Seller Insight
Situated just a stone’s throw from the award-winning sandy beaches and stunning coastline of the seaside resort of Scarborough is Bay House, a very handsome twelve-bedroom townhouse, which has not only been a muchloved home for the past ten years, but also a thriving guest house business.
“We bought Bay House in 2013, but we’d had our eye on it for a number of years prior to that,” says the owner. “In total, we’ve owned three guest houses in the town, but this was the one that we always wanted. It’s such a beautiful looking building and it’s hugely characterful, and it’s one of the last remaining complete period townhouses in Scarborough – the majority of the rest of them have now been converted into flats.”
“It’s fair to say that the property was in need of a huge amount of TLC when we bought it. It was all very tired and rundown, but we’ve always enjoyed a project and so we were happy to embark upon a bit of hard work to breathe new life into it. We wanted to bring back its original character and charm, but we also wanted to make sure it was a warm and comfortable place for people to stay and us to live, and I’d say we’ve definitely achieved both of those things – we’re constantly getting excellent reviews and everyone who stays here comments on the welcoming atmosphere of the house.”
“Running the business has been an absolute joy; we’ve met so many wonderful people, and we couldn’t imagine a nicer place to do it than in Scarborough. It’s such a lovely place. We have the sandy beaches right on our doorstep, lots of nice shops, bars and restaurants close by and there’s lots of lovely things to do and places to visit right the way through the year. Our plan is to downsize, but we’ll definitely be staying in Scarborough. There’s nowhere else we’d rather be!”
“We have three lounges, one red, one blue and one green, and I think we’d both agree that they are our favourite rooms. One has a balcony and a sea view so that’s a lovely room in the summertime, and we have two with gas fireplaces which create a really cosy atmosphere in winter.”
“We love living in Scarborough. It’s obviously an amazing place when the sun is shining, but even during the colder months it’s a stunning place. We have a fantastic array of shops and amenities close by, the transport links are excellent, and if you like the great outdoors, there’s nowhere better.”
“As I mentioned before, this is one of the last remaining complete Victorian townhouses in Scarborough. However, we do have planning permission to convert it into five separate holiday lets, should that be of interest to the new owners.”
“We’ve loved living in this house and we’ve enjoyed every minute of our time running the business, but we’ve decided that we now need to downsize,” says the owner. “We’ll be staying in Scarborough, but we’ll be sad to leave Bay House. It’s a beautiful, warm and comfortable home and it’s been a real privilege to own it.”*
