Seller Insight
We were initially drawn to the unique character of this home, nestled in a serene green belt area, while still being conveniently close to airports, golf courses, Burnham Beeches, and London. It’s a rare find where you can enjoy the best of both worlds—feeling as though you’re on holiday whilst still being at home.
One of the most special features of this home is its sense of seclusion and privacy. Despite being close to everything you might need, the cottage feels like a retreat, surrounded by large gardens and mature greenery. The peace and quiet made it an ideal haven during the COVID lockdowns, offering space to breathe, relax, and enjoy the outdoors.
Inside, the charm of the cottage comes alive during dinner parties. Our guests naturally gravitate toward the dining area, which sits lower than the rest of the home and evokes a sense of stepping back in time. The open fireplace adds another layer of enchantment, its roaring flames creating a “manor” feel that always leaves a lasting impression.
The cottage itself is steeped in history, built from the beams of decommissioned sailboats, their age and stories etched into the wood. Even after 15 years of living here, we still discover new carvings and details. It’s truly a house that continues to reveal itself to those who take the time to appreciate it.
We’ve respected the cottage’s historic charm while making subtle improvements, like upgrading the security system, converting attic spaces for additional storage, and enhancing the garden. The mature garden, originally established by a Royal Horticultural Society fellow, is a delight throughout the seasons, offering surprises with each passing month. It’s easy to maintain, yet a blank canvas for any budding gardener to add their personal touch.
A unique aspect of this home is its ability to regulate temperature naturally, thanks to its thick, periodauthentic walls. During the rare UK heatwaves, the cottage remains cool for days without the need for air conditioning, and when temperatures drop, it stays warm, creating a comfortable living environment yearround.
We’ve had many memorable moments here, from hosting events with up to 30 people indoors to more intimate dinners with neighbours and friends. The sense of community is something we’ll miss dearly. Our neighbours are close-knit, and we frequently share tasks, from bin collections to tackling heavier gardening jobs together. The neighbourhood is harmonious, and we’ve found great joy in the shared dinners and joint activities.
Living here has truly been a privilege. We feel more like custodians of this historic home, which has stood for nearly 400 years and will continue to do so long after we’ve moved on. This cottage is more than just a place to live; it’s an experience, a slice of English history that we’ve had the honour of looking after. To the future owners, our advice is to embrace this feeling and appreciate the uniqueness of this special place, knowing you’re part of its long and rich history.
