SELLER INSIGHT
When we first came across this house, we were immediately drawn in by its incredible location, opposite the Netley Cliff Sailing Club and Southampton Water, only a few minutes’ walk from the beach and the sprawling 200 acres of Royal Victoria Country Park. Netley Abbey village has a rich history with a 12th century Abbey, King Henry VIII castle, and the remains of the famous military hospital.
We loved the house from the start. We had a sense of being in a holiday home filled with space and light and the constant sights, sounds and smell of the sea. This feeling has never left us.
The house, part of a quiet cul-de-sac of just six homes, offers both seclusion and the convenience of village life. Its award-winning American ranch-style design was another big draw, with open-plan spaces that maximise the water views and invite light into every corner.
One of our favourite spots is the south-facing balcony. We spend entire summers out there, dining al fresco, enjoying the sunshine, sunsets and the view. On New Year’s Eve, it’s become a tradition to pop champagne and listen to the ships in dock sound their horns. Inside, the house offers a lovely mix of cosy and airy spaces. The winter lounge with its wood burner is where we retreat for movie nights while the view from upstairs, where we can see ships passing by, never gets old. The annexe, which we created from a former indoor pool room, feels like a luxury hideaway for guests and has given us the chance to host family in style.
What really makes this house special is the sense of waterside living. The design amplifies the light and space; our renovations included a large main bedroom and ensuite, wet room and oak flooring. The annexe, completed in 2020 with its sleek kitchen and comfortable bedrooms, turned an underused space into something practical and luxurious. It’s ideal for visiting guests or even an Airbnb, and gives the house an extra layer of versatility.
Working from home, we’ve enjoyed the convenience of two separate offices, one with gorgeous water views. Our dogs have loved the proximity of the park for endless walks. The house comes into its own when there are celebrations, seating sixteen for dinners at Christmas and birthdays, with the open layout providing plenty of space for everyone to come together.
As we prepare to downsize locally (as we love Netley Abbey so much), our advice to the future owners is simple: embrace the lifestyle. Take full advantage of the holiday vibe that comes with living by the water, enjoy the sunsets, and expect your guest list to grow! This house is more than just a home - it’s a haven, and it’s hard not to fall in love with everything it has to offer.”*
