he Coventry Alliance League season opened on August 20th for Alliance Premier side’s, albeit with a depleted fixture list due to some of those clubs with shared facilities having to make way for the final games of the cricketing season to be played. Early pace setters The Bell (Rugby) made an inspired start to the season in the Alliance Premier, dropping just two points from their opening five league
fixtures before sharing the points away at Woodlands 17/09/11. Now third in the league and with a semi final spot in the Stan Oulds Trophy also in the bag, early reports suggest they could be serious contenders this season. Highway Coundon have also made their intentions clear early on this season, currently sitting at the top of the Premier League with four wins from four, they look like the team to beat this season.
The opening round of the Stan Oulds Trophy (the Premier Leagues internal cup) were played on the final two Tuesdays in August and saw Ambleside, Christ the King, HighwayCoundon and The Bell (Rugby) all successfully make their way to the semi final stages. The two semi’s will be played under floodlights at Copsewood during October with the final at the same venue on Boxing Day.

the matCh rePort Copswood welcomed Highway Coundon to Allard Way for this Alliance Premier clash and from the word go Highway Coundon looked a very sharp outfit indeed. After stringing together a series
of impressive attacking moves the visitors took the lead through Dave Scott half way through the first half. Credit needs to be given to what was a young Copeswood line up who fought hard throughout the tie, battling well against a Coundon side in fine form. In the end however it was the visitors strength in depth that shone through and they went on to record a comprehensive 0-5 victory with further goals from Steph McGrath, Nick Kirk, Shane Brassington and Tom Maguire. the matCh rePort The Alan Higgs Centre was the venue for this Alliance 4 tie, with both sides looking to kick off the season with a valuable win. After a lively start it was Church Lawford that took the early initiative with a goal from pacey new signing Shaun Isherwood. A handful of half chances followed from both sides before the first half came to a close with Church Lawford still a goal to the good. The second half began with Peugeot looking the more likely candidates for a goal as their midfield began to find more time and space in the centre of the park. This continued pressure paid off, resulting in two goals in quick succession from Chiddie Kalli and Ben Adeeko. Both sides went on to create several more chances in what was a well contested second period but it was Peugeot that went on to seal the win with a late third goal from the eye catching Joelle Morgan MoM: JoELLE MoRGaN

fter much hard work over the Summer months the new Coventry and District Sunday Leagues season has got off to a great start, with no fewer than 17 new teams across all divisions. The highest placed of the new boys are Coventry Olympic whom during their interview presented
sufficient evidence to suggest they could compete at Premier 2 level. So far it’s been a tough start in Premier 2 for Olympic, recording losses in both of their opening league games. However, early reports indicate they are playing some good football so it shouldn’t be long until we see them climbing the ladder.

the matCh rePort League new boys Coventry Olympic took on Premier 1 leaders Woods United in this Presidents Cup first round tie at Warwick University. Olympic came out strong, whipping up early pressure which paid off through a headed goal from Jake McIlwaine at just gone the 10 minute mark. It was Woods that continued to press for the majority of the first half and it paid off with a well worked goal from the impressive Craig Civelis after half an hour. The second half saw both sides continue to push in true cup tie fashion with Olympic causing Woods real problems on the counter attack, breaking through one-on-one on two occasions but failing to find the net. It was however Woods that edged it on the day, the second goal coming from young playmaker Ryan Isherwood who slotted home from 10yards. MoM RyaN IsHERWooD

Woods united now sit at the top table of the C&dSl for the first time in their history, Final Whistle talks to club Chairman PETE FARRElly and first team manager lEE dAvIES about the journey so far. FW: Woods United is obviously now a very well established club but some readers may be surprised to hear that the club has only been in existence for 17 years now, how was the club formed? PF: The club was formed in 1993 when a crop of local lads turned 18 and could no longer play minor league football. These same players have formed the basis of the club for the last 17 years or so with the likes of Ben Sailsbury, Nick Wally and Tom Williams still actively involved, albeit with slightly more deep heat and strapping involved these days!
www.final-whistle.net
FW: And what’s been your greatest ever Season so far? PF: Probably our first year in adult football to be honest -1994-95 season. The vast majority of the lads were just
18 years old and in their first year of senior football. We went through the league programme without defeat, winning the league championship and the Intermediate Cup in style.

“ i Certainly Want us to have a riGht GooD Go this year, iF We Can Consistently Play to our Potential i think We miGht surPrise a FeW PeoPle.” LEE DAvIES, FIRST TEAM MANAGER
FW: Every club has a behind the scenes “unsung hero”, who’s yours? PF: We have several but none more so than Paul Salisbury, a pillar of strength throughout the years... FW: And on the pitch, who in your opinion has been the clubs greatest ever player? PF: Tricky one, I would say the greatest ‘player’s player’ would have to be Phil Shail. Phil joined the club early on as we progressed through the leagues at an alarming rate, his leadership, strength and footballing ability rubbed off on all the younger lads, who have since passed this on to the next generation of players.
FW: You’re new in the job this year, how did that come about? LD: I grew up in the village and played for the club from age 16 to 23 before injury ended my playing days. I went away and got my coaching badges and have been coaching at junior level but as soon as I knew the Woods job was up for grabs I threw my cap in the ring. FW: Woods are now in unprecedented territory in Premier 1, what are your targets for the season? LD: I haven’t really set any targets per se but I certainly want us to have a right good go this year, if we can consistently play to our potential I think we might surprise a few people.
(above) Woods United 1st, 2011/12
FW: And how is the side looking? LD: With the lads winning promotion last season the most important part of pre season for me was to make sure as many as them as possible signed on again for this season. Having said that I have managed to bring in couple of new faces but we’re looking nicely balanced.

Now in his twentieth year as a CCFC employee, CITy lEgENd dAvE BuSST takes time out to talk football with Final Whistle. With over 50 Premiership appearances for the Sky Blues under his belt, to this day Dave Busst remains a firm favourite amongst the CCFC faithful. Since his career came to such a sudden end just over two minutes into a Premiership tie at Old Trafford almost 15 years ago, Dave has worked for the Sky Blues in the Community initiative, and now heads up the project.

Q: Can you tell us a bit more about the goals and objectives of the sky Blues in the Community initiative? a: Well, under the four themes of sports participation, health, education and social inclusion we hope to positively impact on the lives of children and adults in the community through the various activities and projects we offer. Q: How important do you feel today’s grassroots game is to the professional game and the continued development of the home nations international teams?
a: Grassroots football is the foundation on which our footballing standards are based. Not one professional player could say that it hasn’t played a role in their long term development. Q: and how about locally, do you get to watch much amateur football? a: When I’m not at Coventry games I watch my local team Solihull Moors who I played for before Coventry and went on to manage once my playing career ended. Q: you mentioned you played non-league football before signing for The City, what advice would you give to talented local players striving to take their game to the highest possible level? a: I signed for Coventry when I was 24 and went from playing in division 7 of the Birmingham Works League to The Premiership in 8 years! It was my first goal and we drew 1-1. It was on Match of the Day in the evening and I watched it in the pub with my family and friends Q: Whilst playing for a Premiership side you’re obviously coming up against top class player’s week in week out, but who stands out for you as the best player you’ve ever lined up against? a: For me there are two, Alan Shearer before his knee operation, who was probably the best striker in the world at that time, and Ian Wright. Ian had come up through the nonleague game and scrapped for everything on the pitch making him very hard to play against, he had a hunger for the game only certain players get.

a huge impact on many aspects of your life, where did you draw strength and inspiration from during that time? a: Family full stop, in particular my dad. Q: and what about teammates, who’s number one for you? a: Dion Dublin had a positive effect on the team as soon as he was brought in from Man Utd. Dion was another non-league player who made it all the way to the top and he never looked down on anyone he came across. Also Paul Williams, Paul went through everything with me after I got injured and I will always thank him for that. Q: suffering such a serious injury as you did must have had
Q: and finally, after a difficult end to the season last year some camps have tipped the City for relegation. How do you think they will fair this term? I think we get tipped every year to be honest. Although our squad is not the biggest Andy Thorn has given a few very talented 17 year-olds their chance this season which gives the side a real energy. This along with the style of football we try to play should see us right. I think we will probably finish mid table. l

Just Play We’ve all seen the Tv ads but exactly what is the FA’s new Just Play! initiative? Final Whistle catches up with National Project manager ColIN mooRE to find out.
What it’s the FA’s Just Play initiative? FA Mars Just Play! is a key part of The FA’s National Game Strategy which is directing £200 million into grassroots football in order to support growth and continually raise standards. In terms of numbers, The FA and Sport England together with the support of Mars, are working to attract 150,000 new adults into football by September 2013 and we hope that more than 100 FA Mars Just Play! Centres will help us achieve this. So why are less and less adults playing football in the UK? People are still playing football but not necessarily in the
www.final-whistle.net
traditional 11-a-side format which is where we have seen the drop off over recent years. The reasons for this decline are wide ranging but do include work, family or other time commitments, lack of playing opportunities due to perceived ability level and lack of participation opportunities within the community. One of the outcomes we hope to achieve through Just Play is greater insight into why people choose to stop playing. What can individuals do to get involved in the initiative? FA Mars Just Play! Centres host sessions on a weekly basis, players of all abilities can turn up

“Football alreaDy has a lonG history oF imProvinG Community relations WhiCh We hoPe to builD uPon throuGh the Centres.” ColIN mooRE, FA NATIoNAl PRoJECT mANAgER as often as they want for a game that fits in with their schedule, it’s as easy as that. For those looking to break into 11-a-side FA Mars Just Play! Centres are a great way to gain confidence and improve fitness before making that step. The official website (justplay.thefa. com) also has an email function that allows players to make that initial contact with club officials. I suppose it’s not only the health and fitness of those involved in these ‘kick abouts’ that stand to improve here but also social and community relations? The additional benefits to the initiative are numerous, and football already has a long history of improving community relations which we hope to build upon through the centres. And is it actually working? Are people turning up to these informal kick abouts? It’s early days but we are finding that as word spreads centre numbers are continuing to rise and our player retention rates are good, we have also seen the creation of some brand new 11-a-side clubs of the back of the initiative which is great. We are
still developing the monitoring and evaluation aspect of the project as it is important we can properly asses the results we believe this programme will deliver. What can Just Play offer clubs and organisations looking for increased community engagement and player numbers? We are delivering this project right to the heart of communities, further reducing barriers around travel and accessibility, which can be a real problem at grassroots level. We are also working to support local clubs with player recruitment, centres can assist clubs not only in sustaining and growing numbers but also in identifying local talent they may not otherwise be aware of. l

All divisions are looking healthy this season with most teams now having played at least 2 games. Considering the number of new teams we have onboard this season it’s great to see the leagues looking as competitive as ever. A number of sides remain unbeaten at this early stage with Phantom United leading the charge.

ll Coventry Alliance teams held a one minute silence before their games on 17th September in remembrance of league President Ted Boscott, who sadly passed away 14th September following a long illness. A much liked and well respected member of the Alliance management team Ted served on the committee for over 40 years before eventually succeeding to the role of President, an honour of which he was very proud. Ted made a great many friends throughout his time with the league and it was both fitting and pleasing to hear of the number of tributes paid to him on and off the pitch following the news of his death. For a great many years Ted was the League’s match
secretary, spending his Saturday afternoons tirelessly registering details of results and scorers before sending them to the newspapers for publication. 100% committed to the league, Ted worked hard throughout his time to ensure that standards were upheld and the leagues continued to progress. Ted’s name and memory will continue to live on through the Leagues, the committee, the clubs and the community he worked so closely with for so many years. Written by the Coventry Alliance Commitee.
