FINANSSI ry
The association of Oulu Business Students
F
inanssi ry is the Association of Oulu Business School Students. In Oulu student associations are often called student guilds and Finanssi is the very own student guild for all the business students in the University of Oulu. Finanssi was founded in 1991 when business degree education first began in the University of Oulu. At the time, teaching was organised in the Department of Business of the Faculty of Technology. Finally in 2000, Oulu Business School as a separate faculty was founded for teaching economics and business administration. These days Finanssi has over 1600 members, which makes it one of the largest business students’ associations in Finland. All degree students at the University of Oulu can join as full members who get all the membership benefits. Exchange students are welcome to join as support/associate members and gain access to the many services offered by Finanssi. Many activities to business students are organized by Finanssi. The activities include workshops, visits to interesting companies, and many different events. All members of Finanssi are warmly welcomed. One of Finassi’s most important tasks – if not the most important one – is to protect the interests of business students at the University of Oulu. Finanssi’s representatives work actively in the Faculty, in the Representative Council, committees and sections of the Student Union as well on the national level. Lobbying therefore covers local as well as national issues important to business students. Now I think is a good time to introduce myself: my name is Sonja Mehtälä and I’m the chairman of the Finanssi’s board. So if you have any questions come to the guild room and feel free to ask.

GUILD ROOM
The guild room of Finanssi, also known as ‘kiltis’ is found in the corridor of business school by following the logos of our guild (Finanssi). The guild room is located at the lowest floor of the university - in the catacombs. At the middle-point of Kauppakatu there exists a glass door, after which you will see stairs on your right side. After stepping the stairs down, turn right in the catacomb passage and after a few steps the guild room opens to your right. The guild room exists to promote the well-being of our students and all the business schools students are welcome, regardless of class. At the guild room you can, for example, hang out with friends, play Playstation or take power-naps in-between classes. At the guild room you will find students from every class and it pays off being courageous and starting a conversation with them, because they can usually give pretty sound advice for new students. The guild room acts as a good place for relaxation and networking for our members. Coffee and tea will be served daily!
After registering for membership (Finanssi) you are entitled to enjoy free coffee and tea for the duration of your studies. If you happen to have a serious coffee-addiction, then it is a great idea to bring your own mug to the guild room! Mugs can be stored in the closet of the kitchen, but you should wash you mug every now and then for hygienic reasons. We organize events in the guild room too every now and then. For example during the Valentine’s Day you may find a sweet surprise over there! You should not fear missing these, as our communications team will let you know through e-mail and Facebook. We warmly welcome you, hope we meet there during fall! HOX! Remember to take off your shoes at the door to the guild room. Thank you! Juha Veikkolainen Socio-political representative

AACSB-accreditation AACSB-accreditation is world-widely recognized, longest -standing mark of quality which institutions and their business programs can earn. Next Mikko Puhakka, the professor of economics, and Sauli Sohlo, the vice president of Martti Ahtisaari Institute, reveal the meaning behind accreditation from the viewpoints of our school and students. TEXT: MIKKO PUHAKKA & SAULI SOHLO
T
here exists approximately 17,000 business schools worldwide, of which 800 – from 53 different countries – have earned the most renowned and respected recognition of all, the AACSB International’s (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation (ks. www.aacsb.edu). For the number crunchers among you, that is just 5% of the schools. AACSB-accreditation is a recognition of the high quality of different functions within a business school. It is globally the most well-known and well-respected accreditation which comprises all the programs and activities. This is a major point of difference compared to the other,
18
program-specific, national and regional accreditations. To get the international AACSB-accreditation the business school has to pass a fundamental AACSB-standards -based peer review, in which the deans and professionals from business schools around the world review the management, education and research as well as other functions’ quality. In addition, the core of the review is formed from continuous improvement, interaction, available resources and co-operation with stakeholders. Critical part of the review is the competency, knowhow and capabilities of the personnel and students alike. What is also noteworthy is that the first time around a typical process takes from three to a whopping seven years.
AACSB-accreditation has, critically, at least two kinds of effects on all of our functions. It is equally about our activities’ continuous improvement according to the quality criteria developed jointly with the most renowned international business schools. On the other hand it is about securing and improving our status and reputation in an ever more international job market and in business schools international competition. We in Oulu can be proud of obtaining the AACSB-accreditation among the first four scandinavian business schools, part of which were the universities of Aalto, Århus and Copenhagen business schools. In addition we made it quite rapidly under three years. At the moment accreditation has also been achieved by Hanken. Scandinavian AACSB-schools club has grown into the total of eight. According to the principle of continuous improvement AACSB International has a system of five-year reviews. It looks like we are getting the review panel as our guests on fall 2018. To prepare this we review the education programs’ effectiviness, the quality of our research, the abilities of our personnel and we make this self-review report 2017-2018. For preparation we need the contribution of our students and especially of Finanssi ry’s -- let’s take care of this recognition being preserved for the next five years too!
”CRITICAL PART OF THE REVIEW S THE COMPETENCY, KNOW-HOW, AND CAPABILITIES OF THE PERSONNEL AND STUDENTS ALIKE.”
Mikko Puhakka is a professor of economics in the Oulu Business School of Oulu University. He has completed the degrees of economist and the bachelor of business administration in the Helsinki Business School. Puhakka has debated in the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA) with economics as his main subject in 1985. He has taught in the Helsinki Business School, in Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) and in the University of Lapland. Puhakka has also been the head of national Economics Advanced Training Program. He has also been a guest researcher in the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Pennsylvania and in the research department of Finnish National Bank. Puhakka has acted as the manager of Finnish Economic Assocation. At the moment he is a member of the Economical Policy’s review-panel as well as the vice president. He is a member of Finnish Science Academy.
