Thieves Damage Colliery Facilities
A
ll clubs are being advised to ensure that their dressing rooms are well secured and nothing of value to potential thieves is left inside following a break in at Coventry Colliery’s changing rooms in Keresley Village.
Thieves used a sledge hammer and angle grinder to smash their way through the security door before causing serious damage to the facilities. Upcoming matches at the Colliery are now in doubt as the facilities are out of action until full repairs have taken place.
The C&DSL Committee are urging all managers, players and spectators to ensure that any litter created before, during and after games it picked up and disposed of in a responsible manner. This has now become a real problem and there is an increasing threat to all clubs as certain facilities may well be withdrawn if the problem persists.

the match report Alliance 2 side Nuneaton Griff took on Alliance 4 outfit Rugby in this first round cup tie and with 15 minutes on the clock it looked as though Rugby may have been punching above their weight as they struggled to contend with Nuneaton’s attacking style. Rugby dug deep, weathering the storm for almost half an hour before Nuneaton finally went ahead through a well worked goal from Phil Green. Rugby came out with real intent after the break and created some decent chances, the best from Dan Scott who rounded the keeper only to hit the side netting. With both sides now committing men forward in true cup tie spirit it was eventually Nuneaton who went on to seal the win, a long ball on the counter attack exposed Rugby’s defensive line and substitute Jack Webb made no mistake with the finish. the match report Bedworth Ex Service played their get out of jail card during this AW Engraving Premier clash at home to Stockton. Although the Ex’s got off to a great start with an early first half goal from Adam Kinder it was Stockton that looked on top for the remainder of the half, putting together some decent moves, only to be foiled by Andy Needham in the Ex’s goal. Stockton turned up the heat after the break and an equaliser looked to be on the cards. It was however Bedworth who scored the decisive second goal, a low drive from Chris Edwards put
Bedworth 2-0 up. Stockton’s afternoon of missed chances, bad luck and good goalkeeping from Andy Needham appeared to take a turn for the better when referee Dave Gowers awarded them a penalty in the latter stages of the game only for Craig Watkins to fire his spot kick against the bar. With no further goals top come it finished 2 – 0, a fortuitous day for the Ex’s who maintain a decent league position. MoM:Andy Needham (Bedworth)

Division One Brinklow proved they are more than ready for the step up to the Premier Division as they brushed aside Bulkington to progress to the third round of the Bedworth Nursing Cup. Following on from their 2-1 win against Racing Club Warwick of the Midland Combination in the Telegraph Challenge Cup a confident Brinklow set about demolishing Bulkington with a controlled and flowing display. Brinklow took the lead on 35 minutes when a lively Danny
Nelson slipped his marker and calmly slotted home past the advancing keeper. Nelson added his second ten minutes into the second half before completing his hat-trick 15 minutes later, dropping a few Bulkington heads in the process. The home side did go on to play some very attractive football in the second half before Brinlow’s Ashley Marks put the game well and truly to bed with Brinklow’s fourth. MoM: Danny Nelson (Brinklow)

style, throughout the first half. Credit needs to be given to a plucky Minstrel Boy side who came out fighting after the break and after leaking two goals early on in the second half, finally found their way and held strong for the final half an hour. The goals came from Ryan penny (2), William Brian (2) and the free scoring Scott Blakemore (6)
Folly Lane welcomed Canley SS to their London Road ground for this important Premier 1 clash and it was Canley that started out the stronger side, putting the home side under real pressure for prolonged periods in the first half with Folly Lane looking to trouble Canley on the counter attack. The deadlock was finally broken after 20 minutes when Danny Rollings slotted home a well deserved Canley goal. Another Rollings goal and a fine header from the impressive Andy “scouse” Peters followed totalling 3 for Canley on the day. Folly Lane showed real spirit throughout the tie and a comeback looked possible with second half goals from Rich Lee and Chris Allen. In the end however, the hard work and quality Canley had shown in the first 70 minutes proved just enough and they held on for the win.

What are the Community Games all about? The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the biggest sporting event ever to take place in this country. But it’s not just about two weeks of sport in London; it’s a four year cultural celebration right across the UK. Community Games are a way for you to bring your community together to take part in sporting and cultural activities inspired by, and in celebration of, London 2012, giving thousands of people across the West Midlands their own ‘Olympic moment’.
What do the Games look like? A Community Games includes both sporting and cultural events, and some sort of ceremony, ideally an opening and/or closing ceremony. The rest is up to you. So they will probably all look different – some might happen on only one day at one venue, others over a week at lots of different venues. Some will involve an element of competition; others will focus simply on getting people participating in sports or cultural activities they might never have tried before. For more information and to download your Community Games toolkit, visit: www.communitygames.org.uk or contact Tracy Murphy at CSW Sport on: 02476 574441 tracy@cswsport.org.uk

A community could be your street, an estate, your colleagues at work, a ‘friends of’ group from your local park or other public space, your faith group, your children’s school… the list goes on. A community is simply a group of people that come together at some point to share stuff.

Africa Inspires Coventry When London was awarded the 2012 Olympics, Lord Coe made a promise that these games would reach out and inspire the youth of the world. Through the twinning of 5 Coventry schools with 5 schools in the Ugandan city of Kampala the Africa Inspires project is working towards ensuring this happens.
L
ed by Coventry Sports Foundation the scheme is built around the two central themes of sports development and improving access to clean drinking water and ties in with the key Olympic Movement goal of building a peaceful and better world by educating and inspiring youth through sport. Former 5000m world record holder and project ambassador David Moorcroft OBE states “When London was awarded the 2012 Olympics, Seb Coe made a promise that these games would
reach out and inspire the youth of the world. In Coventry and Warwickshire, we have placed this principle at the heart of our Olympic effort. Through the Africa Inspires project the Coventry 2012 Partnership aims to reach out to the youth of Africa in a partnership that extends beyond 2012 and is already working hard to make a difference. So far the scheme has raised thousands of pounds for clean water projects through various fundraising initiatives and made several trips to the twinned schools
in Kampala. During these trips ambassadors, project managers and Coventry school pupils have helped organise and taken part in various sporting events including a Mini Olympics, with the aim of strengthening ties and developing sports coaching and “up-skilling” opportunities in Kampala. The project aims to continue to develop the capacity and skills of those in schools, whilst also serving to build and strengthen communities, both locally and internationally between Kampala and Coventry.

In what is a competitive Alliance 1, we feel we have a squad that is more than capable of competing. The management team of Dave Colkin and Phil Crowder have signed a number of quality players, who have settled in well and things are looking solid. There certainly seems to be a momentum building at the club and it’s great to see there is real support and engagement from the community. What can we expect to see from the club over
the next few years? We are always looking to improve/progress both on and off the field, we are hoping to reform our junior section, and are forming links through other local groups, such as the local school, cricket clubs and scouts. We have already signed senior players through these links, and feel confident that we have established community bonds, that will enable us to promote the development of junior teams in the future.

What are the key themes and aims of the Respect campaign? Respect is focused on improving the relations between players, managers and referees and improving the behaviour of touchline spectators in grassroots football. It seeks to promote the idea of Collective responsibility – we’ve all got a part to play to protect the good of the game.
show some Respect With improvements in discipline and respect at the forefront of both the amateur and professional agenda in recent years, Final Whistle talks to the Football Associations Respect Manager Dermot Collins about the FA’s national Respect Campaign.
www.final-whistle.net
Why do you think it is seen that football has more behavioural problems than other main stream sports in the UK? Football is the country’s most popular sport and the game will reflect the society it derives from. It is also a passionate and committed contact sport which will inevitably sometimes result in moments of conflict. Having said this we have allowed a culture of ill discipline and poor conduct to develop in some areas of football, this is something the Respect campaign seeks to challenge. Do you feel that football should perhaps move towards going down the route of Rugby in the way it allows players to interact with referees? I certainly believe that there are things that can be learnt from Rugby in relation to the education of young players. I don’t believe that you could arbitrarily introduce a Rugby approach into adult football but we should seek to establish
“we should seek to establish the respect of officials in young players and their parents for the future good of the game ” dermot collins the respect of officials in young players and their parents for the future good of the game. Confrontation and disrespect for match officials can be seen each and every week on MOTD, what effect do you feel this has on amateur players and particularly young people? It doesn’t help – and without doubt many people feel that the poor example of professionals provides a license for grassroots players to imitate. Whilst I can accept that people feel strongly about this I don’t accept it’s an excuse not to take responsibility for your own behaviour. Just how big is the nationwide issue of referee numbers and what could this mean for the 11-a-side amateur game? The number of referees has actually increased and most leagues report higher levels of
referee coverage than in 2008. We do however have to accept that many of these are younger referees who need to be given the chance to develop their skills and experience. Ultimately the 11-a-side game has to protect and retain its referees otherwise we don’t have a game! Is the problem of abuse and violence in the grassroots game improving or getting worse? In general the Respect campaign has contributed to a better environment for the recruitment and retention of Referees (we have 6,000 more qualified officials than in 2008), a reduction in serious Referee assaults and improving the atmosphere in Youth Football. However, there is still a great deal to do and we are looking at adding more’ teeth’ to the programme to deal with the teams/players who refuse to improve their conduct. l

Going the Extra Mile
Joel Poirier and Nicola Sherlock
Nutrition and hydration are key performance factors both on and off the field of play, this issue our resident fitness and sports therapy experts EliteTherapy Coventry guide us through the importance of pre, during and post match nutrition www.final-whistle.net
Preparation is the key to performance on this one and that starts with breakfast. A good match day breakfast 5 – 8 hours before a game should contain whole grain cereals and/or cereals high in carbohydrate and low in fat. Other options include bagels, muffins, toast with jam and fresh fruit. It’s important to try and make time for this; avoiding breakfast will lead to depleted glycogen stores and an increased risk of fatigue. Your pre game meal should be eaten around 3 – 4 hours before kick-off. High in carbohydrates and low in fat and fibre your meal should have low Glycemic Index and release energy slowly (think pasta, noodles and rice). Taking on a snack around 2 hours before a game is fine, but try not to eat too much after this period. Snack options include bagels, fruit, sandwiches and low fat cookies. Hydration throughout the day is vitally important, try and drink 300-600ml with your pre match meal and the 150-300ml leading up to kick off, remembering to void drinks containing caffeine such as coke, coffee and alcohol.
During
After Post game, it is important to replenish glycogen stores sooner rather than later, around thirty minutes post exercise is the best time to eat. In the meantime you can be rehydrating yourself – sipping water or an energy drink works well. Your post match meal should be high in carbohydrates and should include pasta, rice or potatoes, meat and vegetables. As it’s not always possible to have big meal straight after, fruit and sandwiches can be eaten followed
During the game taking on energy drinks as well as water is a good idea as it keeps energy levels high. It’s vital you take fluid on board when necessary, if you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated! by a meal up to 2 hours post game. And remember, it’s not just about match day. Maintaining a healthy diet and keeping hydrated throughout the week gives you the best chance of optimising your performance on the pitch come the weekend!

Cristiano Ronaldo has one of the most explosive free-kick techniques ever to grace the beautiful game. This issue Final Whistle brings you a step-by-step guide to perfecting the technique, delivered to you directly from the UEFA Training Ground.
Step 1 Make a small divot in the ground and place the ball in/directly behind it. When you strike the ball it will jump up, ensuring more dip in flight.
Step 2 Place the ball with the valve facing you. This is the hardest part of the ball, striking through the valve will help it travel faster through the air.
Step 5
Step 4
Step 3
Strike the ball with your leg moving in a straight action, connecting with the valve and punching through the ball with the laces of your boot.
When striking the ball, Ronaldo has a very short backlift. Movement below the knee is all important, with a short-punchy action generating the power in the shot.
Take three or four steps back and set yourself in line with the ball, standing directly behind the direction you want the ball to travel.

King of the Wing l tactics
In a UEFA Training Ground exclusive, former England manager Graham Taylor provides Final Whistle readers with his guide to maximising the impact of the winger in the modern game.
SEEING THE WHOLE PICTURE “The first thing that I advise all wingers and wide midfield players to do when your side is in possession of the ball is hug the touchline. Why? If you stand on the touchline and look, you see everything. This is of great value because football is about creating pictures in your mind. Where are the opposition? Where is the space? Who is running and where? It is no good playing with your head down, all you’ll see is the grass…”
CREATING SPACE FOR TEAM-MATES
“Just by getting yourself out wide, you are creating opportunities
www.final-whistle.net
for other players. You drag the opposition out of position, which enables space to be created elsewhere. Even if the full-back is aware of the player out wide he often daren’t come out too far to meet him because if the winger attacks then he (the full back) could very easily be caught out of position. Does that mean that the opposition’s wide midfielder gets pulled back? Yes, very often this is the case. For that reason it may not always be possible to get the ball out to your winger but simply by being there he is doing a job.”
DANGEROUS CROSSES
“One thing that full-backs don’t like is wingers who cross the ball, simply because wingers
are crossing the ball into the goal-scoring areas. If the full back’s marking you and you have a chance to put a cross in, I would suggest take it. If you can beat him and get to the by-line before crossing then better still.”
GOALSCORING OPPORTUNITIES
“What about scoring yourself as a winger? We often see crosses come in with no attacking player there to trap the back post and stick the ball in the net. As a winger, you should be attacking this space, in doing so you’ll be creating real goal -scoring opportunities for you and your team”.
