Posted: 8/5/2014 by teacher I'm sorry you had a bad experience. Let me try to help. There are several opportunities RHS provides for students and parents. I'll name a few for the sake of space. During the freshman Research class students are given resources using Career Information Systems (College, Career, Scholarship information). The Counselors teach students how to access this information and provide an opportunity for students to explore.. College Admissions Advisors from different colleges are scheduled regularly to meet with students during lunch. Counselors conduct conferences with each student individually during junior and senior year to provide individual advisement (college planning). Counselors write letters of recommendation, verify electronic application data and help students navigate the admission process. Evening programs are offered such as Financial Aid Night and College Planning Night. The bulk of college admissions lies mostly on the student. Student GPA, difficulty of course selection, ACT/SAT scores, involvement in school and community activities, letters of recommendation are key. RHS will provide rigorous course selection and preparation. I hope this is helpful. Rating: 5
Posted: 7/31/2014 by parent We have had very good luck with both counselors. We had a foreign exchange student who was struggling and her counselor was compassionate and called to keep us informed of a few issues she was having. My daughter has attended Renaissance for a year and the counselors came into her class several times during the year to give information and we have attended several afterschool information nights. We get newsletters about once a month and my daughter met with her counselor afterschool a few times this year to get help with questions about college applications and the IB program. I have been impressed. I know strong grades, choosing challenging classes and high SAT and/or ACT scores determine what colleges our daughter can get into. Also, doing your homework to determine which college is best. The class choices are limited. If you have a child willing to work hard I bet you will have a great experience. Rating: 3
Posted: 6/22/2014 by parent We don't know much yet. Our daughter is just starting this coming fall. I'm not very pleased with the counselor though. When asked what they did to help their students get into colleges, we were told to visit other high school's websites as they didn't have time to do this. I would have figured this ranked pretty high on a counselor's to-do list. If anyone has any feedback, I'd love to hear it. I've ranked the school as 3 stars as my only dealings have been with the counselor.
