HAMBURGER MARYS HONOLULU REMEMBERED Local filmmaker Arlei Patterson’s film “The Time Of Our Lives” has been officially selected into The 21st Annual Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival 2010. It is a documentary of Hamburger Mary’s Honolulu, beginning in the late 70’s. It is a fun depiction of the 15 year run of the lively bar and grill in the heart of Waikiki. It will take you back to the 70’s and 80’s through still pictures, video, interviews and disco music. The creative characters will reveal to you the rhythm of the night. The move by DC Comics will make her the first ongoing series headlined by an LGBT character. The series, which begins in July, will feature wealthy socialite Kate Kane as the alter ego of Batwoman. Jeff Ayers, manager of Forbidden Planet, a New York City comic book store, told The Daily News that Batwoman has “her own cult following.” “Usually when a publisher has tried gimmicks like that over the years, they beat it to death,” said Ayers. “But it just lingers in the background with her. They treat her like a normal person – which is a fantastic thing.”

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT TO BROADWAY The tale of two ABBA-loving Aussie drag queens and their curmudgeonly transgender pal who take their show on the road through the Australian outback is headed to North America. Adapted from the Oscar-winning 1994 film, Priscilla Queen of The Desert, The Musical is set to open on Broadway March 6, 2011. The West End cast currently includes Oliver Thornton, Jason Donovan, and Don Gallagher, but it isn’t known whether those actors will repeat their roles in the Broadway production. OBAMA EXTENDS VISITATION RIGHTS TO LGBT PARTNERS President Barack Obama is ordering that nearly all hospitals allow patients to say who has visitation rights and who can help make medical decisions, including gay and lesbian partners. The White House released a statement by Obama instructing his Health and Human Services secretary to draft rules requiring hospitals that receive Medicare and Medicaid payments to grant all patients the right to designate people who can visit and consult with them at crucial moments. The designated visitors should have the same rights that immediate family members now enjoy, Obama’s instructions said. It said Medicare-Medicaid hospitals, which include most of the nation’s facilities, may not deny visitation and consultation privileges on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. I
t’s easy to let a vacation or business trip destroy your fitness schedule and eating habits, but why let something as rewarding as a vacation or as exciting as a business trip leave you feeling unhealthy upon return. The whole purpose of a vacation is to relax and take care of you. With a little research and proper planning, you can create an easy to follow plan to keep you fit and healthy no matter where you travel, and you can return home feeling more healthy and energized than when you left. There is no excuse for not finding places to exercise when every city has a great staircase, stadium, or tall buildings where you can master the stairs without a machine. If stairs aren’t your thing, cities have lots of great places for walking, running, or even hiking. Ask the Hotel concierge if there are parks or trials close by. Ask for a map of the city and find out how many of your destinations are reachable by foot. (Walking will increase your fitness level and decrease your taxi fares). Prior to your departure, find out if your hotel has a workout facility and a pool, and remember to pack your bathing suit and at least one workout outfit. Forgetting these items is a great excuse to not work out.

If your hotel does not offer fitness accommodations, bring along a jump rope and an exercise tube. They are both lightweight and easy to transport. Jumping rope is one of the best forms of cardiovascular exercise, and you can do it anywhere. With the exercise tube, and a pre-arranged plan to keep you motivated, you can keep your entire body toned and energized without even entering a
gym. Numerous magazines and web sites offer workout instructions for each body part. And, of course, body weight exercises such as push-ups and crunches require no equipment at all. The point is to find a workout routine that suits your needs and follow it. Remember all the time and energy you put into your exercise is for you. My number one nutritional tips while traveling is to always drink plenty of water, especially when flying. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Pick up portable healthy snacks (fruit, granola bars, nuts, fig bars) at local markets so you wont be caught hungry in front of the mini bar or at the airport where prices are sky high. Try to eat at least three times per day to keep you from feeling famished and overindulging at any one time. By all means go ahead and splurge on regional dished and local cuisine, but balance your diet by choosing lower calorie foods at other meals.
