Quiet times in the Algarve
The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its beautiful coastline, golden beaches and vibrant summer scene. Michaela Black explores in the off-season.
Clockwise from top left: Beautiful view of mountainous Monchique; a picturesque tiled street in the historic old town of Lagos; aerial view of the Tavira Island beach; surfboards at Praia do Amado
Cliff-backed beaches, mouthwatering seafood and picturesque villages make the Algarve in southern Portugal a popular summer destination. But when the weather cools and the bustling summer crowds disperse, it transforms into a peaceful escape. Here are five cool-weather destinations to take in the tranquillity.
1. Sagres: the edge of Europe Sagres sits on the western tip of the Algarve and is known for its windswept cliffs and dramatic seascapes. It has the unique status of being the most southwesterly place on the European mainland.
The town is well known as a summer destination, but even in the depths of winter Sagres experiences mild and pleasant weather, meaning the beaches are never offlimits. Temperatures rarely dip below 15 degrees Celsius, with plenty of sunny days. This is the prime surf season, with consistent swells and excellent wave conditions, so if you’re keen to catch a wave, pack your wetsuit.
For those less inclined to venture into the sea, there are plenty of places to admire the area on dry land. Costa Vicentina National Park, which surrounds the village, is a good place to start. In the cooler months the occasional rain showers invigorate the landscape, resulting in lush greenery and blooming flowers. There are numerous hiking trails and coastal walks on offer here and birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety of migratory birds that flock to the region, making it an ideal time for wildlife observation and photography.
The Cape of St. Vincent (Cabo de Sao Vicente) is one of the most-visited sights in the area. The cape consists of steep cliffs, punctuated by occasional coves with sandy beaches, such as Praia do Tonel and Praia do Beliche. Often
called the ‘end of the world’, the views from the cape are nothing short of stunning – and you can’t visit without photographing the lighthouse tucked into the cliffs as it guides ships safely along the treacherous coastline.
Sagres Fortress, perched on a promontory further around the coast, is also worth visiting. This testament to Portugal’s seafaring past was originally built in the 15th century under the command of Infante Dom Henry the Navigator to protect the area from attacks coming from Northern Africa. It was from here that Henry the Navigator charted expeditions around the coasts of Western Africa, initiating the Portuguese Age of Discoveries.
2. Lagos: history and coastal beauty
Further along the coast, the small city of Lagos is steeped in history – it is over 2,000 years old. The historic old town is a maze of cobblestone streets, lined with quaint shops, restaurants and significant landmarks, such as the Church of Saint Anthony, which features a stunning Baroque interior.
The ancient city walls are worth following as they tell the story of Lagos’ strategic importance during the Age of Discoveries. The Castelo di Lagos and the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira (the waterfront fortress) were also key parts of Lagos’ defence.
Lagos is surrounded by natural beauty – particularly Ponta da Piedade, a short distance from the city centre. There is a walking trail from just outside the city to the point. Much like Cabo Sao Vicente, Ponta da Piedade offers breathtaking views of rugged limestone cliffs that plunge into the turquoise sea. The rock formations, arches and sea caves can be explored by boat or kayak, but the hiking trails along the cliffs provide equally
Above: Dramatic view of the Sagres Fortress
spectacular vistas. The cooler months make these trails more accessible and enjoyable and you’ll be awed by towering sea cliffs, caves and rock formations, crashing waves, tiny hidden beaches and sweeping vistas that make you feel like a true explorer.
3. Silves: a journey into the past Moving inland, Silves, the former capital of the Algarve during the Moorish period, is a town where history comes alive. It is a mere 35-minute drive from Lagos, so could be visited on a day trip, or a longer stay.
Dominating the skyline of Silves is the red sandstone Silves Castle, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal. Walking through its battlements provides a glimpse into the town’s strategic importance during the medieval era, as well as panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Adjacent to the castle, Silves Cathedral stands as a striking contrast, with its Gothic architecture and ornate interior. The cathedral is built on the site of a former mosque, reflecting the town’s layered history. Strolling through Silves’ narrow streets reveals hidden gems, including traditional cafés, and shops selling local products such as citrus fruits and cork crafts. The Arade River, which flows through the town, adds to its serene atmosphere.
4. Tavira: the Venice of Portugal
Tavira is often hailed as the most picturesque town in the Algarve, and for good reason. Its blend of architectural styles, from Roman bridges to Moorish-influenced buildings, reflects its rich and diverse history. The town is bisected by the Gilão River, and the Roman Bridge that spans it provides a perfect vantage point for capturing Tavira’s photogenic charm. This river meandering through the centre has led to Tavira being nicknamed the Venice of Portugal.
Once one of the most important port cities of the Algarve, Tavira is now a cosy city, packed with beautiful buildings.
A highlight is the ruins of Castelo de Tavira, a castle built by the Moors. A few towers and castle walls can still be walked and provide views of the city centre, plus the central courtyard is full of flowers and fragrant shrubs.
A short ferry ride from the town is Tavira Island, a haven of pristine beaches and rolling dunes. The cooler months lend a sense of solitude to the island, making it an ideal spot for long, contemplative walks along the shore. Nature lovers will also appreciate the nearby Ria Formosa Natural Park, a sprawling lagoon system teeming with bird life, including flamingos and storks, particularly during the migratory season.
If you happen to be a seafood fanatic, squid in particular, the tiny fishing village of Santa Luzia is a 10-minute drive from Tavira and it is known for its calamari. The atmospheric small boulevard is packed with restaurants offering fresh seafood.
5. Monchique: a mountain spa retreat
Nestled in the Serra de Monchique mountain range, Monchique offers a verdant escape from the coastal landscapes of the Algarve. As a mountain town, naturally the climate here is cooler than on the coast, so it may not be where visitors go looking for sun, but it’s a worthwhile side trip. The town is a charming collection of narrow streets and traditional houses, with local artisans selling handmade goods, such as woven baskets and pottery.
To warm up, nearby Caldas de Monchique is a spa village known for its therapeutic thermal waters. The Romans were the first to discover Monchique and its healing waters and it continues to be visited for the spa experiences. Hiking enthusiasts will also be happy here, with the trail to Fóia, the highest peak in the Algarve, particularly rewarding. The views from the summit stretch across the entire region, and on clear days you can see as far as the Atlantic Ocean. n

Setting the scene
In the competitive market of luxury property, first impressions are everything. Elaine Penhaul from Fine & Country Property Staging shares insights into the art of preparing high-end homes for sale.
The key differences in luxury property staging When it comes to staging luxury properties, size, quality and service are paramount. “Luxury homes often have expansive floor plans and oversized rooms,” Elaine Penhaul from Fine & Country Property Staging explains. “This requires furniture, art and accessories proportionate to the space. Additionally, the inventory must match the home’s high-end finishes, which means sourcing from top-tier suppliers, rather than high street retailers.”
The personal nature of the service is equally critical. “High-net-worth clients expect discretion and trust,” she says. “They’re accustomed to exceptional service in every aspect of their lives, and staging is no exception.”
A tailored approach to high-end staging
Staging a luxury property begins with collaboration. Elaine works closely with homeowners, agents and, when needed, representatives to understand the timing of the sale, the target demographic and regional nuances.
“Every region and buyer group has distinct preferences,” she notes. “What works for a London townhouse may not suit a waterside retreat or a country estate.” Furniture and accessories are carefully selected to align with the home’s style and appeal to the target market. “The process is as much about precision as it is about creativity,” Elaine explains.
2025 trends
Current trends highlight how buyers envision using spaces. “Post-pandemic, we saw an increased demand for dual home offices and dedicated school rooms,” says Elaine. “Now, the focus has shifted to leisure spaces – bars, games rooms and home cinemas are in high demand.”
While Elaine loves staging practical spaces, she admits to having a soft spot for more indulgent rooms. “Fabulous dressing rooms are my personal favourite. There’s something magical about organising a space tailored to someone’s lifestyle, whether it’s an elaborate wardrobe or a performance artist’s preparation space.”
Notwithstanding evolving trends, Elaine is committed to timeless principles. “Symmetry is always pleasing to the eye,” she explains. “We aim to blend the old and the new, creating a look that feels curated, rather than overly coordinated. Eclectic touches give homes a sense of evolution and personality.”
Sustainability in staging
Sustainability is increasingly important to buyers and stagers alike. “Staging is inherently sustainable because it involves reusing high-quality furniture across multiple homes,” says Elaine. “We also prioritise natural materials, repaint furniture to follow trends, and reupholster tired sofas and chairs rather than discarding them.”
Our stager’s favourite spaces
For Elaine, open-plan kitchen and living spaces remain the most rewarding. “These are the heart of the home and crucial for buyers,” she says. “Their multi-functional nature makes them challenging but incredibly satisfying to stage. The ultimate goal is to have a potential buyer walk in and immediately connect with the space.”
Avoiding common mistakes
One of the most frequent pitfalls Elaine observes is when owners choose a stager based solely on cost. “A luxury property staged with budget furniture risks underselling the lifestyle on offer,” she cautions. “The pieces won’t fill the space appropriately and may not reflect the home’s quality.”n

Beachfront bliss
Looking for a sun-soaked change of pace in a picture-perfect island setting? With its idyllic blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture and laid-back charm, Barbados may be the answer. Michaela Black explores a stunning Caribbean property.
The Caribbean island of Barbados is a daydream destination. Known for its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and year-round sunshine, the island is a tropical paradise. But Barbados is more than its natural beauty. It’s a place rich in culture, with a lively music scene, vibrant festivals and a history that dates back centuries.
Make your way to this slice of paradise and you’ll find opportunities to explore historic plantations, enjoy a rum tasting or swim with sea turtles. For the adventurous, activities like snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing await. And for those who prefer a slower pace, the island’s spas, gardens and serene beaches provide the perfect setting for relaxation. You may find yourself longing for a permanent sea change.
If the Caribbean is calling, the answer could be Cove Spring. Nestled on the picturesque west coast of Barbados, this property is the epitome of tropical luxury. Perched on a coral cliff in The Garden, St. James, the stunning ten-bedroom home offers a private sanctuary where natural beauty meets opulent living. With a seven-bedroom main house and a three-bedroom guesthouse, the estate is designed to accommodate family, friends, or discerning guests seeking an unforgettable escape.
Cove Spring is more than a home – it’s a masterpiece. Sitting on over an acre of prime waterfront land, the property boasts sweeping sea views, private beach access and expansive outdoor spaces that make the most of the tropical climate.
This is most certainly a home with the wow factor.
The main house’s seven bedrooms are elegantly designed, with en suite bathrooms and ample space to relax and recharge. Each room features large windows that let in the tropical sunlight and offer breathtaking vistas of the Caribbean Sea.
The guesthouse, with its three additional bedrooms, is equally impressive, providing a separate retreat for guests or extended family. Together, the main house and guesthouse offer ample accommodation for large gatherings, whether it’s a family reunion, a corporate retreat or a group of friends celebrating life’s milestones.
The property stars a spectacular kitchen, ideal for preparing signature dishes – or having them prepared for you. Alternatively, there is a teppanyaki table in one of the two gazebos. These outdoor spaces are perfect for socialising, dining al fresco or unwinding with the sound of the waves as your soundtrack.
When evening falls, there is the option to gather in the media room for a cosy night in. Whether it’s watching the latest blockbuster, enjoying a classic film or catching up on your favourite shows, this space is designed for relaxation and entertainment. The fully equipped bar adds another layer of indulgence. Cocktail anyone?
Cove Spring is the perfect property for those who enjoy staying active too. The estate features a state-of-the-art fitness centre and a 50-foot, resort-style swimming pool. Tennis enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to top-
tier courts at Royal Westmoreland, Sugar Hill, and public facilities in nearby Holetown. If golf is the sport of choice, two of the island’s most renowned courses – Sandy Lane and Royal Westmoreland – are moments away. Imagine starting the morning with a round of golf on a world-class course and ending the day with a sunset cocktail on Cove Spring’s expansive sea-facing patio.
Cove Spring’s location in The Garden, St. James is one of its most compelling features. As well as being conveniently located just 35 minutes from Grantley Adams International Airport, this exclusive area is known for its upscale properties, tranquil ambience, and proximity to some of the island’s best attractions. Holetown, just 5 minutes away, offers a vibrant mix of fine dining, high-end shopping and lively nightlife. Speightstown, another charming town, is also close by, providing a more laid-back vibe with local eateries, historic sites and artisanal shops.
With its unparalleled blend of luxury, privacy and natural beauty, Cove Spring stands as one of the most coveted homes in Barbados. Whether you’re seeking a personal haven, a lucrative investment, or both, Cove Spring is calling. n

Station life
There’s a simple elegance to Mount William Station, a historic property at the foothills of the Grampians National Park in regional Victoria in Australia. Founded in 1842, and rebuilt in 1920 after a fire, back in the day an invitation to stay at Mount William Station was highly sought after. Now that it has been reinvented as luxury accommodation, an invitation is no longer necessary – just a booking – but with only seven rooms in the Homestead and a further eight in the rustic-luxe Shearers’ Quarters, a stay here still feels like a privilege.
The property features include the Rhino Room, a guest lounge with a warming fire crackling in the open fireplace, the oversized kitchen, where guests can help themselves, the reception room and the dining room. While being guided around the building, we learn about the family’s rich farming heritage – Mount William Station continues to operate as a working stud and prime lambing farm, running Charolais cattle and sheep.
Through the wisteria-clad back door and around the corner is the Corner Room. The ambience is understated – think white walls, wooden floors wearing a cowhide rug, leather side tables, bespoke African art pieces, a large vase filled with white peacock feathers and an elegant en suite.
Outside, there’s a pool, sauna, lawn tennis court, manicured gardens, and the former stables – now the perfect event venue. A slightly longer walk leads to Lake Anne, a private lake where fish are waiting to be caught and wetland wildlife and bird populations can be spotted.
The dining room is an intimate space with a large wooden table, dressed in a crisp white tablecloth. Here, the dishes showcase the seasonal produce grown on the farm and across the region. The conversation ebbs and flows, a reminder of dinner parties with friends, despite the fact we are almost strangers. That’s the true luxury of Mount William Station – it blurs the line between an evening spent with old friends and meeting new people; between as much or as little as you choose to do; between refined luxury and homely comfort; between a hotel and a home.
