Aqua Dragons are real live aquatic creatures that you can hatch and grow at home. Their scientific name is Artemia Salinas, and they have been living in the sea and salty lakes for millions of years; right back to the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth! From the crustacea family, Aqua Dragons look like tiny three eyed, long tailed, hairy headed dragons that grow up to 2cm long. Their eggs have an amazing capacity called cryptobiosis which means they can dry out and stay alive only to hatch many years later. Tests have found that eggs kept in air sealed containers for up to 20 years still hatched when they were returned to water. Pack of 3 tank sets included.

G Ferrofluid, 10mL The amazing Ferrofluid is a truly magnetic liquid that consists of micron size magnetic particles (magnetite) in a mineral oil. Particles are coated in a surfactant which prevents them clumping together. When a magnet is in close proximity the magnetic particles in the Ferrofluid take up the shape of the magnetic field – a 3D version of the classic iron filings on a piece of paper experiment. The apparent density of ferrofluid can be changed by applying a magnetic field, e.g. place a one pence piece in a shallow dish (5mm) of ferrofluid and it will sink. Bring a powerful magnet underneath and the coin will float! Supplied in a plastic jar containing 10mL of Ferrofluid. A rare earth magnet is also supplied.

G A Electric Motor Kit

D Crocodile Lead Set

A kit of components and materials that will allow a pupil to build a simple but effective two pole d.c. motor that will run well on voltages as low as 1.5V. This kit is designed to overcome the difficulties of obtaining a good electrical contact with the commutator, with minimum friction, in the brush system. This kit dispenses with the need to construct “permanent” brushes. Instead, the bared ends of two lengths of stranded flexible wire are simply held at either side of the commutator so that they apply gentle pressure under the control of the operator. The ceramic magnets supplied are marked for polarity so that Fleming’s rule may be investigated. All materials are provided and a set of teacher’s notes is included.

These mini data loggers, designed by Mindsets, are an indispensable tool for all manner of investigations and experiments. All the loggers come in the form of a USB stick, so no cables are required to retrieve data or configure the device. The sensor, memory and battery are all encapsulated on a single circuit so no additional hardware is required (battery life is estimated at 2 to 3 years and is replaceable). Sample rates can be set between once per second and once every hour, meaning the sample memory can store from 2 hours to almost a year of data! May be used indoors or outside, or even in a liquid if protected in a self-seal bag or container. Each mini data logger comes with FREE software. The process is as follows: 1. Insert the data logger into the computer and launch the software to configure the data logger - i.e. set the frequency of the readings. 2. Remove the data logger from the computer and place it where readings are required. Readings are recorded automatically at the frequency set during configuration. 3. Insert the data logger into the computer to download the data when required.

C Periodic Table Cards The front of each card shows a beautiful photograph of the element, while the back includes detailed scientific information and a description of the sample shown on the front. Laid out together the cards form a periodic table over 7.5 feet (2.3m) wide. Unique graphical representations of the melting point, boiling point, density and electron configuration allow you to create plots of these for properties for all the elements simply by sliding the deck to one side or another. For example, you can easily find the element with the highest density, or the lowest boiling point, by sliding the deck left or right. These cards are perfect for classroom use. Each student can be given a card or group of cards to learn about, or notions of chemical affinity can be explored by trying out different arrangements of the periodic table.

D Periodic Table Chart This poster is a totally original collection that features gorgeous, never-before-seen photographic representations of the 118 elements in the periodic table - plus facts, figures and fascinating stories about each one! The elements are what we, and everything around us, are made of. But how many elements have you seen in their pure, raw, uncombined form? This poster provides that rare opportunity. Based on five years of research and photography, the pictures presented on this poster make up the most complete and visually arresting representation available to the naked eye of every atom in the universe. The large version of this poster comes as a double sided poster showing the elements in traditional picture form on one side and then in a data form on the reverse side. 20” x 40” (50 x 100cm).

A E-Textiles Kit (Electro Fashion) Introduce lighting effects to textile designs with this kit and demonstrate electricity in a fun and creative way. Soldering is not required, instead conductive thread is used to connect the battery and LEDs. Each kit includes 2m of conductive thread (which is a thread that can be used like cotton thread but conducts electricity like a wire), our own custom designed Sewable Coin Cell Holder, one coin 3V cell battery, and two ultra slim, pre-mounted, easy sew E-Textile LEDs. Please note: that this product is not washable/dry cleanable and can be used on textile applications which are ornamental and not intended to be washed/dry cleaned or alternatively use on removable textile appliques for garments/soft furnishings/fashion accessories.

C Electro Fashion Conductive Thread

These ultra slim, pre-mounted E-textile LEDs from ElectroFashion run off a 3V coin cell battery and are illuminated continuously when powered. They have connections to which the conductive thread can be connected. These are clearly marked with ‘+’ and ‘-’ to indicate which is the positive and which is the negative connection. The PCBs are double sided making the conductive thread connection very reliable. Contents: 5 x Individual LEDs (ready to use). 1 x White, 1 x Blue, 1 x Red, 1 x Green, 1 x Sakuru (Lilac). Dimensions: L15 x W6.5 x H2.7mm.

HC1352568

pack 5 £3.99

Conductive thread can be used like conventional sewing thread, however it electrically conducts allowing electronics to be integrated into textiles. This makes it ideal for use in a range of E-textile applications. The thread is nano plated with silver to make it conductive. The conductive thread has a low resistance of approximately 40 Ohms per metre. This allows LEDs to be powered over quite large distances. Resistance does not vary significantly from one length of thread to the next, so you should be able to use this thread without concern for “dead” sections. 2 metres. each £1.79

HC1346488

D Electro Fashion Sewable Push

Switch This sewable push switch from Kitronik can be used to activate your E-textiles project whilst it is pressed down (the circuit is broken as soon as pressure on the switch is released). It has two connection points to which the conductive thread is connected. The PCBs are double sided making the conductive thread connection very reliable. each £1.08

SCIENCE • TRANSITION TO SECONDARY Innovation

A

Laika: Raspberry Pi Robotics Interface Laika takes Raspberry Pi to the next level. Together, Raspberry Pi and the Explorer2 enable you to quickly and easily create amazing projects without feeling overcome with circuit diagrams and tricky electronics. All Laika products are robust and are designed to industrial standards giving you the freedom to experiment and gain the confidence you need to make teaching or learning computing and robotics easy. You can begin with the Laika Explorer2 which comes with everything you need to start. It plugs into your Raspberry Pi and allows you to control motors, switches, lamps, relays, solenoids and much more, all through programming in Scratch or Python. All Laika projects come with comprehensive teaching materials guiding you through each step from switching on for the first time through to having a complete system running, reading inputs and controlling outputs. Laika is the easiest way to teach the principles of robotics and hardware control through software programming. Students can control motors through scratch or python with simple coding, but allows more complex problem solving as their knowledge grows.

A Laika Explorer2 Laika is a sensational system merging the worlds of computing and science. Take an Explorer2 and a Raspberry Pi or a Windows PC, and together you can automate and control your science experiments live in the classroom. Supplied with an SD card for the Raspberry Pi with all software installed and ready to go, with easy to follow, lesson based examples and tutorials you will be amazed at what you can achieve with Laika. Once set up by plugging the Explorer2 directly into a Raspberry Pi or PC via USB, you can write refreshingly simple code to control all the features Laika has to offer. Build a realistic wind turbine to harness power out of thin air. Wind is one of the most promising sources of clean, renewable energy available today. Wind energy has been used for centuries to pump water and crush grain in windmills, and is increasingly being used to generate electricity to power our modern world. Assemble a wind turbine complete with electric generator and adjustable rotor blades. The blades are designed with complex aerodynamic curves to look and work like modern day wind turbine blades. Conduct experiments with your wind turbine, including experiments to optimise its performance by adjusting the angle of the blades. Use the wind turbine to light up an LED and charge a rechargeable battery. Convert the wind turbine into an electric fan by using the electric generator as a motor. Build three additional models with the parts included. During the experiments, you will learn the physics of force and motion as it applies to wind power technology. Learn how to measure and calculate the different forces acting on the rotor blades by breaking them down into vectors. Discover how the sun makes the wind, providing us with an endless source of energy. Read about different types of wind turbines and windmills, and how wind energy can be used to power homes and electric cars.

B Hydropower Hydropower has been used for hundreds of years in watermills and is now commonly used to generate electricity in applications such as hydroelectric dams and tidal power plants. Explore the power of water by building models and conducting experiments with them. Learn about how different devices are used to extract useful energy from moving water — from a waterwheel in a small stream to a giant turbine in a tidal power station. Build a waterwheel, a sawmill, and a hammer mill to harness the energy of moving water to do different types of physical work. Investigate the intriguing properties of water by performing experiments involving surface tension, adhesion, and cohesion. Learn about water pressure by building a water tower, communicating vessels, and a water fountain. Construct a hydroelectric power station to generate

electricity and light an LED. Learn about where the energy in ocean waves, tides, and rivers comes from, and discover how we can generate electricity from them.
