because when something is well-written, you don’t have to try too hard, but it wasn’t like just the physical stuff. The story was something we could just dial in. It needed us to be invested in completely,” they say. So what’s the way to win the hearts of the two stars we ask? “I don’t know,” laughs Aditya, “Food is one of the them. I don’t know if there is one way, I think there are many ways. But yes, I would say, just be who you are, just be yourself and don’t try too hard, I guess.” Sanjana seconds it, “It’s the same for me too. Keep it real!” And what is it that Kapil sees in his actors? “Just be themselves, dedicated and carry their best to work.” So what is Aditya really like when not facing the camera. “Real! It depends I guess, I like to keep my private life private, but I like to do normal common things. I like to travel, spend time with my family, my friends… I am kind of disciplined too, but everything is well balanced. Today, I don’t party so much as much as I used to earlier, but I can’t remember the last time I went clubbing, so yes I have found a balance, a kind of consistency in trying to be as healthy as I can be, everything in moderation including moderation!” Sanjana is no different, “I am similar in some aspects. But I spend a lot of time reading! I have been a nerd my whole my life, and I still do I as love reading. I enjoy playing with my dog. I am not from Mumbai and I am still making it home,” she says. The trio also share a love for Dubai. “It feels like home here,” they say, “We hope the audience here too enjoy the film as much. We are really excited about it. We are here for shorter duration this time, but we hope to return soon for a longer vacay,” they add. July 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 37

Meet the

INTERVIEW

name

behind

Gulf Buzz!

HIS MEDIA COMPANY HAS BEEN CREATING ALL THE RIGHT BUZZ ONLINE SINCE IT WAS FIRST CONCEPTUALISED. AND WHAT STARTED AS A FUN PROJECT DURING THE PANDEMIC, WITHIN A YEAR EMERGED AS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND CLUTTERBREAKING ONLINE MEDIA PLATFORMS. BUT FOR 28-YEAR-OLD, DHRUV MANIAR, THE NAME BEHIND GULF BUZZ, THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING. INSPITE OF HOLDING A MASTERS DEGREE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS, THIS DUBAI-KID BELIEVED IN FOLLOWING HIS PASSION RATHER THAN CHASING SUCCESS IN A CORPORATE WORLD. AND IT’S A RULE HE STILL SWEARS BY, FINDS AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE IN A CANDID CHAT WITH DUBAI’S MEDIA WHIZKID!

A friendly smile and ready to shoot at sight, two traits that best describe Dhruv Maniar, the name and face behind Gulf Buzz, one of the most popular online media platforms. I recently caught up with the young Dubai kid, to know more about his journey. With no background in journalism, the founder-owner believes that it was his passion for creating content and being consistent that has seen him write his own success story!

Dhruv Maniar Gulf Buzz is your brainchild! So how did it come about?

Yes, Gulf Buzz is my baby! In 2019, I left my job with another media company and it was around the same time that the pandemic came in and there was nothing to do. So I started making and posting funny videos on Gulf Buzz. So the name was already something I had decided on, but at the time it was just for fun, nothing commercial and nothing what it is today. So it started in the late 2020s, but it is from March 2021 that I decided to leave aside all side hustles and just concentrate on Gulf Buzz and see where it goes. Skip to 2022, it’s my company!

But you did not have any background in journalism?

That’s right. I came in with no background in journalism. I completed my Bachelors in Business with specialization in finance and auditing and I have done my Masters in International

Business. So I had zero knowledge about journalism or digital media, in that sense. I did try my hand in the corporate world in business development, but soon naturally gravitated towards the media industry. So, after some trial and error, including blogging for an e-commerce site, I started working for a media agency that I helped built over a year-and-a-half as their first employee and then I left. That was right before pandemic and that’s when Gulf Buzz came about in 2020. But like I said, it was only in March 2021 that I thought of giving it a serious turn and decided to give myself a year to see how it goes.

Had you imagined back then what a success it would become?

To be honest, NO! I had no idea that this one year would change my life. But also the fact is, that I had a lot of people who believed in me. They were like if I could successfully

help set up a media company for another brand in one year and a half, then I could definitely do it with mine. And that’s where the whole motivation and inspiration came in, because people believed in me and what I had to offer. It wasn’t easy, of course because there I had a team and here I was on my own. But there was that faith and belief and I started it and now we are a company with an amazing set of people working for me.

What were the major challenges along the way?

The biggest challenge was that you were just looked upon as a blogger. When I started, I knew I didn’t want to be a blogger. I wanted to be a media platform so the barrier to cross between the blogger and over to the side of being a media company was the biggest hurdle to cross. But I knew I would be able to cross over and I am glad it happened sooner than expected and most organically too. And then being on

the other side, there was so much competition around, and so many were already doing it. But then one of the biggest challenges was that there were people who also started copying my style of content and there was no way to curb that except be ahead of the curve.

What has been the USP of Gulf Buzz? Relatable, short and crisp content I would say, something that is important to be shared and something that people relate to, so that has been the USP so far and I hope it remains the same.

Where do you get the inspiration for your content from?

Inspiration comes from people on the street, people who you talk to, just keeping eyes and ears open and knowing what people are talking about, what’s the buzz around, so yes, that’s the inspiration. Also there are some other pages you do get that inspiration from, but you have to give it your own spin or take. I find something amazing that the bloggers have out and that pushes you to do more too.

But essentially, it’s the people and their stories.

Food is your forte, but are you looking at expanding?

Yes, I am looking at expanding for sure. I am looking at a lot more verticals on the platform including travel, but I need to do it in a more planned manner. I will look at it more step wise. I also want to include more countries, so that is definitely on cards.

Any advice for social media aspirants?

The first one: They say, Rome was not built in a day and it’s so true. It will take time, but be consistent and you will get the results too. Also don’t run after money or success. If that’s what you have your sights on, then the journey will be lost. Keep the focus on the path ahead. When I started the page, it was not with the intention of making money but in doing the best I can. Just focus on good content. That will take you everywhere. Success and money will both follow. Be passionate. Don’t worry about monetizing content. Just get the good content out, rest will happen!

F

rom reigning the marquee as the quintessential Bollywood hero to now reinventing himself on the OTT, Bobby Deol is simply unstoppable! While still enjoying the commercial successes at the box office, the Deol has also been garnering much acclaim for his versatile roles in web-series like Aashram and OTT films Class of ’83 and

Love Hostel. The freedom of getting to play characters of different shades and getting to be adventurous as an actor on the digital platforms is both exhilarating and liberating, the

star tells me as I catch up with him for a candid chat. Excerpts from our exclusive interview

-Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

THE QUINTESSENTIAL BOLLYWOOD HERO AND NOW A LEADING OTT STAR… IT’S A NEW TAG FOR YOU BOBBY! I’ve just been very lucky, in the sense that I’ve been working very hard towards doing different kinds of characters and the OTT platform has finally given me that opportunity. Like my character in the Class of ’83 was a completely different character from Aashram and then again, what I did in Love Hostel was completely different. So it makes me very happy that I’ve been able to play such different characters and that people have appreciated all of them. So really happy and excited about what’s happening with me in my life right now. YOUR THIRD SEASON OF AASHRAM RELEASED RECENTLY. HAD YOU EXPECTED THIS PHENOMENAL RESPONSE TO THE WEB-SERIES AND YOUR CHARACTER BABA NIRALA? Well, I had never expected that such a negative character will get such a positive reaction (laughs). Even for Love Hostel, I got so much appreciation, it sometimes feels like I’m dreaming. My work has started speaking for me. I still remember when I met Prakash ji (filmmaker Prakash Jha) in his office for Aashram! I had always wanted to work with him but I never really got a chance, and now I was doing this role in his series. It was not anything that people would expect me to play, but it was just the best thing that happened to me! WHAT YOU DID WITH AASHRAM WAS REALLY UNPREDICTABLE? Yes, that was the beginning of me shocking people (laughs). YOUR BOBBY DEOL VERSION 2.0 HAS CLEARLY HIT HOME! I’m so glad that times have changed. Earlier it was much difficult for actors to break their image and you were always wary about whether people will accept you in different characters or different shades of characters. But OTT has given me that opportunity to be adventurous, because that’s what I had always wanted to do. I wanted to break out of my image and I’m glad people now look forward to seeing their actors play different kinds and all sorts of characters. They don’t want to see them playing the typical hero. There is a hero in the villain, there’s a hero in every kind of character and there is something interesting

in every character that you enjoy, and that we enjoy. The idea is to do stuff that people watch and the character stays with them, that’s what I’ve been trying to do and I have been lucky with that, so fingers crossed, I hope I keep doing it. SO WHAT IS THE DRAW FOR YOU TODAY? As I said, I’m glad to do characters that have substance, depth and that are challenging for me to portray. That’s what I found when I signed the Class of ’83, and Aashram and I’m glad and lucky to have these characters. HOW DO YOU REACT TO ALL YOUR MEMES AND THE NETIZENS REFERRING TO YOU AS LORD BOBBY? It’s all their love for me, and them giving me all these titles are nice to hear. They’re fun (laughs). I’m glad that people have given me this opportunity to do things the way I want to and have been accepting me in those roles. So it’s nice when people make memes because it’s the new generations and it’s their language of communicating and I’m glad that the new generations are noticing what I was trying to do. I hadn’t worked for a few years, so the young generation hadn’t see much of Bobby Deol, but now they are noticing me, my work and I’m very glad to be relevant to the current generations too. YOU HAVE A FOLLOWING ACROSS ALL AGES… Yes... My family has always been loved and my fans have always stood by. Even when I wasn’t working, I used to go out and my fans would be there, telling me that they are looking forward to seeing me on the big screen. And I would say yes I’m trying to do something. But how could I tell them that I wasn’t getting good work, that I was getting mediocre work, which I didn’t want to do and I wasn’t happy with those films coming my way. But they stood by me and its thanks to their love, affection and support that gave me the strength to keep working hard and I’ll always be grateful to my fans… old and the new! YOU STILL HAVE YOUR COMMERCIAL SUCCESSES WITH FILMS, BUT YOU SEEM TO BE EXPLORING A COMPLETELY NEW FACET TO YOUR PERSONALITY ON THE OTT… Yes, I have been in this industry for 26 years almost, and I kind of got tired with the commercial cinema and the kind of roles I was being offered. I wanted to play characters that had some substance, had some depth, that would challenge me and on OTT I got the kind of characters where I could challenge myself and bring out the best in me. I surprised myself by playing these characters, and this is what every actor wants to do. To get noticed, it’s about having talent and being appreciated for that. In the long run, if you are appreciated for your talent more than your stardom, then you have a longer career in this industry. ARE YOU SAYING IT BECAUSE YOU ALREADY CAME IN AS A STAR? Yes, that’s how my career started, but I

I HA DN’ T WOR KED FOR A FEW YEA R S, SO THE YOUN G GE N E RATION HA DN’ T SEE M UCH OF B OB BY DEOL, B UT NOW THEY ARE N OTIC IN G M E, M Y WORK A ND I’ M VERY GLA D TO B E RELEVA NT TO THE C URRE N T GENER ATIONS TOO.

never realized that I was a star. Back then, I was just happy that my career was doing well, though I never let it get to me. I have seen my father reach the top, reaching heights that no one has till date, and then going through a bad time and then going back up again. So I know that stardom never lasts. I was trying very hard to do something different back then too, but in those days ek baar image ban jaati hai, toh you couldn’t break out of it. Today, things have changed, the crowds that watch the OTT are a much younger generation, they are more open to seeing different kinds of content, different genres being made, and that’s truly helped me to, showcase myself as an actor than a star. That’s the best thing that’s happened. SO WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS DIFFERENT IN THE BOBBY DEOL OF THE 90S AND THE BOBBY DEOL OF TODAY? It’s like when you’re growing up, in your teen years you don’t think you look nice, but as you grow older, you start looking better, you start understanding life around, you understand yourself better too. So it’s the same for actors… you start your career, you are learning and growing with each experience, seeing things and doing things you haven’t done before. So, you grow as an actor, then you make mistakes, learn from them! If you don’t learn from your mistakes, you will never move forward, I think that’s also how my journey has been in the industry, I was young in the 90s, not as mature, as I am today.

IF YOU COULD GIVE ONE ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would tell the younger me to just be focused. Don’t take things for granted and don’t be so naïve! DO YOU FEEL THAT THE CURRENT GENERATION IS MORE FOCUSED IN COMPARISON? Yes, definitely! They come in so wellprepared, so clear about what their future plans are. It’s amazing to see this generation. They know exactly what they want and are unafraid to go for it. SO WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS? I have done Penthouse with Abbas Bhai Mustan Bhai. So this is in the commercial zone, it’s a thriller and you’ll see me in the Humraaz zone in it. Then I’m doing Animal which is being directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga in which I will be working with Ranbir Kapoor for the first time. Then I’m doing Apne 2. WHAT ABOUT SEQUELS TO YOUR BLOCKBUSTERS… ANY PLANS FOR THAT? I think a sequel could have been made much earlier… Like Soldier, the younger generation only knows it in memes. So yes I do hope they had made it earlier, but I don’t mind doing a Soldier or a Bichhoo or a Badal all these kind of films. Like Gupt was way ahead of its time, but it can’t be remade because the charm was that the people didn’t know the suspense (laughs). July 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 41

INTERVIEW

Serving

Sacred flavours

Vikas Khanna style!

Chef Vikas Khanna

AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE INTERVIEWS THE GLOBALLY-RENOWNED MICHELIN STAR CHEF VIKAS KHANNA, AS HE TALKS ABOUT HIS PASSION FOR NOT JUST FOOD, BUT INDIAN CULTURE TOO AND ALSO ABOUT LAUNCHING HIS 38TH BOOK THAT CELEBRATES BOTH!

R

enowned Michelin Star awarded Chef Vikas Khanna has not just put the Indian Cuisine on the global culinary map, but has cemented its stronghold position along with the rich Indian heritage and culture. Now with his 38th book he takes this passion even further. A one-of-a-kind limited-edition luxury and a rare collectible asset, Vikas Khanna’s ‘Sacred Foods of India’ is a tribute to the culture and heritage of India. This magnum opus brings together recipes of prasad, and foods served at various holy places around the country! But what also makes it all the more special and unique is that it’s the first Indian book to be launched as an NFT (Non-Fungible Token), and interestingly, the first ‘Phygital’ (physical and digital) unit of the epic created by Akshaya.io has already been sold at a staggering $50000. The New York based celebrity chef, writer and host is in Dubai to launch the book when I catch up with him at his restaurant Kinara! Casually dressed, a warm smile, and with looks that belie his age, we settle in for a candid chat. Excerpts from our exclusive tete-a-tete

The physical and NFT version of your limited-edition magnum opus ‘Sacred Foods of India’ is being unveiled in Dubai. So, another feather in the cap for you?

gives you these moments. The book was a dream-project, we started collecting recipes in 2014 and then eight years ago the first draft went to publishing. The idea was to have this magnum opus This is the cap! that people will have as a collector’s item to show Tell us more… their generations ahead. This It’s my 38th book and in my heart it’s the same fear as it was book is very special, it’s an for my first, there’s anxiety, but extension of my docu-series, also happiness that the universe called ‘Holy Kitchens’ where

I talked about food and faith and that how India is the only country in the world with institutions like the langar and the akshaya patra, and with so much celebration of foods, which is cooked not just for physical sustenance but to bring the community together. So for me that’s an important part of cooking, that’s an important part of why I am in this position.

I wanted to highlight and celebrate it and that’s what the book does.

Your earlier book holds a place in some of the highest offices across the world including the Vatican, will this follow suit? Yes, Utsav is at the Buckingham Palace, at the White House and the Pope’s library too. It was given to all

the world leaders! But to be honest, I don’t think about it. I have never done a series of anything, I feel that a project should be self-sustained with a selfidentity.

You have been so vocal about bringing to the fore Indian culture, besides the cuisine.

I firmly believe that the dish you are eating today, it doesn’t belong to you, as my mom tells me that the dish you are making and serving today and making those dollars, it actually doesn’t belong to you. She told me that you are selling something which belongs to the whole heritage, that the dish exists because it has been cooked for generations, it got modified, it got changed and it got adapted, but still the roots belong to a certain generation, and there’s a reason we are enjoying it from childhood and carrying forward to the next generations too. So I feel that any project for me has to represent that thread, you can pick up any of my works, and you will see that it represents the very thread that brings the ancient culture to the modern world.

Do you look at it as a responsibility then?

I understand my background - running a small banquet in Punjab to now being in this kind of space! I feel there’s a reason in there and I have an obligation to this culture back home and I exist due to this continuity. Continuity is what creates culture and I look at my friends who like me have moved to the West, there’s a little difficulty when it comes to their kids understanding Indian culture. So it becomes our responsibility, our duty to celebrate the culture and to bring it to them and telling the children the heritage they belong to. So you can see even in the book, I have said, ‘heritage’ first, then its ‘pilgrimage’ and then it’s the holy kitchen. For a lot of people, India is a pilgrimage, they don’t

look at it like just another nation, this country evokes, inspires you to be something more and this book is a channel to present that.

What’s the biggest challenge in coming up with a book like this?

There’s a disclaimer in the book that says that these recipes cannot be recreated! Let’s be honest. The khada prasad I have in the Golden Temple… there is no chef on the planet who can replicate the taste, there’s no scientist who can recreate it, because the food is cooked with a certain emotion, and the prayers everything just add to the energy of the food. It’s between the people and the Gods, how can we replicate something so sacred. So I always say that it’s very difficult, but we also have to understand that there are people who will not have access to these places. But we need to celebrate them and the only way we could do it is to be inspired by the dish and to measure it by the recipe that we people can cook at home and still enjoy. The fact is that the prasad we prepare cannot be compared to the ones being prepared at these holy places. So the most challenging part has been creating those recipes.

From Amritsar to New York, how do you look back at the journey?

My sister always tells me, do more! She has seen me cooking in people’s homes and cleaning floors, sleeping in the parking and doing everything to survive… So today when there are some days you are just frustrated with so much on your plate and so much coming, because you get a voice for that limited time and you have to do more, she still tells me that you have to do more! And when you get that chance to voice and speak up, you should be able to tell the story of your heritage. Because

it’s no more just about you, your name, your home town or your last name, now it’s much bigger than that. You are talking about one third of the planet. And cooking is easier in comparison to making people believe in that heritage. A few days ago, I was on BBC and they were asking about how I must’ve learnt about hunger back home in Amritsar as you come from a poor family. But the fact is that I never knew hunger in Amritsar because, in India there’s something about the DNA that somebody will feed you. Whereas, it was in New York that I learnt about hunger where nobody sees you, the poor are invisible. So, if somebody keeps pasting my roots on my face. With my roots also comes this beautiful heritage.

How has the food scene changed over the years?

I think the one big shift that has happened today is that there are more Indian chefs who’ve received the Michelin. Earlier the food scene was dominated by the French, so in 2011 in America when I became one of the first person of colour to win the star it was a big shift. They were like you can’t sell

Indian foods for more than a few dollars and I was like hold on. I sold a meal for $38,000 for one person. Because I was like okay, throw stones, but I will use all these stones to make a castle. And I’m not going to stop. Darna nahin bas! Always remember that it is after the volcano that the soil is most fertile. So even when people wrote nasty things about Indian cooking, say 10 or 15 years ago, some still do, but now we see the glorification, where we are invited to present our cuisines to the highest points in the world and the regional cooking is being appreciated.

Tell us about your connection with Dubai?

Dubai has become the centre of modern world. I had Junoon here 10 years ago, but we were struggling for ingredients then. Today they have the finest ingredients, more than even France and Tokyo. This platform between the East and the West is every chef’s dream. I love the energy of the city and its resilience. I love how they dealt with the pandemic. For every western city, they were a lesson in how well they dealt and took care of the people. The trade is a showcase market. July 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 43

JAFFER BHAI’S Taking the legacy forward!

This iconic restaurant is an absolute must-try for Mughlai cuisine lovers, finds Aakanksha Naval-Shetye

O

ne of UAE’s most-loved dining spots for Mughlai and Indian cuisine, no round-up about Dubai’s vibrant culinary landscape can be complete without a mention of Jaffer Bhai’s. Named after the late Jaffer Bhai Mansuri – popularly dubbed the ‘King of Bombay Biryani’ for his gently spiced, aromatic biryani cooked in ‘dum’ for over three hours – Jaffer Bhai’s has remained the go-to place for a platter of Bombay-style biryani since it first opened. Now carrying forward the culinary legacy is Jaffer Bhai’s son, Moin under whom the restaurant today has evolved as one of the region’s most-loved dining spots for specialised Mughlai as well as fusion IndoChinese cuisine. Besides their biryanis, kebabs and signature curries like Dabba Gosht, their kitchen also dishes out classic 44 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST July 2022

Chinese delicacies like Prawns dynamite and Fish Hong Kong with a unique twist. “It’s a great honour for a legacy brand like ours and it reaffirms the love our patrons and our loyal customers have shown us over the decades and their faith in the biryani we make, an art that I learned from my father and a family secret that can never be copied,” says Moin Jaffer Mansuri, chef, restaurateur and the second-generation owner of Jaffer Bhai’s restaurant that first opened shop in Mumbai in 1973 before reaching Dubai’s shores in the eighties. Today Jaffer Bhai’s operates out of its flagship restaurant in Karama and a second outlet in Al Barsha, specialising in biryanis and Indo-Chinese fusion dishes.

Food We visited the restaurant early evening, and even on a weekday it was a packed house! But then it’s understandable, considering the place is one of the most-popular and loved culinary hotspots of the city that enjoys a loyal following. Apart from the regular dishes available on all days, they also have fixed menus according to the day of the week. We started off with their Dum Ki Chops, Sikandari Seekh Kebabs, Mutton cutlets and Galauti Kebabs. For the main course, we tried their Mutton Khichda, White Chicken, Dabba Ghosht and the Mutton Biryani. Along with the basket of breads, and the accompaniments, it was one satiating experience. We also tried some of the well-known Chinese appetizers and all were packed with yummiest of the flavours. These we topped with a round of desi desserts including phirni. Made with the choicest and the freshest of ingredients, all the dishes were perfectly spiced and cooked to perfection. The meats were tender and the galauti kebab just melted in the mouth. The serving is generous and it’s easy to get carried away with the huge variety on the menu. The biryanis were as expected the hero dish, but every dish was as mouthwatering as the other. With the most authentic flavours, the dishes were well presented and added to the experience. The dishes are moderately spiced and suit all tastes. The platters are highly recommended.

INTERVIEW

Faridah Ajmal

Smells like a

Success Story!

PERFUMER FARIDAH AJMAL, WHOSE HOMEGROWN BRAND FARIDAH HAS BEEN HITTING ALL THE RIGHT NOTES WITH PERFUME CONNOISSEURS, TALKS TO AAKANKSHA NAVALSHETYE ABOUT PURSUING HER PASSION FOR PERFUMES, CREATING SIGNATURE SCENTS AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND TAKING HER PASSION FORWARD Congratulations on the launch of your new brand. Please tell us more about it!

Faridah is a homegrown brand – to be honest, it was in the works for a while. I initially started experimenting in a spare room at home that I converted to an office a couple of years ago. At the time all I really wanted was to nurture my passion for perfumes; which eventually turned into my brand tagline (nurturing passion). What started out as a simple project of creating signature scents for my daughters then turned into something far greater than I had actually envisioned; but once I started, I was hooked!

From there on, I was constantly experimenting, testing, creating and sharing my products with friends and family who not only loved my perfumes, but also encouraged me to take it to the next level. Each fragrance is delicately designed to a special theme, all coming together to pay tribute to the essence of my very own name – to be unique.

What is the USP of the brand and what sets it apart from the others in the market? Faridah’s USP lies in the personality of the

fragrance. Each fragrance has a personality of its own – fiery, warm, earthy, reflective, a bit of mischief, and dare I say, eccentric too! The fact is, I’ve had so much fun creating each fragrance and there is a story behind the scenes for each one that is no less than a masala film! The people I worked with can tell you a lot more about the drama but those are stories for another time! Suffice to say, when you try on any of the perfumes, you will get a sense of depth and mood. And like I myself do sometimes, you may want to try on several scents at

a time to get your own unique blend of the magic.

As a market leader, what is your vision behind this brand in terms of targeting the consumer markets?

Ours is a unique product line. The fragrances are a niche, limited-edition collection for an individual who is keen to experiment and understands the nuances of the notes. The goal is to create a personal experience that comes from the best for only the best - for a lasting impression and equally lasting memory.

Tell us about your connection with Dubai and how has it

influenced your perfumes?

Dubai has been home to me and my family for over thirty years; so even though I was born and raised in India, I feel I belong here. You will also realise my deep connection with this land through my creations, which have distinct Arabian notes, and yet is international in every way; just like the experience of living in Dubai!

From your passion for perfumes to actually launching your own brand, tell us about your journey?

Anyone associated with me will know that my venturing into creating perfumes was inevitable, albeit later than they expected. I did keep my ambitions on hold for a while as I have always been and continue to be deeply involved in my children’s lives and I have enjoyed being able to support my husband in his various initiatives and commitments. As a family, we have also been deeply involved in community welfare; we support several charitable initiatives here and in India. For us charity was more than cash handouts, we actually work on the ground to support community upliftment, especially differently abled children and senior citizens. This, among other things, kept me busy. One usually doesn’t know their own abilities and, in my case, too, my husband and girls were the ones who encouraged me to take that first step when they saw the quality of what I had created just as a hobby. To be encouraged to start my own line of fragrances by none other than my husband, who is a connoisseur and perfumer par excellence, not to mention that he has been in the business for several decades, meant a great deal to me. Having said that, I was adamant about one thing - Faridah had to be about Faridah.

You have been involved in almost every aspect of your business! Yes, it would have been the easiest thing in the world to make this a vanity project and have the groundwork done by employees. Instead,

I chose to start from scratch, from working out of my little makeshift office, trying out different formulae and writing them down in my diary (I am old fashioned and still love putting pen to paper) to trekking around town looking for office space, to registering my brand and designing my bottles and boxes, to the colour and logo of my brand, I was involved in everything. So, in terms of complying with local laws and governance, to the creative aspect, I have done it all. I am blessed with excellent support in getting it all together, but I have also learnt a great deal about how to build a business in the UAE. It has been a journey of great satisfaction.

Taking forward your family legacy, is it challenging to live up to the name and expectations?

More than challenging, it should enhance the legacy! My husband, Mohammed Fakhruddin Ajmal, has been a visionary in the perfume business in the region; having worked with his father in establishing Ajmal as a brand in the Arabian Gulf way back in 1974 and turning it into the brand it is today. His journey has certainly inspired me, and I have learned many things from him, his dedication and passion, his firm commitment to our clients and community. All this and more are definitely the Faridah brand promise, and yet the fragrances, the look and feel, are distinctly unique in itself. The brand Faridah will therefore be different, and yet I am hoping will enhance the family legacy.

Ours is a unique product line. The fragrances are a niche, limited-edition collection for an individual who is keen to experiment and understands the nuances of the notes. Just like anyone else, some days are easier than others. At different times there will be different priorities and things that need more attention over others. I am an early riser and get a lot of work done in the morning. Family time is important to us, and we make the time to do things together. The most important thing is to understand when priorities need a bit of a juggle; and for women I think its inbuilt – we do it extremely well!

What have been the biggest changes in the perfume industry that you have seen over the years?

Just like fashion and music, in recent times we are being re-introduced to traditional scents. People are now looking back at history and culturally What are your rules for significant fragrances, which are success? Go back to the basics – have being incorporated into various a goal, start small, work hard, mediums in beauty and art. perfumes include Musk Rose by Makkaj, Champagne by YSL, and Decadence by Marc Jacobs.

Any advice to budding entrepreneurs, especially women?

Don’t be afraid of challenging the norm; but also, be a keen listener. Stay engaged and in tune with what is happening around you. You need to have your finger on the pulse of your audience if you want to attract and retain your clients.

What is the vision for the brand going ahead?

We will soon be opening a boutique store. The launch will be followed by expanding into the digital space. It’s all very exciting, and right now, my focus is simply on getting people to experience what I have created. The Elements Range of Fire, Water, Earth and Air is a labour of love, and I am just delighted to be able to share this with you. I hope people will enjoy my fragrances as much as I have enjoyed creating them.

Tanisha Bhattacharya chats with model-turned-actor Namrata Sheth, who has found praise for her work in Guilty Minds

T

he newest OTT star on the block, Namrata Sheth, has won plaudits for her work in Guilty Minds and says it’s been the perfect launch for her. She’s happy that the masses have liked the series and is grateful for the love that has been coming her way. Modelling has often been the first step on the ladder of success for many actors and Namrata followed a similar trajectory. She started modelling at the age of 16, appearing in a commercial for a face wash brand at that tender age. She says she realised she loved performing ever since she first faced the camera. “I ended up getting a lot of assignments after that and slowly, I realised that this was a route I wanted to take,” she elaborates. She’s been modelling for a decade

now and says keeping herself motivated has been the biggest life lesson she’s imbibed thus far. “I had to struggle initially with rejection but then I learnt to take criticism in my stride and use it as a tool to better myself. And I also learnt how to keep my spirits up and bounce back from disappointments.”

S

he’d been auditioning for shows for sometime and finally, luck smiled on her when she got selected for Guilty Minds. It’s a courtroom

drama and Namrata reveals she visited the High Court several times to understand how lawyers slug it out in the court. She was reportedly taken on just 12 days before the shooting started and trusted the instincts of her director to guide her through the role. She plays a lawyer who has studied abroad and wants to make a career in India. Everything is both alien and exciting for her character. “Shefali Bhushan, my director, met me a day after the audition and told me all about

Shubhangi. She gave me the script to read and I found it interesting. It got me excited about my character and the series as well. I could relate to Shubhangi because like me she was young and bouncy. She was just starting out and full of energy about everything. I instantly connected with her.” Shriya Pilgaonkar and Varun Mitra were her co-stars in the series and she had a gala time working with them. Some of her scenes with Shriya were shot on outdoor schedules and the two girls bonded well while travelling. “I was just so in awe of her because

I had seen her in so many things. I think she set such a great example for how women-supportingwomen relationships should be like. She instantly makes you feel comfortable, is so motivating and she’s such a beautiful person,” gushes Namrata. She has known Varun for years. They’d been friends since their salad days and used to prepare for auditions together. So it was great for her to have her bestie as a co-star, as she knew she could depend on him to give her a helping hand if she goofed up. “He is such a great performer it is almost effortless to do scenes with him because he is always in character. I learned a lot by watching both of them perform. It was the best acting class that you could ask for,” she asserts. She’s been part of Eternally Confused And Eager For Love as well. She was shooting for Guilty Minds when she auditioned for it and got selected. She was able to shoot for it as Guilty Minds got held up because of covid. She was excited about the project as it was produced by Zoya Akhtar under her Tiger Baby banner. “I just love Zoya Akhtar as a storyteller. I was hoping that this one would work out and it did. I was just really thrilled to be a part of it. It was a very sweet, quirky, and I did it for my love for Zoya.” Like every other millennial, Namrata too likes to binge watch shows. She loves shows like Mirzapur, Sacred Games, Gullak and WeCrashed. She doesn’t want to stick to one genre when it comes to future projects. She’s quite gung ho on doing an action-oriented project as of now. “I am trained in kickboxing and I love doing adventurous things and so I would love to do something like that. But I also really enjoy watching real emotions and drama and think that they are just taken out of life. For example, the kind of things that Zoya Akhtar makes or Shoojit Sircar makes. I would love to be part of stories like that and show genuine human emotion.” n July 2022 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 51

The

Power of

Togetherness! INSPIRING COUPLE, BUSINESS LEADERS AND AMAZING PARENTS! MANDEEP SINGH BATTH AND MANJIT KAUR BATTH, A COUPLE WHO DECIDED TO FOLLOW DIFFERENT CAREERS, BUT SHARE ONE VISION. WITH MONEYWALA AND MANJUS.DE, IDEAS ARE BECOMING REALITY. MONEYWALA HELPS AND EMBRACES THE PROGRESS OF THOSE WHO THINK OUT OF THE BOX, AND HAVE IDEAS THAT HELP THE EARTH BECOME A BETTER PLACE. HANAN YEHIA MULAZEM SPEAKS TO THE COUPLE WHO ALWAYS PUT THE PEOPLE FIRST, AND NUMBERS SECOND.

Have you always shared the same professional goals?

Actually, we don’t. We never had the same goals when it comes to professional careers as we are into completely different professions. But, what we share and what we have in common, is our vision. Our vision concentrates on building a multinational conglomerate that cares about people, not numbers. We truly believe that investing in people is the best investment that we can do.

Building an empire as a couple must be inspiring. How did you decide to take the business ahead as power couple?

To inspire others! We know that the power of inspiring others is inside each one of us. The key to move forward is to be focused and persistente. You always have to push boundaries, take risks and move out of your comfort zone. Reaching new levels of success doesn’t happen with making and planning big goals. It happens by making short-term goals that keeps motivating you to keep going. And this is exactly

what we do!

What are the challenges that you’ve faced while building your business?

Nothing comes without challenges. It’s like a package! There’s a saying that we deeply believe in, which says “a smooth sea never makes a skilled sailor”. We look at the challenges and consider them as opportunities. The pandemic was a huge shocker for us, but we took the opportunity to build a more prosperous, equitable and sustainable business. We always felt that there is a huge discrepancy between customer expectations and offerings. It has become easier than ever to change suppliers or brands so often. Digitalization and globalization have opened up more choices for our customers than ever before. But the sales organizations have not yet fully recognized the change in customer behavior. The new customer expectations have not completely replaced the old ones, they have extended them and exactly we work on it which gives us a competitive edge.

Are the work discussions

part of the dinner table talks?

From the sunrise till the sunset, we are always fully and completely occupied. We live in a joint family house, so at the dinner table everyone will ask “How was your day?” and suddenly you find yourself talking about all things business. So, if you want to build an empire, business and work-talks will be your language 24/7.

A business partner and life partner, how’s this motivating for both of you?

Well, the most motivating part of building this empire and starting business, it’s that we are doing it together! We really believe that we set the best example of work-life balance around the world. You should not confuse having a career with having a life.

How was your relationship strengthened by starting this business? Before taking the decision of opening business together, we were employees. So, we used to spend most of our time away from each other.

Now, it’s the opposite. We get a lot of time to spend with each other and get work related things done as well. Our holiday trips are also our business trips, and our hobbies are our money-makers!

What is the way forward for your brand?

Last year, we’ve launched Manju’s Fashion at Filmfare Middle East Achievers Night, and we’ve launched Moneywala at E3AE live event in Dubai. We are planning to extend our focus on Middle East and Asian market. We are looking forward to investing more in events, contests and companies. By the end of this year we will start a contest in PAN India for the first time “Connect2Invest”, where we will be investing in eco-friendly ideas. We are working closely with organizations, celebrities and business tycoons from UAE, Europe and India. It’s very important for us, no matter what we do, that we don’t affect the environment, and try to do something beneficial for it. This is what our brand and group companies stand for.
