Volunteer Spotlight Alice Roberts
Pamela Newling speaks with Alice Roberts, Member, Technical Committee and Board Minute Secretary
In 2010 Alice returned to Sydney after working in Thailand for four years, and says she was motivated to volunteer “… just because I turned the radio on and heard 2MBS and thought I would like to volunteer there if they liked classical music like I did. I was right.” Her other motivation was that it reminded her of family and of her home in NZ. Alice explains: “My mother was playing double bass in the NZ symphony orchestra while I was in the womb, so classical music has been part of my life since then! I grew up with music, my mother being a musician, community conductor and teacher, and my father a singer. At the time, my mother was getting increasingly ill and she always used to tell me how much she enjoyed listening to the classical radio station. I wanted to volunteer as a I know how much comfort fine music gives to people who are alone or not well.” As the daughter of a music teacher, Alice was always picking up instruments but then not sticking much at lessons! “I learnt piano, recorder, guitar, cello, bassoon, oboe and double bass all before I was 18! But the ones that have stuck are piano and recorder…” Alice’s busy professional life is spent as a cloud technology specialist in financial services, currently working for Macquarie Group. For Fine Music, she says: “I’m one of the behind-the-scenes people – I’ve worked on weekend reception, also the Tech Committee, but now most of my time is taken up with minute taking for the Board and AGM.” Asked to share any particularly memorable moments or performances that stay forever in her memory, Alice replies: “So Many! Had a lovely trip in 2018 to Amsterdam and saw Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with Trevor Pinnock and the Concertgebouw Orchestra on Christmas Day, followed by Handel’s Alcina on New Year’s Eve in Zurich with Cecilia Bartoli and Philippe Jaroussky. So good. Looking forward to being able to travel again.” Alice’s musical tastes are broad. “I like good music of all kinds. Baroque is always a favourite, also chamber music … and I don’t mind the great symphonies and concertos as well. I’m an opera and musicals fan. Absolutely the best thing about living in Sydney is there are (in normal times) so many concerts and performances, but also whenever I travel, I will always fit in some time for music.” When time permits, Alice likes to potter around in the garden and spend time with family who live close by. She is always looking forward to the next trip, whether it’s travelling to NZ to see family or planning an overseas trip, which almost always involves squeezing in a concert, opera or musical somewhere.

Cesar Cui, soldier turned composer
by Michael Morton-Evans
“Cui is a gifted amateur...” So wrote Tchaikovsky. “His music is not original, but graceful and elegant. It is too coquettish. It pleases at first, but it soon cloys.” Damned with faint praise indeed, but then Tchaikovsky admitted in a later letter that he found Cui “profoundly loathsome.” It’s probably true to say that Cesar Cui’s name has been kept alive in musical history not so much for his compositions, but because he was one of the leaders of an all-important musical movement. That movement being, of course, The Mighty Five or The Mighty Handful as it was known. Together with Mily Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin and Mussorgsky, Cui worked to create a distinct national style in classical music. The style was undeniably Russian. Cesar Cui was technically French. His father was a French army officer who decided that he’d be better off staying in Russia than following the Emperor Napoleon back to France after the disastrous attack on Moscow in 1812. He settled in Lithuania, married a local girl, and taught French in the local school. He was a competent pianist and something of an amateur composer, and he made sure that his son took piano lessons. Like his father, young Cui tried his hand at compositions, but gave it up at 16 in favour of life in the military where he excelled as a student at the School of Military Engineering in St Petersburg. So good was he that over the years he rose to the rank of major-general. His life, however, took a bit of a turn when he was Zoonar GmbH / Alamy Stock Photo introduced to Mily Balakirev and got caught up in the avant-garde swirl around him. He became Balakirev’s disciple and in return, Balakirev encouraged Cui’s musical talent, such as it was. Cui started writing music reviews for one of the local papers, which he would sign, not with his name, but simply three asterisks. His reviews were often searing and his views on composers of the past less than polite. It didn’t take long for his name to get out and in one instance led the novelist Ivan Turgenev to say that Cui’s “empty head should be smashed in with a brick” following a particularly sacrilegious article about Mozart. As a music journalist, Cui idolised Schumann and devoted himself both to supporting native talents and to attacking what the Five perceived as dogmatic musical authority. This was mainly represented by Anton Rubinstein and the Italians who dominated the officially supported opera company in St. Petersburg, but he was not above savaging the works of his friends when he felt necessary. Oddly, though perhaps it was because of the influence of Balakirev, Cui concentrated on writing operas. No starting off with a gentle sonata or two, or even a half-hour concerto. Operas it was and his first, A Prisoner in the Caucasus, was not even performed until a quarter of a century later, and then wasn’t much thought of. His second, The Mandarin’s Son, a comedy, was produced in Cui’s drawing room with him, his wife and Mussorgsky in the leading roles, and Balakirev at the piano. And there it stayed! He went on to write nine or ten more, but all of them died a speedy death. Interestingly, apart from the very first and the last one, none of his operas were on Russian themes, despite his great advocacy of a national style. There was however one exception, which resulted in Cui being responsible for breaking the glass ceiling which had hitherto prevented Russian opera being performed in France. It all began with a letter from Camille Saint-Saëns as President of the Société des Compositeurs to Cui in 1891. Saint-Saëns invited Cui, through the auspices of the Société, to join the organisation, which led to the production of his opera-comique, Le Filibuster in Paris, which had laid unperformed since its completion in 1889. Thus, Cui became the first Russian composer to have an opera premiered in Paris, which took place several years later in 1894 at the Opéra-Comique. The opera only ran for four performances but broke that glass ceiling in Paris for Russian composers. Later in his life, when he had largely faded from public view with even his friends viewing him as anachronistic, his association with early music education proponent Nadezhda Dolomanova led him to produce several childrens’ operas and similar works for young performers. These proved to be a lot more successful than his adult works. In 1916 at the age of 81, Cui went blind, but that didn’t stop him composing. He dictated his works to a musical copyist, the works being mainly for children. On March 13, 1918, he had a cerebral haemorrhage and died. He was initially buried at the Lutheran Cemetry in St Petersburg, but in 1939 his body was reinterred in the Tikhvin Cemetary at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, to lie beside the other members of The Five. An examination of Cui’s music by musicologists over the ages has determined that his style bore more in common with French composers like Gounod, or the German Schumann, than to his contemporary Russians. Certainly, his works were not as nationalistic as the other members of The Five.

FineJazz Happenings – Great jazz, great birthdays
March 2022 – by Keith Pettigrew and Louise Levy
Over the years, jazz has seen its fair share of colourful and pioneering individuals who have changed the course of jazz. For many, they embrace emerging musical emphases, catapulting them into new territory. But some create entirely new concepts in musicality. How do we celebrate greatness? We can start by celebrating their birthdays, and thus focus on their music and their innovation. In March, we are relaunching our web series of Jazz Birthdays created by Louise Levy, by celebrating individual jazz greats. Listen out for tracks from these greats on our regular programs.
Glenn Miller (1 March 1904) Glenn Miller was an American big-band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1942, leading one of the best-known big bands. He scored 16 number-one records and 69 top ten hits, more than Elvis Presley or the Beatles. Featured on Jazz Rhythm with Jeannie McInnes on Tuesday 1 March.
Zakir Hussain (9 March 1951) Zakir Hussain is a classical tabla virtuoso, his consistently brilliant and exciting performances have established him as a national treasure in his own India, and gained worldwide fame. He was invited by President Obama to the International Jazz Day 2016 All-Star Global Concert. Featured on Jazz-On-Wednesdays with Xavier Bichon (Planet Jazz) and Robert Vale (Jazz Sketches) on Wednesday 9 March
Quincy Jones (14 March 1933) Quincy Jones is an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer, arranger, film and television producer, and record producer. His career spans over 60 years in the entertainment industry with a record 80 Grammy Award nominations, 28 Grammys, and a Grammy Legend Award in 1992. Featured on Jazz Pulse with Chris Wetherall on Monday 14 March.
Nat King Cole (17 March 1919) Nat King Cole was one of the most popular singers ever. Cole has a rare blend of technical musical knowledge and sheer performing artistry topped off with an abundance of showmanship. He turned out nearly 700 songs, all the while remaining a gentle, tolerant and gracious human being. Featured on the New Jazz Standard with Frank Presley on Thursday 17 March Aretha Franklin (25 March 1942) One of the giants of soul music, and indeed of American pop as a whole. She epitomised soul, often regarded as a symbol of Black America, although she never thought of herself as confined to one genre. Her eclectic choice of material maintained creative momentum, from gospel to Simon & Garfunkel. Featured on Friday Jazz Session with Alex Siegers on Friday 25 March
Sarah Vaughan (27 March 1924) In the 1940s, when most women singers adorned big bands as stage attractions and not legitimate jazz musicians, Sarah Vaughan elevated the vocalist’s role as equal with the jazz instrumentalist. She was known for her dynamic vocal range, sophisticated harmonies, and horn-like phrasing over a half-decade career. Featured on Classic Jazz with Dave Mac on Sunday 27 March
Astrud Gilberto (29 March 1904) She was known as ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ and often referred to as ‘The Queen of Bossa-Nova’ with roots firmly planted in Brazilian music. Her music was a combination of the sensual rhythms of Brazil and American pop and jazz. Featured on The Jazz Beat with Lloyd Capps on Tuesday 29 March.
Jazz Soundtrack: Antonio Sánchez
Louise Levy celebrates the energy of the Birdman soundtrack
In the past on a Saturday night, people went out; others had a special occasion, and some stayed home with families, friends, or partner, or all the above. Nowadays, on a Saturday night, life has changed. I watch movies. Movies that I haven’t seen or movies that I have but would like to see again. Interesting, alternative, spellbinding, funny, something that makes me feel and think. And soundtracks make a huge impact on the story.
One Saturday night, I watched Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) at home, having first seen it in a theatre. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, along with Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography from a total of nine nominations. Reasons why I wanted to see the movie again.
This time after watching the movie, I wondered why there was no Academy Award for Best Original Score, as the jazz soundtrack was pivotal to the story, so I went looking online and found a note from the award committee explaining the decision. Contrary to Rule 15 of the 87th Academy Awards, the film ‘had contained over a half an hour of non-original (mostly classical) music’. To me, that was a harsh judgment.
I searched for the composer and found jazz drummer Antonio Sánchez, who had said at the time: “It was a scary proposition (to score the movie) because I had no point of reference of how to achieve this. There’s no other movie I know that has a score like this.” This was the first time Sánchez had worked on a film, nevertheless after receiving the script, he composed ‘rhythmic themes for each of the characters’.
While Sánchez didn’t receive an Academy Award, he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for the Best Original Score, and the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music. He also won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Score, and the Satellite Award for Best Original Score. I became curious about Sánchez, the energy, and the vibrancy he creates. He first studied a degree in classic piano at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico, then travelled to Boston, Massachusetts, to study jazz at Berklee College of Music. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and obtained a scholarship for a master’s degree in jazz improvisation at New England Conservatory of Music.
In 1999, Sánchez moved to New York and in 2007 released his first solo album, Migration. It included several of today’s renowned jazz musicians such as Pat Metheny, Chris Potter and David Sánchez. When reviewing the album, the website All About Jazz called it “One of the best debuts of 2007”.
Sánchez continues to compose solo albums including Three Times Three (2015), Channels of Energy (2018) and the Grammy-nominated Bad Hombre (2017). His most recent solo album is Line in the Sand (2019). Sánchez composed this album as a thoughtful, evolutionary tale where jazz explores the journey of immigrants, the brutality of the police and the politics of protest.
Apart from his own solo recording projects, he works with other artists. Early in his career, he began working with Pat Metheny Group and in 2003 they won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, Speaking of Now.
Sánchez is a busy musician. In the last two years he has played with Thana Alexa, Ona (2020), and received a Grammy Nomination. Other projects include the album Trio Grande (2020) which Sánchez had worked on with Will Vinson and Grad Hekselman, plus a studio album Only Now (2021) composed by Igor Busman, with Evgeniy Pobozhiy (guitar), and Sánchez’s drumming!
So much energy!

Live Performance Review: SIX the Musical
By Tessa Miles
Henry VIII is known for establishing the Church of England and for his tumultuous love life, which is why the story of his six wives makes for the perfect musical. From the brainchild of English writing duo Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, SIX is currently playing at the Sydney Opera House until April and is a fun, upbeat and spectacular show, from the incredible costumes to the toe-tapping music and empowering story.
Each wife appears on stage to claim that they were Henry’s best wife through the device of a pop concert or singing competition. Each tries to upstage the following Queen with hard-hitting songs and stories of how they overcame the adversity and trauma of being Henry’s wife: divorce, beheading, death, divorce, beheading, and survival.
SIX is 80 minutes of pure entertainment from an ensemble cast of just six women: Phoenix Jackson Mendosa as Catherine of Aragon, Kala Gare as Anne Boleyn, Loren Hunter as Jane Seymour, Kiana Daniele as Anne of Cleves, Chelsea Dawson as Katherine Howard, and Vidya Mankan as Catherine Parr. Each girl is enjoyable to watch, bringing cheekiness to their characters, and all look like they are having a wickedly enjoyable time on stage. They are backed up by an allfemale on-stage band known as the Ladies in Waiting, who add energy and fun to the performances. Taking inspiration from today’s female pop stars such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, the show celebrates and empowers women and joins a growing list of musicals that showcase people of all colours, cultures, sexualities, shapes, and sizes. It will make you leave the Opera House wanting to experience it all over again. If you expect to come to SIX to see a classical musical show about a prominent historical figure, you will be surprised to find modern and contemporary pop culture references which answer the question, ‘what would historical figures do with a smartphone and Tinder?’
SIX originally opened in Sydney in January 2020 and successfully sold out its entire Sydney season before having to cancel the remainder of the Australian tour because of Covid. While the show is quite new, it had an exceptional reception thanks in part to social media, and now has several productions worldwide including in London’s West End, Broadway in New York, provincial UK cities, and even on cruise ships.
Get in quickly if you want to see it, as much of the Sydney run has already sold out. It’s thoroughly entertaining with a great spin on a familiar story reclaimed by the women it is about.

Somnambience
Jeremy Sawkins Bandcamp Jeremy Sawkins’ fifth release as a leader has delivered an album that doesn’t require too much analysis. Being a solo project on nylon-string guitar, it features some beautiful melodies and chords in counterpoint, very minimal improvisation, and a lot of space to create a very pleasing musical ambiance. The album contains several tributes to The Great American Songbook, two outstanding original compositions, Drift and Dom’s Norfolk, plus Naima, a jazz classic by John Coltrane. Capturing a melodic style, the adept guitarist takes us on a sonic journey with his inventive rubato approach to the music, forging an identity all his own. At times the results are purely magical. His shimmering interpretation of the old warhorse tune, The Sound of Music, almost brings a tear to the eye, and his flawless deliverance of the Henri Mancini composition, Moon River, is perfectly constructed for the 3.00 am sleep war to be won. This is a personal, intimate, and deeply touching solo guitar recording that activates the listeners’ imagination. It also stimulates with a soft, quiet, and fragile sonic satisfaction, ultimately providing the abundance of musical pleasure. Highly recommended.

Hendrik Andriessen: Miroir de Peine, orchestral music & concertos
Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra Brilliant Classics 96015
This double CD features music by a lesser-known Dutch composer, Hendrik Andriessen, who had a brother and two sons who were also composers, one of the sons being much more famous than any of the others. Andriessen had a long career as an organist and composer and this recording is a welcome introduction to his orchestral music. Featuring the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra with a couple of conductors and many soloists, the collection paints a picture of a composer who had a strong idea of his own sound world, one that inhabited the late Romantic and neo-classical styles with gentle grace. The conductors include David Porcelijn, who will be very familiar to Australian audiences, and the soprano soloist, Roberta Alexander, brings a beautiful ease to the sound of the title track, Miroir de Peine. This recording highlights the musical depth of the Netherlands in the 20th century through its portrait of a composer who is peripheral to trends of world music but integral to the modern musical history of Holland.

J. S. Bach Piano Transcriptions from Russia and the U.S.S.R.
Nadia Koudasheva koudasheva.com Nadia Koudasheva is a young Russianborn Australian pianist, musicologist and teacher. She studied at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she completed a Bachelor of Music (Performance), followed by a Doctor of Musical Arts. She has researched, and here performs, piano transcriptions of Bach’s music by Russian and Soviet musicians, the earliest of whom is Ivan Cherlitsky, whose first set of Bach transcriptions was published in 1844-45. Other transcriptions include those by Rachmaninov’s cousin Alexander Siloti (from Sonata for Solo Violin no 2), Samuil Feinberg (from Organ Sonata no 5) and Tatiana Nikolaeva (Toccata and Fugue in D Minor). I found this album a worthy complement to Antony Gray’s set of Bach transcriptions, which concentrates on transcriptions from Britain and Western Europe, together with a few pieces that could be regarded as original works. On the few occasions the same Bach piece was chosen in each collection, I thought that the Russian transcriptions and Koudasheva’s performances were just as impressive, with Nikolaeva’s transcription of the Toccata and Fugue, for example, seeming more magisterial than the better-known Reger. Highly recommended.

Prepared by James Nightingale Vinci, L. Didone abbandonata. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Pietro Trapassi. First performed Rome, 1726. Arr. Handel with additional music. First performed London, 1737. DIDO: Robin Johannsen, sop AENEAS: Olivia Vermeulen, mezz JARBAS: Antonio Giovannini, ct Lautten Compagney/Wolfgang Katschner. DHM 88985415082 2:37 In Carthage, Dido has fallen in love with the Trojan exile Aeneas, who has arrived in Africa on his way to Italy. Dido sees that Aeneas is torn in two directions: his love for her and the quest given to him by his dying father. At the same time, Dido is being wooed by the neighbouring king, Jarbas, who threatens war when his suit is declined. After Jarbas has attempted to kill Aeneas, Dido sentences Jarbas to death. Seeing the trouble that is brewing for Dido, Aeneas is reluctant to depart. He counsels her to pardon Jarbas, as executing him will bring the wrath of many African kingdoms upon her. Foremost in Dido’s mind, however, is to convince Aeneas to stay. When he declares his intention to leave, she gives him an ultimatum. He must choose for her: marriage to Jarbas or death. As Aeneas leaves the city, Jarbas’ forces overwhelm its defenders. Jarbas repeats his offer of marriage, which Dido again refuses. Abandoned, amidst the burning ruins of Carthage, Dido resigns herself to die. Chi temea Giove regnante, from Farnace (1724). Cecilia Bartoli, mezz; Il Giardino Armonico/Giovanni Antonini. Prepared by Anne-Louise Luccarini Offenbach, J. The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein. Operetta in three acts. Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. First performed Paris, 1867. GRAND DUCHESS: Huguette Tourangeau, mezz PRINCE PAUL: Richard Stilwell, ten BARON PUCK: Douglas Perry, bass FRITZ: John Walker, ten GENERAL BOUM: Donald Gramm, bar WANDA: Susan Belling, sop BARON GROG: Jack Davidson, bass Sante Fé Opera Ch & O/John Crosby. Gala GL 100.552 2:12 In 1720, the charming 20-year-old Grand Duchess of Gerolstein has, however, been brought up to have her own way and is a veritable tyrant. She is unhappy because she has been betrothed to the foppish Prince Paul so Baron Puck generates a war to amuse her. She decides to review her troops and, in doing so, falls desperately in love with the handsome soldier Fritz. The Duchess immediately makes him a corporal, then a sergeant, lieutenant and captain. Finally, to spite General Boum who commands the army, she makes Fritz commander-in-chief and sends him to conquer the enemy. Fritz, with the help of 300,000 bottles of wine, wins the battle easily by making the whole opposing army drunk. The delighted Duchess finds herself more enamoured of him than ever but he shows that he prefers his sweetheart, Wanda, and he displeases the Duchess by asking permission to marry Wanda. Infuriated, the Duchess conspires to assassinate Fritz upon his return from the wedding ceremony. She changes her mind as she is now involved in a new affair with Baron Grog but, on realising that he has a wife and four children, she decides to marry her original betrothed, Prince Paul. Fritz is stripped of his military ranks but he can now leave the army, return to Wanda, and become a village schoolmaster.

Decca 478 3707 3:43 Count Telramund accuses Elsa of murdering her brother. Elsa prays a knight will come to her defence and a boat drawn by a swan appears. The knight in the prow will defend Elsa on condition that she never asks his name or origin. When Elsa and the knight marry, Ortrud dares her to ask her husband’s name and Elsa succumbs. Telramund and armed men break into the bridal room and the knight kills him. He then tells Elsa he is Lohengrin from Montsalvat; he must leave her because she has asked the forbidden question. The boat appears and the swan turns into her brother. Lohengrin sails away as Elsa falls dead in her brother’s arms.

20:00 AT THE OPERA
Myslivecek, J. Medonte, Re di Epiro. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Giovanni di Gamerra. First performed Rome, 1780. ARSACE: Susanne Bernhard, sop KING MEDONTE: Thomas Allen, ten PRINCESS SELENE: Juanita Lascarro, sop EVANDRO: Stephanie Elliott, sop ZELINDA: Lorina Castellano, sop L’Arte del Mondo/Werner Ehrhardt. Harmonia Mundi 88697 86124 2 2:16 Arsace, a military commander in the service of King Medonte of Epirus (in present day Greece), learns that the King will marry Princess Selene, who is about to arrive from her native Argos. Arsace is dismayed, as he was once in love with her, and confides in his friend Evandro, the captain of the royal guard. During the welcome parade for Selene, Medonte sees that Arsace is hanging back and, asking why, learns about his previous association with her. Selene assures Medonte that her fidelity is not at risk, but Medonte is not so sure, justifiably, as Arsace and Selene secretly declare that they are still in love. Zelinda who accompanied Selene from Argos, urges Medonte to expose the affair by subterfuge but he takes them captive and they confess. Arsace escapes and attempts to free Selene, but is recaptured. At Selene's urging, Evandro agrees to help his friend. Medonte proposes to withdraw Selene's punishment if she will marry him immediately, but she turns him down. Meanwhile, unrest breaks out in Epirus, enabling Evandro to free Arsace. Medonte strikes back, imprisoning the lovers again. Evandro liberates them again and Medonte, with his soldiers now in open revolt, challenges Arsace to a wrestling match. Arsace wins, sparing Medonte's life and allowing him to retain the kingdom as Arsace and Selene return to Argos for the married life that awaits them.
