TEACHING SUPPORT Target Ladders This powerful series of practical books fully supports the SENCo and class teacher in implementing the 2014 SEND Code of Practice in order to close the gap between children with SEN and their peers. The Target Ladders books provide an overview of the range of difficulties experienced by children with a particular SEN, enabling the busy teacher to get a better understanding of the child’s learning priorities. Photocopiable materials include checklists to help you identify children who may be in need of extra help, and templates for records of progress and monitoring sheets. Target Ladders focus on what a child can do, rather than what they cannot do, in order to identify next steps, presenting ‘small steps’ targets for children and suggested strategies for achieving these targets. They provide the structure and flexibility to recognise that every child is different and will follow their own pathway through the targets.’ Series Editor - Kate Ruttle is a Lead Practitioner for Inclusion and a SENCo and deputy head in a primary school in Suffolk. Kate delivers training courses in the UK and internationally and is a widely respected literacy consultant. How to Identify and Overcome Handwriting Difficulties Lois Addy Handwriting is a complex perceptual and motor skill which does not always develop spontaneously but requires careful guidance and practice. Despite advances in technology, handwriting remains an important means of helping children compose and structure their ideas. Difficulties in this area can have an adverse effect on all aspects of the child’s learning and self-esteem. The book gives teachers and SENCos, for children at Key Stages 1 to 3, an understanding of how pupils’ handwriting skills develop and what to do when pupils struggle to produce legible handwriting. It provides practical strategies to alleviate difficulties such as poor grip, posture, pressure through the writing medium, letter formation and orientation, alignment on the page, spacing, sizing, fluency and speed. It will also suggest when to use technology as a form of written communication. Contains 128 A4 pages.

Secondary education demands that young people are organised, selfsufficient, autonomous learners, who can cope with a range of teachers, a diverse timetable and multiple buildings. However, many young people have motor co-ordination and perceptual difficulties which affect their participation in class activities. This condition was previously termed ‘dyspraxia’ but is now more universally referred to as ‘developmental co-ordination disorder’ or DCD. For these pupils, poor handwriting, erratic organisation and difficulties with reading, mathematics and physical education may have been noted at primary school with their associated detrimental effect on academic success, peer relationships, social skills and self-confidence. These issues are felt more keenly in secondary school due to the desire to ‘fit in’ and be accepted by a larger and often unforgiving peer group. This book provides an insight into how DCD can affect students at Key Stage 3 & 4, and provides practical strategies. • understand the unique needs of young people with DCD • understand why young people with DCD have difficulties in perceptual and motor planning • appreciate the impact of DCD on learning • consider the added influence of peer-pressure and puberty on DCD • consider post-16 and vocational training. It is also intended to help parents/carers of young people with DCD to understand the potential help available to their child as they transition into secondary education. Contains 64 A4 pages.

Lois Addy Do you like thrill of rollercoasters or spinning roundabouts•Do you feel grumpy when you are trying to concentrate and someone is eating an apple nearby•Do you find woolly jumpers itchy and irritating•If so, you are reacting to a sensory experience. Sensory processing describes the way we receive and interpret the incoming stimuli from our 7 sensory systems. The integration of these systems helps us to maintain our positional sense and be attentive to our surroundings. This interactive system requires a sense of balance and so our body naturally craves this. This book has been written to describe some of the sensory responses which are more overt and may be affecting a pupil’s ability to learn. It examines sensory responses or behaviours which look unusual or inappropriate out of context, and explains these in the context of a fluctuating sensory system. It provides strategies; resources, and interventions to help teachers and parents reduce the impact of these on the child or young person’s ability to learn. Contains 132 A4 pages.

LITERACY & DYSLEXIA ACE Spelling Dictionary David Moseley Pupils with spelling difficulties often experience problems accessing the curriculum and BEST SELLER lose confidence with writing. The ACE Spelling Dictionary breaks through these problems, taking away the frustration of hunting through a conventional dictionary and actually improving users’ spellings through increasing their understanding of common spelling patterns and unusual features. The Dictionary is designed for writers of all ages who need to check spellings, and is intended for use in educational settings and at home. The fourth edition of the ACE Spelling Dictionary has expanded user’s notes and thousands of new words, including more alternative spellings, plural forms and ‘sound-alike’ pairs and groups than before. Using the unique ACE Spelling Index, users need only think about how a word sounds to find out how to spell it. By simply identifying the first vowel sound, the speller is directed to the page where the problem word is found. The easy-to-use reference system will tempt users to use more interesting words in their writing. Both spelling patterns and irregularities are highlighted in the dictionary so that pupils learn to spell incidentally. Contains 328 pages. 176 x 250mm.

Advanced ACE Spelling Pocket Dictionary
ACE Spelling Activities
David Moseley
David Moseley & Gwyn Singleton
The Advanced ACE Spelling Dictionary is designed for everyone who needs to check spellings quickly, no matter how skilled they are. As a companion volume to the ACE Spelling Dictionary, it retains all the assets of the standard Dictionary, along with some added extras. The Advanced ACE Spelling Dictionary is smaller and more transportable than the standard Dictionary, easy to carry from lesson to lesson, making for a more compact and subtle reference guide for older users. This pocket-sized dictionary links vowel sounds with colours. The vocabulary is extensive and up-to-date, and this second edition has over 600 new words added, many of them to extend word ‘families’. A colour distinction is made between high-frequency core vocabulary and lower-frequency, more specialised vocabulary up to degree level. Using the unique ACE Spelling Index, users need only think about how a word sounds to find out how to spell it. By simply identifying the first vowel sound, the speller is directed to the page where the problem word is found. As with the ACE Spelling Dictionary, both spelling patterns and irregularities are highlighted so that users learn to spell incidentally. The Dictionary is ideal for first- and second-language users as the unique ACE Index takes you directly from speech to spelling. Contains 578 pages. 114 x 162mm.
ACE Spelling Activities is designed to be used with the ACE Spelling Dictionary. It provides a framework for all learners to get to grips with phonics and the English spelling system. With over 100 photocopiable activities for individual, pair, group and whole-class work, this revised second edition of the ACE Spelling Activities fully covers the statutory spelling lists for the National Curriculum for English for KS2. Activities cover tricky word endings, spellings for sounds, searching for patterns and more. A new Slippery Characters section focuses on 240 frequently misspelt words between 5 and 13 letters in length, providing the opportunity to correct misspellings that could otherwise persist for a lifetime. The resource also includes sections on how to teach and practise spellings. Contains 150 photocopiable pages. 297 x 210mm.

£17.95
Liz Baldwin Spoken language breaks down in to sentences, phrases, words and individual sounds (phonemes), and phonics is the building block on which all spoken and written language is based. This book is all about sounds in words. Written mainly for parents and carers, it’s a fun, useful way of helping children to develop their skills with phonics. By doing this, parents will be supporting their child in developing speech sounds, their spoken and written language, and their spelling. The games are presented in three sections according to where they might be played. Within each section there are syllable games, games for individual sounds within words and rhyming games. The syllable games will be much easier than the other sets of games, so it is best to start with some of these. All games require very little if any equipment - just keen eyes and everyday items! All the games can be played with one child and one adult. They can equally be expanded to include brothers and sisters, friends, grandparents etc. Words are all around us... so go out there and have some fun with phonics! Size: 246 x 168mm portrait. 112 pages.

This book is a companion to Liz Baldwin’s earlier book with LDA, I Hear with my Little Ear, which was a collection of 102 phonic games. I Hear with my Little Ear 2 is a collection of 102 language games designed to help with aspects of language acquisition and use. The book is divided into four sections focusing on listening skills, language structures, vocabulary development and use of language. Each section provides games addressing different aspects of the communication process. The games are designed to be played in groups. Most are written for use as a whole class, but all are equally applicable to small groups. The games are intended for use by anyone with an interest in extending children’s language development. They are suitable for children from the age of 3 to 11. Most of the games need very few resources and no preparation. Every game has ideas to make the activity easier for those children who are at the start of being able to understand and use the language target. LITERACY & SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL HEALTH
The Kaos World Chronicles series INTRODUCTION The Kaos World Chronicles is a comprehensive literacy scheme aimed at KS3–4 students. It is structured around a series of high-interest, low-reading-age short stories designed specifically to appeal to older students who are struggling with reading, including those with social, emotional and mental health difficulties. The readers develop in complexity and should be read in sequence. The first ten readers come in standard (pink) and easier (blue) versions to allow differentiation within the classroom, meaning that more students can access whole-group work. The stories are set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic world where society has broken down and follow two main characters, Travis and Spanna, as they battle to survive in a dangerous, unpredictable world. The stories develop in complexity and cover a range of cross-curricular areas. They also deal with contemporary and age-relevant issues such as violence, bullying, gang-membership, risk-taking and love. All readers feature atmospheric and gritty illustrations throughout to engage students. Each story contains a list of tricky words at the back to help students develop fluency, and the number of words are highlighted on each page to promote enjoyment of reading (particularly with competitive boys!). The photocopiable teacher’s books contain worksheets, monitor and objective sheets, records of progress, target sheets and certificates to motivate and reward students. Each one comes with an accompanying CD-ROM which provides electronic versions of these sheets. The readers cater for teenage students with the following reading ages (based on the Flesch-Kincaid Reading Level): Readers 1–5 easier: RA 5.5–6.2 years. Readers 1–5 standard: RA 6–7.2 years. Readers 6–10 easier: RA 7.3–7.8 years. Readers 6–10 standard: RA 7.5–8.3 years. Readers 11–15: RA 8–9.5 years.
About the author Lucas Wellington is Deputy Head and Head of English at a school in Bristol for secondary students with Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties. In just eight weekly sessions, Speed Up! provides a multi-sensory course of help for any child aged 8-13 whose handwriting is illegible, slow or lacking in fluency. Poor handwriting hinders many children’s progress - right across the curriculum. Unfortunately, most handwriting schemes do little to help children who are struggling with this vital skill. Here, at last, is a new and highly effective approach. Developed by a leading paediatric occupational therapist and designed specifically for older children struggling with handwriting, Speed Up! gets to the root of writing difficulties by developing kinaesthetic awareness through multi-sensory activity and exercise. The programme includes: • a baseline assessment • clear, fully illustrated, photocopiable instruction sheets • an overview of the theory behind the practice • advice on identifying underlying causes of difficulty and how to tackle them. The sessions may be delivered by a teacher, teaching assistant, classroom assistant or therapist. The emphasis throughout is on enjoyment, building selfesteem and developing writing confidence. MOTOR SKILLS Write from the Start Lois Addy & Ion Teodorescu The ability to produce fluent, legible handwriting has been given an increased focus, and affects attainment in many areas. If a child struggles to master this vital skill the implications can be serious. However, the process of handwriting involves the complex co-ordination of motor, perceptual and cognitive skills which do not always develop spontaneously but which require considerable explanation, demonstration, experimentation and practice. The Write from the Start programme offers a different and effective approach that will guide children through the various stages of perceptual and fine-motor development to lay the foundations for flowing, accurate handwriting. The programme contains over 400 graded activities that develop the intrinsic muscles of the hand so that children gain the necessary control to form letter shapes and create appropriate spaces between words, alongside the following perceptual skills required to orientate letters and organise the page: • hand–eye co-ordination • form constancy • spatial organisation • figure-ground discrimination • orientation • laterality This cumulative programme is structured into 8 sections. Age Suitability: mainstream children aged 4–6 or older children with DCD/additional learning needs. Contains: Workbook 1 (120 A4 pages), Workbook 2 (136 A4 pages) and a Teacher’s Handbook (20 A4 pages).
