30 A UNIQUE SILVER TORAH SHIELD Galicia, 1826 Mark
Repousse, chased and engraved with an impressive array of animals and foliage. Two lions in the center flanking an ark inscribed with a Hebrew dedication: ” זה כתר קודש שייך להנגיד מורינו ר'שמואל בן אדונינו אבי צבי זצ"ל שנת תקפו לפ"ק
translates: This holy crown belongs to the philanthropist Reb Shmuel the son of Reb Tzvi, may the memory of the righteous be a blessing. While originally belonged to the philanthropist Rabbi Shmuel, this folk-art Torah shield was purchased by a couple named Joseph and Esther in the nineteenth century, probably following the closing of the synagogue in which the shield was originally used. The couple donated the shield to a different synagogue in memory of their two sons who passed away. Engraved at the bottom are the sons’ names, Abraham Moshe and Eliezer, alongside the Hebrew blessing ‘may their souls be bound in the bundle of life forever.’ Marked 12 and makers’ mark.
