INTRODUCTION — European Festival of Creative Collaborations Hello! ~ and welcome to Manchester, UK for the first ever Crossover Festival. An event celebtrating collaborations bewteen 20 creative professionals from across Europe. This new festival, centred around the Cornerhouse venue in Manchester, is a new and important addition to the design calendar as we aim to let the creative potential of selected participants be fully realised through working with a fellow professional from a different creative field. The event is also aimed at promoting the importance of collaboration to our visitors by showing how working with people who have entirely different skill sets can enable you to push your ideas further and across applications that would not be possible working alone. Our selected creatives have been sourced from across Europe to take advantage of the contrasting approaches to work that exist between different countries.The results of the collaborations will be exhibited across the first week of July along with daily live events, talks and workshops that are open to anybody with a ticket. The events represnt a great opportunity to listen, talk to and work with a wide range of creative professionals working in disciplines as varied as audiovisual, graphic design, fashion, sculpture and many more.The Crossover Festival is aimed at being the first of many, which will continue annually, each time hosted by a different European city.This guide book gives you an introduction to the festival and a profile on all of the contributing artists and designers to give you an idea of what to expect. There is also a map and timetable of events to show you what is happening across the full week of the jam-packed festival so that you don’t miss a thing. So pick up your guide, find out whats happening and get involved. Listen, learn and be inspired by the creative minds you will meet over the week and see how you can collaborate successfully and produce work that you wouldn’t typically do.

For the innugural Crossover Festival, a wide selection of creative professionals have been specifically invited from all over Europe to meet in Manchester for a week of exciting creative events. The participants are viewed as great talents within their chosen fields but will collaborate here in Manchester with someone from an entirely different discipline with the view of producing works that they would not normally consider. Matthias Heiderich — Berlin, Germany Photography Matthias Heiderich is a young and self-taught photographer that is currently living and working in Berlin, Germany, where his images have already been exhibited widely. Following his studies in linguistics and phonetics, he completed a Master of Arts in Dublin 2007. The work on the page opposite is a selection taken from two of Heiderich’s series ‘Spektrum Eins’ and ‘Studie Drei’. He primarily focusses on shooting industrial architecture who’s forms are angular and geometric in their structure. The subject architecture he chooses is usually clad in vibrant colourways which are exentuated through unique and highly distinctive photographic techniques and are often set against a trademark aqua sky. His photographs being so vivid create scenes that look like they are extracted from a fair ground as the play so wonderfully with the basic shapes of the modernist architecture.
Levi van Veluw is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in his native country of the Netherlands. Although working with various techniques and across a number of materials, Van Veluw’s subject is primarily focussed on the human form from the shoulders up. Different emotions are absorbed into these forms through the application of sensual textures and surfaces characteristic of the materials he selects. Van Veluw´s photo series are self-portraits, drawn and photographed by himself: a one-man process. His works constitute elemental transfers; modifying the face as an object; combining it with other stylistic elements to create a third visual object of great visual impact.The delicate features of the portraits combined with the sensitive application of materials creates works that are deeply personal and gives the viewer an opportunity to gain insight into his mind as a creative person.

Atelier Olschinksy — Vienna, Austria Illustration Atelier Olschinsky, founded in 2002 is a small creative studio based in Vienna, Austria. Peter Olschinsky and Verena Weiss are operating in various fields such as graphic design, illustration, photography and art direction and have quickly built up a strong following due to their high impact, dynamic visuals. Whatever they turn their hand to is characterised by an extremem attention to minute detail and often shown in carefully gauged saturated colours. In addition to their jobs for clients they also run several independent projects and so were eager to accept an entry into the Crossover Festival. They state that they are always trying to develop and refine their work and these opportunities present a chance to cut loose and investigate a more experimental side to their professional practice. “It is just so important to work as much as you can, to learn and to be open to new things. The journey is the award.”
DUA is a studio created by Miriam Aust and Sebastian Amelung in Frankfurt, Germany. Their practice covers multiple disciplines including, industrial, product and interior design. Their most recent works involve what seems to be folded paper, but is made out of slewed concrete. “The property of concrete, to precisely display the surface of the utilized formwork, is taken to advantage. As well as wood shapes the facade of bare concrete buildings, in this case paper empathizes with this part. Although the manufacturing follows certain paper patterns, the completed shades develop individually through its own edges, kinks and creases”. This type of project is exemplery of their work. Something that changes the way we think about everyday structures and materials , whilst at the same time forming them into pieces that becomes valuable in their own right as they straddle multiple boundaries of creative practices.

Le Creative Sweatshop — Paris, France Art Direction A vivacious Parisian Collective, Le Creative Sweatshop is committed to originality and quality. Their hand-crafted work constitutes the identity of Le Creative Sweatshop. Most pieces are handmade which gives them a humble, precious and fragile stature. A dynamic, supple and reactive agency, Le Creative Sweatshop enjoys interacting with its huge network of partners. Through its collaborations and professional meetings, Le Creative Sweatshop expands its creative circle so that various influences and knowledge become a real strength and influence its practice on a daily basis. Le Creative Sweatshop is a highly conceptual studio at the crossroads of high fashion, contemporary art, design, and architecture. It was born from the star-aligned encounter of Julien Morin and Mathieu Missiaen in January of 2009 and ‘Sweatshop’ has developed its world around fixed and dynamic works of volume.
Gunilla Persson is a Swedish creative that focusses on fine art photography. Her work is emotive and delicate using nature to communicate certain feelings to the viewing audience. Her latest work entitled ‘mirrors’ is set amongst beautiful, natural Scandanavian landscapes, using mirrors to reflect segments of the surrounding environment in different directions. The result is one that essentially uses a simple visual trick that gives the impression that numerous images have been digitally interwoven but infact are a manual montage. In other works she uses subtle digital enhancements to alter the imagery which often results in a final work that appears to resemble a delicate watercolour painting. Its possible to observe a style that is synonomous with Scandanavia within Gunilla Persson’s projects; clean and minimal, incorporating cool colour palettes from the Alpine landscapes.

Svilen Gamalov — Varna, Bulgaria Furniture An emerging talent from Eastern Europe; Svilen Gamalov is a bold and ambitious furniture designer. The hand-crafted work constitutes the identity of his unique practice. Most pieces are handmade which gives them a humble, precious and fragile stature. A dynamic, supple and reactive agency, Svilen Gamalov enjoys interacting with its huge network of partners. Through its collaborations and professional meetings, Svilen Gamalov expands his creative circle so that various influences and knowledge become a real strength and influence its practice on a daily basis. Gamalov is a highly conceptual furniture designer at the crossroads of industrial, contemporary art, design, and of course furniture. It was born from his passion to improve public spaces and interaction in his native country of Bulgaria. Believing that his furniture can positively affect and shape the lives of regular people.

Rusian Khasanov — St. Petersburg, Russia Typography Rusian Khasanov is an experimental designer and typographer based in Russia. Using living organisms and bacteria allow him to create new takes on recognisable fonts through a process in which he is not entirely in control.
