Greetings, Historic St. Paul family, As always, Sister Strode and I are praying with and for you, especially during these crises. As People of faith and hope in Jesus Christ, we turn to God in times of fear and uncertainty as we do in times of joy and celebration. Rest assured that our beautiful church family is here to love and assist one another. In the face of uncertainty, we continue to celebrate 200 years of strength and perseverance. God will most certainly not leave or for sake us. He brought us too far to leave us now! Let us pray for God’s heart of love, mercy, and truth to dwell in us and show us how to face the challenges posed by the coronavirus: Jesus, during Your ministry on Earth You showed Your power and caring by healing people of all ages and stations of life from physical, mental, and spiritual ailments. We are in need of Your loving touch, because of COVID-19. May the sick feel Your power of healing through the care of doctors and nurses. Take away the fear, anxiety, and feelings of isolation from people receiving treatment or under quarantine. Farther, give them a sense of purpose in pursuing health and protecting others from exposure to the disease. Protect their families and friends and bring peace to all who love them. I pray that during these crises that we reflect upon the scriptures; “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” — Philippians 4:6 (NIV). Blessings, Pastor Strode 2
Noteworthy Dates in April 2020 April, spring has finally sprung, and the weather will reflect that! We pray that your sky is bright and clear and your grass is growing green. Since COVID-19 having us practicing Social Distancing…Lets check out the April holidays, recipes, gardening tips, and folklore! April 8 marks the start of Passover (beginning at sundown). What is Passover? The holiday of Pesach, or Passover, is an annual weeklong festival commemorating the emancipation of Jewish peoples from slavery (in ancient Egypt). The Hebrew name, “Pesach,” means “to passover” because the plague in Egypt that killed all firstborns passed over the Israelites’ homes, sparing the lives of their children. Passover is a springtime festival April 10 is Good Friday. Good Friday, also known as Great Friday, Holy Friday, or Sorrowful Friday, is a major Christian observance that commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. It is a time for Christians to reflect upon his suffering and willing sacrifice to atone for the sins of mankind. Churches may offer special services, as well as cover crosses with black cloth as a sign of mourning. For some worshippers, it is a day of fasting. Good Friday occurs two days before Easter (which celebrates Christ’s resurrection). It is part of Holy Week, which starts with Palm Sunday and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. In certain countries, such as Canada, it is an official public holiday. In the United States, a number of states declare this a state holiday. Traditional foods served on Good Friday include hot cross buns. These spiced sweet buns usually contain currants or raisins and are topped with icing in the shape of a cross. April 12 is Easter Sunday. Easter is the most important feast day in the Christian calendar. Regularly observed from the earliest days of the Church, Easter celebrates Christ’s resurrection from the dead, following crucifixion. It marks the end of Holy Week, the end of Lent, and the last day of the Easter Triduum (starting from the evening of Maundy Thursday, through Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday), as well as the beginning of the Easter season of the liturgical year. The resurrection represents the triumph of good over evil, sin, death, and the physical body. (April 19 is Orthodox Easter.)
3
Liturgical Observances In the Christian calendar, Easter follows Lent, the period of 40 days (not counting Sundays) before Easter, which traditionally is observed by acts of penance and fasting. Easter is immediately preceded by Holy Week, which includes Maundy Thursday, the commemoration of Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples; Good Friday, the day of his Crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, the transition between Crucifixion and Resurrection. Liturgically, Easter comes after the Great Vigil, which was originally observed sometime between sunset on Easter Saturday and sunrise on Easter Sunday. Later it would be celebrated in Western churches on Saturday evening, then on Saturday afternoon, and finally on Sunday morning. In 1955 the Roman Catholic Church set the time for the vigil at 10 pm, which allowed for the Easter mass to be celebrated after midnight. In the Orthodox traditions the vigil continues to be an important liturgical event, while in Protestant churches it is little known. By the 4th century the Easter vigil was well established in various liturgical expressions. It was characterized by a spirit of joyful anticipation of the Resurrection and—because of the belief that Jesus’ Second Coming would occur on Easter—the return of Jesus. In the Roman Catholic tradition the vigil has four parts: the celebration of lights focused on the Paschal candle; the service of lessons called the prophecies; the administration of the sacraments of baptism and confirmation to adult converts; and the Easter mass. The use of the Paschal candle, to denote the appearance of light out of darkness through the Resurrection, was first recorded in the year 384; by the 10th century it had gained general usage. The prominence of baptism at Easter goes back to early Christianity, probably the 4th century, when baptism was administered only once a year, at Easter. In the Roman Catholic service the priest blesses the water to be used in the forthcoming year for baptism, with the faithful taking some of that water with them to receive protection from vicissitudes. Lutheran and Anglican churches use variations of this vigil service. All Christian traditions have their own special liturgical emphases for Easter. The Easter sunrise service, for example, is a distinctive Protestant observance in North America. The practice may derive from the Gospel narrative of Jesus’ Resurrection, which states that Mary Magdalene went to the tomb “while it was still dark” (John 20:1) or as dawn was breaking
4
(Matthew 28:1 and Luke 24:1). It is a service of jubilation that takes place as the sun ris Easter customs Easter, like Christmas, has accumulated a great many traditions, some of which have little to do with the Christian celebration of the Resurrection but derive from folk customs. The custom of the Easter lamb appropriates both the appellation used for Jesus in Scripture (“behold the lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world,” John 1:29) and the lamb’s role as a sacrificial animal in ancient Israel. In antiquity Christians placed lamb meat under the altar, had it blessed, and then ate it on Easter. Since the 12th century the Lenten fast has ended on Easter with meals including eggs, ham, cheeses, bread, and sweets that have been blessed for the occasion. The use of painted and decorated Easter eggs was first recorded in the 13th century. The church prohibited the eating of eggs during Holy Week, but chickens continued to lay eggs during that week, and the notion of specially identifying those as “Holy Week” eggs brought about their decoration. The egg itself became a symbol of the Resurrection. Just as Jesus rose from the tomb, the egg symbolizes new life emerging from the eggshell. In the Orthodox tradition eggs are painted red to symbolize the blood Jesus shed on the cross. Easter egg hunts are popular among children in the United States.

Celebrate Earth Day 2020 Earth Day 2020 will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 22! This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this day. On Earth Day, enjoy the lovely scent of fresh air, clean up some litter, plant a tree, or simply enjoy companionship with nature! Walk through the woods in search of emerging wildflowers and green moss. Go outside, no matter the weather! The 50th Anniversary of Earth Day: Earth Day 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of this holiday. Typically, Earth Day is assigned a different theme or area of focus each year; this year’s theme is Climate Action. Events ranging from river clean ups to environmental lectures to rallies will take place on this day (Wednesday, April 22 What Is Earth Day? Ever wonder how Earth Day began? The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, with the goal of raising awareness about mankind’s role in protecting our natural world. On this date, 20 million Americans ventured outdoors and protested in favor of a more ecoconscious society. It’s hard to believe today, but at the time, many people were not aware of some serious environmental issues—from air pollution to toxic dumps to pesticides to loss of wilderness. Earth Day started out as more of a political movement, though today it has become a popular day for many communities to gather together and clean up litter, plant trees, or simply reflect on the beauty of nature. Celebrate Earth Day by appreciating and respecting the natural world. Here are some ideas to inspire you! Plant wildflowers! Start an organic vegetable garden. Conserve water! Also, avoid over-watering. Clean up your community by organizing a group to pick up litter in a local park or roadway. Cut back on plastic consumption! . Consider how to reduce dependency on bottled water and drinks. Learn how to reuse in the kitchen, reuse in the home and re-purpose everyday household items!

When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into His sixth day of "overtime" when the angel appeared and said. "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one." And God said, "Have you read the specs on this order?" She has to be completely washable, but not plastic. Have 180 moveable parts...all replaceable. Run on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. And six pairs of hands." The angel shook her head slowly and said. "Six pairs of hands.... no way." It's not the hands that are causing me problems," God remarked, "it's the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have." That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. God nodded. One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, 'What are you kids doing in there?' when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn't but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say. 'I understand and I love you' without so much as uttering a word." God," said the angel touching his sleeve gently, "Get some rest tomorrow...." I can't," said God, "I'm so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick...can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger...and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower." The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. "It's too soft," she sighed. But tough!" said God excitedly. "You can imagine what this mother can do or endure." Can it think?" Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise," said the Creator. Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek. There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model." It's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear." What's it for?" It's for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride." You are a genius, " said the angel. Somberly, God said, "I didn't put it there. ― Erma Bombeck, When God Created Mothers

SUNDAY, MAY 17, 2020 Christianity has consistently pointed to the value of women in our culture as a whole and within the church of Jesus Christ. Nearly every leader through church history has been helped along by women. In fact, it’s safe to say that without women, the church of Christ would not be what God intended from the beginning. We must celebrate the God intended purpose for women in our world! From the privileged role of motherhood to the high calling of a wife (Prov. 18:22)—women have a special design by God. When women understand their calling and seek to flourish within God’s intended design, they are to be praised. So, we should pay close attention to the message of the culture that’s consistently pressing women to do what God hasn’t called them to do as a means of fulfillment when there’s so much women can and should be doing for God’s glory? •
God created Eve distinct from Adam with a purpose (Genesis 2).
•
God used Rahab (Joshua 6:17; Matthew 1:5).
•
God chose Mary for a special and unique purpose (Matt. 1:18-20).
•
God used women all throughout the early church (Acts 1:12–14; 9:36– 42; 16:13–15; 17:1–4, 10–12; 18:1–2, 18, 24–28; Romans 16; 1 Corinthians 16:19; 2 Timothy 1:5; 2:10; 4:19). Women’s Day Theme: “Transformed

LIVING PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK: Paul said he learned how to be content whether he had plenty of money and resources, or whether money was in short supply. He learned that by relying on God’s strength (Philippians 4:11-13). There will be times of excess and times of need in our lives. Beyond that, remember that God promises to not only supply our every need, but to do so liberally (Philippians 4:19). The Church has set up ways to continue to give during this crisis. To the Men of St. Paul……We the Women of the Church wish to say, it is our intention to support you and your endeavors in Kingdom Building. We are all in this together…(I Corinthians 3:9) So we support you and acknowledge your work and ministry in the Church. We pray for you and your spiritual growth, that God will give you grace and the will to carry on in His Name…. We challenge you…Yes, there it is …we challenge you…Are you up for the challenge? We believe (or think) that you are looking to be challenged, that you are looking to be given something to accomplish—something that will challenge you. We believe that God has designed you to be passionate and skilled about many things…Therefore, you must be Challenged..See “us” after the COVID-19….. Here are a few examples I have seen done in different churches: 1) We challenge you to take your wife out to dinner and or cook dinner once a week for an entire month ..?????? 2) We challenge you to pray with your kids each night for one week and see how it changes their your relationships with their kids. No children of your own, or children grown and gone ..NO EXCUSE..our children need your
10
presence in their lives. We have single mothers in the Church..Sports, Scouts, Outings, Events..to name a few. 3) We challenge you to be more involved…..SUNDAY SCHOOL, BIBLE STUDY, MEN’S MINISTRY, and the CHURCH in general…Be Creative… find ways to be an intricate part of the Church and worship Service…to attend the Men’s Bible Study (4th Sundays), the Men of Revelation (chorus) Truth is not only the Pastor, but Every man has something to say. Every man has joys, worries, complaints, past hurts, opportunities, etc., stirring within their hearts, but many of them have no outlet by which they can share these things….Your Pastor is available…Call him., he will listen. They often hold a position in their job where they cannot speak their mind, and when they are home, they feel uncomfortable sharing what’s going on in their hearts with their spouses or friends for fear of being seen as a failure. However, many are willing to talk with a pastor that they trust and have built a relationship with. And it’s our calling to listen to them and hear them out. We are pursuing the Same Goal - Both women and men are integral to the growth and health of the Church and each bring specific gifts that can benefit the Body of Christ. Ultimately, as Christ-followers, we are all pursuing the same goal. “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:26-29).

KNOW YOUR CHURCH Presented by The Lay Organization in collaboration with the Media & Public Relations (MPR) Team
The health and safety of our members and communities is of the upmost importance to Historic St. Paul AME Church. We hope to make your aware and help prevent and reduce the spread of the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19). The new coronavirus is a respiratory virus. The most common symptoms are fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. COVID 19 is spread primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose. The period within which the symptoms would appear is 2-14 days. According to available preliminary data, the median time from onset to clinical recovery for mild cases is approximately 2 weeks and is 3-6 weeks for patients with severe or critical disease. In more severe cases infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and even death. People of all ages can be infected. Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.
Prevention There is currently no vaccine to prevent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best prevention is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, the CDC always recommends everyday actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including: •
Do not visit Patients if you have flu or cold symptoms: – fever, chills, body aches or cough.
13
•
• • • • •
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay home when you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw away the tissue and wash your hands. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects (like doorknobs and countertops) using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
Watch for Symptoms Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death for confirmed COVID-19 cases. The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure. • • •
Fever Cough Shortness of Breath
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get call your healthcare provider immediately for further guidance before visiting the facility. Emergency warning signs include*: • • • •
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath Persistent pain or pressure in the chest New confusion or inability to arouse Bluish lips or face
*This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.
