It is important to note that Bayamon and Carolina are immediate suburbs of San Juan. It is a good idea to search all three when doing San Juan or the San Juan Metro Area. If you have no idea which Superior Court to search, don’t worry! Send us the city or cities the subject has resided in and we’ll do the rest! Also, do not forget to include the mother’s maiden name on all searches. It makes for a more efficient search. If you do not have the mother’s maiden the computer index acts in an uncivilized fashion and gives inaccurate results! Some results come back in Spanish. Court Records, Police Records, and Driving Records My first stop was to the DTOP (Departmento de Transportacion y Obras Publicas). While the DTOP office in San Juan is the central location for all motor vehicle needs it is very bureaucratic and has many people involved so getting straight answer is difficult. After going to many offices, I met the Manager of the records division. He explained that only the individual himself can obtain a copy of his driving record from the DTOP facility. Individuals can also access this information online through the DISCO system. He told me that the head of the Records Division for DTOP was located at a different location. I then proceeded to and met with the head of the Records Division. She was extremely nice and courteous. I explained the situation and my need to establish a system to obtain driving records from Puerto Rico while in the States. She was more than happy to assist, and the following system was established: All requests require the following; 1. A written authorization from the individual, I have included a sample which I drafted and which was approved by her 2. A cover letter requesting the information and explaining the reason for the request 3. The required stamps (payment) generally $1.50 Both she and I established that requests could be faxed, emailed or mailed in with the revenue stamps and a prepaid return envelope. The results could be picked up by an individual at the office or mailed in the return envelope. I stopped by police headquarters in San Juan and spoke with an officer. Local police stations are not all connected with each other. But the central police are connected to each local station and gather all data so that the central police have all records in their system. I went to the Superior Court building in San Juan. This is the central/main court to pull a record on a case. I met with a clerk and she was more than helpful. She searched the name of the individual and gave me the result. I also went to the Carolina Superior Court and the Carolina Police Station. At the Carolina Court I was able to get records pulled and searches done for that location only. They said they are not hooked up to a central system but I think they just did not want to search any more. We did however get the court file for a case we wanted. At the Carolina police station Officer Bonnila was able to search a name and pull up a mug shot for us.

You can have a problem if you lack providing the mother's maiden name with your Puerto Rico search.

Provide the maiden name and your hit ratio climbs dramatically.

An example would be Carlos Torres for a search in San Juan. No record found.

Include the mother’s maiden name and voila!

There are two types of criminal record searches in Puerto Rico. First, there is the Commonwealth–wide Police Search. The name is submitted to the Police and a certificate is returned with a No Record or Record Found status. In the case of a Record Found on the search, the police do not provide the disposition. The second search type is the Court Search. Puerto Rico has Superior and District Courts. This search is of a particular jurisdiction and its two courts . The value of this search is that some District cases do not appear on the Police Search while we do pick them up in a court search. Turnaround Times vary.

A court search can be cleared in one day if there is no record. A police search can take about three days. For either search a Record Found could cause delays, Our staff will notify you if any search is delayed.
