The Background Investigator Goes To Hong Kong In a continuing series, The Background Investigator, is sending its attorneys to various countries around the world to explore the justice systems and bring back to you their findings. This month Faheem Ebrahim visited Hong Kong. Here is his report: Hong Kong Criminal Checks Revealed! by Faheem Ebrahim There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not criminal background checks can be obtained in Hong Kong. I thought I’d take a look for myself and see first-hand if it could be done. I arrived at the Wanchai district court on 21 Harbour Road, and took the lift to the 6th floor where I entered the Registrars’ office. I approached a clerk who introduced me to a supervisor. After explaining my needs of doing a criminal background search from their system, and explaining the reason for needing this information, the supervisor then took the name, date of birth and HK ID number of the subject to be searched, and let me know the result. If anyone tells you that searches in Hong Kong cannot be done, I urge you to check again. It’s an accommodating, open system, and with the right explanation of your intentions, the team at the district court will happily assist with your needs.
