WITH A CAMERA FROM MARC

BY JAI TANJU

I got a random phone message from my friend Marc a few years ago. He said, “Hey Jai, I’m coming up to San Jose and I’ve got something for you! I’ll be at Louie’s all weekend so come by and see me.” That sunday I road my bike by Louie’s and there was Marc on the porch with a bottle of red wine. “JAI!”, he said with a slur revealing his purple teeth. We talked for a while and it became apparent that Marc didn’t remember why I was there. “So Marc, you called again about bringing up something for me?”, I asked. He looked at me like I was crazy. Tilting his head just slightly sideways as he thought about it. Then he lit up like a light bulb as he put his finger in the air and exclaimed, “Oh yeah! It’s in my car!” But when the trunk opened it wasn’t there. “Oh shit I forgot it! I’m coming back in two weeks, so I’ll bring it then.”,he said taking a slug off the bottle. He then walked into the house without telling me what it was. A few months went by and I had forgotten all about it. Whatever it was, until I got another message from Marc that sounded just like the first one. That weekend I went by Louie’s again to see if Marc was around and he was. Wine bottle in hand again, happily swigging away, purple teeth and all. This time when he opened his trunk he pulled a camera bag out and handed it to me. “ I bought it at a camera show two years ago and I’ve never used it. Here, it’s yours.” It’s a Pentax Spotomatic 35mm camera with four lenses. There was a 35-2.8, a 50-1.4, a 135-3.5 and a 17mm fisheye. “The meter doesn’t work,” he said, “well that’s what the guy at the photo show told me anyway.” I thanked him. When I got home I took it out of the case and checked it all out. The thing that caught my eye right off was it’s smaller size for a 35mm and the neck strap. I think the neck strap was the most important thing for me. See, I’ve always been more of a point and shoot photographer, so when I wasn’t shooting skating I carried around a T4 all the time. I started to bring the Pentax everywhere with me and immediately I saw a huge difference in all the photos I shot on a day-to-day basis of my friends, the streets and an occasional skate photo or two. This camera basically changed the way I shot photos at a time when I was looking for a different direction, even if it is like riding a bike backwards into a wall. All the pictures in this book where shot with this camera. Thanks Marc! Jai Tanju
