> Estate Agent swims the English Channel for charity

Harry Middleton, Partner at Fine & Country Chiswick, took on the challenge of swimming across the English Channel recently, raising funds for two charitable organisations close to his heart: Make-A-Wish and The Fine & Country Foundation.

An avid endurance athlete with a history in competitive swimming, Middleton completed the dangerous solo crossing on Sunday 18th June 2023 in a time of 12 hours and 46 minutes. During the crossing he was followed by a boat and spurred on by his training partner and coach Bradley Harvey, along with his dad Stewart Middleton, who is yet to miss a swimming event in support of his son.

Middleton started swimming in lakes during lockdown prior to pools reopening and wanted to take on one of the hardest swimming challenges in the world. “Everyone knows the English Channel and it is deemed as one of the busiest straits in the world, but only a small number of people have finished the swim. More people have climbed Mount Everest than swum the channel,” says Middleton.

He completed the challenge to support the work done by Make-A-Wish and The Fine & Country Foundation. By swimming the English Channel, he hopes to generate awareness and inspire generosity among individuals and businesses. Supporters can contribute to the fundraising campaign through an online donation portal, available on givewheel.com

> South African Rugby Legends tour Portugal

On Saturday 17th June, the South African Rugby Legends were at the Jamor Rugby Field near Lisbon for the final day of their Cascais and Lisbon Tour. Fine & Country Portugal was the proud sponsor of the tour, which saw the South African Legends and Portugal Barbarians battle it out on the field in an exhibition match for the Mandela Cup.

The South African Legends team included players from South Africa’s three World Cup-winning teams in 1995, 2007 and 2019. The squad consisted of 24 Springboks, five Springbok captains, nine World Cup winners and two rugby centurions. Some of the great names involved in the event included the likes of John Smit, Schalk Brits, Percy Montgomery, Butch James, Pat Lambie, Joel Stransky, Gary Teichmann, Gonçalo and Vasco Uva, Pedro Leal, Gonçalo Foro, João Correia, Toby Flood and Sam Tuitupou, among others.

The match was a fantastic opportunity for Portuguese rugby fans to watch World Cup champions play on home soil and to get behind their local rugby heroes.

> Fine & Country Foundation selects 28 charities to receive grants

The Fine & Country Foundation selected 28 charities, with 27 based in the UK and one in South Africa, to receive a total of £45,488 in grants in its Spring Grant scheme.

The Grant scheme is designed to support non-profit organisations and charities that focus on combatting homelessness and poverty. Fine & Country offices are encouraged to submit applications nominating a charity of their choice to receive a donation of up to £3,000. These proposals are then reviewed by The Foundation Board and successful projects are awarded the grants.

Jon Cooke, Trustee of The Fine & Country Foundation, said: “Many organisations have been impacted by the cost-of-living crisis and require financial assistance to continue doing the work they do within their communities. We hope that the grants that have been awarded will make a positive impact and will help support these organisations on their vital missions. The fundraising efforts of the network and donations we have received have made it possible for The Foundation to be able to support so many amazing charities and non-profit organisations through the grant scheme over the years.”

The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s top tourism destinations for good reasons. Here are just some of them.

Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay is generally considered to be the start of the Garden Route. Mossel Bay has a significant history and there are a number of historic houses worth a visit, including about 200 stone homes built a century ago by Cornish stonemasons.

The best reason to visit, though, is perhaps the St. Blaize trail, a 13.5-kilometre hike that follows a contour path along a cliff in Mossel Bay towards the Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse. The entire walk takes around 6 hours to complete from start to finish and is one of the most spectacular ways to take in the scenery.

Although you can walk the trail in either direction, most hikers start at the cave below the lighthouse and walk toward Dana Bay. Expect incredible ocean views and there’s also the potential for whale sightings.

Botlierskop Private Game Reserve

You can’t visit South Africa and not go on safari – even if it’s not your main purpose for being here. The Garden Route is no exception. Botlierskop Private Game Reserve is just 4.5 hours’ drive from Cape Town, midway between Mossel Bay and George. Situated between the magnificent Outeniqua Mountains and the unspoiled Indian Ocean beaches in the heart of the Garden Route, Botlierskop’s 4,200-hectare reserve is not short of spectacular views. There are plenty of accommodation options, too, from sumptuous tented lodges and stately manor suites to selfcatering villas and an entire village built with children in mind, but it’s also possible to just visit for the day.

The privately operated game reserve is home to four of the Big 5 (lions, elephants, buffalo and rhinos) as well as cheetahs and a host of antelope, including rare black impala, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, hippos and more. You’re likely to spot most of these on a game drive. Alternatively, you can take a horseback safari or guided bush walk. If you book any of these activities, you also get access to the leisure area with pools for all ages. For those who need more of an escape, duck into Fijnebos Spa and book a treatment. You won’t regret it.

Knysna Forests

The Knysna Forests – the country’s largest forest complex – cover about 568 square kilometres. Walk or drive through the indigenous forest and you’ll see about 50 different species of indigenous trees: from giant yellowwoods to the iconic stinkwood, which produces one of the most sought-after timbers from the Southern Cape, and from hard pear to wild fig, cape chestnut to cape ash, and candlewood to white milkwood.

If you want to learn more about the forests, take a guided walk with Garden Route Trail, which offers a range of walks, mountain biking and birding in the Garden Route. Routes vary from family-friendly short walks to multi-day hikes. If you’re really ambitious, sign up for the Garden Route Coastal Meander, described as a five-day Slackpacking eco-adventure. What’s slackpacking? It’s the gentle version of backpacking, where you do the hiking without the hefting, and stay in chalets and rondavels en route. This adventure runs between Wilderness and Brenton on Sea, includes two canoe stages and passes through two nature reserves.

Knysna Elephant Park

At Knysna Elephant Park, animal lovers can enjoy a rare wildlife experience with a herd of rehabilitated elephants. Under the careful supervision of experienced

handlers, visitors can walk with the elephants, feed them and interact with these majestic pachyderms.

Operating for more than 20 years, the park was the first sanctuary in South Africa to accommodate orphaned African elephants. Many of the residents were rescued from culls or circuses. The experience begins with an educational presentation and safety briefing before visitors interact with the elephants at the level they choose, as long as the elephants are happy to cooperate.

Wilderness National Park

Wilderness National Park, nestled between the bustling towns of George and Knysna, is a lush series of rivers, lakes and estuaries, set against a backdrop of mountains. There’s plenty to do here, from spotting dolphins and whales from Dolphin Point, to hiring a canoe or bicycle, go abseiling, paragliding, boating, fishing or hiking.

Eden Adventures is a good place to start, with a Swart River Waterfall abseiling experience. After a brief hike into the serene Kaaimans Gorge, you have the opportunity to do two 45-metre abseils right next to a magnificent waterfall, landing in a canoe at the bottom.

Plettenberg Bay

Plettenberg Bay is a seaside resort town that encompasses sandy Central Beach and Lookout Beach, both of which

have surf breaks, Robberg Nature Reserve and the Stone Age Nelson Bay Caves. One of the best reasons to come here, though, is the fur seal colony that frolics off the coast.

Offshore Adventures takes groups out in a fast boat to zip around the coast and drop into the water with the playful fur seals. They are incredibly curious creatures, happy to interact as long as you’re comfortable in the water. They’ll duck and dive around you and seemingly wave with a fin as you swim away.

Tsitsikamma National Park

A highlight of the magnificent coastal reserve Tsitsikamma National Park is the Storms River suspension bridge. Stretching for 77 metres, the bridge spans the swirling waters of the river mouth as they merge with the Indian Ocean. Standing on the bridge, less than seven metres above the water, you can feel the exhilarating force of nature. The hike to the bridge is also lovely. The trail winds through forests, past waterfalls and stunning sea views.

Not far from Storms River is the Big Tree, a gigantic yellowwood tree said to be 800 years old, making it South Africa’s oldest, as well as its largest, tree.

The Tsitsikamma National Park is a great spot to finish on a high – literally. Here, Stormsriver provides Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours, along with a broad selection of nature-based activities.

The Canopy Tour is a zip-line adventure 30 metres above the forest floor, cable sliding from ten platforms, tree to tree, while discovering the spectacular and unique wilderness of the Tsitsikamma indigenous forest. All groups are escorted through the forest canopy by a lead guide and a follow guide to ensure safety as you glide from tree to tree. The platforms built high up in the giant Outeniqua Yellowwoods provide spectacular views of the forest and a fitting finale for a Garden Route adventure. n
