Seller Insight
Said to be one of the finest surviving medieval buildings in Greater London, East End Farm Cottage is a picture-perfect Grade II* listed period home that originally dates back to the 15th century. The property began life as a modest open-hall house, however in the 17th century a first floor was added, and in more recent times it has been sympathetically updated – within the constraints of its listing – to make it a very warm and welcoming family home.
“We bought the house twenty-three years ago, but I have to be honest and say that it wasn’t exactly the property we’d been looking for,” says the owner. “We’d renovated a three-bedroom house and were looking to upsize to something with four bedrooms, and while scouring various estate agents one Saturday afternoon we came across the details for East End Farm Cottage. It had been empty for around eighteen months so was in need of some TLC, it didn’t have a fourth bedroom and the garden was terribly overgrown so the property as a whole wasn’t in the best state, but its uniqueness really captured our imaginations; there’s nothing else like it.”
“Everyone who visits smiles the minute they set foot through the front door and that’s one of the many things that makes it so special. It’s warm and welcoming and absolutely steeped in history, so much so that at one point we developed a website (currently not live) detailing all of the things we’ve found out about it over the years. It’s also filled with some remarkable original features – the latticed balustrade and a hunting scene that was painted on the dining room wall at some point 17th century are just two that are totally unique.”
“The house is one of a kind and very beautiful, but the setting is something else that we absolutely love. We have a very pretty cottage garden that wraps right the way around the building and our surroundings are so peaceful that we can sit out there and not hear a thing. The wider location almost has a countryside feel with lots of wide-open spaces where we can go walking, and yet at the same time we’re just ten minutes from the Tube. For commuters it’s an absolute dream of a place; we’ve always said it’s somewhere you can escape to the country quite literally every night!”
“We’ve loved being the custodians of this house for the past twenty-three years, but it’s now time for us to move on and for new people to enjoy all it has to offer. We’ll be sad to leave and will miss it greatly; we’re well aware we won’t find anything like it again. We’ll also miss this superb location and our neighbours, all of whom have been absolutely wonderful.”* *
