WHICH SEGMENTS ARE DOING WELL IN WOUND CARE MARKET IN INDIA? Traditional wound care is the primary treatment approach in India. The segment has witnessed huge demand for products such as cotton, gauge, dressings and bandages. These products are affordable by everyone and enjoy high adoption in medical institutions, clinics and end consumers. Traditional wound care products were the highest revenue generating segment in the wound care market of the country and accounted for ~% of the overall market share as of FY’2017. Owing to perception of high cost-low benefit for advanced wound care products, the use of traditional products has been rampant. Counterfeit and local substitutes are easily available for products in this segment and there existed a continuous downward pressure on pricing. India Wound Care Market Outlook to 2022

WHAT IS THE KEY TRENDS IN INDIA WOUND CARE MARKET? In a breakthrough discovery, Bamboo used to develop new wound care dressing: A team of doctors from the Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing in Punjab, India has created a special new dressing type composed of bamboo. In order to come up with an effective wound healing or dressing material, they used bamboo leaves to isolate certain nanocrystals that can facilitate the wound healing process. Bamboo has a unique molecular makeup which enables harvesting of nanoparticles in a timely manner. When tested on lab rats, within two weeks wounds had closed and hair follicles began to grow which was a promising sign of effective wound care. In addition, bamboo was found to have antibacterial tendencies, preventing several different strains of bacteria from infecting wound sites. The team believes the bamboo dressings work by accelerating the growth of collagen fibers as well as immune cells associated with inflammation, two essential compounds for wounds to heal properly. Furthermore, bamboo was also able to prevent foulsmelling odors in most wounds. Silk protein-derived product developed by a Bengaluru based company for traditional wound dressing: Sericare, a Bengaluru based company has developed a silk-protein derived product (Fibroheal) that can be used in place of traditional dressing for wounds. The dressing is produced from cut cocoons after the silkworm has left the cocoon and so is a cleaner alternative to collagen dressings, currently the only form of dressing other than skin grafts, which actively help in healing of wounds.

The product has received support from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and is being used in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, Command Hospital, Bengaluru, and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry. A clinical trial at AIIMS conducted by Sushma Sagar and her colleagues with the Department of Trauma Surgery showed favorable results. The dressing was applied on the donor area (area from which skin graft is taken to apply to raw area) of 30 patients (60 donor sites in all). The team of researchers harvested skin graft and applied dressing in two parts, one being paraffin dressing and the other the silk protein dressing. The doctors observed that dressing removal was less painful for the silk protein dressing and healing took place faster, often within seven to nine days. Government initiatives towards prevention of injuries: The National Programme for Prevention of Burn Injuries was setup in 2011 as a pilot project. The goal is to ensure prevention of burns and capacity building of infrastructure and manpower at different levels of health care delivery system. The programme aims to provide timely and adequate treatment to burn patients and reduce mortality, complications along with providing effective rehabilitation to the survivors. The programme was launched in the current Five Year Plan (2012-2017) in Medical colleges and their adjoining district hospitals in few states. Subsequently, in the next five year plan it will be rolled out in all the medical colleges and districts hospitals of the country.

India Wound Care Market Outlook to 2022

WHAT ARE THE GROWTH PROSPECTS OF THE WOUND CARE MARKET IN INDIA? Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent form of arthritis in India which affects over 15 million adults every year. The current treatment solution is surgery involving a transplant and only 10% of the Indians undergo the surgery due to fear of late recovery. India is expected to be the osteoarthritis capital of the world by 2025 with over 60 million cases. The current rate of 10% patients undergoing joint replacement surgeries is expected to incline in the near future owing to rising per capita income and increasing disease burden. India has fast become a global health destination, with the medical tourism industry growing at 30% every year. Over 26 million surgeries were performed in the country in 2016 and reportedly the country’s need for surgeries stood at around 65 million. Hence, with increase in number of hospital and specialized doctors, the number of surgeries performed in the country is going to incline at a steady pace. All these factors would result in positive growth of the market at a CAGR of ~% during the period FY’2017-FY’2022. Figure: India Wound Care Market Future Outlook on the Basis of Revenue in INR Billion, FY’2018-FY’2022 20,000.00 INR Billion

India wound care market has been mainly driven by technological advances, increasing aging population, problems associated with ineffective traditional wound healing methods and growing incidences of chronic and acute wounds. Rising prevalence of diabetes, attempts to lower the duration of hospital stay in order to reduce the healthcare expenses and the growing inclination towards products that enhance therapeutic outcomes are also driving the demand for the advanced wound care products. Rise in incidence and prevalence of acute and chronic wounds: Both chronic and acute wounds cases have inclined by 3-4% annually in the last five years. The prevalence rate of chronic wounds in India stood at 4.5 per 1,000 population and incidence rate of acute wounds was more than double at 10.5 per 1,000 population, as of FY’2016. Incidence and prevalence of both acute and chronic wounds are likely to incline in the near future by 4-5% annually. Furthermore, the number of lymphoedema cases due to Filariasis is also expected to incline from 23 million cases to 25 million cases each year by 2020. Surging surgeries: The number of surgical births in the country has risen at an unprecedented rate of 16.7% annually in the last five years. India is set to witness further rise in caesarean surgeries going forward. Furthermore, the number of plastic surgeries including breast augmentation, face lifts, brow lifts, eye lifts and liposuction is expected to rise significantly in the mid-long term.
